FPL GW2 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

1) Is it worth saving a transfer this week?

FPL GW2 Tips - Is it worth saving a transfer this week?

Avoiding making forced transfers right can be crucial for your rank in Fantasy Premier League. We have just started the season, and any mistakes you have made can easily be rectified. If you believe your team is in good shape and there aren’t any major issues to solve, saving a transfer is the right way.

You can only draw so many conclusions from one gameweek of information. It’s always better to be patient and get as much information as possible before moving.

No game-changing transfer trends are emerging apart from getting the likes of Chilwell and Estupinan for Gabriel/Stones. You can go on the offensive by bringing in a Liverpool attacker this week. You can even go for Foden/Maddison early and take advantage. Getting in Foden is a high-risk, high-reward strategy and might only suit a few FPL managers.

Unless you have picked a player at the risk of not starting in Gameweek 2 and you don’t have enough bench cover, you can save the transfer. This will give you two free transfers for Gameweek 3 and one additional gameweek worth of information which can be vital.

There is no right or wrong answer here, as there is no single way of playing FPL. It depends on how comfortable you are with your team this week and how much risk you will take. If any players would improve your squad, lock in that transfer before the deadline.

2) What to do with Gabriel/Stones ahead of FPL GW2?

FPL GW2 Tips - What to do with Gabriel/Stones ahead of FPL GW2

Gabriel was one of the most nailed defenders in Arsenal, having started all 38 games last season. Surprisingly, he was benched in Gameweek 1, and managers are looking to ship him out this week.

Stones missed out against Burnley because of an injury. He also didn’t start in the European Super Cup against Sevilla. He has now injured his hamstring in training post the Super Cup game and is now out of the GW2 fixture vs Newcastle and has become an easy sell!

Straight off, you should make a move if you don’t have Chilwell/Estupiñán in your team. You can take out Gabriel/Stones(The priority out is Stones if you have both Gabriel and Stones) and get either, depending on the budget. Both defenders were quite attacking, and with some decent fixtures coming up, they have the potential to do well.

The second strategy is to save some money. You can get in Malo Gusto(4.0 Million), who was playing regularly during pre-season, and now with Reece James out for an extended period due to another injury, Gusto could be a great option at just 4.0 million. You can then use the extra money from selling Stones/Gabriel to upgrade elsewhere.

Next 4 games for Chelsea: West Ham(A), Luton(H), Forest(H), Bournemouth(A)

One potential alternative to Gusto at RB spot for Chelsea is Disasi who is naturally a CB but could cover at RB if needed!

I won’t use a transfer for any other defender. Going for Saliba now is not worth it, as Gabriel might return to the playing XI after Timber’s injury news. The only other move I’d consider is going for Rico Henry from Brentford and getting some additional money in the bank for future moves. The Brentford defender was excellent against Tottenham and had a good set of fixtures coming up.

3) Who are the best Midfielders to target for FPL GW2?

FPL GW2 Tips - Who are the best Midfielders to target for FPL GW2?

There is a considerable variety of MIDs, and nailing the right one can be tricky this season. With Salah being a little expensive and disturbing the overall balance of many teams, the conversation around the best MIDs is wide open.

FPL managers were left frustrated after Man Utd’s game against Wolves in GW1. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford blanked, and many managers are already losing patience with the pair. I want to give them time and hold till GW3 when they play Nottingham Forest and can return big. Still, if you don’t have any faith left in Rashford/Fernandes, you can take one of them out. I’d keep Rashford out of the two, as he still has a significantly higher goal threat and sell Fernandes.

You can go safer with James Maddison as the replacement. The Tottenham playmaker had a dream debut getting 2 assists and creating 6 chances in total. We know he is on set pieces, and most of Tottenham’s creativity will come through Maddison. I believe he can be a great pick at £7.5m.

