FPL GW4 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

1) Wildcard in FPL GW4 vs FPL GW5?

Wildcard in FPL GW4 vs FPL GW5?

While it’s very team-dependent, using the Wildcard right now will not give you any apparent advantages. We have the International Break after GW4, and rotational issues/injuries can come up during the same time.

Arsenal and Man Utd attackers are facing each other, and I expect their match to be a high-scoring game. None of them are obvious sells. Gabriel and the Brighton picks can be easily swapped with ‘1 or 2 Free Transfers’.

On the plus side, Wildcarding now will help you load up on players from Chelsea and prepare a bit early for Newcastle’s good run of games. The negative here is the need for more information, especially on Newcastle and their attackers in general. Plus, there is the obvious argument of players picking up knocks and injuries during the International Break.

Unless you are in a position where you have 4-5 players at the risk of not starting/injured this week, I’d avoid using the Wildcard right now. Gameweek 5/6 can be a better time to use it as the European games (Champions League, Europa, etc.) will begin. We have more information regarding in-form players, starting lineups, better fixture swings, etc.

2) Who are the best Gabriel/Shaw replacements ahead of FPL GW4?

Best Gabriel/Shaw replacements ahead of FPL GW4

I would suggest you consider selling Gabriel, especially if you don’t have a proper 3rd playing defender acting as your backup player. There is a good chance Gabriel doesn’t start in GW4 or, worse, comes off the bench to give you a single point. There are some great alternatives available.

Ben Chilwell is still the pick of the lot (if you don’t have him). He is 3rd for xGI among all defenders and plays a very advanced wing-back role. Get him on priority if you don’t have him. There is also an option to get Malo Gusto in place of Chilwell. The attacking defender is only £4.1m in the game and has started the season strongly. One thing to note with Gusto is that he is playing in the Reece James position and is expected to make way for the Chelsea captain. So, he may be a short-term fix.

Next come the Man City defenders. The upcoming fixtures are good, but my biggest worry is rotation, especially with the Champions League starting soon. Gvardiol and Dias remain the most nailed picks in the City defence. You can choose either depending on your budget. Akanji missed the GW3 game because of illness. I won’t buy him over Gvardiol/Dias this week, but if I have him, I’d hold him.

If you don’t want to worry about rotation, you can consider Destiny Udogie from Tottenham. He will help you save some money (£4.6m). Even though Tottenham look a bit all over the place at the back, Udogie has shown good attacking prowess and is likely to get attacking returns going forward.

Another exciting direction to look for Gabriel owners is to get in a Newcastle defender. The team ranks the 5th best for xGC conceded in the first 3 games, and we can expect them to keep it tight at the back. Coming to their players, Sven Botman looks like the most obvious pick at £4.5m, but he has a flag on him right now. You can even consider going for Fabian Schär (£5m) if he is out. He is nailed in the Newcastle defence and possesses some goal threat.

3) What to do with Man Utd and Arsenal attackers?

What to do with Man Utd and Arsenal attackers

Arsenal play Man Utd this week, and their attackers will be going up against one another. Many managers have double-ups in Saka + Martinelli and Rashford + Fernandes as a part of their midfield 5. Now, what should you do in such a scenario? It depends on who your 5th midfielder is.

Suppose you already have one of Maddison/Sterling/Foden. In that case, you don’t necessarily have to sell any of your Arsenal/Man Utd attackers. I don’t see Man Utd or Arsenal keeping a clean sheet in this one, and there are points to be gained here.

I recommend having one of Maddison/Sterling/Foden this week. I’d go for it if selling one of Saka/Martinelli/Rashford/Bruno is the play. Among all 4, it’s safe to say that I am happy keeping both Saka and Bruno. They look like better FPL assets right now and are worth holding. It’s a close call between Rashford and Martinelli, and I don’t have a preference for selling one this week.

I would only sell these players to get in the likes of Maddison/Foden/Sterling. For any other players, I’d recommend selling your Brighton/Crystal Palace players (also only if you have to).

4) Which FPL midfielders to target Ahead of FPL Gameweek 4?

PL midfielders to target Ahead of FPL Gameweek 4

With midfielders being the primary discussion this week, there is much to consider regarding transfers and which midfielders make the final cut for your GW4 team.

