Champions League football returned last week, and it saw big points hauls from the likes of Mbappé, Lewandowski, and Haaland, and it also saw some shock results from Chelsea and Liverpool. The limitless chip is going to be quite popular for MD2, and if you are playing it this week then you are going to have a lot of premium assets that make a claim for captaincy. This article will look at the main players who are vying for the armband in MD2 and weigh up who are the best UCL Fantasy MD2 captaincy options for both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Best UCL Fantasy Captaincy Options for MD2
Day one: Tuesday 13th September
Bayern Munich vs Barcelona
Lewandowski returns to the Allianz Arena to face his former team, and he does so in great form – scoring a hat-trick in Barcelona’s opening UCL fixture and registering 6 goals and 2 assists in 5 matches (4 starts) in La Liga so far. After a brilliant 2021/22 season, he was 1st for goal contributions within the UCL, with a whopping 13 goals and 3 assists, and in the Bundesliga, he scored 35 goals in 34 games, with a further 3 assists. It is no wonder why he is predicted to score the most points of any player for MD2 – 10.2.
However, an away game against Bayern will not be as appealing a fixture. Bayern sit at the top of the Bundesliga table, having won 3 and drawn 3 games. Lewandowski’s goal-scoring ability is incredibly consistent, and given the strong captaincy contenders for Wednesday’s games, he is still a solid choice for the armband.
Bayern Munich are in great goal-scoring form, with a total of 19 goals in 6 Bundesliga matches. For this home fixture, opting for one of their premium midfielders as captain could be a great call, and you always have some top picks in Wednesday’s games to fall back on.
Mané moved to the German champions from Liverpool after having a very solid season – with 16 goals and 2 assists in 34 games (32 starts). He is now Bayern’s first-choice penalty taker, having scored 1 penalty so far in 6 games (5 starts), and an additional 2 non-penalty goals.
Sané had a brilliant 2021/22 UCL campaign, scoring 6 goals. He had a quieter season domestically, with 7 goals and 7 assists in 32 games, where he started 22 of them and tended to be rotated. He bagged 1 goal and 1 assist in their 2-0 victory over Inter last week and has 2 goals and 1 assist in 6 Bundesliga game – starting 3 of them. Bayern Munich come into this having drawn 2-2 with Stuttgart, and either of their premium midfielders would be good captaincy shouts for Tuesday.

Salah vs Ajax (H)
Liverpool will really be looking to bounce back in this home fixture, and despite their current form it is worth considering Salah. Last season, he shared the Golden Boot with Son having scored 23 goals and getting a further 12 assists. This season, Salah has managed 2 goals and 2 assists in 6 Premier League games, but Liverpool go into this game having been beaten by Napoli 4-1. As there are a lot of strong captaincy options for Wednesday then opting for Salah could be an interesting differential. However, Liverpool’s poor form will have to be considered.
Given the sheer amount of options in defence and Liverpool’s current form, I would avoid captaining Alexander-Arnold, and will most likely not be opting for a Liverpool defender on the limitless wildcard.

Viktoria Plzeň vs Internazionale
Inter began their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich, but come up against a Viktoria Plzeň side who conceded 5 goals against Barcelona in MD1.
Martinez had a great record in Serie A last season, with 21 goals and 3 assists in 35 games (28 starts). In the Champions League, however, he managed just 1 goal before Inter were knocked out in the round of 16. As a one-week punt, Martinez could provide great points, but with so many forward options in UCL Fantasy it could be difficult to include him, and would require you to sacrifice a higher owned player who could do some damage to your rank.
Dumfries is also a great MD2 pick. He is predicted to score 6 points, but that can definitely be beaten given his potential going forward. In 6 Serie A games (5 starts) he has 1 goal and 1 assist. Last season, he scored 5 and got 4 assists. With the high potential of a clean sheet, Dumfries could definitely provide some great differential points and I think he is an exciting captaincy option for Tuesday.

Sporting Lisbon vs Tottenham
Son had a brilliant 2021/22 season, scoring 23 goals and getting 7 assists in 35 games. However, he is yet to hit great form this season, with just 1 assist in the opening 6 games. However, if you wanted to fit in a Spurs attacker then he could be a great differential, as the forward slot has a lot of premium options that you may not want to miss out on.
As expected, Kane is predicted to score good points (7.7) this week, despite an away fixture for Spurs. Kane has an impressive 5 goals in 6 games. However, there are a lot of premium strikers who are in fine form, which makes it difficult to even squeeze Kane in over the likes of Mbappé, Neymar, Lewandowski, and Haaland.

