FPL DGW23- Best FPL Assets from Aston Villa

FPL DGW23 Best Aston Villa FPL assets- Watkins

The 2021-22 FPL season has been hard to navigate for most FPL managers because of AFCON, multiple postponed games every week, injuries, and the unpredictable form of some key players in the game. Over 20 games have been postponed till now and a huge chunk of those games are yet to be rescheduled. Aston Villa might offer an interesting choice of FPL assets as they are likely to have a DGW23(Everton, Leeds/Burnley) and have a decent run of fixtures between GW23 and GW28. They face Watford, Newcastle United and Leeds United which statistically have among the worst defenses in the league for Expected Goals Conceded(xGC). They also face Everton who has sacked their coach recently. Only Brighton poses a “difficult” game in this favorable fixture run.

Before going further, Do vote in this week’s FPL GW23 allaboutfpl captaincy poll. The same will be available in the captaincy analysis and metrics blog written by@AK_FPL1. The metrics has an 18/21 record this year. Last week the metric predicted Ronaldo as the best captaincy candidate. Stay tuned for the GW23 Captaincy metric to see who tops it. The results and the captaincy metric blog will be published soon based on the votes.

In this article, we shall analyze Aston Villa and scope out the best FPL assets from Villa for (probably) DGW23 and beyond.

Steven Gerrard is building a mini-Liverpool at Aston Villa, with both teams playing a similar style. The only difference is that Aston Villa does not press as higher up the pitch and urgently as Liverpool. We could use this tactical set up as a framework to identify valuable Aston Villa assets.

Ollie Watkins(7.7)

FPL DGW23 Best Aston Villa FPL assets- Watkins

Ollie Watkins was a staple in most FPL teams last season where he scored 14 goals and 9 assists. Although this season the goals have dried up. Aston Villa’s underperformance is largely to blame for that but many factors like the signing of Danny Ings and him shifting to left-wing have also played a role. There hasn’t been a creative spark in the team for Watkins to flourish but hopefully, with Coutinho coming into the team, that will change soon. He has scored 5 goals and assisted another from an xG of 5.98 and xA of 0.89 but do expect his output to improve significantly in the favorable fixture run. This makes him the best Aston Villa asset to own at the moment.

Watkins vs Ings when they started together under Gerrard’s new system(GW19 & GW22):

  • Expected Goals- 0.20 vs 0.01
  • Shots inside the box- 5 vs 3
  • Shots on Target- 1 vs 0
  • Penalty Box Touches- 14 vs 7

Philippe Coutinho(7.0)

FPL DGW23 Best Aston Villa FPL assets- Coutinho

You cannot possibly go through FPL Twitter or YouTube without coming across Coutinho. Everyone is talking about Coutinho after his enigmatic return to the Premier League against Manchester United where he scored a late equalizer to save a point for Villa. He took two shots of which both were on target and accumulated an xG of 0.72. Normally, waiting for a few games before transferring in a newly arrived player would be the smart thing to do but with a player like Coutinho, who has done very well in the league before, the risk might just pay off. Coutinho played as the left winger against Manchester United but there might be a possibility that he plays as the left-sided midfielder in a more advanced role that Jacob Ramsay currently occupies, So only get him in if you have enough appetite for the risk that comes with him.

Jacob Ramsey(4.6)

FPL DGW23 Best Aston Villa FPL assets- Ramsey

Son and Ronaldo were the most obvious replacements for Salah after the Egyptian left for AFCON earlier this month. Although both of them picked up an injury shortly after. FPL managers are now moving towards Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, and Ronaldo to hopefully find a reliable captain. Jacob Ramsay at 4.5 million will offer a fantastic means through which captains can move some of these funds around and afford the assets mentioned earlier. But, Ramsay may not be just a budget enabler to have on the bench. The English youngster has done very well, especially since the arrival of Steven Gerrard. He has accumulated an xG of 1.78 and an xA of 1.42 out of which he has scored three goals and assisted one. If his playing time is not affected by the arrival of Philippe Coutinho, he might offer a great option to cover Aston Villa especially at the price of 4.5 million.

Matty Cash(5.1)

FPL DGW23 Best Aston Villa FPL assets- Cash

Steven Gerrard has fixed an otherwise leaky Aston Villa defense. They are still struggling to keep clean sheets but the signs are quite positive and an easy fixture run will only help them rack up more clean sheets.  Matt Target would have been the more favorable Aston Villa asset to cover the defense considering his better offensive output and more affordable price tag but with the signing of Lucas Digne, his place in the starting 11 seems to be under threat. Throughout the season, Matty Cash has accumulated an xG of 0.98 and an xA tally of 1.90 of which he has scored a goal and has assisted none due to poor finishing by his teammates.

Lucas Digne(5.0)

FPL DGW23 Best Aston Villa FPL assets- Digne

Digne made his Aston Villa debut in the 2-2 draw against Manchester United in GW22. This might well be too early to judge him but looks to be the best defensive option from Villa at the moment. He is also priced 0.1 million lower than Cash(5.0) which makes him a good option. It is to be noted that Digne will be on some set pieces(Took 1 corner and 1 free kick against United). Here is the attacking numbers comparison of Digne and Cash from the game against Manchester United.

Digne vs Cash(GW22 against Manchester United):

  • Shots inside the box- 2 vs 0
  • Expected Goals- 0.17 vs 0.01
  • Big chances created- 1 vs 0
  • Key passes- 2 vs 2
  • Expected Assists- 0.49 vs 0.08
  • Penalty Box touches- 3 vs 2

Even though it is too early to judge from just one game, Digne looks ahead of Cash in terms of attacking numbers at the moment.
