Gameweek 21 Review

Points: 62 points + Gameweek rank: 1.7m

I was very pleased with Bamford (15 points), Salah (15 points) and Dias (8 points). Raphinha’s early injury substitution dampened the joy of his 5 points return for my team (having kept him instead of Soucek when I made my GW21 transfer to buy Gundogan as my third Manchester City player).

I am still happy with my choice of Gundogan as a third Man City player going into their 3 Double Gameweeks. It would be a different story if Man City had been given their penalty in injury time and Gundogan stepped up to score for his owners and captainers. In a game of such fine margins, his blank in GW21 has led to many managers benching him against Burnley in GW22.

My triple Leeds attack are all carrying injury flags in FPL but based on Bielsa’s press conference, it seems highly likely that both Bamford and Raphinha will be back for GW22. Rodrigo could be facing an extended spell on the sidelines.

My overall rank increased from 171k to 154k. This is my highest OR so far this season in my hunt for a consecutive Top 10k finish.

Overall Rank

I am now 15 points away from the Top 100k (a personal goal I strive for every season). In summary, I am 3 points closer than I was pre-GW21 (still feeling gutted about captaining Gundogan over Salah)!

I feel confident of achieving this by the end of the season but the all elusive consecutive Top 10k finish is looking difficult to achieve whilst I am still 78 points behind! Perhaps a more realistic stretch target for the season is the Top 50k (37 points behind right now).

Reassessing the landscape – planning for the next Double Gameweeks & Blank Gameweeks

We are right in the middle of an intense period with 4 GWs in just under 2 weeks. We are also coming to a crossroads, with 4 normal GWs ahead of us before a large Double Gameweek 26. Manchester City have a good chance of playing one of Southampton or Everton in GW24 alongside their fixture vs Spurs.

We’re now 2 matches into Tuchel’s reign at Chelsea and things already look very different. Liverpool have returned to their goalscoring form after a poor start to the year. Arsenal have the 2nd best defensive record in the PL behind only Manchester City.

Spurs creativity is lacking with Kane injured and they have only recorded ~0.48 xG in 130 mins of football since his injury. Though they have the best Double Gameweek 26 fixtures coming up.

Manchester United have moved to 1st on the Fixture Ticker with the best upcoming fixtures in the next 6 GWs. Digne and CalvertLewin disappointed their new owners but they were bought with GW21-24 in mind and not just GW21.

Barnes and Maddison continue to impress in the absence of Vardy for Leicester. Finally, Aston Villa are brilliant and Grealish, Martinez and Watkins are all looking like conssitent points returners.

I highly recommend using Ben Crellin’s team planner to help you navigate the upcoming 8 GWs. There are massive gains to be made with strategic chip usage.

Some thoughts about this plus my revised approach to DGW26 and BGW29

  • I have 4 different transfer plans (see below for these – my most likely move is to bank a Free Transfer this week)
  • My priority, in general, is to own Man City, Spurs, Aston Villa and Everton players with my Free Transfers leading up to GW24)
  • I intend on using FTs to prepare for FPL DGW26 and BGW29 with my second Wildcard being triggered around GW30/31 to prepare for the final stretch of the season.
  • This is a great in-depth article about “How to avoid wildcarding for DGW26”: https://fplconnect.blog/2021/01/27/how-to-avoid-wildcarding-for-dgw26/
  • I will aim to have 2 FTs in GW24 and all my moves prior to then are focused on Man City (likely to have 3 DGWs 24, 26, 27) and Tottenham players (will have the best DGW26 fixtures and my TC options).
  • I’m still eager to use Triple Captain in Gameweek 26 (on Son or Kane, Spurs will have the two best DGW26 fixtures)

I believe there isn’t a one size fits all answer for the next set of BGWs and DGWs. It will predominantly depend on if you still have your FH, BB, TC and second Wildcard handy.

Captain for FPL GW 22

I intend on keeping my captain on non-other than Mohammed Salah for the GW22 home fixture vs Brighton. Salah showed encouraging signs that he is back to his razor-sharp self in front of goal with his brace vs West Ham in GW21.

He netted 15 points and took his tally for the season up to 15 goals and 4 assists. Liverpool and Salah’s respective goal droughts have come to an end and they appear to be back in full confidence. They have now scored 6 goals in their last 2 games and Salah will be hunting down his next Golden Boot.

Their GW22 opponents, Brighton, have just beaten Spurs 1-0 in GW21. They have had decent defensive stats all season but this is mainly at home (behind only Man City for home defensive stats). Away from home, their defensive stats are mid-table. With Liverpool being back in full-swing, I cannot see Brighton keeping them from scoring.

Liverpool on a whole are 1st for Shots (325), Shots on Target (118), Shots in the Box (212) and Goals (43).

The FFH Predicted Points Tool has Salah on 6.6 points in GW22 (1st across all positions).

Updated Watchlist for FPL GW 22:

(Bold names are new this week)

I will maintain an updated Watchlist in this section. I have identified players that I want to buy for my own team over the next 5 GWs. I will also be listing which players are on the chopping blocks in favour of these players on the watchlist.

Goalkeepers: Martinez, Areola

Out-list: Johnstone, McCarthy

Defenders: Maguire, Mitchell, Digne, Rudiger.

Out-list: Robertson

Midfielders: Grealish, Barnes, Maddison, Saka

Out-list: Raphinha

Forwards: Calvert-Lewin, Watkins, Werner, Lacazette

Out-list: Rodrigo

Players I’ve removed from my Watchlist ahead of FPL GW22:

Soucek – sold him for Gundogan so removed from my out-list above.

Salah – back to his best and removed from my out-list above.

Shaw – removed him due to the rotation risk, added Maguire instead. Maguire is nailed on as club captain and has great goal-threat. The upcoming run of 6 GWs sees Manchester United at the top of the Fixture Ticker.

Chilwell- removed him due to the rotation risk from Alonso who started ahead of him and scored a goal for Chelsea in GW21.

These are the 3 options I am going to decide between tomorrow:

  1. Bank a Free Transfer (most likely move)
  2. Rodrigo to Watkins (I will likely prioritise Grealish ahead of Watkins)
  3. Rodrigo to CalvertLewin (waiting to see if Everton get a DGW24 announced. I’d also like to see them show some form with the return of their creative assets)
  4. Johnstone/ McCarthy to Martinez (second most likely-move)

I am most likely to go with option #1 so I can go into GW23 with 2FT and lots of flexibility in my next moves. I’ve kept telling myself the Martinez transfer is not worth it as he is a Goalkeeper but I massively regret not just taking a hit for him months ago.
