A lot of managers might have players like Jota and Benrahama in their teams. With comparatively tougher fixtures coming on and, better prospects at that price point now available, managers are looking to transfer them out. Most of the Wildcarders already gaining a step ahead, by replacing these players with Gallagher, Mbeumo, Arsenal Midfielders etc. In this article, we cover the best budget midfielders ahead of FPL GW9 and will try to determine the best replacement in this sub 7.5m bracket for managers to jump on.
Before going further, Do vote in this week’s FPL GW9 allaboutfpl captaincy poll. The same will be available in the captaincy analysis and metrics blog written by@AK_FPL1. Players to get Rid of ahead of FPL GW9:
Players, who have come good in the early parts of the season are the players who are on the top of the chopping block, as they would be facing difficult fixtures. Some of these players are, Benrahama, Jota, Greenwood (due to United’s form and fixtures), Sarr and Traore. These players can be replaced by other, mid/low-priced players, who also have better fixtures and form.
Let’s see an in depth analysis of the budget midfielders to go for:
Raphinha(6.6m)
Raphinha is arguably the most under-priced player in FPL this season. Even if he was priced at 9m, he would still be one of the best value assets! Although he missed out GW8 due to international commitments, he is expected to start the next game against Wolves, after which he faces Norwich. He is a brilliant asset to own, and the stand out option from the Leeds team. He has recorded an xG/90 of 0.24 and xA/90 of 0.22.
He has played 7 games this season, and scored 3 goals so far. Even for Brazil, in this international break, he scored a brace against Uruguay. He is a to notch player and also has the form and fixtures, and the attractive price point to secure a place in our teams.

Mbeumo(5.5m)
Mbeumo has been in red hot form this season along with his teammate Ivan Toney. Brentford have been looking very sharp since the beginning. They limited Chelsea to a 0.28 xG in GW8, while they had an xG of 1.88! Mbeumo has hit the woodwork 6 times this season! He has an xG/90 of 0.34 and xA/90 of 0.09, so far this season. At 5.5m it is impossible to ignore such kind of asset. With Leicester, Butnley, Norwich and Newcastle coming up, he seems like the perfect replacement of players like Jota, Benrahama etc.

Gallagher(5.7m)
Gallagher, at this price point is one of the best value assets to own. He was able to accumulate some unreal numbers in the season for. He has an xG/90 of 0.41 and xA/90 of 0.23, and 0.74 Big Chance per 90 minutes. Crystal Palace have a good fixture run all the way till GW 20. At this price point, he can also be benched for his tougher fixtures, without leaving a lot of money idle on the bench.

So far, he has scored 2 goals and assisted 3. Palace face Newcastle next week, and Man City after that, for which Gallagher can easily sit on bench and make way for players like Duffy, Livramento.
Mason Mount(7.4m)
Mason Mount featured for 25 minutes in the previous game, after returning from injury. He is an essential source of creativity for the Blues, and should get back to playing 90 minutes. From playing 357 minutes this season, he has recorded an xG/90 of 0.17 and an xA/90 of 0.51, also 1.01 Big Chances Created per 90 minutes. With Lukaku up front, the chances he and Reece James create have a high chance of getting converted, therefore he can be a great double up option in attack from the Chelsea team.

Phil Foden(8.0m)
While considering a City player, rotation risk should always be considered. Foden is a brilliant player and an amazing FPL asset to own, if he gets minutes. He has started 3 games this season, and scored 1 and assisted 1 from it. He has an xG/90 of 0.46 and an xA/90 if 0.27, with 0.63 Big Chances per 90 minutes.

Arsenal Mids:
NOTE: SAKA IS A DOUBT AS OF NOW
Saka ESR
In the Budget Midfielder bracket, one of Saka or ESR should be considered. They have got good fixtures and finally scoring some goals. If not able to stretch to Saka, Smith-Rowe is no doubts the clear option. Let’s see, if price is not an issue, which one of them is the better asset:
xG/90 | xA/90 | Big Chances/90 | SiB/90 | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Saka(6.4m) | 0.20 | 0.20 | 0.17 | 1.67 |
Emile Smith-Rowe(5.4m) | 0.21 | 0.09 | 0.14 | 1.29 |
Saka ESR
From the above comparison, ESR seems to be the player to go for, if price is taken into consideration. Otherwise, Saka is the better asset to own according to stats, as he gets more chances and shots to score. If fit, and the team structure allows, Saka, on paper is the better option, although ESR is not behind by much.

Everton Mids:
NOTE: DOUCOURE HAS BEEN RULED OUT WITH BROKEN FOOT
The two Everton Midfielders to be considered in this bracket are, Gray and Townsend. Although they are not up there with the the likes of Raphinha and Mbeumo, they still have two good fixtures against Watford and Wolves. Therefore, they have high potential to deliver in GW9 and GW10. Let’s compare the two:
xG/90 | xA/90 | Big Chances/90 | SiB/90 | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Gray(5.8m) | 0.17 | 0.21 | 0.13 | 1.18 |
Townsend(5.7m) | 0.32 | 0.24 | 0.29 | 0.74 |
Gray Townsend
Townsend has better stats, but Gray gets more shots from inside the Box. For 2 weeks, going for either is a coin toss, but they are capable of delivering points. With the absence of Doucoure, Gray might get more attacking with Tounsend helping the midfield more. However it is a close call between the two.
Conclusion
There are a lot of good budget midfielders available in the game right now, and the play is to keep switching between them in accordance with respective form and fixtures. The best ones, currently, in my opinion, would be Raphinha and Mbeumo. Close to them, are Gallagher, Foden and Mount. These budget midfielders provide immense value, which frees up cash from midfield, which can be spent in defence, as Big at the Back is a viable strategy right now.
