Top FPL Gameweek 33 Captain Picks Based on Analysis and Metrics

GW32 proved to be a very successful one for managers and our captaincy metric. The metrics had Kane and Son on top last week ahead of the likes of Bruno, Salah, KDB, and the Spurs duo didn’t disappoint with Son going on to complete a hattrick. But after a midweek filled with European games, we are nearing another FPL deadline, and captaincy in FPL Gameweek 33 seems to be a tricky one of whether backing a single gameweek option or a double gameweek option. Without further ado, let’s look at our FPL Gameweek 33 Captain Picks and Metrics.

Metrics record this season: 26/32 this season

FPL GW33 Captaincy poll ~ Wisdom Of the Crowd

[Total_Soft_Poll id=”45″]

For the first time in the history of the captaincy metrics a Leicester player, Maddison tops it fairly because of their double and also the recent form of Madders who scored again in the conference league semis against PSV yesterday. The Spurs duo of Kane and Son who are in red hot form come second and third in the poll in spite of the fact that they play only once in GW33. Salah comes fourth in the poll and is another single gameweek candidate playing at home to Manchester United. Bruno is fifth in the poll and has a decent double against Norwich(H) and Liverpool(A).

Note: Ronaldo is sixth in the poll but we still have mentioned where he would rank in the metrics for those managers considering captaining him in GW33.

Salah as usual tops the individual numbers over the last six games with 19 shots inside the box, seven chances created, 5 big chances, and an xG of 4.77. Spurs duo of Son and Kane are not far behind with both of them having more big chances(7) than Salah in the last six games, in terms of xG as well Kane(4.36) is very close to Salah(4.77) which tells how good Spurs have been under Conte in the last six games.

Bruno is fourth and has some decent numbers including an xG of 2.98 and has had five big chances too which are promising numbers. Maddison’s numbers are poor which is somewhat expected as he mostly converts low xG chances into goals and takes shots mostly from outside the box.

Note: Ronaldo would have had a player’s attack rank of 3, having had 19 shots inside the box, six big chances, and an xG of 3.73 in the last six games.

Underlying Numbers of the Candidate’s Teams

Underlying Numbers of the Candidate's Teams

It’s once again like last week a battle between Spurs and Liverpool for the team stats with Liverpool having more shots inside the box and xG whereas Spurs have had more big chances. Man United and Leicester are nowhere near to the numbers of Spurs and Liverpool which shows the stark difference in the form of the teams.

Note: Ronaldo would have had a Team’s attack rank of 4, the same as that of Bruno as they are from the same team.

Fixture Difficulty of the candidate team in FPL GW33

Fixture Difficulty of the candidate team in FPL GW33

In the Third Phase of the article, We use Drafthound’s odds for a Team scoring at least One goal in the Gameweek and the Odds of Scoring more than 2.5 goals in the Gameweek as a whole. You can check out the same as well for free on Drafthound along with fixture analysis, predicted analysis, and more.

Now here’s where the double gameweek boys come into play with both Bruno(Manchester United) and Maddison(Leicester) having superior numbers compared to the single gameweek options including the likes of Salah, Son, and Kane.

Note: Ronaldo would have had a Fixture difficulty rank of 1, the same as that of Bruno as they are from the same team.

Projections Rank of our FPL Gameweek 33 Captain Picks

Projections Rank of our FPL Gameweek 33 Captain Picks

In the Fourth Phase of the article, We have used the Anytime Returns and Projected Points Tools available at Fantasy Football Hub.

It’s the projections where we have a clear winner with Bruno Fernandes having an 80% chance of a return and a projected points score of 11.6. This could be majorly from the poor away form of Norwich.

Note: Ronaldo has an anytime returns percentage of 85% and a projected points score of 11.4. This means that Ronaldo will rank first in the anytime returns and second in the projected points and will be joint first with Bruno for Safety plus Explosion Rank.

Conclusion – Final Rank from our FPL Gameweek 33 Captaincy metric analysis

Final Rank from our FPL Gameweek 33 Captaincy metric analysis

In the Fifth and Final Phase of the article, I have aggregated the Ranks derived above to pull out the Cumulative Rank Factor (CRF). The Candidate having the lowest Cumulative Rank Factor is the most ideal Captaincy Option according to this metric.

Mo Salah tops the metrics thanks to a strong player and team attacking numbers plus Salah also has the best fixture and projections rank outside the double gameweek boys. The last time Salah played against Manchester United he bagged 24 points(3 goals plus an assist). Bruno is second with a CRF of 10, Son and Kane both are third with a CRF of 13, whereas Maddison is last with a CRF of 14.

Note: If you add Ronaldo as well and make the list into six players then Ronaldo would have finished with a CRF of 9, Salah on 10, Bruno on 11, Kane on 15, Son on 16, and Maddison on 18.
