Midfielders are the most important and expensive assets in every manager’s team. They are generally the highest-scoring players every season and captaincy picks mostly revolve around them. In this blog we take a look at all the highest scoring FPL midfielders every season since the start of FPL in 2002-03.

Highest scoring FPL Midfielders in a single FPL season since 2002/03 (season wise):
2002-03 ( 186 Points ) – Paul Scholes
Paul Scholes was an integral part of the title winning Manchester United team. He ended up as the highest scoring midfielder in the 2002-03 season with 14 goals and 3 assists in 33 appearances averaging 0.42 goals per match. He ended up as the second highest goal scorer for his team behind Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Kewell was the second highest midfielder with 182 points.

2003-04 ( 216 Points ) – Frank Lampard, Robert Pires
Breaking the 200 points mark for midfielders in the second season we saw Frank Lampard and Robert Pires as joint top scorers with 216 points. Lampard had 10 goals and 5 assists for the season in 38 appearances. Pires helped Arsenal to win the trophy in a season where they went unbeaten out of which they won 26 games. He scored 14 goals and had 8 assists in his 36 appearances.
2004-05 ( 269 Points ), 2005-06 ( 222 Points ), 2008-09 ( 226 points), 2009-10 ( 284 Points ) – Frank Lampard
Frank Lampard went on establish himself as a must-have in every managers team with being the highest scoring FPL midfielder in 4 of the next 6 seasons. He scored 200+ points in 5 of those seasons and was a treat to watch during those years. He had 13 goals and 18 assists in the 04-05 season where he won the player of the season award and went on to score 16 goals in the next one. His 22 goals and 14 assists in the 2009-10 season got him his highest FPL points and helped Chelsea secure their third title in that decade, 2 with Jose Mourinho and the last one with Carlo Ancelotti.

2006-07 ( 244 Points ), 2007-08 ( 283 Points ) – Cristiano Ronaldo
Being one of the brightest young starts at that time Ronaldo had a few years of experience in the league after coming from Sporting in August 2003. Scoring 17 and 8 assists in the 2006-07 season Ronaldo had taken the league by storm. He went on to be the highest scorer next season with 31 goals in 34 appearances averaging 0.91 goals per match. Ronaldo won the player of the season award for these 2 consecutive years. He helped Manchester United win the title in 3 seasons (2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09) before leaving for Madrid in July 2009 for £80 million which was the highest transfer fee at that time.

2010-11 ( 198 Points ) – Nani
Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha also known as Nani is only the second player on this list who did not get past 200 points. Nani went on to score 10 times and assisting 14 in his 33 appearances that season. He finished ahead of C Adam ( 192 points) and Malouda ( 186 points ) who were the second and third highest scoring midfielders respectively.

2011-12 ( 209 Points ) – Clint Dempsey
The Spurs midfielder ended up as the highest scoring mid that season with 17 goals and 6 assists. The next highest point scorers were his teammate Gareth Bale (195 points ) and David Silva ( 184 points )

2012 -13 ( 249 Points ) – Gareth Bale
Wales – Golf – Madrid. In that order. Probably that’s how most people know him now but Bale who was at Spurs at that time was the highest scoring mid in the 2012-13 season. He narrowly missed out the previous season where he had 10 goals and 14 assists but with his contribution of 21 goals and 9 assists in the 2012-13 season he was clear ahead of second place Juan Mata (212 points). Bale went on the win the player of the season award.

2013-14 ( 241 Points ) – Yaya Toure
In the 2013-14 season Yaya Toure was a complete beast scoring 20 goals and having 9 assists. 6 of those were penalty goals and 4 were from freekicks. He made 36 appearances that season and helped Manchester City win their second title in 3 years. Toure finished the season as the 3rd highest goal scorer behind Daniel Sturridge (21 goals) and Luis Suarez ( 31 goals ).

2014-15 ( 233 Points ) – Eden Hazard
The next Chelsea player on this list is Eden Hazard. Even though he had a slow start to the campaign and only managed to get 5 attacking returns in the first 10 gameweeks, Hazard ended the season with 14 goals and 9 assists in 38 appearances. He got the player of the season award and helped Chelsea secure the title under Jose Mourinho once again. Alexis Sanchez ( 207 points ) and David Silva ( 191 points ) finished as the top 3 midfielders.

