UCL Fantasy Position Wise Top Picks for Round of 16 | UCL Knockouts

Hi guys and welcome back to another huge edition of my UCL Fantasy round of 16 Top Pick articles. Here I share not only some of the top picks for the round ahead but also my very own journey to potential success. Weโ€™ll also cover some of the basics because with a change of round comes a change of some rules.

You can find the link to all our Champions League Fantasy blogs here. We have separate blogs for captaincy and Differentials do check it out on the link.

Firstly a reminder as to how my own journey is going.

UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 Review

Youโ€™ll see above that I had a successful matchday 6 which was much needed after an average matchday 5. Key players including captain Mbappe, Danjuma, and Bellingham (unfortunately failed to reach the last 16).

My rank increased to 349th in the world currently, which is something Iโ€™m very happy with and will look to push even higher. Follow me on Twitter ~ @FPLReaction

UCL Fantasy Round of 16 ~ The Basics

After a frantic UCL draw that had to be re-drawn due to technical issues we saw some exciting matchups, letโ€™s take a look at those before we progress:

  • Sporting CP v Man City
  • PSG v Real Madrid
  • Salzburg v Bayern
  • Inter v Liverpool
  • Villarreal v Juventus
  • Chelsea v Lille
  • Atletico v Man United
  • Benfica v Ajax

Players now have unlimited transfers to build their teams for the rounds ahead but be careful as there is only 3 free transfers between the legs and only 5 before the quarter-finals so itโ€™s important to build most of your team based on the best teams in the last 16 with the highest chance of going through.

We can also now own 4 players from each club in the last 16, which is very helpful when wanting to stock up on the stronger teams with the easier ties.

UCL Fantasy Round of 16 Top Picks

This is the part where I reel off my top picks for the round ahead using stats, motivational factors, club form, country form, heat maps, and more to really squeeze out the best assets in the pool of players we have to choose from.

Note: This article started getting written commencing the 1st February, 2022. Meaning that some stats and details will inevitably change but not so much that it removes the credibility of the picks. Injuries will also get monitored and updated using my Twitter account.

Letโ€™s dive in

UCL Fantasy Round of 16 Top Picks ~ Goalkeepers

Geronimo Rulli

UCL fantasy round of 16 Goal Keepers ~ Geronimo Rulli

Team: Villarreal

Price: 5 million

Ownership: 2%

A player I have regularly enlisted amongst my top picks for several reasons which weโ€™ll discuss below.

The form of Villarreal in terms of winning, losing or drawing wouldnโ€™t hugely be a factor usually but itโ€™s important because itโ€™s a big indicator in what we can expect from them against upcoming opponents Juventus.

7 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw for Villarreal in their last 10 matches in all competitions suggesting their in a really good run of form currently.

Defensively they can be leaky, in the same 10 match period as shown above Villarreal have only kept 3 clean sheets which isnโ€™t fantastic but the capability to keep clean sheets is there.

Villarreal come up against Juventus next who have struggled to return to the peak of the domestic league since Inter won it last season, this shows in their league position where they currently sit 5th.

In 3 of the 6 games Juventus played in their UCL campaign they scraped a 1-0 win, suggesting they can also struggle to score at times, favourable if your looking to buy into their opponents defensive assets.

Rulli, the Argentinian goalkeeper comes in at a nice 5 million price tag, which at this advanced stage of the tournament is basically a budget player. Price is something many players will be looking to keep low in this position with the range of attacking players coming in with great form but even greater price tags.

This season Rulli has managed 9 clean sheets in his 20 domestic matches for Villarreal, an impressive number regardless of price or team, especially when the domestic league is as competitive as it is above and below them.

Rulli plays before the other options detailed below which makes him a great candidate as your first playing goal keeper of the last 16, this means you can of course swap him out if he doesnโ€™t perform.

The Villarreal keeper offers a great clean sheet record domestically, a fantastic budget price and against an unpredictable opponent, for that reason Rulli makes the top picks for the matchday coming.

Edouard Mendy

UCL fantasy round of 16 Goal Keepers ~ Edouard Mendyย

Team: Chelsea

Price: 6.4 million

Ownership: 34%

Mendy and Chelsea play at the same time as Rulli and Villarreal meaning you can only have one of them in your team. Both offering different factors in why they could be a great pick, letโ€™s take a look into why Mendy could be a top pick for the last 16.

In terms of form Chelsea are still up there. 6 wins, 3 draws and only 1 loss in their last 10 matches in all competitions, the one loss being against Man City which was 1-0.

UCL form is as good if not better, 4 wins, 1 draw and a loss for Chelsea, showing a great run in Europe thus far.

Chelsea have usually been known for having one of the strongest defences around and that has amplified since Tuchels take over last season. Joint 3rd for clean sheets domestically this season with 10 so far. In the UCL 4 clean sheets in the 6 matches played, a fantastic defensive showing for the blues.

Although Chelsea have only kept 4 clean sheets in the last 10, which is still ok, theyโ€™ve only conceded 7 goals in that same time. It seems only a matter of time before they click defensively again and return to being a formidable unit at the back.

Along with that we have to take into account the opponent up next which is Lille. Arguably one of the weakest teams in the last 16 and a fantastic opponent for Chelsea to have.

In terms of form in the last 10 the French team have managed 6 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws in all competitions, not bad. However sitting 10th in the French domestic league reflects just how poor theyโ€™ve been this season in comparison to last.

Focusing more on Mendy, heโ€™s currently playing in the African Cup of nations, helping his national team Senegal to a semi final place, of course by the time you read this he could have helped them win it.

Winning FIFAโ€™s goalkeeper of the year Mendy has shown the world how good he really is, not only does he play behind a great defensive unit he himself also has fantastic reflexes reeling off some fantastic  saves last season to help Chelsea in becoming European champions.

6.4 million is pricey but Mendy offers safety, 6,6,6 were his last point returns in UCL fantasy, 3 clean sheets in 3 matches played, a fine example to reflect his capability. Heโ€™s also got a good chance of progressing quite far into the competition which is another huge factor in why he makes the top picks.

Expensive but plays in a great defensive team and plays against an out of sorts Lille, simply has to make the top picks list for the last 16.

Remko Pasveer

UCL fantasy round of 16 Goal Keepers ~ Remko Pasveer

Team: Ajax

Price: 5.1 million

Ownership: 3%

Once again another player who has been popular amongst my matchday top picks article is this man, Remko Pasveer.

Ajax have been somewhat a revelation in this champions league campaign due to how well their playing and how easily theyโ€™ve dispatched some good UCL teams in the group stages.

The Ajax form remains absolutely exceptional in general. In the last 10 matches played in all competitions theyโ€™ve won 9 and lost 1, incredible form.