If you are willing to chase the upside and okay with the rotation risk, Phil Foden is a tempting option. With KDB confirmed for 3-4 months, Foden can become a mainstay in the Man City attack. How Man City adapt and lineup with no KDB is somewhat unknown, but Foden can be a significant differential to help you gain some serious rank right now.

A short-term punt on Richarlison or one of the Liverpool MIDs is enticing, but I am not convinced of either direction. Luis Diaz will likely interest the maverick managers, especially if they don’t have Mohamed Salah and want to cover Liverpool’s great fixture against Bournemouth in GW2.

In the £6.5m price bracket, Bryan Mbeumo and Moussa Diaby are great picks. Both have started strong and have good fixtures coming up to warrant their selection. They also allow you to save some money and invest additional funds in other spots of your team.

4) Is Mohamed Salah worth a transfer for FPL GW2?

FPL GW2 Tips - Is Mohamed Salah worth a transfer for FPL GW2?

Salah vs No Salah was a considerable debate point before the season’s start. Managers having gone without him are worried this week as Liverpool play Bournemouth at home.

Mohamed Salah was okay against Chelsea. He secured an assist, hit the crossbar and could have had a goal, but it was ruled offside. While Salah played very well whenever he got the ball, Liverpool was poor in attack and couldn’t dominate proceedings against the Blues. To the surprise of many, he was taken off in the 76th minute and ended the game with 0.28 xG and 0.31 xA.

Coming to Gameweek 2 and it can be a different story for the Liverpool attacker. I expect Liverpool to control the game, and Salah should do well this week. However, Salah did play quite wide, so his goal-scoring opportunities may be slightly limited.

Here is his GW1 heatmap:

In isolation, Salah is a great pick this week. But before you jump on to him, assess the sacrifices you must make to accommodate him into your FPL team. Ensure the combination of players with Salah is stronger than the one you already have.

You may have to downgrade Watkins and move for Joao Pedro or an even cheaper pick to raise money for Salah. If you think the Salah combo is stronger than Watkins + whatever MID you are upgrading, make the move.

To me, it’s all about balance. Salah for my team becomes tricky as I can’t afford Joao Pedro, and there are no other strong alternatives. Even if I do get a route, I leave myself with little flexibility, and the only way to make some room and cash would be through Salah, which isn’t ideal.

5) Who is the 2nd best Man City attacker?

FPL GW2 Tips - Who is the 2nd best Man City attacker?

We got an update from Pep recently, where he spoke about the injury to KDB and his absence from football for 3-4 months. This has suddenly made FPL managers interested in high-upside picks Phil Foden and Julián Álvarez. Both are high-risk high-reward picks and can do well in attack if they get regular game time.

City played in the Super Cup this Wednesday against Sevilla, where we got some indication of how Pep will line up without De Bruyne in general. Foden started the game against Sevilla whereas Alvarez was on the bench.

Julian Alvarez (£6.5m) can benefit in KDB’s absence. He has started games in KDB’s absence before, and a similar trend could continue. Still, it won’t be his ideal position, and a more suited player for the role is Foden in midfield.

The England International has looked excellent whenever he has played in central midfield for City. He was involved in 37% of Man City’s goals when selected last season, 2nd only to Haaland (54%). He also ranks 4th for points per start among all City players for last season (5.6)

Both picks look pretty appealing, with Man City having a kinder upcoming run of fixtures. According to the Fixture Difficulty Ratings (FDR), four of their next six matches score only two, and it can’t get any better for the Citizens.

Note: The club also wants to sign Lucas Paqueta, who would undoubtedly be a direct replacement for KDB.

Watch out if Man City end up signing a replacement, but for now, Foden/Alvarez is a risk worth taking.

If I had to select one, I’d go to Alvarez right now. He will likely be a popular replacement for Joao Pedro in Gameweek 4 when Brighton’s fixture becomes tricky. Do monitor Foden’s minutes in the upcoming games and make the switch if he is the more nailed pick in the attack.

That will be all from my side for this week! All the best for FPL Gameweek 2, and I will see you all next week.
