Analyzing The Season of The Current World Number 1 FPL Manager

The Norwegian Anders Dugstad (Oles Brummser) has had a remarkable FPL campaign and is currently occupying the number one position in the overall rankings with 2224 points. In this article, we will take a deeper look at how he has been able to reach such extraordinary highs this season and what are the key decisions behind his FPL success.

Previous Season FPL ranks

Before analyzing his current campaign it is worth mentioning how has Anders performed in the past and what are his best overall finishes. The Norwegian has more than a decade of FPL experience as he has been actively playing since the 2009/10 season. His best finish was in his 2nd season in 2010/11 when he finished inside the top 7k. He has also finished inside the top 100k on 3 other occasions – 2014/15 (52K), 2018/19 (74K), and 2019/20 (30K).

2021/22 FPL Season progression

Anders started the season strong with an overall rank of 317k in GW 1 and after 3 green arrows, he found himself in the top 36K before GW 5. Unfortunately for him, 3 red arrows followed which put him back in the 180K rank.

After a few disappointing gameweeks he had an extraordinary GW 9 where his team scored 151 points and with a GW rank of 39 in the world, he managed to jump from 180K to 1.6K. The Norwegian broke into the top 1K in GW 15 before quickly reaching the top 100 in GW 18 which he has not exited ever since.

He was in the top 10 in the world from GW 22 and only once exited the elite club just for one week when he dropped to number 12. After a successful bench boost in GW 29, he managed to become number 1 in the world.

Transfers Done So Far This Season

Anders has made 35 transfers in the 31 gameweeks so far and we can clearly see he does not have the most passive approach in relation to transfers that is often associated with the top players of the game. He has taken a total of 9 hits this season and notably 3 of them in the same Gameweek 29 (-12) when he played his bench boost.

On 4 of the 7 occasions when taking a hit, he got a green arrow. However, he has also rolled his free transfer 4 times during the season which has allowed him to make more considerable changes in the following gameweek.

A few of his most successful picks include getting Ronaldo in for his 13-pointer against Newcastle on his debut, Tierney for his 12-pointer in GW 16, Watkins for his 12-pointer in GW 17, Bowen for his 21-pointer in DGW 21, Fernandes for his 23-pointer in DGW 22, Salah for his 28-point DGW 26 score and Robertson for his 18-pointer in DGW 29.

He has also been able to avoid being punished by Salah as he transferred him out before his GW 19 blank and brought him back just before GW 26. During that time Salah scored only once and missed 2 games as he was on international duty. He has not relied on many differentials this season, although he has owned players like Jesus and Wilson for short periods.

Captaincy

Interestingly enough, Anders has experienced a total of 7 captain blanks at this point of the season (3 from Salah, 2 from Ronaldo, and 1 from Dennis and Foden each). He has not captained a defender at all this season. The most trusted man for his team’s armband has been Salah (captained 17 times), followed by Ronaldo (captained 4 times). He has also captained players like Bowen, Fernandes, Dennis, and Kane when they have a DGW.

Chip Strategy This Season

Anders has played almost all of his chips (TC, FH, BB, 2 WC) and has only one Free Hit remaining. The first wildcard he used was in GW 18 which has allowed him to soon break into the top 10 players in the world.

He triple captained Salah in DGW 26 from which he gained a staggering 84 points. His first Free Hit was deployed in GW 27 where he opted for 3 Burnley players with a mixture of expensive assets from Spurs and Man City.

He then proceeded to wildcard in GW 28 and surprisingly decided to bench boost in GW 29 while taking a -12 which presupposes that maybe he took the decision after wildcarding. He has navigated well through the blank gameweeks without using chips and has rather focused on exploiting the double gameweeks.

Favorite players Owned

Although Anders has made a lot of moves, there are a few players which have been an almost integral part of his team throughout the whole season. His top 7 favorite picks include Trent Alexander-Arnold (29 GWs), Sanchez (26 GWs) Salah (22GWs), Foster (20GWs), Jota (19 GWs), Foden (19 GWs) and Tierney (19 GWs).

Looking at the way the current number one in the world has performed, we can point out a few important principles he has stuck by which have put him in an incredible position just 8 gameweeks before the end of the season:

• A good start helps immensely since you do not need to use your first wildcard early if you have already set up your team correctly. A late first wildcard gives you a chance to plan while having a bigger statistical representation of the main trends and players in form.
• Staying within the template with 1 or 2 differentials in your team is way more than enough to rise through the ranks. As long as you have a good core of players in your team, you can allow yourself to experiment from time to time, but don’t go for low-owned players just for the sake of being different.
• Preparing early for blanks and doubles is crucial, however, it is easier to navigate through blanks with transfers. Doubles are the best moment to play your chips but you should plan accordingly and consider how does this affect your team in the long run.
• You should always captain the player who you think will score the most points without putting much emphasis on EO. In the long run, what matters most is whether your captain has ticked over and generally, the safest bet is the premium players.
• Transfers and hits should be looked at in isolation and should be targeting mid to long-term gain. Don’t be scared to pull the trigger if you find a good move.