Defensively their one of the best in Europe, a huge 7 clean sheets in their last 10 matches reflecting just how strong they can be at the back and 14 clean sheets in their last 20 matches if you go even further back.

Ajax play against Benfica in the last 16, a team like Lille regarded as being one of the weaker teams. Winning 6, losing 3 and drawing 1 Benfica have fallen far from their best as they sit a huge 12 points behind domestic league leaders Porto.

The lack of Benfica form lately mixed with the relentlessness of Ajax makes backing Ajax defensively a very clever idea.

Pasveer took the helms of the goalkeeper position when Stekelenburg took a long term injury to rule him out. This means that Pasveer is nailed between the sticks for Ajax.

At 5.1 million Pasveer offers a fantastic price which at this stage of the competition is a rarity, even more so because of the team he plays for and the opponent coming up.

We already discussed the Ajax defensive capabilities but what wasnโ€™t mentioned was the fact that Pasveer has managed an incredible 14 clean sheets in 17 domestic matches played, fantastic form.

Form and price suggest Pasveer is a must going into the last 16, playing on the last day of the matchday the Ajax keeper allows for a cheaper punt in the other goalkeeper slot, enabling money to the rest of your squad.

UCL Fantasy Round of 16 Top Picks ~ Defenders

Joao Cancelo

Joao Cancelo ~ UCL fantasy round of 16 Defenders ~ Top Picks

Team: Man City

Price: 6.5 million

Ownership: 26%

Firstly itโ€™s important to mention that Man City and Sporting are two lineups we actually get to see before the deadline meaning we can pick out players who are actually starting for our teams.

An asset that has been included in every single UCL top picks article I have written so far this campaign and weโ€™ll see why.

Man City have dominated English football for a few seasons now but have failed to clinch the UCL repeatedly so the champions league trophy will be well and truly on their minds especially after the 1-0 loss to Chelsea last season in the final. The motivation will be focused hugely on this tournament by the club with the premier league title already looking safely in the hands of Man City again.

With some of the best form in Europe amongst the top clubs with 8 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss in their last 10 matches in all competitions reflecting elite form.

Defensively this season domestically Man City are the best for clean sheets with 13, goals conceded with 14, goal attempts conceded in the box, shots conceded, headed attempts, big chances conceded and lots more, again another showing of just how good Man City are defensively.

Cancelo has been a stand out player in the premier league so far and has settled in even more than he did last season, signing a new contract this week extending his life at Man City will only give him motivation to help them clinch their first-ever UCL trophy.

3rd Amongst all players in Fantasy Premier League for points only behind Trent and Salah reflects just how good he can be as a fantasy football asset and weโ€™ll also see that in his incredible numbers this season so far.

At 6.5 million his price is hefty but with that you get premium returns and Cancelo shows that in every competition he plays in.

Covering the bare minimum of what you we expect in defenders is clean sheets, keeping a huge 12 in 22 matches played already shows fantastic value for money and thatโ€™s without looking at his attacking numbers.

Letโ€™s take a look at Canceloโ€™s heat map from the season so far:

Cancelo heatmap

Youโ€™ll not only see huge versatility in terms of positioning but a ridiculous comparison in time spent in his own half to time spent in the opponents. Combine that with the large positioning in and around the opponents box and we have massive potential for points returns.

Cancelo has managed more passes then anyone else in the premier league this season, the highest amongst all defenders for passes in the opponents half, 5 assists and 3rd for opposition box touches.

Focusing more on his UCL campaign so far is even more impressive. 41 points so far which is the most amongst all defenders in the game. Averaging a massive 8.2 points per match in the 5 that he played that included 2 goals, 3 assists and a player of the match.

A high price but premium returns means Cancelo has to be in for every team out there, defensively and offensively proven in terms of returns Cancelo offers multiple routes to points and with 3 double digit hauls out of the 5 already played so far the potential is huge.

Joshua Kimmich

Joshua Kimmich ~ UCL fantasy round of 16 defenders

Team: Bayern

Price: 6.8 million

Ownership: 16%

Another returnee in Kimmich enters the top picks for the matchday ahead. A player you would need a very good reason to leave out of your teams and youโ€™ll see why.

Bayern have been one of the best-run clubs in Europe in terms of financials, players in and players out. Their talent for turning free transfers into some of Europes best is well known and this contributes to an elite level club especially in the champions league. One of the favourites and with a favourable tie.

In the last 10 matches Bayern have reflected their elite status with a seriously impressive 9 wins and 1 loss, again an excellent showing of strength and another reason we should invest in the German giants.

The last time I wrote an article Bayerns form defensively was arguably below their very high standard but thatโ€™s improved as expected over the last several weeks with 5 clean sheets in the last 10. Potentially still lower than what many people would expect especially for price but as we know itโ€™s not all about clean sheets with my defender top picks.

Bayern have ruthlessly blown their way through defences in all competitions as of late. In the last 10 matches theyโ€™ve scored a whopping 29 goals, averaging 2.9 goals per match, one of the highest in Europe amongst the top teams.

Salzburg are up next for Bayern in the last 16 who although shouldnโ€™t be underestimated offensively, defensively they have fallen short of secure at the back with only 1 clean sheet in the group stage matches.

Itโ€™s really important to start with the fact that although Kimmich is categorised as a defender he actually plays in midfield, an out of position player which is something we all look for as fantasy football managers because it means he could have more potential than the rest of the defenders in the game.

Take a look at his heat map below

Kimmich heatmap

You can see already without knowing the above that Kimmich is indeed a central midfielder who both attacks and defends, youโ€™ll also see some great looking movement in the oppositions box which is even more exciting.

One example of just how much potential Kimmich has got is the last match out with Bayern which excluding the exceptional 10/10 rating he was awarded by Sofa score he made 2 assists even when the clean sheet wasnโ€™t there.

For more of a larger scale example of Kimmich this season domestically he played 14 matches, scored 3 goals, created 5 assists and kept 4 clean sheets accumulating to 12 returns in 14 games.

Expensive but deserved the German shows great attacking threat out of position and playing for one of the tournament favourites and for that reason has to be included in those drafts.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold ~ UCL fantasy round of 16 defenders

Team: Liverpool

Cost: 6.6 million

Ownership: 28%

Arguably the best in the world in his position and an easy option in your team, but why is he such a a good pick?

The Liverpool manager Klopp has implemented one of the most exciting if not the most attacking style of football in the world which makes them so exciting to watch which relies heavily upon his attacking defenders especially Trent.

Although falling just short with Chelsea behind Man City itโ€™s hasnโ€™t affected Liverpools attacking style at all, they continue to relentlessly attack any team they play against with no rest or thoughts about sitting back.

With 6 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss in the last 10 in all competitions the reds will be looking to turn more of those draws into wins and with the return of Salah and Mane from the African Cup of Nations I can only see their form improving.

