Euro Fantasy Football | Group – A~ Review, Analysis and Top Fantasy Assets

It’s preparation time! Only a couple of weeks left until the long-awaited elite competition kicks off, so let’s fasten our belts and start reviewing all participating teams exploring their qualification path, current form, and top fantasy choices. In this blog, we take a look at the top fantasy choices from Euro Group A.

Euro Fantasy Football Group A analysis:

🇮🇹Italy

Italy Euro Fantasy Football Group A Review
Italy have come a long way after failing to qualify for the 2018 FIFA Worldcup

FIFA World Ranking: 7th
Qualification Record: W10, D0, L0
Goals For: 37
Goals Against: 4

Defense: The team has the “most promising” goalkeeper in the world in Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Italy’s defense has always been stingy in allowing opposition goals (4 goals conceded in the 10 qualification games), so I personally expect a decent number of clean sheets for “Gli Azzurri”. Leonardo Bonucci would be my selected defender here as he offers the most security in terms of starts and is a decent threat from set plays.

Attack: Italy has always been known for its strong defensive mindset over the years, however if you have been watching Mancini’s troops you would figure out that this team is implementing a different style resembled in keeping possession, threatening oppositions, and showing off some attacking masterclass. Jorginho, Marco Verratti, and Nicolo Barella should be regular starters in midfield and are all well-gifted players that can create a difference.

Ciro Immobile has been in fine form with Lazio for the past two seasons, however his scoring record for Italy is questionable and has Andrea Belotti as a threat for the lonely striker position. Federico Chiesa is a real talent but could also face some rotation threat from the likes of Bernandeschi/Berardi. My preferred “attacker” choice here would be Lorenzo Insigne who is having a stellar season at Napoli and should be featuring regularly.

General Thoughts: After failing to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the team was massively turned around and currently holds the longest unbeaten run in Europe. Qualifying with a 100% record and making the last four in the Nations League means that “Gli Azzurri” will certainly not be pushovers. With their confidence sky-high, I personally expect (and hope) Italy will be challenging for the Euro 2020 title.

Top Euro Fantasy Choices from Italy:

  • Insigne (Midfielder 8.5M)
  • Donnarumma (Goalkeeper 5.5M)
  • Bonucci (Defender 5.5M)

🇹🇷Turkey:

Turkey Euro Fantasy Football Group A Review

FIFA World Ranking: 29th
Qualification Record: W7, D2, L1
Goals For: 18
Goals Against: 3

Defense: Turkey’s defense was key to their success in the qualifications allowing just 3 goals in 10 games and that is from a group that included the likes of France, and Iceland. Caglar Soyuncu and Merih Demiral demonstrated a very solid central defensive pairing during that campaign. The Leicester defender was hit with a bad injury early this season but is recently picking up his form and should be ready to show up at the big stage next month. In fact, Soyuncu is my preferred choice from this backline given his importance to the team and him being a “reasonable” threat from set plays.

Attack: Turkey were not free-scoring in their qualification campaign, yet they have produced amazing attacking football back in March when they commenced their World Cup qualification games and have scored 10 goals past Netherlands, Norway, and Latvia. Inconsistency is a factor that really hinders the success of this team, but AC Milan’s playmaker Hakan Calhanouglu who features in a free roam role behind veteran striker Burak Yilmaz who is enjoyed an incredible season with Ligue 1 title winners Lille should be considered for anyone anticipating strong Turkish performances throughout the competition.

General Thoughts: After qualifying from a tough group and taking four points off World Cup holders France, Turkey should not be underestimated. However, they need to find some consistency in their performances as this has been their main downside, you simply can’t beat the likes of Netherlands and Norway, then slip up against Latvia! and that is exactly what Turkey did in their World Cup qualifying campaign a couple of months ago.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿Wales:

Wales Euro Fantasy Football Group A Review

FIFA World Ranking: 17th
Qualification Record: W4, D2, L2
Goals For: 10
Goals Against: 6

Defense: Wales started their qualification campaign badly losing two of their first three games but eventually managed to qualify from a very tight group for their second major tournament. The defense particularly has been hit by the retirement of veteran Ashley Williams, and although they have two potentially talented defenders in Rondon (Tottenham) and Williams (Liverpool), they remain vulnerable at the back in my opinion.

Attack: Wales are no longer “only” reliant on magical moments from their stars Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey upfront, given their attack is now supported by the likes of Harry Wilson, Daniel James, and Tyler Roberts, all of which have impressed lately. Bale particularly has been in fine form over the last month or so with Spurs, which should bring up optimism in the Welsh camp. Ramsey on the other hand has endured a patchy season at Juventus but must be raging to go on and fight for Wales.

General Thoughts: After their unbelievable run in Euro 2016 and reaching the semi finals, it will be a really difficult task to ask for replicating such an achievement. However, Gareth Bale has shown that he is a different player at international stage and has always been there for Wales when it counts. Given their vulnerability and lack of experience at the back, I personally believe that Wales will need to score frequently if they want to keep their chances of progressing high, and that’s definitely doable given the depth/support that they possess in those attacking positions.

🇨🇭Switzerland:

Switzerland Euro Fantasy Football Group A Review

FIFA World Ranking: 13th
Qualification Record: W5, D2, L1
Goals For: 19
Goals Against: 6

Defense: Switzerland has a mix of talent and experience among its squad which is key for any nation. A team that is well known for defensive stability over the last decade or so, supported by Sommer who is an excellent shot-stopper and a strong backline featuring the likes of Rodriguez, Akanji, and Elvedi resembles an interesting pool to look at. Rodriguez is always an interesting pick in fantasy games due to his attacking playstyle, freekicks/corners involvement, (maybe penalties?) but it’s worth noting that he had no club goals/assists for the past two seasons. Can he switch off his poor club form and impress internationally as he has always done, you’d have to follow your gut on this one especially when Elvedi is 1 mil cheaper.

Attack: When we talk Switzerland, the first name that is brought to our minds is Xherdan Shaqiri. The Liverpool winger didn’t take part in the qualifiers because of an injury and it must be said that the team was missing that bit of flair that he brings. Team captain Granit Xhaka is also a top player who proved to be much more influential for his country than at Arsenal, particularly going forward. In attack, Haris Seferovic enjoyed a fine season at Benfica scoring 20 goals and assisting 7, so could be one to put our eyes on.

General Thoughts: Switzerland didn’t play exceptional attacking football in the qualifiers for Euro 2020, yet ended up topping their group. The return of Shaqiri and the fact that Vladimir Petkovic has a set of talented players that have been featuring together for a long time bodes well for Switzerland to at least qualify from this group. Their main task would be then to get past the round of 16 which they have been eliminated from in their last 3 major tournaments.
