FPL GW33 Saturday Fixtures Review

TOTTENHAM v BRIGHTON

Tottenham came into this game with 25 goals in the bag in the last 7 PL games and with a foot in the door to secure the 4th spot. As a home team shouldn’t, Spurs got off to a slow start.

Below is a depiction of the attacking threat of both teams.

(Spurs in green, Brighton in blue)

FIRST HALF

SECOND HALF

Instantly, you feel that the green team is the away team looking at the attacking threat Spurs created.

Was it the Saturday early kick-off curse? Mind you, this was only the second time Spurs have played a 12:30 Saturday game this season. The first one was a capitulation at Selhurst Park giving Patrick Vieira his 1st win as a Crystal Palace manager.

Spurs’ xG Shots = 0.54

1st half = 0.02

2nd half = 0.51

Brighton’s xG Shots = 0.83

1st half = 0.24

2nd half = 0.59

  • The Seagulls evidently looked confident in all facets of the game after their impressive win at the Emirates a few days back.
  • They had a total of 12 shots with 8 from inside the box
  • Lamptey – in his 16th start of the season – looked impressive by being a constant threat on the right flank
  • The only stat where Kane was at the top was penalty touches in the opposition box.
  • Otherwise, he had a game to forget with an xG of 0.02
  • Brighton had 21 touches vs Spurs’ 16
  • Trossard was involved in a scrappy goal but he showed the calmness in finishing the chance which the game was devoid of completely
  • Bergwijn had the best chance in a white shirt in the 91’ (coming on in 88’ for Son)
Image

Trossard’s Big Chance: 0.30 xG (Goal)

Bergwijn’s Big Chance: 0.32xG (missed)

  • Brighton continues to play more freely away from home this season as 65% of their goals have come on the road.

ANTONIO CONTE

‘Certainly not a good result for us and a lesson that we can learn today that there are games that if you’re not able to win, you’re not to lose’

MANCHESTER UNITED v NORWICH

Image
  • With just a solitary win in the last 5 PL games, Red Devils had lost a lot of ground on Arsenal & Spurs in the quest for the 4th spot
  • The game against Norwich – the worst defense in the league – couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time

Below is a depiction of the attacking threat of both teams.

FIRST HALF

SECOND HALF

The Canaries with relegation imminent with every passing GW gave a fascinating account of themselves by exploiting Man United’s defense which has kept just 2 clean sheets in the last 10 PL games.

United’s xG Shots = 1.42

1st half = 1.04

2nd half = 0.38

Norwich’s xG Shots = 1.57

1st half = 0.90

2nd half = 0.67

  • Pukki’s lead-up to the game was on an upward trajectory – 3 goals in the last 5. His 8 out of 9 goals before this game were against teams in the bottom half
  • The Norwegian didn’t disappoint his fans with 2 shots on target and scoring his 10th goal of the season
  • The home team dominated the attacking proceedings for the most part of the game with 49 penalty touches vs Norwich’s 23
  • Sancho was a constant threat for the visitors from the left side
  • Norwich did exploit the home team’s defensive frailties and the fact that Man United played without a CDM
  • Cristiano Ronaldo had scored 9/12 goals at OT before this game. Now, with his 2nd hat-trick of the season, 80% of the goals have come at home

RALF RANGNICK

We are probably the only team in the league who concedes goals like this. Defensively, I was not happy at all. The results elsewhere were good – but it doesn’t make sense to look to other results. We need to raise our game.”

SOUTHAMPTON v ARSENAL

Image

Both teams came into the game at the back of a few losses. Saints had a torrid time against Chelsea last week whereas Gunners were shocked by Brighton at home.

Below is a depiction of the attacking threat of both teams.

FIRST HALF

SECOND HALF

With Spurs losing their game against Brighton, this was a perfect opportunity for Arsenal to get ahead of their London arch-rivals. The Saints, apart from their last 3 home games, have been impressive at home, especially in the defensive department.

S’pton’s xG Shots = 1.21

1st Half = 1.08

2nd Half = 0.13

Arsenal’s xG Shots = 1.58

1st Half = 0.51

2nd Half = 1.07

Arsenal was all over the home team in the 2nd half with all their key players thick in action. Saka had the best chance among all when Forster made an outstanding save from point-blank range (xG = 0.35)

  • Elyounoussi’s best chance of the game came early on in 7’ wherein he was the beneficiary of great persistence shown by Broja in cutting into the 6-yard box

Arsenal have now kept just 3 clean sheets in the last 10 PL games and have scored only 4 goals in the last 6.

MIKEL ARTETA

“Forster was incredible, the saves that he made today. It was a defining moment. That’s why I say the box has decided the game today. You could see the game was one-way traffic.”

WATFORD v BRENTFORD

Image

Two teams coming into a game couldn’t have been in more contrasting forms. Brentford had 6 wins in their 1st 27 games and was on a run of 4 wins from their last 5 PL games (before this weekend). Watford on the other hand had accumulated just 4 points in the last 7 PL games.

Below is a depiction of the attacking threat of both teams.

(Watford in green, Brentford in blue)

FIRST HALF

SECOND HALF

Watford’s xG Shots = 1.55

1st Half = 0.46

2nd Half = 1.09

Brentford’s xG Shots = 1.77

1st Half = 0.91

2nd Half = 0.86

Brentford’s defenders – as has been witnessed time and time again – imposed themselves on this game. After Eric Dier (103 points), Jansson is on the verge of being the cheapest defender to hit the 100-point mark. He has 2G and 4A for the season and is now the 3rd highest point scorer for Brentford after Toney & Mbeumo.

  • Watford was far from being clinical in front of the goal. They had a total of 17 shots with 12 from inside the box
  • King and Louza’s big chances (missed) were both > 0.40 xG (both in the dying minutes of the game)

Brentford is back to the form they displayed in the 1st quarter of the season. In their 1st seven games, they had 3 wins (Arsenal, Wolves, and West Ham) and 1 loss. In their last 7 games, they have won 5 times (incl Chelsea & West Ham) with 2 losses.

ROY HODGSON

“We conceded a very poor goal and that was very disappointing considering how much we built up the game in the week with the players and how much we believed that they recognized that this game needed to be built up because it was one of the last chance games we’re going to have.”