Defensively only 3 clean sheets in 10 matches which would be disappointing usually if Trent wasnโ€™t Trent but also the underlying defensive stats suggest they should be due more clean sheets.

Liverpool domestically have the 2nd highest number of clean sheets with 11, 4th best for goals conceded, 2nd best for shots conceded in the box, 2nd best for shots on target conceded, 2nd best for headed attempts conceded, 2nd best for attempts from set plays conceded and much more. This shows a very strong defence which could mean the Liverpool defence could start to see more clean sheets soon.

More specifically on Trent, firstly letโ€™s take a look at Trentโ€™s heat map:

Trent heatmap

You may be surprised to see just how much space he utilises on the pitch especially in the opponents half, the most surprising thing is just how central he can come when most wing backs will attack primarily down the wing. Trent seems to dominate the whole right side of the pitch. Large positioning in the opponent box is also a clear showing just how much potential he has.

This season domestically Trent has played 20 matches, scored 2 goals , created 10 assists, and kept 9 clean sheets, accumulating to an amazing 21 returns in 20 matches played. A ridiculous amount and showing that heโ€™s worth his price tag if not worth much more than the game have priced him at.

Trents underlying stats furthermore back that his returns could be consistent for the rest of the season, amongst defenders in the premier league he is 1st for amount of crosses, 1st for successful crosses, 1st for chances created, 1st for big chances created and 2nd for attempts on goal.

Trent also takes most corners and free kicks which gives him another additional route to points.

Although at a premium price and even when the clean sheets arenโ€™t there Trent has shown he should be seen as an attacker and with that in mind the clean sheets are just a bonus. A game against Inter shouldnโ€™t put anyone off and for me has to be listed as a top pick for this matchday ahead.

Chelsea defence

Firstly Iโ€™m going offer my own opinions regarding the Chelsea backline as a fan. The situation at the back although looking confusing to other fans looks like it becoming much clearer to the Chelsea community, Iโ€™ll discuss this first with a quick overview.

The formation is important lately as Chelsea have been switching from a back 3 to back 4 which means Sarr and Alonso could be rotated more often. For me both are not options for that reason.

Christensen is a separate matter, heโ€™s rumoured to be wanting and pushing for a move away from Chelsea which will naturally cut his minutes dramatically in my opinion but also make other central defenders more reliable.

Reece James is a standout option if fit, but he isnโ€™t and at the time of writing this article is only in individual training, either way we could still see some rotation between Azpilicueta and James as James just simply wonโ€™t come back from a serious injury and play every match, this then also removes the right wing backs away as options.

This leaves several Central defenders who will likely play most matches for the reasons above but first weโ€™ll remind ourselves about the Chelsea form.

Weโ€™ve already seen that in the last 10 matches Chelsea have won 6, drawn 3 and lost 1 matches, showing ok form in all competitions.

In terms of defence Chelsea have usually been known to have one of the best around. 4 clean sheets in the last 10 matches isnโ€™t good enough and as usual itโ€™s only a matter of time until they improve.

A huge part of the way Chelsea win games is from defence , excluding the wing backs the Chelsea defenders have been known to be amongst the goals and that shows with the fact that Chelsea this season so far domestically are joint 3rd for goals direct from corners, joint 3rd for attempts from set plays, 3rd for attempts from corners and 3rd for corners in total taken. Another indication that buying into the Chelsea central defenders could be a wise move.

Upcoming opponents Lille as already mentioned are having a torrid season domestically. Sitting 11th in the season is a true reflection of just how poor theyโ€™ve been at least to their standards. Potentially the perfect opponent for the Chelsea backline.

Chelsea Defence UCL Fantasy Round of 16 Top Picks

Rudiger

Rudiger ~ UCL fantasy round of 16 defenders

Price: 5.9 million

Ownership: 19%

Rudiger remains one of Chelseaโ€™s most nailed defenders, his strength and pace are unmatched within the backline and his leadership mixed with potential to make match-saving tackles means heโ€™s the main man.

Rested in primarily the domestic cup games Rudiger has played the last 8/10 matches in all competitions. In the last 16 premier league matches Rudiger has played 90 minutes in all of them showing his importance to the team and manager.

Take a look at Rudigers heat map below:

Rudiger heatmap

At first glance if you didnโ€™t know his position you would think he was a LWB because of his movement during the season domestically. His marauding runs are something to look forward to as he can often go on incredible solo runs into the opponents box.

Rudiger often shoots on site and gets in the box for set pieces making him more offensive than most central defenders around. This adds to the attractiveness of buying into Ruidger.

In the UCL so far Rudiger played 5/6 matches, the 6th match he missed was deemed a rest by Tuchel, another showing of his reliability. During this same period The Chelsea man managed to return points in 4/5 of those matches, resulting a total of 33 points and averaging a goal of 6.6 points per match, a very reliable tally.

Overall a very good and reliable option in the Chelsea backline and for that reason has to make the top picks article for the last 16.

Chalobah

Cost: 4.5 million

Ownership: 0%

Chalobah has moved through the Chelsea ranks similar to the likes of Mason Mount and Reece James. The young talent has started a huge 11 matches for Chelsea domestically this season already.

The 22-year defender has hit consistent solid performances for Chelsea pushing his way into cementing a run of games several times in between injuries this season.

With rising stock and returning from injury Chalobah will be looking to get back into the first team and with Christensen wanting to leave and fans siding with the young Englishman we could really see Chalobah get another run of games together.

An example of the potential Chalobah has is when he made his first full debut against Italian giants Juventus in a must win. After a fantastic performance Chalobah came away with a clean sheet, a goal and player of the match resulting in a 15 point haul.

Monitoring Chalobahโ€™s game time will be key at the time of writing this. If heโ€™s showing signs of regaining his position and/or Tuchel starts reverting back to a back 3 then Chalobah could be a fantastic option.

Check out Chalobahโ€™s heat map below:

Chalobah heatmap

Youโ€™ll see that although looks like a RWB he isnโ€™t. He usually plays in the RCB position, similar to Rudiger in LWB Chalobah can venture heavily into the opponents half and tends to attack the opponents goal on set pieces and corners.

His price deserves a mention to say the least. At 4.5 million Chalobah has the potential to become one of the best in-game value assets out there, this then enables managers to fill the rest of their teams with those expensive options weโ€™ll all want for the last 16.

At a ridiculous price and potential to both score and keep a clean sheet we can only keep Chalobah in the fore front of our minds for the matchday ahead.

In regards to the double Chelsea defence it could be a great differential to own potentially both Rudiger and Chalobah at a combined cost of 10.4 million. With a nice opponent ahead and Tuchel wanting to tighten up at the back the Chelsea defensive assets are a must.

