FPLGW 28 Review & GW 29 Plans
Points: 44 points + GW rank: 3.9m
I have somehow beaten my 12th cup opponent this week (44 vs 39 points). There are now only 1,024 managers remaining in the competition with 10 more H2H matches to win. Some very tight weeks recently, including wins with just 1 point or 2 point leads! It feels like every opponent I’m facing now is a Top 10K team, with very strong squads. Follow my journey for a first-place finish in this weekly team reveal.
After the Kane, Son and Bruno blanks, I went into the Monday night fixture with Salah (c) and a lot of optimism. Fair to say that owning Salah for his 12th blank in 15 games was a real kick in the teeth.
I’m just glad that my cup opponent’s captain Kane did not knock me out of the competition and make my beloved Arsenal lose a match. Not too bothered by the 6 points benched from Dallas as he was never going to start over Konsa or my Man City pair of Dias and Cancelo. Ironically, on that same note, it was Dallas and Dunk coming off manager’s benches which cost me my rank drop. Pre autosubs my rank was just a small red arrow down to 106k.
My overall rank dropped from 104k to 117k.
Overall Rank going into FPL GW 29
I am now just 7 points outside the Top 100k (a personal goal I strive for every season).
The all elusive consecutive Top 10k finish is looking difficult to achieve whilst I am still 81 points behind! Perhaps a more realistic stretch target for the season is the Top 50k (33 points behind right now).
FPL Blank Gameweeks (29 & 33)
We enter Blank Gameweek 29 with just the four fixtures. Then there is a long 2-week international break before we go into the final quarter of the season. The Everton and Aston Villa DGW we had hoped for in either GW28 or 30 is now not going to happen till much later in the season.
In my opinion, it is better to navigate this GW with FTs and points hits rather than Free Hit chip. The Free Hit chip could be far more useful in BGW33 when Spurs, Man City, Fulham and Southampton all blank for the EFL cup final. Disclaimer, I used my FH already and only have my second Wildcard left for this season.

Current GW 29 team with 2FT and £0.0m in the bank
Some thoughts about this plus my chip strategy for BGW29 & BGW33
- Last GW I sold McCarthy for Areola (and rolled my second FT)
- This GW I will have 10 players plus Son (after using both FTs)
- I will be captaining Kane, Raphinha or Aubameyang (if I buy him)
- Plan to go from 3x Man City players down to just 2 of them. I would also like to get a Brighton defender so I have a player who has a decent fixture in both BGW29 and 33.
- Originally planned to use my second Wildcard around GW 31 to prepare for the final stretch of the season.
- I am starting to consider WC in GW33 though when the next Blank Gamweek is.
- Teams who I have players for in BGW29 have decent fixtures in GW30 so it makes holding the WC till GW 31 easier.
I believe there isn’t a one size fits all answer for the next set of BGWs and DGWs. It will predominantly depend on if you still have your FH, BB, TC and second Wildcard handy.

Captain for FPL GW 29
I had originally captained Raphinha. He operates on the wing where Fulham concede the most Big Chances. Last game vs Man City, 3 of the 4 Big Chances came down that side of the field. The fact that I own 3x Leeds players and the Fulham goalkeeper, has led me to reconsider going with the “punt” captaincy option.
Harry Kane is likely to be the highest captained player of the GW but the Aston Villa game will not be an easy game for Spurs, especially as they will be flying back from their Europa League match and Son looks set to miss out. Kane is my current bus team captain, having moved the armband back off Raphinha.
If I buy Aubameyang with one of my 2FTs, then I will be monitoring his minutes in the Europa League before potentially punting on him as my captain over Kane.
If you are on a Free Hit and are buying somebody like Trossard, I really like him as a captaincy option this week. I think that Dunk is also a great captaincy option. Brighton has kept 6 clean sheets in their last 7 games vs Newcastle. Newcastle are injury-ravaged and Dunk could be a high ceiling punt. It reminds me too much of the infamous Duffy captaincy in a DGW a few seasons ago and so I will be steering clear. There is merit though as this is the standout fixture of the GW to target.
I’ve included the Opta Stats from Fantasy Football Hub for Kane, Raphinha, Aubameyang and Dunk. In case you wanted to have a look at the four players I like the most for captaincy this week.

Updated Watchlist for FPL GW 29:
(Bold names are new this week)
I will maintain an updated Watchlist in this section. I have identified players that I want to buy for my own team. I will also be listing which players are on the chopping blocks in favour of these players on the watchlist.
Goalkeepers: Martinez
Out-list:
Defenders: Dunk, Veltman, Tierney, Azpilecuta, Cresswell, Maguire, Rudiger
Out-list: Cancelo
Midfielders: Odegaard, Bale, Aubameyang, Saka
Out-list: Salah
Forwards: Calvert–Lewin, Werner
Out-list:
Players I’ve removed/added to my Watchlist ahead of FPL GW 29:
Dunk, Veltman, Tierney- added to my out-list as Cancelo replacements for GW29
Cancelo – added to my out-list so I can reduce my coverage in Man City players.
Azpilicueta– added to my watchlist for GW30 onwards to target the great Chelsea fixtures.
Odegaard – I love him as a differential punt this week
Removed
McCarthy– removed from my out-list as I sold him for Areola last week.
Areola – removed from my watchlist as I bought him last week.
Grealish – removed from my watchlist, he isn’t fit enough and Villa have lost their hopes of a DGW in the near future.
Digne – removed from my watchlist
Targett – removed from my watchlist
These are the variety of options I am going to decide between:
- Cancelo to Dunk and Salah to Aubameyang
- Cancelo to Veltman and Salah to Aubameyang
- Cancelo to Tierney/Creswell and Son/Salah to Bale/Odegaard
I am most likely to do move 1 or 2 above. Number 3 is just there to give an idea into my wider thought process.
1FT in GW30
- I will be looking to get a Chelsea defender into my team from GW30 onwards, I like the look of Rudiger, Azpilicueta and even Mendy in goal.