UCL Fantasy MD2 Captaincy – Day Two: Wed, 14th September
Manchester City vs Borussia Dortmund
Haaland is in unstoppable form at the moment, with 10 goals and 1 assist in 6 Premier League games and 2 goals in Man City’s opening UCL game against Sevilla. This follows on from impeccable form in the Bundesliga, where he had 22 goals and 8 assists in 24 matches (21 starts). This week, he clashes with his former team in a home game where City will be the favourites. Dortmund have also just been beaten 3-0 by Leipzig in the Bundesliga, and, considering his current goal-scoring form, Haaland is definitely a top captaincy pick for MD2.
De Bruyne has always been a reliable FPL pick when he avoids rotation, and I think he is definitely a top pick for the limitless wildcard. Last season, he started 25 league games and featured in 30, getting 15 goals and 8 assists. Within the UCL, he scored 2 goals and had 3 assists. In 6 games (5 starts) so far in the Premier League, he has 1 goal and 4 assists, and, had 1 assist in Man City’s 4-0 win against Sevilla. Coupled with Haaland, he could provide big points in MD2. Despite the differential appeal, I would not personally risk betting against Man City’s talisman Haaland if you are opting for one of their assets as captain, as for him the goals just keep on coming. I also think the PSG attackers would be safer bets here.
There are plenty of exciting wingback options for MD2, and it is very likely that Cancelo will be in your teams, whether you play the limitless or not. In the Premier League last season, he scored 1 goal and had 7 assists in 36 games, and has been an FPL favourite for quite a while. In Man City’s 2021/22 UCL campaign, he managed 2 goals and 3 assists. With a brilliant 15 points last week – including a clean sheet and 2 assists – he is also predicted to be the highest scoring defender for this week, with 7.5 projected points. Cancelo may be on your mind as a differential captain. However, it would be risky considering their MD2 opponents, who comfortably beat Copenhagen 3-0 in MD1. Again there is the risk of going against Haaland, who is the best captaincy option from Man City right now.

Maccabi Haifa vs PSG
PSG’s front three – Mbappé, Neymar, and Messi – have started the season in brilliant form. In 7 games, PSG have scored 25 goals in Ligue 1.
Premium striker Mbappé will be the most popular PSG pick after scoring a brace against Juventus in MD1. In terms of projected points, he is second among all UCL Fantasy options for MD2 (9.7), with only Lewandowski beating him. In the 2021/22 campaign, Mbappé scored 6 goals and got 4 assists, with PSG being eliminated by winners Real Madrid in the round of 16, and in Ligue 1 he scored a whopping 28 goals and 17 assists in 35 matches played. So far this season, he has 7 goals in 6 league games, and will surely be a must-own if you are playing the Limitless chip in MD2. It would also be difficult to bet against him for captaincy.
His teammates are also predicted to score big this week. £10m Neymar has had a phenomenal start to the season, with 8 goals and 6 assists in 7 games, and he was the PSG attacker I opted for in my MD1 team. He came away with 1 assist in MD1 but no goals, but with PSG’s favourable MD2 fixture doubling up on their attack is definitely an option here. In the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season, Neymar scored 13 goals and bagged 6 assists in 22 matches played, but only managed 2 assists in the Champions League last year. In MD2, he is predicted to score 8.7 points.
Messi, at £10.5m, is cheaper than Mbappé but more expensive than Neymar. This season in Ligue 1, he has a fantastic 3 goals and 7 assists in 7 games, and he’s already looking like he’ll soon reach last season’s numbers of 6 goals and 14 assists if he keeps this form up. However, compared to Mbappé and Neymar’s goal-scoring form, I would think he is the third-best option among the PSG attack.
£6m Hakimi would form part of a great PSG triple-up. In the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season, he registered 4 goals and 6 assists in 32 matches (28 starts). So far this season, he is in good form, with 2 goals and 1 assist in 7 games, starting 6 of those. He also got an assist in PSG’s victory over Juventus last week. He is definitely a great MD2 pick, though going against the likes of Mbappé and Neymar would be daring.

Vinícius Júnior vs RB Leipzig (H)
Vinícius Júnior had a brilliant 2021/22 campaign. In La Liga, he scored 17 goals and registered 10 assists in 35 games (30 starts), and scored 4 goals and had 6 assists in Real Madrid’s road to winning the UCL. Now that he is classed as a midfielder, he also gets an extra point for scoring a goal compared to forwards, and will get an additional point for a clean sheet. Vinícius Júnior continues his brilliant form, with 3 goals and 1 assist in 4 La Liga games and a goal in their 3-0 win against Celtic to open the 2022/23 UCL campaign.
This makes him an ideal captaincy option for UCL Fantasy MD2, as the title defenders play Leipzig at home. Leipzig sit at 10th in the Bundesliga, having won 2, drawn 2, and lost 2. Real Madrid will definitely be the favourites here, which makes Vinícius Júnior a solid captaincy choice. As with some of the other differential options here, the risk with opting for him is that you could lose out on big points and do damage to your rank if one of the in-form forwards does haul.

My Plans For Limitless MD2
Here are 2 limitless drafts for MD2 that I am considering for my own team:
- I am leaning towards the first draft.
- I think Mané or Sané would be good captaincy shouts for Tuesday, but I am personally deciding between Salah and Dumfries.
- For Wednesday, I’m pretty certain that Mbappé will have the armband if my Tuesday captain has not scored good points.