2015-16 ( 240 Points ) – Riyad Mahrez
A dream campaign for Leicester City saw them winning the trophy for the first time in their club history. That season Mahrez was an integral part of the team and had formed a great partnership with Jaime Vardy. Mahrez scored 17 goals and provided 11 assists in 37 appearances. He was in the top5 of both lists – goal scored and assists. Only Mesut Ozil (28) had more big chances created than Mahrez (20).

2016-17 ( 264 Points ) – Alexis Sanchez
The Arsenal winger finished the seasons being the highest scoring midfielder ahead of Alli, Hazard and Eriksen who all finished above 200 points. Sanchez finished the season with 24 goals, 10 assists and 32 bonus points. He was the third highest goal scorer behind Romelu Lukaku ( 25 goals ) and Harry Kane ( 29 goals).

2017-18 ( 303 Points ), 2018-19 ( 259 Points) – Mohamed Salah
Following his transfer from Roma Salah had his shooting boots on since the first day. Scoring on his debut against Watford marked his return to the Premier league after a rather dry spell at Chelsea a few years back. Salah crossed 300 points in his first season at Liverpool and is the only player to do so till date. He finished the campaign with 32 goals and 12 assists and won the player of the season award. Topping the goal scoring charts once again Salah finished the 2018-19 season with 22 goals and 8 assists. This time he was joint top scorer along with Aubameyang and team mate Sadio Mane. Though Salah has not been the top scoring mid in the last 2 seasons his points tally of 233 and 231 make him a near essential for every manager.

2019-2020 ( 251 Points) – Kevin De Bruyne
Starting a season at Manchester City for the first time with a price of below 10 million ( 9.5 million ) De Bruyne delivered from the first week itself. He had a stellar campaign which saw him win the player of the season and equal the assist record of 20 matching Henry. De Bruyne scored 13 goals and registering 23 assists along with 35 bonus points. He was the highest assist provider and his 33 big chances created were far ahead of 2nd place Trent Alexander Arnold and team mate Riyad Mahrez who could only manage 18.

2020-21 ( 244 points ) – Bruno Fernandes
Fernandes finished his first complete season with Manchester United being the highest scoring player after scoring 18 goals and providing 14 assists. 9 out of those 18 goals were penalties. He created the most amount of big chances ( 20 ) and finished in the top 3 for both goals scored and assists provided.

2021-22 (265 points ) – Mohammed Salah
Salah got 23 goals, 14 assists to finish as the highest scoring midfielder for the third time in 5 years. He won the Golden Boot(Most goals), Play Maker(Most assists) but that was not enough to get Liverpool the title as they fell agonizingly close by 1 point to lose the title to Man City. Salah dominated the season and topped all the charts- xG(23.71), xA(12.89), 36 big chances.
Son who shared the golden boot with Salah for 23 goals finished 2nd with 258 points. Bowen in his break through season had 12 goals, 17 FPL assists to finish third with 206 points and earned a deserved England call up. Bowen also started the season at just 6.5M and was the best value pick in the game.
2022-23 (239 points ) – Mohammed Salah
Salah did not have the best of the seasons by his lofty standards but it was still enough to get to his sixth consecutive 200+ score. There is simply no one challenging him for the midfielder crown. 19 goals, 12 assists from Salah helped Liverpool clinch a Europa league spot. His best haul of the season came in GW26 against Manchester United where he scored 2 goals, 2 assists to get a massive 21 point haul.
Odegaard finished as the second highest midfielder with 212 points while Rashford completed the podium with 205 points. Interestingly both these players started the season at 6.5 and turned out to be excellent value picks.
2023-24 (244 points ) – Cole Palmer
Cole Palmer will go down as the one of the Best Budget Enablers of all time in FPL History. Starting the season at just 5.0 million, Palmer ended up not only as the Highest scoring Midfielder, But as the Highest scoring FPL player that season. Palmer got 22 goals and 13 assists from just 29 starts during the season. Chelsea didn’t play well that season, but Palmer put on a show and helped Chelsea finish 6th.
Palmer started the season as a 5.0 million Midfielder, dropped to 4.9 million by GW6. He then has his first start in GW7 that when everything started and he ended the season at 6.3 million!
Foden finished 2nd among Midfielders with 230 points(19 goals and 8 FPL assists) while fellow Englishman Saka rounded up the Midfield with 226 points(16 goals and 12 FPL assists).
