FPL GW12 Sunday Fixture wise Review

Manchester City (2.40) 3 – 1 (0.26) Everton

Pep Guardiola, in the absence of De Bruyne, Torres, and Jack Grealish, still managed to throw up a few surprises in his team. But Manchester City are a juggernaut. Pep, rather surprisingly, opted to rotate Ruben Dias with Stones and Laporte in defense while Cancelo started yet another game on the trot for the club. Foden recovered sufficiently to start alongside Raheem Sterling and young Cole Palmer (4.5m) to make his front 3. Everton opted to play a 4-4-1-1 shape likely in hopes of catching City on the break but an early injury to Demarai Gray (replaced by Alex Iwobi) didn’t help and Everton never managed to get going. They looked like they were defending resolutely until a moment of sheer class from Cancelo unlocked their defense with Sterling finishing well. A Rodri thunderbolt then ended it as a contest.

Caveat for some Manchester City assets are their lack of nailedness and this applies to Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer as a preface before discussing their performance.

Bernardo Silva (7.2m, MID) has gone largely under the radar this season but the Portuguese midfielder has been consistently threatening and fairly secure in his minutes. He got 2 shots, both in the box and both ‘big chances’ today and created 1 chance to produce a game-high xGI of 1.05 mainly made up of his huge 0.91 xG. FPL managers looking to add a City asset in midfield should seriously consider Bernardo Silva! Heat map from the game below which shows that he’s getting in the box enough to back up his quality underlying.

Raheem Sterling (10.6m, MID) looked so threatening all game, had 3 shots, all in the box, and all big chances! That plus 2 chances created taking him to an xGI of 1.03. Wasteful or not, Sterling would’ve been a very interesting FPL asset if he was anything close to nailed.

Cole Palmer (4.5m, MID) isn’t likely to start too many more games but did an impressive job here with 4 shots, 2 in the box, 2 chances created of which 1 was a big chance for an xGI of 0.45.

Joao Cancelo (6.5m, DEF) produced a sumptuous assist from his inside left position where he comes into an attacking midfielders role off the left flank when City attack. 1 shot, 2 chances created and 1 big chance created today with an xGI of 0.38, seem’s as nailed as a fullback can be under Pep and playing for the best defense in the league in terms of expected data – get him in asap if you don’t own.

Foden (8.3m, MID) recovered from a knock to start this game but was subbed off just before the 60 min mark with City in command and a 2 goal lead. He still managed 1 shot, taken in the box, and 1 big chance created for an xGI of 0.29 before going off with a blank and a 1-pointer.

Not too much encouragement from Everton in this game however City are as difficult a fixture as any. Still, with injuries, subpar performances, and a stiff fixture schedule, the Everton team is a firm avoid from me at the moment.

Tottenham Hotspurs (2.13) 2 – 1 (1.39) Leeds United

Conte continued to play his favored 3-4-3 formation with Winks and Tanganga enforced changes replacing the injured Skipp and Romero in the line-up. Injury-hit Leeds United were without Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo, Raphinha, and Luke Ayling while Junior Firpo was only fit enough for the bench. They played young Gelhardt as forward with James and Harrison on the wings.

Despite being severely depleted, it was Leeds who were taking the initiative and attacking in the first half and deserved to go into the break in the lead against a dull and flat Tottenham side. However, Spurs came out of the break looking better and despite getting a slightly fortuitous goal, were value for the result in the end despite not setting the stage alight.

Daniel James (6.0m, MID) in the absence of Raphinha and a recognized striker, took up some good positions in the box and had a strong showing of 7 shots, 3 in the box, 1 big chance, and 1 chance created for a game-high xGI of 0.89. The return of Raphinha and a recognized forward would be expected to affect his output so for now, he’s one to monitor.

For Spurs, all the hype when Conte was appointed was about the impact on the fullbacks, and Reguilon’s (5.0m, DEF) performance didn’t disappoint. The left wing-back had 2 shots, both in the box, 1 big chance following in a free-kick, and created 1 chance for an xGI of 0.66 – the highest from Tottenham. His heat map below also shows that he took up very threatening positions for a defender. We’re gifted with some elite defenders on FPL this year such that big at the back is a legitimate strategy but for anyone looking for a mid-price option, the fixtures and performance are aligning to make Reguilon a great option.

Harry Kane (12.2, FWD) failed to score and was quiet for large parts of the game from an FPL point of view (still came deep and played some incredible passes as the elite striker that he is). He did however work himself into great positions a few times and was a terrific Meslier save and the post away from getting on the scoresheet. He managed 4 shots, 3 in the box, and 1 big chance for an xG of 0.54. He’s probably not shown enough to justify his high price tag but the lack of forward options combined with the emergence of value in every position means that he’s a gamble that some managers might be able to afford.

Ben Davies (4.4m, DEF) is playing left-sided center-half and isn’t just the cheapest way into the Spurs defense but also got forward to get possibly the best chance of the game where Meslier managed to close him down and make the save. 1 shot, a big chance in the box, for an xG value of 0.54.

A brief mention here of Son who was relatively quiet with 2 shots, 1 in the box, and no chances created. In terms of average position, he was further forward than Kane but he was usually wide of the goal when receiving in high areas and for people that haven’t made the early move to the South Korean winger, this performance was reason to pause and evaluate whether he truly will emerge as the better attacking asset from this Spurs side.