Mazraoui

Mazraoui ~ UCL fantasy round of 16 defenders

Team: Ajax

Cost: 5.1 million

Ownership: 6%

A player that has featured heavily in my top picks but seems to evade my own team often, that ends this matchday.

The Ajax form as discussed is one of the best in Europe amongst the elite teams and leagues. In the last 10 Ajax have managed an impressive 9 wins and only 1 loss in all competitions. We can further this form back even more with 20 games played 2 draws, 2 losses and a huge 16 wins.

Defensively though the form is still impressive from the Dutch team. In that same 10 matches played Ajax have kept 7 clean sheets, another example of the elite form Ajax have provided fans this season and another example of the value held in their players in terms of fantasy especially in this case.

Specifically in the champions league Ajax stayed relentless with 6 wins in 6 matches played including teams like Dortmund and Sporting, another big showing of form.

Up next for Ajax is Benfica. A team who have lost 4 of their last 10 matches and showing signs of instability in form. Ajax will hope to win both legs comfortably with a good chance of a clean sheet in both games.

The Moroccan 24 year old defender, although having a good chance of back to back clean sheets in the last 16 offers much more. The Ajax wingback didnโ€™t join up with his national side Morocco for the African Cup of Nations after a bust up with the coach, unfortunate for Morocco but fortunate for UCL fantasy managers because heโ€™ll likely be much fresher.

Letโ€™s take a look at Mazraouiโ€™s heat map:

Mazraoui heatmap

You can see amazingly exciting positioning from Mazraoui. Huge positioning in the opponents half is what we look for as managers but the large positioning in the opponents box is the real indicator that his attacking potential could be monstrous in terms of points.

This season domestically Mazraoui has played 16 games and has managed to return an impressive 5 goals, 2 assists and 9 clean sheets, accumulating to 16 returns in 16 matches played. This isnโ€™t just fantastic but usually reflects numbers of premium priced players, making Mazraoui an even better option.

In the UCL the consistency hasnโ€™t really changed for the young wing back. Playing 6 games Mazraoui managed a very good 30 points, averaging 5 points per match, a point per million in regards to his price.

At 5 million the attacking defender has a great fixture ahead, playing for an elite in form European team with a great opponent up next the Moroccan has to be considered in every team which is why he makes the top picks this match day ahead.

UCL Fantasy Round of 16 Top Midfielders

Man City Midfielders

Man City UCL fantasy round of 16 analysis

Weโ€™ll start this section by covering Manchester City, one of the reasons being the fact we get to see the lineups before we submit our teams which is huge and other reasons being because of how good Man City are.

Man City are currently leading the race to the premier league title in English football by quite the distance, ahead of teams like Liverpool and Chelsea.

As discussed the motivation to win the UCL is there for both club and manager after last yearโ€™s disappointing loss in the final to Chelsea. Man City will be looking to finish the job this campaign and they look hungry for it.

In the last 10 Man City have won 8, drawn 1 and lost 1. An impressive run of short term form in all competitions which extended to 20 matches would be 16 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw, which again shows top levels of form.

Offensively Man City are also one of the best. 28 goals scored in the last 10 matches, averaging 2.8 goals per game, one of the best in Europe and a big reason in why weโ€™re looking at Man City.

The form and goals remained to a high level in the blues European campaign so far. After 6 matches played, with 4 wins and 2 losses Man City also managed to score 18 goals. Another average of 3 goals scored per match showing consistency in different competitions.

Man City have Sporting ahead in the last 16 who have conceded 11 goals in their last 10 matches in all competitions, 1.1 goals conceded per match on average which isnโ€™t bad but when taking into account their 12 goals conceded in the 6 UCL games theyโ€™ve played so far they look much weaker and look a team to target.

For the reasons above itโ€™s only right we look at the best options for Man City so letโ€™s take a look at a couple.

Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez ~ top midfielders picks for UCL fantasy round of 16

Cost: 9.4 million

Ownership: 8%

Mahrez has been rotated as much as most of the Man City players in the past but as youโ€™ll see is highly thought of as one of Pep Guardiolaโ€™s key UCL players, which makes him hugely attractive as an option for us UCL managers.

Before Mahrez made the big move from Leicester to Man City in 2018 he managed 12 goals and 10 assists in 36 premier league matches, an incredible pair of stats but showing how truly balanced he is as a fantasy asset in terms of both scoring and creating, something rare that fantasy managers look for, multiple routes to points.

Mahrez continued his impressive form after moving to Man City with both goals and assists every season, including in the UCL campaigns over the years. Letโ€™s take a look at some of those numbers:

  • -18/19- Played 6, scored 1 goal, assisted 4, with 5 goal contributions in 6 matches.
  • -19/20- Played 7, scored 1 goal, assisted 4, with 5 goal contributions in 7 matches.
  • -20/21- Played 12, scored 4, assisted 2, with 6 goal contributions in 12 matches.

This campaign Mahrez seems to have found more clinical scoring form after playing 6 games and scoring 5 goals. This has notched him a a total of 40 points in UCL Fantasy , averaging an impressive 6.6 points per game , a return in every match.

Take a look at Mahrezโ€™s heat map:

As you can see Mahrez sits in that very forward right hand side role , similar to Salah you could argue heโ€™s playing out of position in comparison to his in-game position. With massive positioning in the oppositions box he is a constant threat on goal.

Mahrez is also the designated penalty taker for Man City when on the pitch which bolsters his stock even more.

Not only is the Algerian at a fantastic price in contrast to other premium players and arguably as good but heโ€™s also a huge captaincy option for the first matchday as itโ€™s the first UCL game of the last 16.

If we see that Mahrez is starting when we see the lineups before the deadline he must be considered, his UCL form and reliability mixed with his price means heโ€™s practically a premium asset but with a mid ranged price, underpriced in my opinion. A great pick for the last 16.

Phil Foden

Foden ~ top midfielders picks for UCL fantasy round of 16

Cost: 8.2 million

Ownership: 6%

For years fantasy football players around the world have been waiting for the day Foden gets a run into the first team because of how good he looks and that transition season finally feels like itโ€™s arrived.

The 21-year old seems to have been around forever, in a good way. The England international has excited fans around the world with his talent and we as fantasy managers are waiting for that explosion of points returns and goal contributions we know heโ€™s capable of.

An example of the transition into the first team as mentioned above is that Foden only started 17 premier league matches last season and already heโ€™s locked in 12 starts with plenty of the season remaining.

His heat map below is also really convincing:

You can see that Foden plays a far left advanced position for Man City which again similar to Mahrez could represent a forward role rather than the in-game midfielder category heโ€™s been given. Huge positioning in the box also similar to that of Mahrez shows just how attacking he is and highlights his attacking potential even more.

