FPL Gameweek 10 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold and Sell

Gameweek 9 of Fantasy Premier League proved to be a very eventful one with fortunes swaying between the extreme outcomes of Salah vs Haaland captainers and ‘fixture’ picks of Bowen and Maddison coming through big. While it may have established a ‘perma captain’ in Fantasy Premier League for the foreseeable future, the widely differing outcomes made me think about why I try to swerve ‘the obvious’ choices for these BUY, SELL, HOLD pieces all too many times so for this FPL Gameweek 10 buy, hold, sell piece, we’re going to go ahead and make some pretty obvious claims (but as always, backed by data so it can help you prioritise your moves).

FPL Gameweek 10 Transfer Tips: Two players to BUY

1) Phil Foden (8.1, MID, Manchester City)

FPL Gameweek 10 Transfer Tips: Two players to BUY ~ Phil Foden

I’ve always liked Phil Foden as an FPL asset but I let the fear of a GW12 blank steer me away from bringing him in and with performances like the one he put up against Manchester United, I’m beginning to wonder if he’d outscore similarly priced assets around him DESPITE that blank, in the next 4 GWs; It’s certainly probable!

Foden vs Man United in FPL GW9

6 shots, 5 from inside the box, 4 on target and an xG of 1.08 against Manchester United. I understand that another stumbling block to bringing in Foden might be the 3 ManCity player limit but for GW8 wildcarders and other KDB owners who’s plan was to move him on to Salah by GW11 or 12, Foden is the ideal third City asset when that opportunity arises. City will score a lot of goals and Haaland’s effective ownership is sure to be close to 200% most weeks moving forward – Foden can be a great edge to move ahead.

2) James Maddison (8.1, MID, Leicester City)

FPL Gameweek 10 Transfer Tips: Two players to BUY ~ James Maddison

Maddison has been sensational for Leicester City since the start of last season and has developed a bit of a reputation as a ‘flat track bully’ – he averages over 11ppg against promoted sides between the start of last season and now. He’s been in devastatingly good touch, he’s scoring majestic free kicks with incredible regularity and is coming in fresh off an 18-pointer against Nottingham Forest.

James Maddison vs Nottingham Forest in FPL GW8

Despite not taking a shot from inside the box, Maddison scored 2 goals from an xG of 0.20 and had an xGOT of 0.74 suggesting he’s placing shots better than the average player from those positions. He created 4 chances including 2 ‘big chances’ from an xA of 0.70. He looks in the form of his life, he’s been scoring fantastic goals against Forest, Spurs and Southampton in previous games and he’s facing a Bournemouth team who are surprisingly good as a home defense but do give up a good number of shots. We’re backing Maddison to continue his run.

FPL Gameweek 10 Transfer Tips: Two players to HOLD

1) Mohamed Salah (12.8, MID, Liverpool)

FPL Gameweek 10 Transfer Tips: Two players to HOLD ~ Mo Salah

The Egyptian King just hasn’t quite been the same with his finishing ever since African Cup of Nations last season despite putting up good xG numbers last season however this season his xG/90 has dropped and he looks to be getting his touches wider out this season per the eye test. Even though we’re aware this feels like stating the obvious, Salah is the highest transferred out player in FPL this week at the time of writing but we’d be confident suggesting a hold.

Liverpool have tricky ties against Arsenal and then Manchester City in their next 3 GWs however they have a fixture in GW12 unlike the aforementioned two form teams thus making this seem like the wrong time to move him on to another premium asset (assuming everyone has Haaland). Salah also started centrally last game against Brighton and looked very threatening before being pushed wide again by second half subs.

Mo Salah vs Brighton in FPL GW9

Mo had 5 shots, 4 from inside the box for an xG of 0.56 against Brighton and also created a ‘big chance’. He was unfortunate not to come away with more returns even though that will hardly seem like any consolation for armband-backers this week.

Yet, the underlying numbers look good, Liverpool have a fixture in GW12 unlike ManCity and then their fixture turn kinder till the World Cup break meaning if you own Salah right now, he’s a very easy hold.

2) Ollie Watkins (7.2, FWD, Aston Villa)

FPL Gameweek 10 Transfer Tips: Two players to HOLD ~ Ollie Watkins

A GW9 wildcard was a good time to play the fixtures and an International break injury to Aleksander Isak opened the door to a mid-priced FWD – while most went to Toney or Solanke, Watkins run of Leeds, Forest, Chelsea, Fulham and Brentford would have caught the eye.

Despite Villa looking woeful this season and failing to score all game including 40 minutes against the 10-men of Leeds United, there were some positives to take at least in the underlying numbers for Watkins.

Ollie Watkins vs Leeds in FPL GW9

The Englishmen had 6 shots from inside the box for an xG of 1.18. His xGOT of 0.40 suggests what the issue with Watkins is – his finishing ability lets him down leading him to underperform his xG numbers. However, it’s encouraging that he notched up these stats and he has a run of two promoted sides that conceded 4 goals apiece this week in his next 3.

FPL Gameweek 10 Transfer Tips: Two players to SELL

1) Trent-Alexander Arnold (7.4, DEF, Liverpool)

FPL Gameweek 10 Transfer Tips: Two players to SELL ~ Trent-Alexander Arnold

I dislike having to pick well-owned players and suggest them for a sale because of how easily quality players can turn their form around and make you look silly and here, I’m recommending selling a player that’s been my favourite FPL asset of the past 4 seasons.

Trent used to be an untouchable in my FPL team however with Liverpool’s defensive struggles this season and a dip in his attacking numbers, I’m finding it hard to justify the premium outlay on him with fixtures against Arsenal and City up next – games in which Liverpool are expected to score but not likely to keep a clean sheet. With premiums like Haaland, Kane, and Salah all being appealing while mid-priced midfielders all exploding into life – Maddison, Foden, Bowen, Saka, Zaha, Trossard – we think the money could be better used elsewhere. Trent is an elite ‘attacking’ player and will still bring in attacking output as a defender however at this point of time, he may not be the best ‘value’ option for your squad.

2) Ruben Dias (5.9, DEF, Manchester City)

FPL Gameweek 10 Transfer Tips: Two players to SELL ~ Ruben dIAS

Similarly, I’m going to recommend another defender who I’d suggest moving away from. Ruben Dias had been a mainstay for the City defense a couple of years ago but last year even he saw some rotation. That has continued this season with the addition of Akanji who’s slotted into that team seamlessly and now with Laporte returning to fitness, Pep has quality centre back options on his hand suggesting no option might be ‘nailed’ in the middle of the defense. I’d go as far as to say that at this point, I wouldn’t even be confident that Ruben Dias is part of Pep’s ‘first choice’ pairing – if such a thing exists. Dias is sitting at close to 10% ownership on FPL – I’d expect to see that half itself in the coming weeks.
