Mid-Priced Forwards Could Be The Way This FPL season

Forwards are a key part of FPL. Along with being the main goal threats in your team, they are fantastic captaincy options. Even though they offer just 4 points for a goal, they are usually the likeliest anytime goalscorers. For 3 seasons, a forward has been the top scorer of the Premier League (Aubameyang shared the award with Salah and Mane in 2018/19).

Forwards could be premium like regulars Vardy and Kane, mid-priced like Bamford and Antonio, and budget-friendly like Pukki and Toney. Premiums usually offer stability in the team but cost a fortune. The budget ones are usually playing their first season (back) in the Premier League. Mid-priced could be in their second/third season in the Premier League with a reasonable amount of experience and goals.

Perhaps your motivation could be Callum Wilson saying he is aiming 20 goals this season or the idea of Kane playing in front of a star-studded Manchester City midfield. The idea of Watkins in a new Aston Villa attack or Iheanacho- the man we all had towards the end of last season. It could also be the surprise elements of recently promoted Pukki and Toney. Whatever your reason you should check out our detailed blogs on mid-priced, premiums and budget forwards.

Here we take a look at how you could go for mid-priced FPL forwards options over premiums this season.

Points comparison between mid priced and premium FPL forwards

For this comparison, we will be using the term points per million. This is calculated by dividing the total number of points by the price of the player. Let’s compare their total points from last season with their starting price this season.

Bamford- 24.30

Watkins- 22

Calvert-Lewin- 20.60

Wood- 19.7

Adams- 19.6

Kane-19.4

The top 5 here are all mid-priced while Kane in 6th is the only premium. In fact, in the top 10, Jamie Vardy is the only other premium option in 8th. This shows that even though premium options offer more consistency, mid-priced have better value.

Fixture rotation

The biggest problem with premiums is that they are hard to bench. You’d have to think twice before benching a 12.5m Harry Kane. Mid-priced forwards are easily rotatable. Here are some combinations in which you could rotate-

Watkins (GW 1-4), Bamford (GW 5-10)

Antonio (GW 1-3), Calvert-Lewin (GW 4-6)

Jimenez (GW 2-7), Adams (GW 8-12)

Bamford (GW 6-10), Jimenez (GW 11-14)

Iheanacho* (GW 13-16), Antonio (GW 18-22)

*not 100% nailed.

At this moment it is hard to predict how the premiums would rotate amongst themselves given the uncertainty of Kane’s future.

Forward-Midfield-Defence combination

As mentioned earlier, premium forwards cost a lot of money. You want to invest most of your money in midfield. Having players like Salah, Bruno and KDB give you more stability. Going for premiums might mean that you could miss out on these players. Going for mid-priced options, you could probably pick most of your midfield targets. Let’s take a look at some of the Midfielders and Defenders you could pick with these forwards.

Bamford-Sterling*-Chilwell (total cost=25m)

Antonio-Son-TAA (total cost=25m)

Jimenez-KDB-Digne (total cost=25m)

Wilson-Bruno-Shaw (total cost= 25m)

Watkins-Salah-Dias (total cost= 26m)

*not 100% nailed.

As you can see here the average cost of these trios is about 25m. Kane alone costs 12.5m which is 50% of what 3 players cost you. Going for mid-priced forwards enables you to go for better defensive options and more expensive midfield assets. Saving cash upfront helps you to pick players likely to play every week. Moreover, you only need a minimum of 1 forward in your team so you can always play the extra midfielder or defender.