Letโ€™s take a look at his numbers from the Premier League bearing in mind he was 17 years old at the start of these campaigns:

  • 17/18: Played 5 matches and assisted 1 goal.
  • 18/19: Played 13 matches and scored 1 goal.
  • 19/20: Played 23 matches, scored 5 goals and assisted 2.
  • 20/21: Played 28 matches, scored 9 goals and assisted 5.

This season so far Foden has played 15 matches, scored 5 goals and assisted another 3.

Itโ€™s important we look at these numbers in a progressive way. Both the number of starts and goal contributions have increased through the years and at still only 21 years old thereโ€™s even more potential to still pull out of him.

His UCL stats are also worth taking into account too:

  • 18/19: Played 4 matches and scored 1 goal.
  • 19/20: Played 5 matches, scored 2 goals and assisted a further 2.
  • 20/21: Played 13 matches, scored 3 goals and assisted another 3.

This season Foden has played 5 matches in the UCL, scored 1 and assisted 1.

Another set of stats that again show growth in likeliness of playing, number of games played and goal contributions.

Foden will be looking to prove a point to manager Pep after being rumoured to have let him down with his behaviour off the pitch. Foden only knows too well the damage heโ€™s done and that will have to be repaired through his behaviour off the pitch but more importantly his performances on the pitch.

At a great mid price Foden has the hunger and motivation to really perform if starting in the last 16.

Leroy Sane

Leroy Sane ~ UCL fantasy round of 16 ~ Top Picks

Team: Bayern

Cost: 9.4 million

Ownership: 22%

Another return for one of the most featured players in my articles for UCL Fantasy. Go without Sane at your peril, youโ€™ll see why.

Bayern are well known to be a constant favourite for the champions league trophy every year and their form has only justified that this season as they currently sit 6 points clear in the German domestic league.

In terms of form Bayern have it. In their last 10 matches the German giants have won 9 and only lost 1, a huge showing of strength in all competitions.

In the same period as above Bayern have managed to score a whopping 29 goals, one of the highest in Europe amongst the top teams with an average of 2.9 goals scored per game which is a fantastic amount when looking for attacks to buy into.

Next up in the last 16 is Salzburg, the champions league newcomers have took the champions league by storm in that they have performed much better going forward than they were expected to. Unfortunately the same canโ€™t be said defensively as theyโ€™ve only kept one clean sheet in their current campaign, a great indicator that Bayern could score plenty here.

Many will remember Sane from his career at Man City that lasted a few seasons, some would think he wasnโ€™t hitting the numbers but take a look:

  • -Season 16/17 : Played 26 matches, scored 5 and assisted 3 goals.
  • -Season 17/18: Played 32, scored 10 goals and assisted 15.
  • -Season 18/19: Played 31, scored 10 goals and assisted 10.

Not only plenty of goal contributions but early signs of a fantastic player that could both create plenty of goals and score plenty of goals.

After signing for Bayern Sane then had to find his feet in the German league once again. After playing 32 matches Sane scored 6 goals and created a further 9, arguably a slow start for the German.

This season domestically Sane has really found stability in the German first team. Playing 19 matches, scoring 6 goals , creating 7 assists , accumulating to 13 attacking returns in 19 played. A great start to the season.

Take a look at his heat map:

Sane heatmap

Youโ€™ll see huge attacking potential with heavy positioning in the far left forward role and lots of positioning in the opponents box.

Even more impressive is that of his UCL form, playing 6 matches Sane has managed an eye watering 5 goals and 4 assists, combined with his domestic stats totals 25 matches played , scoring 11 goals and assisting another 11, an incredible balance of both creating assists and scoring goals showing a truly brilliant fantasy asset with 22 goal contributions in 25 matches played in both competitions.

With all of that in mind Sane is currently the highest scoring player in the entire UCL fantasy game with a whopping 65 points and averaging 10.8 points per match, incredible.

In one of the best attacking teams in Europe and showing better attacking form than any other player in the entire UCL campaign Sane becomes not just a top pick but an absolute must for every player out there, do not leave him out.

Mo Salah

Mo Salahย ~ UCL fantasy round of 16 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Team: Liverpool

Cost: 10.9 million

Ownership: 38%

One of the most in form players in the world returns once again to an edition of โ€˜Top Picksโ€™. The Egyptian hasnโ€™t let off in terms of form so letโ€™s see why heโ€™s a must have for the last 16.

His ownership alone stands at a huge 38% and we all know too well how going against one of the most highly owners players in the game can really damage our ranks, ownership alone should be a huge factor.

Liverpool remain dominant against most opponents in any given game due to their sheer speed on transition from Defence to attack. The high press has ravaged opponents through the season seeing plenty of goals.

In regards to from Liverpool, 6 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss. Not hugely impressive for a team like Liverpool but in the harsh elements of the Premier League many would see that as great form.

22 goals scored in the same 10 matches as above shows great scoring form for the reds in all competitions, 2.2 goals scored per match on average , enough for anyone to want to invest.

The Liverpool UCL form is also interesting. Drawing teams like Porto, Milan and Atletico Madrid Liverpool really had a job on their hands, but with 6 incredible wins out of 6 and considering the level of their opponents they really did show the world class levels they have in their team.

In that same period above Liverpool also managed to score a huge 17 goals, against a high level of opponent in every game and with a 2.8 goals scored per match average the reds seem relentless offensively.

A game up against Inter next up, a top level opponent and the league leaders in the Italian domestic league represents a challenge but if the group stage was anything to go by then not being put off by this fixture is key.

Salah this season is a different breed of player in terms of output, currently the highest points scorer in the whole Fantasy Premier League game leading 2nd place Trent his team mate by a huge 33 points.

His heat map below:

Mo Salah heatmap

You can see the incredible darker red parts of movement in the oppositions box, basically a striker, the Egyptian in-game midfielder is literally playing as advanced as most forwards giving him the playing out of position affect.

This season domestically Salah has lit up the Premier League. 20 matches played so far, scoring 16 goals and creating 9 assists, accumulating to 25 goal contributions in 20 matches which is absolutely incredible form.

In the UCL Salah continued that fantastic form with 7 goals in the 6 matches he played during the group stages this season. This resulted in an impressive 52 points returned in UCL fantasy, 8.6 points returned on average per match with double digit hauls of 16 and 13 along the way.

Salah also takes all of the penalties which is a huge bonus to the goal contribution machine.

The premium man looks a must for last 16 teams ahead, a great captaincy option on any given week, playing for an offensively rampant team with a high scoring average he has to make the top picks this matchday.

Arnaut Danjuma

Arnaut Danjumaย ~ UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Team: Villarreal

Cost: 6.8 million

Ownership: 3%

Firstly letโ€™s mention the fact that Danjuna has been out of action for 8 weeks plus now with an injury so weโ€™re all aware. I am currently heavily monitoring the situation and found out that he was in full training this week and is also indicated to be starting for Villarreal against Real Betis in the league coming up.

