FPL Gameweek 2 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold & Sell

Gameweek 1 really reminded us why we love (and hate) this game in equal measure. Four of the top six most-owned assets blanked, while the week’s highest scorer was a defender owned by just 3.8% of managers…from newly promoted Sunderland, no less. To add to the chaos, two of the top three scorers were owned by less than 5% of teams. In short, GW1 threw curveballs at us left, right, and centre — the perfect reminder that FPL is truly back with all its glorious unpredictability.

But as with every opening weekend, GW1 is now history. The key lies in moving forward and planning ahead. FPL Gameweek 2 promises just as much drama with mouth-watering fixtures on the horizon, and the choices we make now could set the tone for our FPL season.

So, let’s start with our BUY-HOLD-SELL article for this GW, sponsored by …. Well, nobody. We are poor, but you can help here if you want 😊

FPL GW2 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY

Antoine Semenyo (£7.1m) – MID, Bournemouth – 12.4% TSB

FPL GW2 Transfer Tips: Players to BUY - Antoine Semenyo (£7.1m)

We already tipped Semenyo in pre-season as a player who could explode once the Liverpool fixture was out of the way — but even the most optimistic managers didn’t expect him to deliver a double-digit haul against Slot’s men. That performance has only strengthened his case as one of the standout mid-priced midfielders this season.

The fixtures are now firmly in his favour. Bournemouth face Wolves in GW2, a team that conceded the highest goals, xGC, and NPxGC while also posting the lowest xCS in GW1. That defensive fragility plays right into Semenyo’s hands, especially given that Bournemouth were a top-five attack last season in terms of underlying numbers. Wolves and Leeds are among his next five opponents, making this the ideal window to bring him in.

He’s already seen a price rise, and another could easily follow if he delivers again this week. If you’re looking for an early-season bandwagon that combines strong fixtures, proven output, and rising ownership, Semenyo is the standout pick.

Jørgen Strand Larsen (£6.5m) – FWD, Wolves – 4.6% TSB

FPL GW2 Transfer Tips: Players to BUY - Strand Larsen

Another player who slipped under the radar in GW1 is Jørgen Strand Larsen. Most managers avoided him because of the daunting Manchester City opener, but even there he quietly impressed, registering 0.38 xG and getting off four shots in the box — all inside the penalty area. That’s a very encouraging sign against the toughest defence in the league.

The next eight to nine fixtures make him a gift for FPL managers. Wolves face all three promoted sides in that run, in addition to several mid-table opponents where goals are likely.

Strand Larsen comes into this campaign on the back of 14 league goals last season, and early signs suggest he’s at the heart of Wolves’ attack. To sweeten the deal, he also looks the most likely penalty taker — always a golden ticket in FPL.

At just 4.6% ownership, he’s a genuine differential who can separate your team from the pack. If you’re looking for a forward to hold long-term and free up cash for premium midfielders, Strand Larsen fits the bill perfectly.

FPL GW2 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD

Ollie Watkins (£9.0m) – FWD, Aston Villa – 25.7% TSB

FPL Gameweek 2 Transfer Tips: Players to HOLD ~ Ollie Watkins (£9.0m)

It’s understandable why nearly 200,000 managers have already moved Watkins on — a blank in GW1 is never pretty, especially when expectations were high. But let’s not be too hasty here. Watkins is no stranger to slow starts, yet his overall track record speaks volumes. He has outscored Haaland in each of the past two seasons, and his pre-season form (5 goals, 1 assist) underlined just how sharp he looked coming into the campaign.

Yes, he blanked, but the underlying numbers weren’t disastrous. And importantly, he now faces his former club Brentford, against whom he has an incredible record: 6 goals and 2 assists in 7 games. That kind of historical form should not be ignored. Add to that Aston Villa’s kind fixture run beyond GW2, and it becomes clear why Watkins is a classic “Don’t Buy, Don’t Sell” case.

If you already own him, patience is the smarter play.

Viktor Gyökeres (£9.0m) – FWD, Arsenal – 24.8% TSB

FPL Gameweek 2 Transfer Tips: Players to HOLD ~ Viktor Gyökeres (£9.0m)

Another premium forward who disappointed in GW1 with a solitary point return is Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres. For frustrated owners, the temptation to ship him out is strong, but context is important here. With Kai Havertz sidelined through injury, Gyökeres’ minutes are now much safer, and early reports suggest he could also be on penalty duties — a huge boost for his FPL potential.

Arsenal’s FPL Gameweek 2 fixture is against a promoted side, which was likely a key reason managers brought Gyökeres in to begin with. The blank in GW1 does sting, but it doesn’t justify abandoning the plan after just one game. Strikers thrive on rhythm and confidence, and all it takes is one good performance to get the ball rolling. Unless you’re desperate to free up funds for another move, the sensible approach is to hold Gyökeres for at least another week.

Havertz injury update: Arsenal forward Kai Havertz set for spell out with knee injury. Assessments on 26yo Germany int’l at early stage so prognosis + duration unclear.

FPL Gameweek 2 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL

Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m) – FWD, West Ham – 14.2% TSB

FPL Gameweek 2 Transfer Tips: Players to SELL ~ Bowen

Let’s be honest — Bowen was always something of a one-week punt for GW1. The punt didn’t land, and now it’s time to move on. His xGI of just 0.2 against newly promoted Sunderland underlined how little attacking threat he actually posed, and the reclassification from midfielder to forward has significantly dented his appeal. Forwards lose out on clean sheet points, and his goals now carry less upside compared to last season.

On top of that, West Ham’s fixture list doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, with tougher games looming on the horizon.

Bowen remains a talented player, but the FPL scoring system doesn’t favour him in his new role. With better forward options in similar price brackets, it feels like the right time to say goodbye.

Jeremie Frimpong (£6.0m) – DEF, Liverpool – 29.2% TSB

FPL Gameweek 2 Transfer Tips: Players to SELL ~ Frimpong

Frimpong is the most-owned defender in the game, but GW1 was a harsh reminder of the risks involved. Despite the pre-season hype and his goal in the Community Shield, he lasted just long enough to collect a single point. The ongoing rotation threat from Conor Bradley makes his minutes highly uncertain, and owning a defender who might not even start regularly is always a recipe for frustration.

To make matters worse, Liverpool’s fixture list is as red as a ripe tomato — a gauntlet of tough games that hardly screams clean sheet potential.

While Frimpong remains an exciting attacking option when he does play, the risk-reward balance feels heavily tilted against managers who persist with him right now.

That said, Frimpong is more of a “soft sell”. If your squad has bigger fires to put out, you can hold for another week and reassess. But if you’re sitting on a free transfer and need stability in defence, reallocating those funds might be the smarter play.

Also, do note, Slot post-game mentioned that Frimpong “felt his hamstring a bit” and that was why he was subbed off.

  1. While I agree with most of your assessments, I would switch Bowen and Gyokeres’ categories. Bowen is the main attacking threat on West Ham now, and Arsenal have many other avenues to attack through. I would sell Gyokoeres and hold Bowen based on what we saw in GW1.

Side Note: reading through the articles posted on this site has really helped me think through the way I want to set up my team last season and through the preseason this year. Keep up the good work!
