FPL GW36 Sunday Fixtures sorted by xGI
Man City vs Newcastle United
City responded to their disappointing Champions League exit with a thumping 5-0 win over Newcastle. As has been the theme of this season, the swings from seemingly 50-50 calls continue to be brutal as highlighted again here with the fortunes of the 2 centre-backs. Foden came off the bench at the hour mark while Mahrez failed to make an appearance entirely.
Unsurprising for when he does start, Raheem Sterling (10.5m, MID) led the xGI chart with 1.19. He had 2 shots, both ‘big chances’ from inside the box and he created an additional 3 chances.
Outside captaincy shout Joao Cancelo (7.2m, DEF) had a strong showing. The defender had a massive 5 shots, 3 from inside the box including 1 big chance and created 1 big chance for an xGI of 0.90 with xG of 0.47. His heat map shown below shows a prominent presence inside the penalty box and with underlying numbers like that, he has high haul potential over the final 2 weeks of the season.
Laporte (6.1m, DEF) had 2 shots, both big chances from inside the box for an xG of 0.60.
Phil Foden (7.9m, MID) came off the bench to have 1 shot from inside the box, a big chance, for an xG of 0.43.
Kevin De Bruyne (11.9m, MID) had 1 shot from outside the box but created a stellar 6 chances including 3 big chances for an xGI of 0.36 (the model tends to assign low xA scores explaining the relatively low xGI to expected).
For Newcastle, Saint-Maximin (6.7m, FWD) had 2 shots, 1 from inside the box and created 2 chances including a big chance for a fairly decent xGI of 0.48.
Callum Wilson (7.1m, FWD) returned from injury, coming off the bench to have 1 shot from inside the box, a big chance, for an xG of 0.31.
In a game with major implications at both ends of the table, Leeds capitulated against Arsenal in dramatic fashion. A goalkeeper error and then a terribly irresponsible red card hard Leeds down a man and 2 goals in the opening half-hour.
Eddie Nketiah (5.6m, FWD) was the flavor of the week heading into a decent double gameweek at an attractive price for bench boosters and he delivered for owners here. 5 shots, all from inside the box and 2 big chances for an xG of 0.91. While a caveat on his heat map below is that it was against 10 men for an hour of the game, his high volume of shots from inside the box and heat map presence around the penalty box suggests that there’s a good chance of more returns from the young striker this season.
Martinelli (5.3m, MID) looked very lively against the 10-men of Leeds with 4 shots, all from inside the box including a big chance and 2 chances created including 1 big chance for an xGI of 0.86.
Odegaard (5.6m, MID) was excellent yet again. 3 shots, 1 from inside the box and 3 chances created for an xGI of 0.44.
Bukayo Saka failed to cross the 0.20 xGI threshold.
Leicester vs Everton
Everton edged out Leicester for a massive 3 points for them in their quest for survival. Plenty of budget Everton assets attracted attention due to their low-prices and back-to-back doubles and again, they showed up well on underlying data.
Demarai Gray (5.4m, MID) had 1 shot from outside the box but 2 big chances created for an xA of 0.43 and xGI of 0.46.
Anthony Gordon (4.7m, MID) had 1 shot from inside the box and 2 chances created for a relatively good xGI of 0.45.
Richarlison (7.5m, FWD) had 3 shots, all from inside the box including a big chance and 1 chance created for an xGI of 0.32. Good underlying data going into their remaining 4 crucial games.
Mason Holgate (4.2m, DEF) had 2 shots, both from inside the box including a big chance for an xG of 0.30 suggesting a good set-piece threat.
Patson Daka (7.0m, FWD) posed Leicester’s strongest threat. He had 3 shots, all from inside the box including 2 big chances and 2 chances created for an xG of 0.64 and xGI of 0.69.
Harvey Barnes (6.5m, MID) came off the bench to produce 3 shots, 2 from inside the box including 1 big chance and 1 chance created for an xGI of 0.31.
West Ham vs Norwich City
West Ham shook off their own European disappointment to pick up a 4-0 win against Norwich. While their lack of doubles and the pending game against City means interest in their assets won’t be high, they did have some good performances.
Antonio (7.4m, FWD) had 2 shots, both from inside the box including 1 big chance and 1 chance created for a healthy xGI of 1.01.
Lanzini (5.4m, MID) had 2 shots, 1 from inside the box which was a penalty and 1 chance created for an xGI of 0.94.
Jarrod Bowen (6.8m, MID) is the FPL-gift that keeps on giving. He had 2 shots, 1 from inside the box including a big chance, and 3 chances created for an xGI of 0.58.
Teemu Pukki (6.1m, FWD) owners were unlucky to come away empty-handed. He had 2 shots including 1 big chance from inside the box for an xG of 0.51.
