The international break is finally over, and we are eight gameweeks away from the world cup break. The fixtures have been so perfectly split that this is going to be the most popular Gameweek for a Wildcard. In fact close to 7% of the managers have it active as it stands. As a result of which it is essential to get those lowly- owned players in your teams spot on. In this blog, we’ll look at the Top 6 FPL GW9 Differentials including one Ultra Differential pick with <1% ownership for GW9.
Note: The TSB mentioned is at the time of writing and is subject to change

FPL GW9 Differential Picks(<10% TSB)
Raheem Sterling vs Crystal Palace(A), £10.0, TSB: 9.5%
Chelsea have had a very difficult start to the first full season under the new ownership. They now have a new coach, in Graham Potter. Under the Englishman Chelsea played one game, in the Champions League against Salzburg. The Blues were solid in their 1-1 draw against the Austrian side.
Despite the troubles the West London side has had, one player who has stood up is new signing Raheem Sterling. The former Manchester City man is top for xG, xA, BCC, SIB, and almost all other key stats among Chelsea players.
This was all before Potter. In the Champions League game, Potter played him as Left wing-back. No, that is not as bad as it initially sounds. We would like to call it the Leandro Trossard position. A false wingback of sorts!
Sterling was by far the most advanced player for Chelsea, he scored their goal, he could have had at least another. Apart from that he was getting himself in goal scoring positions and had a lot of touches in the box.
Raheem Sterling has 7 goals and 3 assists in all competitions against Crystal Palace. Besides, all of the Blues’ games through to the world cup have an FDR rating of either 2 or 3. The Englishman therefore could be an explosive option for the next 8 GWs.
James Maddison vs Nottingham Forest (H), £7.9, TSB: 6.4%
Who would have thought that going into GW9, this fixture would be the battle of the bottom two? Indeed, both Leicester, and their opponents have had an underwhelming start to their campaigns. One team are still winless and the other despite assembling an entirely new squad haven’t got going yet!
But our focus is on Leicester and in particular, their talisman James Maddison. The Englishman has produced an attacking return in 4 of his 6 appearances. In all, he has 3 goals and an assist so far. He is top for shots, xG, goals, key passes and second only to Barnes for shots in the box among his teammates.
To be fair to the Foxes, they have faced 4 of the big 6 and an in-form Brighton in their opening seven games. That is probably the reason why the Foxes have stuck with Brendan Rodgers.
Notably, six of Leicester’s upcoming seven games have an FDR rating of 2. 74% of James Maddison’s attacking returns last season came against such oppositions. Therefore, now is the time to bank on the Englishman!
Darwin Nunez vs Brighton(H), £8.9, TSB: 6.3%
Liverpool have had a pretty dull start to the campaign. Jurgen Klopp’s men are in dire need of some inspiration. Leaving aside the Bournemouth game, Liverpool have scored only 7 goals in 5 matches. However, one player who has looked a constant threat is Darwin Nunez.
Before we mention the outcome of the above graphic, we would like to say that indeed, Haaland has played more than twice the minutes as Nunez. However, these stats show that in the time he has been on the pitch, the Uruguayan has proven to be a massive goal threat. Even in the Merseyside derby, but for Pickford’s heroics, he could have easily scored the winning goal for the Reds.
Liverpool take on Brighton this week, a team who will take the field for the first time since their manager left. This might be the perfect time to face the Seagulls and Liverpool will look to get back in the groove. We believe Nunez will be at the heart of it.
Thomas Soucek vs Wolves(H), £5.4, TSB: 1.2%
West Ham have had a terrible start to the season. The Hammers have won only one game so far and have picked up just 4 points from seven games. But to be fair to them, they played the likes of Chelsea, Spurs, Man City and in form Brighton.
David Moyes’ men have a fixture turn starting from this week. Four of their next five fixtures have an FDR rating 2. Therefore, now is the time to look at assets from the South London side.
One player who has looked close to his attacking best has been Tomas Soucek. Remember him from two seasons back when he used to pop up with goals for fun? That might happen again!
The midfielder tops the charts for shots in the box(11), xG(1.53), and big chances(2) among his compatriots. Besides, among players who are priced £6.5 or under, he is fourth best for shots in the box.
West Ham’s FPL GW9 opponents- Wolves have the fourth worst record for headed attempts conceded in the league so far this season. Soucek will soon go up against Man Utd and Bournemouth too. We all know that the Czech Republican gets a fair share of his goals with his head.
Timothy Castagne vs Nottingham Forest(H), £4.4, TSB: 1.1%
Yes, we do have a second player from the team that is rock bottom and has registered 1 point so far this season. As mentioned earlier, the Foxes have had a difficult run of fixtures to start the season. There is a sea of green as far as the fixture list is concerned, as a result it is worth considering their assets.
As we can see, Leicester are taking on teams that have struggled in front of goal so far. As a result of which the chances of them keeping clean sheets is high. Therefore it is wise to pick defensive assets from the Foxes
Castagne is the defender that we suggest managers should go with. This is because he has proven himself to be a goal threat over the years. He has registered 4 goals through the course of his Premier League career. Furthermore, he has had more shots in the box, more xG than any other Leicester defender so far this season. He has a goal and an assist to his name already.
FPL GW9 Ultra Differential Pick(<1% TSB)
Joe Willock vs Fulham(A), £4.9, TSB: 0.5%
Okay, you must already be wondering why are we suggesting a player who has got only 2 or 3 points so far this season in a game. We have two reasons. One, almost all of Newcastle’s goal threats are out injured or are not fully fit. Two, Willock has been threatening to get himself on the scoresheet for a while.
Willock has had the second most number of shots in the box among Newcastle players, only Almiron has had more. Adding on to that, he has the fourth best xG, after Isak, Wilson and Almiron.
Willock has not just been a goal threat, he has also been creative for Eddie Howe’s men. He has the third best xA. The attacking and creative mindset justifies why Willock is third best for xPts for the North East club. He is also the eighth best for xPts for midfielders/ forwards priced at £6.0 or under. Among these, players, only Willock is yet to register an attacking return. Given the fact that three of his next four games have FDR rating as 2, it may well happen soon!
