FPL GW25 key stats
Sunday saw a couple of surprise benchings, another Spurs defeat and a dearth of FPL points! Here, we take a look at players who notched an xGI of 0.20 or more from Sunday’s games and discuss how they went about doing so considering that the xG contribution to xGI is going to be more valuable in FPL point terms than the xA contribution.
Wout Weghorst (6.5, FWD)
Weghorst has already drawn plenty of FPL attention given Burnley’s upcoming DGWs and he followed a promising performance against Manchester United with another one here against Liverpool but unfortunately went off injured. He had an xGI of 0.48 with 3 shots, 2 from inside the box including 1 ‘Big chance’ while he also created 1 chance. Keep an eye on injury updates but in a season where Forwards continue to disappoint on the whole, Weghorst could emerge as a strong option given price and fixtures – IF FIT.
Fabinho (5.4, MID)
Fabinho has been putting up some unsustainably good-looking xG (and even npxG) numbers over his past 4 fixtures. He amassed a huge xGI of 1.42 made up almost entirely of xG owing to 3 shots, 2 from inside the box including 2 big chances. Most people won’t have a free 3rd Liverpool spot owing to the merits of Jota and Robertson to supplement Salah and Alexander-Arnold and I wouldn’t recommend bringing in Fabinho over any of those options.
Sadio Mane (11.7, MID)
Mane returned from an African Cup of Nations triumph to an unexpected start due to a dead leg suffered by Jota in training the preceding day. In his 70 odd minutes on the pitch, Mane looked very bright raking an xGI of 0.51 including 3 shots, all from inside the box including 2 big chances as well as 2 chances created including 1 big chance. Very impressive numbers on a quiet day at the office for Salah but again, given the limitation of budget and Liverpool spots, it’s hard to look past Salah as the preferred premium midfield option of the 2.
Wolves started brightly, scored twice in the first 20 minutes and then a combination of great goalkeeping and resolute defending resigned Conte’s Spurs to another league defeat. This Wolves side double in GW26 and also have a fixture in reduced GW27 as well as GW30. Getting one of their defensive assets is an astute investment for managers looking to save a Free Hit chit in either 1 of GW27/30 or both.
Dendoncker (4.7, MID) had an xG of 1 with 2 shots, both from inside the box and 1 big chance.
Jimenez (7.4, FWD)
had an xGI of 0.58 from 2 shots, both from inside the box and 1 big chance and 1 chance created. For a historically good FPL asset, Jimenez has blown hot and cold this season but his good numbers here in a counter-attacking setup might bode well on the eve of a DGW against Leicester and Arsenal.
The other Wolves performer of note was Daniel Podence (5.5, MID) who got 3 shots, 2 from inside the box for an xG of 0.20.
Spurs Misery
For Spurs, they failed to score a goal despite a team xG of 1.1.
Son (10.7, MID) continued his impressive run under Conte with an xGI of 0.61 courtesy of an all-round display with an xG of 0.23 and xA of 0.38. He had 3 shots, 2 from inside the box, and created 4 chances but had 0 ‘big chance’ involvement.
Harry Kane (12.2, FWD) may have failed to score again but for a second game running, had a very encouraging game in terms of underlying numbers. He had an xG of 0.55 from a mammoth 8 shots, 5 of which were from inside the box.
Bentancur (5.0, MID) had a decent xGI of 0.22 from 1 shot inside the box and 2 chances created but we’d have to see more from him over time so begin to consider him as an option given what the likes of Jacob Ramsey have been producing in that bracket.
Jarrod Bowen (7.0, MID) is a man on fire. He’s well and truly entering ‘undroppable’ territory on the verge of DGW period when he doesn’t have one on the horizon. An excellent 0.71 xGI display with an xG 0.48 and an xA of 0.23 from 3 shots, all from inside the box including 1 big chance and 1 chance created.
Craig Dawson (4.9, DEF) took advantage of Leicester’s subpar set-piece defending to notch 1 late equaliser from his 1 shot, of 0.53 xG value.
For Leicester, Youri Tielemans (6.4, MID) had an xGI of 0.90 however his penalty added an xG of 0.76 to that total. He managed 3 shots, 2 from inside the box including the penalty and created 1 chance.
Harvey Barnes (6.5, MID) has been one of the beneficiaries of Leicesters switch to a 4-3-3. He had a strong xGI of 0.63 made of an xG of 0.19 and xA of 0.44 courtesy 4 shots, 3 from inside the box and 2 chances created.
The omission of Newcastle United vs Aston Villa from this review is due to NO player from either side crossing the minimum of 0.2 xGI to make the table above. Coutinho had an xGI of 0.14, Cash of 0.15 while both Trippier and Digne managed a game high 0.16 alongside Ryan Fraser.
