Top FPL Gameweek 5 Captain Picks Based on Analysis & Metrics

After the first international break (and a long one), we are back with the Captaincy Metrics for FPL Gameweek 5 and it would be interesting to see if the Manchester City striker would be beaten for the second time this season as a certain Son looks to be back in form, or will it be one of the other 3.

Manchester City’s Erling Haaland tops the polls with 45% of the votes. He’s followed by Tottenham’s Heung Min Son (17%) and his teammate James Maddison (14%). The candidates list is rounded up by Mohammed Salah (9%) and Bukayo Saka (5%).

Erling Haaland tops our picks for Underlying Numbers. With 20 Shots Inside the Box, 7 Big Chances in total, and an xG total of 4.63, as he leads the Attacking Stats factor for players in consideration. 

Mohammed Salah comes in behind Haaland for Underlying Numbers. With 9 Shots Inside the Box, 2 Big Chances in total, and an xG total of 2.49.

Bukayo Saka, with 10 Shots Inside the Box, 3 Big chances, and an xG total of 2.23, takes the third spot.

Tottenham’s James Maddison comes fourth behind Saka with 9 Shots Inside the Box, 2 Big Chances, and xG total of 1.61.
Heung Min Son gets the last place with 7 Shots Inside the Box, 2 Big Chances, and an xG of 1.39.

Manchester City have the best underlying numbers of the teams in comparison to the last 6 games. A total of 51 Shots Inside the Box and 11 Big Chances, helps in boosting their xG to 8.94, which is the highest of all teams in question. 

Arsenal come in behind City, with 47 Shots Inside the Box, 10 Big Chances in Total, and xG at 8.32.

Liverpool come behind Arsenal with 42 Shots Inside the Box, 12 Big Chances in Total, and an xG of 7.71.  
Tottenham take the last spot with 48 Shots Inside the Box, 11 Big Chances in Total, and an xG of 7.35.

In the Third Phase of the Article, we look at the Fixture Difficulty of our 5 Candidates. 

We will use Drafthound’s odds for a Team scoring at least one goal in the Gameweek and the Odds of Scoring more than 2.5 goals in the Gameweek as a whole. 

Tottenham take the first spot, with a 91% chance of scoring at least 1 goal this Gameweek and a 52% chance of scoring more than 2 goals this Gameweek.

Liverpool are behind Tottenham, with an 89% chance of scoring at least 1 goal this week, and a 44% chance of scoring more than 2 goals. 
Manchester City and Arsenal come in behind the two teams together, with an 86% chance of scoring at least 1 goal this week, and a 38% chance of scoring more than 2 goals.

In the Fourth Phase of the article, I have used the Anytime Returns and Projected Points Tools available at Fantasy Football Hub. With the help of the Anytime Returns Tool, I have derived the Safety Rank, which helps in determining the Safest Captaincy Option of the week, while I have used the Projected Points Tool to determine the Explosion Rank, which helps in determining the Most Explosive Option of the week. 

Erling Haaland has the highest Anytime Returns Projections at 73%, while his Projected Points stand at 8.1 for the week.

Heung Min Son has an Anytime Returns Projection at 64%, and the Projected Points at 5.9 this week, giving him the second spot.

Mohammed Salah has an Anytime Returns Projections at 60% and Projected Points at 6.6, which puts him in third place. 

James Maddison has an Anytime Returns Projections at 57% and Projected Points at 6.0, which puts him in fourth place
Lastly, Bukayo Saka has an Anytime Returns Projections of 47% while the Projected Points stand at 5.3 pushing him to the last spot.

In the Fifth and Final Phase of the article, I have aggregated the Ranks derived above to pull out the Cumulative Rank Factor (CRF). The Candidate having the lowest Cumulative Rank Factor is the most ideal Captaincy Option according to this metric. 

Erling Haaland returns to be the best option this week, topping the table with a CRF value of 7.

Haaland is followed by Mohammed Salah who takes the second place with a CRF value of 11

Heung Min Son takes third place with a CRF value of 12.
James Maddison and Bukayo Saka take the fourth and fifth spots respectively, with a CRF value of 13 and 14.
