With the opening two gameweeks done and dusted, the 2021/22 FPL season is well underway. In anticipation of gameweek 3, I predict the 11 players who I believe will accumulate the greatest number of points.
Gameweek 3 sees two very impressive side go head-to-head: Liverpool and Chelsea. I can’t see there to be more than two goals in this fixture, and in my eyes there’s every chance that either team could concede. That’s why I have chosen to include no Liverpool or Chelsea assets – Salah, Trent, Mount, and Lukaku (my favourite picks from both sides) could all draw blanks.
Another thing to note is the exclusion of Luke Shaw. Many FPL managers, including myself, have felt disappointed in his lack of returns against Leeds and Southampton. I do see him having another quiet game and conceding against a lively Wolves side.
Before going further, do vote for us in the Football Content Awards Finals under the Best in Fantasy Football Editorials category. Also, vote for Net That Haul for Best in Fantasy Football Video. You can leave the other options to be blank as well. It will take just two mins and would mean so much for all of us involved. Here is also a link to all our Gameweek 3 blogs
Without further ado, here are my picks for GW3. All data is taken from Fantasy Football Scout.
FPL GW3 Dream Team
GKP – Lloris (£5.5m) vs Watford
Two clean sheets in two games. Maximum bonus points both times around. Can see him doing the same against Watford. The only concern for me is that Tottenham have conceded the most shots so far (42). However, when compared to Man City (34) and Wolves (42), Watford have had considerably less attempts at goal; with only 23.
DEF – Reguilón (£5.1m) vs Watford
Again, I really like Tottenham’s chances to go big against Watford. Out of their backline, Reguilón has shown the most potential for attacking returns. I have a good feeling he will get his first goal involvement in this game.
DEF – Coufal (£5m) vs Crystal Palace
West Ham have had a blistering start. Frustratingly, they have conceded three goals and have failed to keep a clean sheet in the opening two games. However, I expect them to into this game hungrier than ever. Palace are yet to score a goal, recently lost 1-0 to Watford in the Carabao Cup, and have the least goal attempts (11) of any team so far. I back Coufal to bag those CS points and be involved in those big chances.
DEF – Pereira (£5.5m) vs Norwich
Norwich have had a poor start, and I expect Leicester to exploit this in order to bounce back from a disappointing result on Monday. Down that right side, I think he’ll pick up some goal involvements this week.
MID – Fernandes (£12.1m) vs Wolves
After that Southampton game, I’m not surprised that people have lost confidence in United. I’m not confident that they won’t concede to a fierce Wolves side, but I’m still predicting them to pick up 3 points here. Of all the United players, Bruno is the one I’m backing to get a good result.
MID – Son (£10m) vs Watford
Son is up there with the best captaincy picks this week. With or without Kane, he always delivers, but I think the news of Kane staying will really give this team a lift and put them into the next gear. They’ve scored only two goals in two games, but I predict Tottenham to bag two or three here. If they do, you wouldn’t bet against Son being involved. He’s had 7 goals attempts, and compared to 10 from the likes of Salah that is very impressive. Liverpool have so far come up against some of the poorest defences in the league, whereas Spurs have faced title contenders City and a fierce Wolves line-up.
MID – Mahrez (£9m) vs Arsenal
I hate Pep’s roulette as much as the next person. However, I don’t think Arsenal are tough opponents here. They are yet to get on the score sheet, but have conceded two goals in both gameweeks. His surprise benching against Norwich will hopefully be promising news that he’ll start here. I may be a little biased because I have a Mahrez-shaped headache in my own squad, but after seeing them thrash Norwich I couldn’t leave a City asset out. On a side note, I would advise against putting the captain’s armband on a City player.
MID – Raphinha (£6.5m) vs Burnley
Another popular player among FPL managers. He had a quiet opener against United, but got his campaign underway last week against Everton. Now he faces a Burnley side who conceded the most shots in GW2 (27). He has an impressive 8 goal attempts over the first two games (that’s more than Son, and on par with Greenwood), so I’m looking forward to seeing how he performs this week. Don’t be surprised if he goes into double digit points.
MID – Benrahma (£6.3m) vs Crystal Palace
Not a lot needs to said to argue Benrahma’s case. He’s in top form in a confident West Ham side. Sure, he’s over-performing his expected figures, but I think he’ll continue to do so this week. Another potential captaincy pick, but I would definitely back his teammate Antonio over him.
FOR – Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) vs Brighton
I’m backing DCL over Ings or Bamford this week because of his sheer numbers. He has 9 goal attempts (the second greatest among forwards, behind only Antonio), and an expected xG of 2.28. He’s on penalties. Everton are against a Brighton defence without Veltman, Burn, or Lamptey to boost it. Everything is going in his favour this week, so it’s only right that he makes the team.
FOR – Antonio (£7.7m) vs Crystal Palace
To round off my West Ham triple-up, who else could it be? FPL managers love him, and I fully expect him to add to his tally this week. With some tough questions being asked of Liverpool and Man United’s assets going into GW3, he is my captaincy pick.
