Welcome to FPL GW33 Transfer Trends! This is a weekly series where we take a bit of time to analyze some of the major transfer trends on FPL prior to the deadline.
GW32 was the first gameweek in a long time without a double or a blank for any team. It was a gameweek that saw returns all around, particularly from Chelsea and Spurs assets.
This week, we can see the transfer trends show people buying players from Leicester, Tottenham, Brentford, and Newcastle. The top 5 transfers OUT come from Aston Villa, Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Watford.

FPL Transfers Gameweek 33 Deadline
Saturday 16th April 2022 at 10:00 AM BST
We will take a look at the players that managers are rushing to get in their teams, as well as the players managers are booting out. Then, we will dive into three main transfer combinations that could be decent moves to make ahead of the upcoming gameweek.
RECAP of GW32 TRANSFER TRENDS
Coutinho (2 points) to Maddison (6 points) ✅
Tierney (0 points) to Doherty (1 point) ❌
Coutinho (2 points) to Son (21 points) ✅ 🤯
2/3 transfer trends worked out, with a whopping massive haul for Son! We move onto GW33!
Top Transfers Ins and Outs Ahead of FPL GW33
Coutinho is the most transferred out player ahead of the deadline, with 270k managers not impressed with his 4th consecutive blank. Doherty’s injury prompts 142k managers to look for a replacement. In a similar dilemma, Tierney sees another 133k managers take him out of their teams.
Despite claiming an assist in GW32, 105k managers remove Salah from their teams. Watford’s Dennis makes the final spot, with 85k managers not happy with his recent performances.
On the flip side, James Maddison is the hottest property heading into GW33, with 185k eager to capitalise on Leicester’s favourable double fixtures. Son follows closely behind, with 158k managers impressed by his hat-trick against Aston Villa in GW32.
Brentford’s Ivan Toney sees 113k managers bring him in after his 12 point haul in GW32. Newcastle defender Fabian Schär is brought in by 101k managers ahead of Newcastle’s favourable double in GW33. Finally, Kulusevski’s goal and assist, collecting 12 points in GW32, has convinced 94k managers to bring him into their teams.
The 3 transfer combinations we will be focusing on are: Doherty to Schär, Raphinha to Maddison, and Dennis to Toney.
Top Three FPL GW33 Transfer Trends Combinations
FPL GW33 Transfer Combination 1:
Matt Doherty (£4.9) to Fabian Schär (£4.4)
Despite being pitched as a transfer trend for the previous edition, Doherty’s injury has now seen him possibly sidelined for the remainder of the season. A big blow for many managers who put their trust in the Spurs wingback. 34.6% of managers have already begun the search for a replacement, with Newcastle defender Fabian Schär leading the picks.
Newcastle enter GW33 with two of the best fixtures. Both home games against relatively easier opposition. Schär has returned in the last two games, with a goal and a clean sheet. Those who owned him in GWs 27 and 28 were gifted with two consecutive double digit hauls, where he scored a goal, an assist, and a clean sheet to claim those hauls.
In the last 6 gameweeks among all defenders, Schär is joint best for shots on target (5) and 2nd best for total shots, only behind Rüdiger. A heavily debated question is whether to go for Schär or fellow Newcastle defender Matt Targett.
I believe Targett is a great differential alongside Schär. Below, we run a comparison between the two defenders:
From this comparison, we can see that Targett outscores Schär in terms of creativity, whereas Schär has the better overall attacking stats. A primary factor for this is the fact that Targett has corner duties, which boosts his creative appeal. I would personally still prefer Schär due to his explosiveness and attacking threat.

Who do Newcastle face in GW33?
Newcastle play Leicester and Crystal Palace at home in GW33.
We compare the xGCs of Leicester and Crystal Palace for both home and away for this season:
Team | Home | Away |
Leicester | 1.83 | 1.89 |
Crystal Palace | 1.06 | 1.45 |
It is clear to see that both teams concede more in their away games. Leicester’s xGC in particular is rather high, as they remain relatively leaky in the defense. The Palace game will be the tougher of the two, but they are both favourable fixtures for Newcastle to target.
FPL GW33 Transfer Combination 2:
Raphinha (£6.5) to James Maddison (£7.0)
Joy for Raphinha owners as he finally registered his first double digit haul of the season! After so many occasions of registering a return but barely scraping 10 points, he has only gone and done it. With Leeds blanking in GW33, managers have looked to another midfield asset who looks to be a standout pick: James Maddison.
31.1% of managers have already made the swap from Raphinha to Maddison. Maddison registered another assist against Crystal Palace, rewarding managers who opted for him in GW32. This is his 3rd consecutive return in a row, blanking in only 2 of the last 7 games.
Among all Leicester players, no other player comes close for total shots, shots on target, xGI, key passes, big chances created, and xAssists. Given Leicester’s favourable double in GW33, Maddison is a safe pick from the Leicester selection.
Who do Leicester face in GW33?
Leicester play Newcastle and Everton away in GW33. In the last 6 gameweeks, Everton are 2nd worst for shots on target conceded (37), 2nd worst for big chances conceded (17), and 3rd worst for shots conceded (94). They’ve conceded 12 goals in that time, only keeping 2 clean sheets.
Newcastle, on the other hand, have conceded 9 goals, only keeping 2 clean sheets. Everton have an xGC of 1.74, and Newcastle have an xGC of 1.38. With Maddison’s 57% goal involvement, Leicester’s high chances of getting a goal in the double could mean Maddison is involved in some way or another.

FPL GW33 Transfer Combination 3:
Emmanuel Dennis (£5.9) to Ivan Toney (£6.9)
Dennis‘ 4th consecutive blank in a row has prompted 8.3% of managers to swap to Brentford forward Ivan Toney.
Toney has returned in 4 out of the last 5 games, scoring 6 goals, 2 assists, and 3 double digit hauls in that time. In Brentford’s fixture against West Ham in GW32, Toney scored a goal and an assist to take home a hefty 12 point haul.
Among all forwards in the last 6 gameweeks, Toney is best for shots in the box (16) and big chances (8), and is only behind Kane for total shots (18). He is joint first with Kane for xGI (1.2).
Brentford appear to have found a resurgence in form, especially with the introduction of Christian Eriksen. Toney has re-emerged as a crucial member of the Brentford attack. With a real lack of considerable forward options, Toney is a decent pick in the forward selection.
Who do Brentford face in GW33?
Brentford play Watford away in GW33. In the last 6 gameweeks, Watford are worst for headed attempts conceded (23), with an xGC of 1.54. They have conceded 13 goals in 6 games, only keeping 1 clean sheet.
Very clear to see that Watford are not the best defensively. Should be a good fixture for Toney and Brentford to capitalise on.
That has been 3 potential transfer combinations that FPL managers could consider prior to the Gameweek 33 deadline. Hope this blog provided a bit of insight on viable FPL moves you could take!