Secondly his ownership is 3% which is quite shocking considering his form and price. He offers a real chance of climbing the ranks even amongst the top fantasy managers it seems.

His price is also a very large factor in why Danjuma is so attractive as an asset. Our budget has naturally increased to make a better team more affordable but still at this enabling price managers can make even bigger upgrades within their teams, for me one of the best assets in the game.

Villarreal have had a bumpy ride in the group stages. Drawing Man United, Atalanta and Young Boys the Spanish team have done well to escape the group.

Currently standing 8th in the Spanish league but their form in all competitions in the last 10 is pretty good, with 7 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw the form could be viewed as very good.

The goals have also been flowing for Villarreal, in the same 10 match period they have managed to score an incredible 31 goals in all competitions, interestingly this is one of the highest in Europe currently amongst all of the top teams and leagues. An amazing achievement in terms of scoring form and one we must not ignore.

In the UCL theyโ€™ve also scored 12 goals in the 6 matches played so far, averaging 2 goals per game and reinforcing the fact that their there to challenge and score goals.

Juventus are the opponents ahead for Villarreal. 6 wins in the last 10 matches for the Italians which isnโ€™t fantastic and shows thereโ€™s still some improving to do to reach the heights they once hit and thatโ€™s domestically. A perfect opportunity for Villarreal to take hold of.

Danjuma has been a regular in my top pick articles for lots of reasons and I feel like every matchday I write these articles thereโ€™s only more reasons to have him in our teams and not less like most assets.

Take a look at Danjumaโ€™s heat map this season:

Danjuma Heatmap

An amazingly positive attacking heat map, not only does Danjuma appear to play as a left sided forward but his positioning is ridiculously impressive. Large red areas of his movement suggests Danjuma is constantly looking to run into the box to assist or score goals, this type of heat map is very similar to that of Salahโ€™s. Huge potential for attacking returns.

Domestically Arnaut has managed 12 matches so far this season scoring 5 goals and creating 2 assists, 7 goal contributions in 12 matches, great for his price.

His form has continued and even improved in the UCL , playing 6 matches, scoring 4 goals and creating 1 assist with 5 attacking returns in 6 games shows just how good he can be and that appears to be better in the champions league.

In terms of points Danjuma has collected a fantastic 44 points beating dozens of assets priced higher than him with an average of 7.3 points per game played in his champions league campaign. An average thatโ€™s truly hard to not buy into especially with his price tag.

The Dutch international offers better value for money than most assets in the game, even if you didnโ€™t need to come down to his price why wouldnโ€™t you? His returns and UCL form reflect that of a premium asset in the game and with an inconsistent opponent up next combined with the Villarreal scoring form you could be missing out on a big opportunity.

Mason Mount

Mount

Team: Chelsea

Cost: 7.4 million

Ownership: 7%

Featuring several times now Mason Mount comes into the fold again for the last 16 ahead.

Last seasons European Champions will be looking to defend their champions league trophy for the first time ever this season with Tuchel the Chelsea manager seemingly far better in knockout tournaments.

The Chelsea form has been questionable this season which is a little surprising as they sit 3rd in the league just behind Liverpool and have made it to the last season in the UCL, with the premier league looking to be out of reach for Tuchels men the motivation is there for Chelsea to get any silver ware they can get their hands on.

In the last 10 matches in all competitions Chelsea have had 6 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss. This form represents some consistency but with the strength of the premier league form this can be seen as good form.

19 goals scored in the same period as above is also ok, averaging 1.9 goals per game when supposedly struggling to score goals Iโ€™d say is pretty good, and with the blues likely to improve with key players returning it could be a mistake to not buy into the Chelsea attack.

In the current UCL campaign for the champions they managed 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss, a decent showing of European form. In this same period Chelsea also scored 13 goals, 2.1 goals scored per match which is above their goals scored average in all competitions.

Weโ€™ve already seen that Lille , Chelseaโ€™s last 16 opponents sit mid table domestically because of inconsistency. 6 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws isnโ€™t far off the Chelsea form in all competitions but defensively Lille have conceded 12 goals in the Last 10 matches with only 1 clean sheet in that whole period of matches, 1.2 goals conceded per match on average, a great opportunity for a Chelsea offensively.

The 23 year old has become Chelseaโ€™s main creative and attacking source over the past couple of seasons, a key player under both Lampard and Tuchel over the last year especially in securing the champions league title last season with his fantastic through ball to Havertz to clinch the winner.

Last season Mount secured a first team place under ex manager Frank Lampard, this season under Tuchel that reliability of starts remains as strong. 9 starts in the last 10 premier league matches for Mount thus reflecting the reliability of starts and showing how important he is for Chelsea.

Check out mounts heat map below

Youโ€™ll see that although versatile which is a fantastic trait in terms of being able to play both sides of the attack , preventing a higher probability of rotation and early subbing, Mount predominantly plays on the right side of the attack. Youโ€™ll also see huge darker red positioning in the oppositions box which is what we want as UCL fantasy managers and exactly what we look for.

This season Mason has played 21 matches for Chelsea domestically, scoring 7 goals and creating 6 assists, 13 goal contributions in total. What this shows is another thing we look for as fantasy managers and thatโ€™s already been mentioned in some of our other assets, being the ability to be able to both create and score goals, a great balance and providing himself with more routes to points.

The young Englishman also takes some corners and free kicks for Chelsea, and even more promising is that heโ€™s also stepped up to take penalties when team mate Jorginho isnโ€™t on the pitch, this can happen quite often considering Tuchel also has Kovacic and Kante, 2 more world class central midfielders to try to fit in.

Taking into account both the opponent ahead and all of the other factors discussed Mason Mount makes the top picks for the last 16 round ahead.

UCL Fantasy Round of 16 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappeย ~ Top forward picks for UCL fantasy round of 16

Team: PSG

Cost: 10.9 million

Ownership: 21%

I can say now that he will be massively overlooked by the top UCL fantasy managers and mainly owned by the casual players, the top managers will be clever to seriously consider Mbappe and weโ€™ll see why.

Mbappe currently is viewed by many as one of the best players in the world and rightly so, his goals and basic stats are absolute incredible which weโ€™ll discuss.

PSG have pumped money continuously into their squad over the years and although dominated domestically like Man City theyโ€™ve failed to capture the UCL trophy. After constant heart break the motivation will be rife throughout the squad to win this finally and go down into PSG history books.

6 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss in the last 10 matches for PSG in all competitions showing good form but still room for improvement overall. The French Giants are already a huge 10 points clear in the domestic league showing a astronomical difference in quality compared to the rest of the teams in the league, this has been a theme over the last few years other than the odd one or two times.

