FPL Gameweek 28 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold & Sell

Seldom has the world of FPL been thrown into chaos during a week with no action—but that’s exactly what just happened.

FA Cup results have sparked a frenzy among FPL managers, much like a cat among pigeons. Two key players (Cunha and Gordon) saw red, while another two (Isak and Mateta) suffered significant injuries, sending transfer plans into disarray.

This week also reinforced a key FPL lesson: patience. Two of the three most transferred-in forwards are now red-flagged, highlighting the delicate balance between jumping early to beat price rises and waiting for crucial late-week updates.

With a blank gameweek (BGW) and multiple double gameweeks (DGWs) on the horizon, strategic thinking, tactical planning, and clinical execution have never been more important.

So, let’s start with our BUY-HOLD-SELL article for this GW, sponsored by …. Well, nobody. We are poor, but you can help here if you want 😊

FPL GW28 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY

PS – I am not mentioning Salah, as he is non-negotiable at this point. I assume he is already in your team.

Palace Patriots

Daniel Muñoz (£5.0m) – DEF, Crystal Palace – 12.8% TSB

Maxence Lacroix (£4.5m) – DEF, Crystal Palace – 1.0% TSB

100% dribbles & 80% duels: Crystal Palace ace was even better than Lacroix

Muñoz is flying off the FPL shelves this week, and it’s easy to see why. Since GW21, he’s been the guy in defense, leading in:

🏆 1st – Goal Involvements, Assists, Big Chances Created
🥈 2nd – FPL Points Scored
🥉 3rd – BPS

But while Muñoz is stealing the spotlight, Lacroix is lurking in the shadows like an underrated action hero. Since GW21, he’s been:

🔫 1st – Shots on Target, Shots in the Box, Bonus
💣 2nd – Shots
💀 3rd – xG

And just when you thought it couldn’t get better, their GW28 opponents, Ipswich, are basically a defensive disaster zone. They rank in the Bottom 5 for every key metric:

🚪 Shots Conceded, xGC, Goals Conceded, Clean Sheets—you name it, they struggle.

Offensively? Even worse. Ipswich is rock bottom for:

❌ Shots in the Box (20th), Big Chances (20th), xG (19th), Goals Scored (18th)

Translation? If you’re looking for defenders who could haul big, Muñoz and Lacroix are the guys.

⚠️ One catch—Palace blank in GW29, so if you bring them in, make sure you’ve got a backup plan (or just accept the chaos). That said, they do face Southampton in GW30, so the fun doesn’t have to end just yet.

Get them now or regret it later, especially if you’re planning to use Free Hit in GW29!

Beto (£5.1m) – FWD, Everton – 6.4% TSB

Everton: Beto on 'haters' and social media criticism - BBC Sport

With two of the most popular forwards sidelined, FPL managers will be hunting for replacements—and Beto stands out as the perfect candidate.

Since GW24, among all forwards, Beto ranks:

  • 1st for Shots on Target
  • 1st for Big Chances
  • 1st for Goals Scored
  • 1st for Goal Involvements
  • 1st for FPL Points
  • 1st for BPS
  • 2nd for Bonus Points
  • 2nd for Shots in the Box
  • 3rd for Shots
  • 3rd for xPts

His short-term fixtures are highly appealing.

But what makes him even more valuable is his availability in BGW29—a major advantage for managers looking to navigate the blank gameweek without burning a chip.

If you’re looking for a forward who can deliver in the coming weeks, Beto is your man.

FPL GW28 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD

Cole Palmer (£11.1m) – MID, Chelsea – 59.4% TSB

Chelsea star Cole Palmer issues injury update ahead of crucial clash against Arsenal

Cole Palmer is the most transferred-out midfielder this week, and the frustration is justified—just one assist in his last six outings isn’t what FPL managers signed up for.

However, a deeper dive into the numbers tells a different story.

Midfielders (GW22-27)xGIPts
M.Salah5.180
Mbeumo3.933
Szoboszlai3.748
Palmer3.517
Minteh3.437
O.Dango3.238
I.Sarr3.228
Mitoma3.035
Elanga2.924
Luis Díaz2.835
B.Fernandes2.834

Palmer has been incredibly unlucky, with midfielders posting far lower xGI still managing to outscore him.

This could be the perfect opportunity to show patience. Chelsea take on Leicester at home this week, a side with one of the league’s leakiest defences. Given Palmer’s elite underlying stats and a favourable fixture run, he still has the potential to deliver. Selling him now might just be a decision you regret.

Chris Wood (£7.2m) – FWD, Nott’m Forest – 44.4% TSB

Nottingham Forest news: Opinion - Chris Wood remains main man after failed striker moves - BBC Sport

Numbers don’t lie—since GW19, Wood has been the ultimate FPL forward. Despite being the second most transferred-out unflagged striker this week, his consistency has been undeniable. In that period, he ranks:

  • 1st for FPL points
  • 1st for BPS
  • 1st for Bonus Points
  • 1st for Goals Scored
  • 1st for Assists
  • 1st for Goal Involvements

And it’s not just form—his schedule looks enticing, with a prime fixture in BGW29 that adds to his appeal.

Offloading him now feels like a knee-jerk reaction when he still has the potential to rack up points in the weeks ahead. Patience could pay off handsomely.

FPL GW28 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL

Matheus Cunha (£7.0m) – FWD, Wolves – 14.7% TSB

Wolverhampton Wanderers endured a tough FA Cup exit on Saturday, bowing out after a penalty shootout loss to AFC Bournemouth. However, the disappointment of elimination was compounded by the loss of their key forward, Matheus Cunha, who now faces a spell on the sidelines due to suspension.

Cunha, Wolves’ leading scorer with 13 goals in 26 league appearances, was given his marching orders at Vitality Stadium following a heated altercation with Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez. The referee, Sam Barrott, showed him a straight red, and the Brazilian’s reluctance to leave the pitch only added to the drama, requiring intervention to escort him off.

With the FA likely to impose the standard three-game suspension for violent conduct, Cunha is set to miss Wolves’ upcoming Premier League fixtures. Given his absence, it’s a logical move for FPL managers to offload him and look for alternative attacking options.

Anthony Gordon (£7.4m) – MID, Newcastle – 11.8% TSB

Anthony Gordon injury concern for Newcastle United as £156m blow confirmed ahead of Luton Town

Anthony Gordon’s fiery encounter with Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke proved costly, as the Newcastle winger received a straight red card for making contact with his opponent’s face. As a result, he is set to serve a three-match suspension.

Newcastle have opted against challenging the decision, meaning Gordon is confirmed to miss the upcoming Cup final, the away clash at West Ham on March 10, and the home fixture against Brentford on April 2.

With crucial gameweeks on the horizon, holding onto an unavailable asset isn’t ideal. This presents a prime opportunity to part ways with Gordon and reinvest in midfielders who can make a real impact.
