FPL Players and Teams to target from FPL Gameweek 9

The upcoming period is going to be a crucial one for FPL managers. After a fairly tedious start of the season due to a select few players performing, the template is slowly changing. Many will have recently wildcarded and others will be wildcarding this week. Whether you’re on wildcard or not, the fixtures will play a major part in deciding your transfers for the short-term future. As such, we’re going to look at which teams have the best run and the players to target from those teams from FPL Gameweek 9- Gameweek 12.

Fixture Ticker for GW9-GW12 from Fantasy Football Fix

Teams and Players to Target from FPL Gameweek 9

Chelsea

It’s difficult to predict how Chelsea are going to play under Graham Potter, but with their upcoming run of Crystal Palace, Wolves Aston Villa, and Brentford, some investment should definitely be on the cards, whether you’re on wildcard or not.

Reece James £6.0M

Teams and Players to Target from FPL Gameweek 9- Reece James

I’ll assume the majority of you already have James, but if you haven’t he’s as close to essential as anybody. You could quite conceivably argue that James is Chelsea’s most potent attacking threat. At his price and with the clean sheet potential over the next 4, he’s a no-brainer.

Raheem Sterling £10.0M

Teams and Players to Target from FPL Gameweek 9- Raheem Sterling

Sterling could be an excellent pick over the next stretch of fixtures. Many won’t go to him due to the awkward price point. Sterling is neither here nor there, falling bang in the middle of the £8M and £12M price bracket so he could end up flying under the radar. He already has 4 returns in the first 6 games including 3 goals in the past 3. What’s more, in the one match Potter has been in charge for, Sterling seemed to occupy the hybrid left wing back and forward position. On the face of it, Sterling playing in a defensive role doesn’t attract but given the success Potter playing Trossard in that position at Brighton has yielded, it could be far more promising than meets the eye. It should be said that we’re going off a sample size of one game and that could merely have been an experiment.

Sterling could also be the perfect replacement for those still on De Bruyne and looking to come off due to the blank gameweek. At the moment, the general consensus seems to be that Mohamed Salah is the natural replacement for De Bruyne but I’d tip Sterling to outscore Salah over the next 4. If on wildcard, I’d definitely start with and if you’re on De Bruyne or even Salah, I’d consider moving off fairly soon.

I’m not sure there are any other Chelsea assets I’d be going on at this moment in time. There are a couple that could potentially become assets, Fofana and Chillwell may be of interest soon but particularly in Chillwell’s case, its a matter of how much game time he’ll receive.

Bournemouth

One glance at Bournemouth’s league position doesn’t make for particularly great reading. They’ve managed 8 points from 7 games and have a goal difference of −13. However, if you take out the anomalous 9-0 against Liverpool and the defeats to City and Arsenal, they haven’t been beaten by a non-big 6 side.

In their next four games, they have arguably the best run out of any team, facing Brentford, Leicester, Fulham and Southampton. With a fixture run like that and the promise they’ve shown thus far, some investment is definitely on the cards, particularly given that all of their assets are priced very generously.

Dominic Solanke £5.7M

Teams and Players to Target from FPL Gameweek 9- Solanke

In any other season, Solanke’s 29 goals in the Championship would have made all sorts of headlines. However, he was somewhat overshadowed by Alexander Mitrovic’s ridiculous tally of 43. For context, Ivan Toney scored 30 in the season Brentford were promoted and he was player of the month at the start of last season.

So far this season, Solanke has only scored once in 5 games but there have been a number of mitigating factors for that. He missed two games due to injury and returned for the second half of the disaster against Liverpool. It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if he scores 3 or 4 goals between now and GW12 and at his price that’s superb value. His ownership of 0.6% means he’ll act as a great differential if he does come off.

Jordan Zemura £4.4M

Zemura is another player who has gone under the radar a little bit. Last season, despite missing a large chunk of games through injury, he scored 3 times and provided an assist and was among Bournemouth’s most threatening attacking players. He’s already bagged an assist this season along with 2 clean sheets to boot. He could be an ideal fourth defender in the next 4.