In terms of goals PSG managed 22 goals during the same period as above, which is impressive, averaging 2.2 goals scored per match in all competitions, stats that make you want to buy into the attack.

In the UCL group stages they drew Man City, Leipzig and Club Brugge, arguably an ok group other than being up against Man City. PSG survived and came 2nd just behind Man City, winning 3, drawing 2 and losing one against the English league leaders.

Scoring 13 goals over the 6 matches played PSG averaged 2.1 goals scored per match during the champions league group stages, 0.1 goals short of their recent 10 match form average. The closeness of both their recent average and UCL average is a huge positive as it shows consistency in terms of goals scored.

The reason so many elite UCL fantasy managers will be put off Mbappe is both price and opponent. Up next PSG face Real Madrid, an obviously tough opponent who are rumoured to have already signed Mbappe for the summer however Real Madrid themselves have also shown inconsistent form lately. 6 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses in the last 10 matches in all competitions for Real Madrid, conceding 10 goals in that same period, averaging 1 goal conceded per match.

The 23 years old French man seems like heโ€™s been around forever but at still such a young age will want reach for the stars by winning the champions league and further his ambitions of winning the Ballon Dโ€™or.

Firstly letโ€™s just take a look at his last few seasons in numbers domestically:

Season 17/18- Played 28 matches, scored 13 goals, assisted 8, accumulating to 21 goal contributions.

Season 18/19- Played 29 matches, scored 33 goals, assisted 7, accumulating to 40 goal contributions.

Season 19/20- Played 20 matches, scored 18 goals, assisted 5, accumulating to 23 goal contributions.

Season 20/21- Played 31 matches, scored 27 goals, assisted 7, accumulating to 34 goal contributions.

Truly amazing stats, to create more goal contributions than matches played shows true football class and extreme levels of hunger to be the best. Those crazy numbers have continued this season too with having played 20 matches, scoring 10 and assisting 9, accumulating to 19 goal contributions in 20 played, incredible numbers.

Mbappeโ€™s UCL campaign has also been a massive success in terms of output. After 6 matches played the talent managed 4 goals scored and 4 assists created, 8 goal contributions in 6 matches again reflects just how good of a player and asset Mbappe could be for us. Whatโ€™s very important to highlight is that Mbappe created a goal in each of his matches against England super team Man City who have arguably one of the best defences around. Another example that coming up against Real Madrid shouldnโ€™t deter anyone from bringing in the super star.

Pricey but world class Mbappe will want to leave on a high if the sources of his departure are true he will relish at the chance to score against the team he could be joining in the summer. Regardless of that Mbappe has shown premium levels of goal contributions consistently over the years and this season, enough for him to make the top picks for the last 16.

Lewandowski

Lewandoski ~ UCL fantasy round of 16 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Team: Bayern

Cost: 12 million

Ownership: 45%

Similar to teammate Sane Lewandowski has made every single top pick article I have written. The Polish goal scorer continues to show himself as one of the best forwards in the world, if not best.

His ownership is not a surprise, in fact itโ€™s a factor as to why UCL fantasy managers should own him because any returns from him can send you sinking in terms of rank. Heโ€™s also highly owned for a reason.

Weโ€™ve discussed the Bayern form over the last 10 but as a reminder theyโ€™ve won 9 matches and only lost 1, amazing form and one of the best in Europe.

In the same 10 matches period as above Bayern have managed a huge 30 goals, averaging 3 goals scored per match , which again similar to form could be one of the best if not the best in Europe amongst the top teams and leagues. Having the front man to this kind of attack is an absolute necessity.

The superb form continued in the group stages for Bayern after winning all 6 matches from 6 and scoring an incredible 22 goals which averages a total of 3.6 goals scored per match, absolutely ludicrous stats, a huge reason Bayern are both one of the favourites to win the title and the best attack to buy into.

With a game up next against Salzburg Bayern will look to continue their relentless goal scoring form afternoon their opponents only kept 1 clean sheet in the group stages.

At 33 years old Lewandowski is currently in his 8th season at Bayern so letโ€™s take a look at his stats for those seasons domestically:

  • -Season 14/15: Played 31 matches and scored 17 goals.
  • -Season 15/16: Played 32 matches, scored 30 goals and created 2 assists, 32 goal contributions.
  • -Season 16/17: Played 33 matches, scored 30 goals and created 5 assists, 35 goal contributions.
  • -Season 17/18: Played 30 matches, scored 29 goals and created 2 assists, 31 goal contributions.
  • -Season 18/19: Played 33 matches, scored 22 goals and created 7 assists, 29 goal contributions.
  • -Season 19/20: Played 31 matches, scored 34 goals and created 4 assists, 38 goal contributions.
  • -Season 20/21: Played 29 matches, scored 41 goals and created 7 assists, 48 goal contributions.

Youโ€™ll see not only an incredible career of goals and some assists but a progression of stats, an increase of goals and assists with age which suggests Lewandowski could be playing in his prime. This season that shows once again after playing 21 games so far, scoring 24 goals and creating 1 assist.

An absolutely incredible goal scoring career domestically and thatโ€™s only backed up by his UCL records too, this campaign Lewandowski has played 5 group stage matches, scored 9 and assisted 2 more, with 11 goal contributions Lewandowski nearly averages 2 attacking returns per match which makes him not just an essential pick in UCL fantasy but the main captaincy choice until the star man exits the tournament.

He is a must own, do not risk the last 16 without this man in your team.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo ~ UCL fantasy round of 16 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Team: Manchester United

Cost: 11.4 million

Ownership: 42%

An interesting pick for me because heโ€™s a player I havenโ€™t included in my top picks that much, usually because I feel there is better options in the game. Itโ€™s about time I gave the respect to Ronaldo that he deserves for the last 16.

We can talk about the negatives because there is genuine reasons why Iโ€™ve left him out of my UCL content in the past, Man United are inconsistent or Ronaldo isnโ€™t playing that well in the Premier League but ignoring his Champions league form has been at my Peril.

Itโ€™s important that we recognise his ownership because itโ€™s at a point where by if he returns points he will absolutely kill a rank, you can argue other players returning will balance that out but itโ€™s a fact, when he scores your rank will sink and it may not always rise back up. Ownership is a massive part of fantasy football and we need to factor that in.

In the UCL this campaign Man United won 3, drew 2 and lost 1, which isnโ€™t too bad considering they drew Young Boys, Atalanta and Villarreal who are all very free scoring in front of goal.

Man United managed 11 goals in the 6 group stage matches this season, averaging 1.8 goals scored per match, which isnโ€™t bad either.

Atletico Madrid lay ahead for Man U in the last 16 who are in a heap of trouble in terms of current form. In the last 10 matches they have won 3, drawn 1 and lost a huge 6 matches in all competitions, a big indicator that it could be the right time to play against Atletico Madrid.

