2020/21 FPL TOTS: The Best Performers of The Season

The 20/21 FPL season has been one of the maddest in FPL history. With postponements left, right and center, it’s easy to forget the majority of the season. Today, I will try and pick out the 2020/21 FPL TOTS, picking out the best XI of the campaign.

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Goalkeeper

GK – Emi Martínez, £5.3, Points: 186

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Goalkeeper ~ Emi Martinez
Martínez was 1 point off the record for a GK, a fantastic season from the Argentinian

Starting off at the back, Emi Martínez has had a fantastic campaign. Beginning the campaign as a £4.5 goalkeeper, many preferred the options of Maty Ryan & Alex McCarthy. But Martínez has been nothing short of exceptional this season. The Argentinian amassed 186 points, 1 off the record for a GK (Brad Friedel, 187), highlighting his incredible season. At an xGC of 54.2, Martínez only conceded 45, saving 9 goals in theory; impressive numbers. Whenever the shot-stopper would record a Clean Sheet, his save points would result in double-digit hauls, totaling 7. A great season for Martínez, long may it continue.

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Defenders

DEF – Stuart Dallas, £5.5, Points: 171

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Defenders ~ stuart Dalllas
Dallas has been a surprising star this season, excelling in attack as much in defence

No one thought we would be talking about Dallas at the start of the season, most opting for Luke Ayling as a way into the Leeds defense. But the Northern Irishman has been a dream for fantasy managers, occupying a Midfield role. Playing as a Central Midfielder, Dallas has been a perfect way to attack returns at both ends of the pitch. Accumulating 8 goals and 3 assists, Dallas is the most prolific Defender in FPL history! He has also had 5 big chances, 2nd most in the division, as well as 16 shots in the box. Although I see him being moved to a MID next season, what a season he’s had.

DEF – Trent Alexander-Arnold, £7.8, Points: 160

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Defenders ~ Trent Alexander Arnold
After a shaky start, Trent has finished the season strong, pushing for a place in Southgate’s squad

TAA was a player in the majority of teams at the beginning, after an incredible 19/20. But Trent had a disappointing first half of the campaign, only getting 2 assists in the first half of the season. But after GW19, the Englishman has turned it on; 2 goals and 6 assists, alongside 7 clean sheets. An impressive finish, with Trent’s forward position being a huge plus for fantasy managers, who target returns at both ends of the pitch. Having amassed the 3rd most FPL points among Defenders, TAA has still had a great season.

DEF – Aaron Cresswell, £5.7, Points: 153

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Defenders ~ Aaron Cresswell
Cresswell has had a remarkable campaign, putting in consistent performances every week

A name not many expected to perform well, the West Ham defender has had a strong season. Cresswell amassed 11 assists, at an xA of 6.67, outperforming his expected data. The Englishman has also been on the majority of set pieces, highlighting his influence in the Hammers’ squad. Alongside 11 clean sheets, Cresswell has returned at both ends of the pitch throughout the season. An unsung hero this season, a great season from the Defender will be remembered by owners.

DEF – Rúben Dias, £5.9, Points: 142

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Defenders ~ Ruben Dias
Since coming into the side, Dias has transformed City into the best Defensive team in the League

Despite being the 6th highest points scorer this season, I have included Dias for his influence on the entire City defense. Since arriving, City have the lowest xGC (29.21) in the division. This has culminated in players like John Stones & João Cancelo gaining more points from clean sheets. Dias’ 17 clean sheets are 2nd most in the league only to Ederson. 1 goal and 1 assist is a bonus from the Portuguese, who’s primary role is to pick up clean sheets. He has also been the most nailed defender in City’s side, being the way into the City team for fantasy managers. Underrated at times, but a great FPL season.

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Midfielders

MID – Bruno Fernandes, £11.3, Points: 244

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Midfielders ~ Bruno Fernandes
Fernandes has been fantastic this season, rarely blanking in a strong campaign

Being a popular asset throughout the season, Fernandes has justified his premium price. With consistent hauls and proven returns, not many dared to transfer the midfielder out, in fear of losing out on points. The highest-scoring player this season (244 points), Fernandes has scored 18 goals, assisting 14. Despite many saying he is a ‘penalty merchant’ the Portuguese has constantly provided the goods. A highlight was in United’s triple game week, where 19 points turned many manager’s seasons around. Forever an FPL legend here’s to another one next year.

MID – Mo Salah, £12.9, Points: 231

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Midfielders ~ Mo Salah
The Egyptian has had a strong campaign, finishing as the League’s 2nd Top Goalscorer

An ever-present in many teams, Salah has once again justified his status as the most expensive player in the game. His hat-trick at the start of the season was a hint at what was to come, amassing 22 goals and 6 assists this season. The Egyptian also had 98 shots in the box, the most in the league, alongside the 2nd most big chances (33). Once again, a fantastic season from Salah, who seems to always be one of the best in the game.

MID – Heung-Min Son, £9.6, Points: 228

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Midfielders ~ Son
Son was one of the surprises of the season, finishing as the 3rd top points scorer in the game

Son has had a surprisingly strong campaign, rising in price by £0.6 by the start of the season. A superb start resulted in 12 goals and 6 assists in his first 19 games, coupled with 18 big chances and 7 big chances created. His form did drop off towards the end of the season, but 10 attacking returns in 19 games is still strong from the South Korean. Son’s explosive nature was a huge plus, highlighted in his 24 pointer against Southampton and his 18 pointer against United. Well done Sonny!

MID – İlkay Gündoğan, £5.5, Points: 157

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Midfielders ~ Gundogan
The German was a great option in the core of the campaign, turning in hauls every week

Gündoğan only came into manager’s thoughts after De Bruyne suffered an injury against Crystal Palace, resulting in Gündo playing a more forward role. The German has scored 13 goals at an xG of 8.82, showing how he has outperformed his expected stats. This includes a 19 pointer against Spurs and a 13 pointer against Liverpool. Despite finishing as the 5th top points scoring midfielder, I have included him for his budget price of £5.5, being an enabler and a cheap way into the City midfield for the majority of managers. A slow start, but a hero in the middle of the season.

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Forwards

FWD – Harry Kane, £11.9, Points: 242

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Forwards ~ Harry Kane
In what could be his last season at Spurs, Kane was the Top Scorer & Assiter in the division

I am running out of words to describe Harry Kane. The talisman has had an incredible campaign, continuously scoring throughout the season. Finishing as top scorer (23) and top assister (14) marks an outstanding season. Kane has also taken 31 big chances this season, with 84 shots in the box, highlighting his strong conversion rate. A memorable moment was Kane’s 4 assists and 1 goal against Southampton. If this is Kane’s last season as a Spurs player, then he’s certainly gone out with style.

FWD – Patrick Bamford, £6.6, Points: 194

2020/21 FPL TOTS ~ Forwards ~ Bamford
Bamford was one of the surprises of the season, finishing as the league’s 3rd top goalscorer

Many manager’s refused to think about Bamford for their teams, feeling he couldn’t do it in the prem. But how wrong they were! The Englishman has led the line in an exciting Leeds side this season, finishing on 17 goals this season, 3rd most in the division. His 11 assists as well as very impressive for a forward, showing he is equally as creative as he is clinical. He is the 2nd most owned player in the game (45.2%), with most manager’s entrusting Bamford for his consistent goal scoring.