To add to his appeal, you’ll likely want your first sub to start in GW12 due to the aforementioned blank for Man City and Arsenal. Bournemouth’s match against Southampton that week is as good a fixture as you could hope for so that strengthens his case further.

Marcus Tavernier £4.9M

This pick is more based on eye test and gut feeling than any statistics. Tavernier has looked lively in all of Bournemouth’s games and has been on some set-pieces too. Billing at £0.4M has gained some attention but if I were buying now and were looking for a starting cheap midfielder, Tavaneer would be the one I’d go for.

Crystal Palace

Palace are a bit of a tricky one. Though they have an extended great run from GW10, their GW9 fixture Vs Chelsea doesn’t look particularly enticing. That being said, if you’re on wildcard I’d definitely invest in them from the outset.

Wilfried Zaha £7.2M

Teams and Players to Target from FPL Gameweek 9- Zaha

With 4 goals in 5 starts so far this season, Zaha has been attracting plenty of attention, and that will only increase in the coming weeks. Furthermore, Zaha has already scored against Liverpool this year and has historically done well in the more difficult matches so the prospect of Chelsea in GW9 isn’t at all daunting. Following that, their run until the World Cup break appears the easiest of all teams over that period.

Mark Guehi £4.3M

Though their record hasn’t demonstrated it as of yet, Palace’s defence is among the sturdiest in the league. This hasn’t been reflected in their results yet, that is due to the opponents they have faced and they should keep a few between now and then. Guehi also presents a more than an adequate attacking threat and with the set-piece issues that Leicester, in particular, have had, a haul isn’t out of the question with him.

What’s more, as touched on with Bournemouth, Palace play Wolves in BGW12 when you’ll probably need to start him.

Anderson is also a perfectly fine pick but the fact that Guehi is £0.1M cheaper means its probably worth opting for Guehi.

Leicester City

Its rather unfortunate from an FPL perspective that Leicester are playing as badly as they are. They have as nice a run as any team coming up and if it wasn’t for their dier form there would be multiple players on the radar, as it is there’s only really one.

James Maddison £8.0M

Teams and Players to Target from FPL Gameweek 9- Maddison

Maddison was a differential pick in GW8, and his ownership may still be fairly low this week but he could very quickly become template. In a way, his start to the season hasn’t received the coverage it otherwise might have done due to how poor Leicester as a whole have been. Maddison returned in each of Leicester’s first three matches, missed Chelsea due to injury and managed another goal against Tottenham. He’s as likely as any Leicester player to return at the moment and with his upcoming run, he may even be a captaincy candidate, not least against Forest in the upcoming gameweek.

In spite of how appealing Leicester’s run is, its hard to justify any other options at this point. One of Iheanacho or Daka could become options due to their price but the fact that there is so much uncertainty surrounding which strikers will play at the moment means that its probably not worth hanging your hat on any of them.

Defensive assets such as Justin and Castagne could present themselves as options but given how leaky the Leicester defence is at this moment in time, its impossible to justify going with them over some of the other options in that price bracket.

Aston Villa

The final team we’ll feature in this article is Aston Villa. Villa are at the bottom of this list not because they have the least enticing fixtures, but simply because they’re a mind field when it comes to actually selecting viable FPL options. Their defence is where there appears to be the most clarity over who will start, but their upcoming fixtures of Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Southampton instinctively feel like they are more conducive for attacking players rather than defensive ones. That being said, there is one option that could prove to be fruitful.

Philippe Coutinho £6.7M

Admittedly, this is a real maverick pick, and it’s difficult to justify him over some of the other options in the price bracket that have been mentioned in this article. However, Coutinho was one of Villa’s most lively players against Southampton and on the few occasions that he has performed, it has usually been in streaks. If he hits one such purple patch over the next few fixtures, you could be the beneficiary of a massive differential.

Both Lucas Digne £4.7M(also an injury concern) and Mings £4.3M may find themselves in a few teams but I’d struggle to make a case of them over the other cheap defenders mentioned above, particularly given all of their upcoming opponents have had decent records in front of goals.