In the same 10 match period as above Atletico have also conceded 18 goals, 1.8 goals conceded per match on average and when combined with Man Unitedโ€™s 1.8 goals scored per game this could scream potential for the reds scoring some goals.

Fantasy Premier League players like myself could dwell on Ronaldos poorish domestic season for Man United instead of focusing on his UCL record, letโ€™s remind ourself how good Ronaldo really is in the UCL, amonsgt breaking most of the scoring records heโ€™s recorded the following:

  • -13/14 Season- Played 11 matches and scoring 17 goals.
  • -14/15 Season- Played 12 matches and scored 10 goals.
  • -15/16 Season- Played 12 matches, scored 16 goals and created 4 assists.
  • -16/17 Season- Played 13 matches, scored 12 goals and created 5 assists.
  • -17-18 Season- Played 13 matches, scored 15 goals and created 3 assists.
  • -18/19 Season- Played 9 matches, scored 6 and created 2 assists.
  • -19/20 Season- Played 8 matches and scored 4 goals.
  • -20/21 Season- Played 6 matches, scored 4 goals and created 2 assists.

Some of the best numbers in the history of the competition and thatโ€™s only continued this season with Man United in the UCL. 6 matches played, scoring 4 goals and creating 2 assists means Ronaldo has averaged an attacking return in every match heโ€™s played, amazing form.

Taking into account both his ownership, opponent and UCL form Ronaldo simply has to be considered in the last 16.

Dusan Vlahovic

Dusan Vlahovic UCL fantasy round of 16 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Team: Juventus

Cost: 9.5 million

Ownership: 0%

The 22 year old Serbian, a brand new addition to the champions league game fresh after his move huge move from Fiorentina to Juventus joins the article for the first time.

Fantastically priced at a mere 9.5 million has got a lot of UCL fantasy players excited, but is this just a new signing and are we just being blinded by the excitement? Letโ€™s take a look.

Juventus has had a tough period this season although still managing to stay amongst the top 4 in the domestic league. Losing Lukaku has took a heavy toll on the forward line whilst also losing their star man Chiesa through long term injury. The signing of Vlahovic gives hope that Juventus can cut the points gap in Serie A.

In the last 10 matches in all competitions Juventus have won 6, drawn 3 and lost 1, not bad form at all.

In the same 10 match period the Italians have scored 19 goals, 1.9 goals on average per match during that time which is pretty good, itโ€™s important also to mention that in the 10 matches played before that Juventus had only managed 14 goals, a 1.4 goals scored average, showing improvements offensively.

Focusing more on their UCL campaign so far this season after 6 matches Juventus managed to clinch the group and win it ahead of European champions Chelsea winning an impressive 5 matches and losing just 1, showing their UCL form is very strong.

Villarreal lay ahead for Juventus who although are enjoying a good run of form their are still question marks defensively. 9 goals conceded in their last 10 matches isnโ€™t bad at all but when factoring that they conceded 9 goals in 6 matches played combined with the fact they also conceded 2 goals in 4 of the same 6 matches shows that when they concede they can concede plenty.

Vlahovic has burst onto the scene over the last couple of seasons and seemingly out of nowhere. The Serbian debuted on the international stage in 2020 for national side scoring 7 goals in the 14 so far, impressive for the 22 year old just starting out.

In terms of domestic form last season for Fiorentina Vlahovic played 37 matches, scoring 21 goals and assisting another 3, 24 goal contributions in 37 matches in an average Italian team, hugely impressive.

That great from continued into this current season with 22 matches played, 18 goals and 2 assists, accumulating to 20 goal contributions in 22 matches, simply incredible form from a young man and already 1 of those 22 goals being scored on his debut for Juventus.

A fantastic new talent playing for a side with excellent UCL form and improving scoring form with a great fixture ahead, the young Serbian had to make the top picks for the last 16 ahead.

Sebastien Haller

Sebastien Hallerย ~ UCL round of 16 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Team: Ajax

Cost: 9.3 million

Ownership: 26%

If someone told me years ago that Haller would be in my top picks in a champion league article I would have laughed because of his form back then. Now I sit here thinking it could be dangerous to go without Haller, so letโ€™s see whatโ€™s happened in between.

Weโ€™ve mentioned already that Ajax have surprised many UCL fans around the world with how relentlessly good theyโ€™ve been overall. Thatโ€™s only represented in the form theyโ€™ve shown this season.

In the last 10 matches Ajax have managed 9 wins and only 1 loss, some of the best form shown amount the elite teams in Europe. Going even further back to the 10 matches before three still won 7, drawn 2 and lost 1, great form.

Offensively the Dutch league leaders scored an unimaginable 38 goals in the same 10 match period in all competitions above. With an average of 3.8 goals scored per match Ajax lead the way amongst the best teams in Europe for goals scored in the same 10 match period.

Some would say the Dutch league is much weaker and has overreacted the numbers you see above but they also drew Sporting and Dortmund in the same group , winning 6 matches out of 6 played which alone is impressive but combined with the fact they scored a massive 20 goals averaging 3.3 goals scored per game making them an absolute force to be reckoned with offensively. More importantly a must buy into in terms of their attack.

Next up for Ajax is Benfica. In their last 10 the Portuguese team only managed 5 wins , with 4 losses and a draw their form seems to be plummeting, a good opportunity for Ajax to take advantage of that with their free scoring attack.

Haller really struggled to fit into the way West Ham played when he spent just short of 2 seasons there in 19/20 and 20/21, the 36 million move resulted in disappointment all around.

In 20/21 season Ajax came along and bought Haller, that season he went onto play 19 matches, scoring 11 goals and creating 5 assists, 16 goal contributions in 19 matches, a great start to life in the Dutch league.

This season Haller has really thrived, playing 18 matches, scoring 13 goals and creating 5 assists, accumulating to 18 goal contributions in 18 matches which is amazing form and something we look for in our premium players never mind our mid priced assets.

In the UCL Haller has continued that relentless form but also somehow improved on it. 6 matches played so far scoring a whopping 10 goals and creating 2 assists, thatโ€™s an incredible 12 attacking returns in 6 matches and actually averages 2 attacking returns per match. Not just worth his price tag but actually performing like we would want a UCL premium captaincy option to perform like.

Going without Haller in your fantasy teams makes absolutely no sense at all. Playing for  the highest scoring teams in European football on average, Haller himself on fire in terms of form and an inconsistent opponent ahead he has to be included in those teams.

So guys there it is, unfortunately, I wonโ€™t be posting my drafts anymore because wellโ€ฆIโ€™d like to actually win this thing! I imagine it wouldnโ€™t be hard to guess given my team is within the picks above. Good luck and once again thank you for reading.