As mentioned earlier, all Arsenal and Man Utd midfielders are OK holds. Still, you can look at some good alternatives if you want to sell them.

Sterling is at the top of our MIDs to target this week. He was the top FPL scorer in GW3 with 19 points, getting 3 attacking returns (2G+1A). We know that he has known FPL pedigree (5 of his last 6 seasons have been with 150+ points).

He has regained some confidence this season and will likely become a mainstay in the Chelsea attack. No Europe for Chelsea will also help him with rotation, and he is an explosive midfield option right now.

We are coming to James Maddison. From Tottenham’s 3 games that we have seen so far, everything is flowing through him. He is at the heart of Spurs’s attacking plays, is on set pieces and can likely be on penalties as well.

Maddison is ranked 4th among all MIDs for xGI. He has already got 3 attacking returns (1G+2A) in the first games. All this at less than £8m right now looks like a bargain

Tottenham’s next two games are against Burnley and Sheffield Utd before two tricky games against Arsenal and Liverpool. The latter two haven’t looked great defensively, and Tottenham and Maddison, in particular, can get some good FPL points.

Many have forgotten about Phil Foden after he was benched in GW3. This was due to illness, and I believe he is being underlooked, with most managers focusing on Sterling and Maddison.

Foden will likely return to the starting XI for Man City and is up against Fulham this week. Fulham has the worst xGC among all teams in the first 3 games, and their defence could be clearer. GW4 has massive potential for Foden, who has taken the creator role without the injured KDB.

Managers like me who went with Bryan Mbeumo from GW1 onwards benefitted as he scored 23 points in the first two games. This week, Mbeumo is up against Bournemouth, the 5th worst side for xGC conceded in the first 3 games. Bournemouth’s defence is also very leaky like Fulham, and they have conceded the joint 2nd most goals this season.

Mbeumo’s goals this season include penalties, and you can argue that won’t continue every week. While this is true, his npxGI numbers are good too. We know he plays a crucial role in Brentford’s attack and will continue to do so. If money is tight, he is a great budget midfielder to look at even now.

Jarrod Bowen looks more like a one-week punt, which works great if you plan to use your Wildcard in GW5 right after the International Break. In GW4, Bowen faces Luton Town, a side who have conceded the joint 3rd most big chances and have the 2nd worst xGC among all teams. Bowen is a great shout if you want to be aggressive this week.

5) Who is the best budget striker right now?

Best budget FPL striker ahead of FPL GW4?

With so many good options in midfield, managers are playing 5 across the midfield. That means playing with 2 strikers up top. Considering one of the strikers is Man City’s Erling Haaland, managers are looking for the ideal 2nd striker.

Brighton’s Joao Pedro was a popular pick before the start of the season. Still, the Seagulls striker has started the last two games from the bench, and managers have lost patience with him.

You can look at Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea if you are looking for replacements. He has looked lively for Chelsea and currently ranks 2nd for xGI among all forwards (just behind Haaland). He has a suitable fixture run and can be a great Chelsea attacker to target right now. He is slightly more than £7m right now, and you will have to find some additional money if you upgrade the Pedro position here.

If you can’t stretch your budget that much but have some money in the bank, you can even target Yoane Wissa from Brentford. He has stepped in Toney’s absence and should be nailed in the Brentford attack. Wissa is currently top for FPL points scored among all forwards and has the season very strongly.

Julián Álvarez is another pick to consider if you seek value in attack. He is priced less than players like Jackson, Watkins, Jesus, etc. and can provide immense value. He has that standard rotation risk like it is with all Man City players, but I expect Alvarez to get more minutes this season. He has played the whole 90 mins in all three games, getting 1G+1A so far. He is an excellent pick among budget forwards if you want to be aggressive.

Coming to the most expensive forward in this list, we have Darwin Nunez. The Liverpool striker scored a 13-minute brace against Newcastle, which won them the game. He has only played about 40-odd minutes this season, which is the biggest worry here. Is he fit/nailed in that Liverpool attack? It makes him a high-risk reward option. Nunez is the pick with the most significant upside, and If you are okay with the risk, you can go with him from GW4.
