Thursday night saw GW13 come to a close and the 36% of FPL managers who placed their trust in Kevin De Bruyne or Bruno Fernandes, were left feeling a little underwhelmed with their captaincy points returns, particularly considering how nice the fixtures were on paper heading into GW13. 19.57% of managers captained Bruno Fernandes (2points), with 16.15% of managers opting for Kevin De Bruyne (4points). But there’s no time left to look back at previous decisions as we have another deadline fast approaching us. Here’s an analysis of FPL GW 14 Captain picks.
FPL GW 14 Captaincy poll:
Kevin De Bruyne vs Southampton (A)
With Kevin De Bruyne (27.1%) seemingly becoming frustrated with his Manchester City teammates for their inability to put away several chances he had created, it has to be said that the Belgian international hasn’t quite looked in top form himself in recent weeks, despite two double-digit returns in GW10 and GW11 against Burnley and Fulham.
It’s clear that Manchester City are lacking a cutting edge in front of goal so far in this campaign, with the creativity of David Silva proving to be a big miss. Combined with Sergio Aguero’s ongoing injury woes, this has opened up opportunities for the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Ferran Torres and Raheem Sterling.
However, I don’t think any of them have really taken the opportunity to cement their place in the team, with each of them showing inconsistencies in their game. The usually sharp and dynamic City attack have been quite blunt in the final third so far this campaign, especially in comparison to what we are used to seeing from this Pep Guardiola team.
But with all that said, Sergio Aguero is now back in contention to return to the starting eleven, and his influence and prolific finishing ability could be the difference and exactly what City need to kick-start their season.
My opinion: The City attack has been toothless in front of goal in recent weeks, bar the accustomed 5-0 home win over Burnley. City have failed to score more than two goals in 10 of their 12 premier league games this season, which doesn’t fill me with confidence placing the armband on De Bruyne heading into the GW14 fixture against Southampton.
If Aguero is back in the mix, he could provide that potency that City have been lacking, and De Bruyne’s creativity could well translate into the usual FPL output we all expect, from arguably the Premier League’s best player.
Nevertheless, he is always capable of producing the goods, but it just feels a little risky after the West Brom draw and with Southampton’s excellent run of form.

2. Bruno Fernandes vs Leeds United (H)
Bruno Fernandes (42.4%) picked up his first-ever away ‘blank’ in the Premier League since signing for Manchester United, much to the frustration of those who gave the Portuguese international the armband in GW13 against Sheffield United.
Sheffield United managed to prevent Fernandes from having the freedom to dominate and dictate the game as much as we have seen in previous weeks, more noticeably when Manchester United play away from home.
Up next for Solksjaer’s men are old-school rivals Leeds Utd, a team who are known for their attacking style of play and defensive frailties. Both of which could bode well for Bruno Fernandes and Manchester United if they can catch Leeds on the counterattack.
Home form is an issue for the Red Devils, with just 2 wins at Old Trafford in 6 home games. But then again, Leeds United are not as impressive away from home as they are at Elland Road, ranking second from bottom for both shots conceded in the penalty area (69) and for big chances conceded (20).
My opinion: I’m expecting goals in the Man Utd vs Leeds game. It should be a good battle between the two sides. Leeds will no doubt look to exploit the Man Utd defense with the high press and Man Utd will look to break on the counter. Leeds are joint second with Sheffield United in terms of the number of goals conceded so far in the Premier League (24). I think Bruno is a fantastic captaincy candidate for GW14. This one could be a physical encounter that reignites the fierce rivalry of the previous Premier League era.

3. Mo Salah vs Crystal Palace (A)
FPL GW 13 saw Mo Salah (36.6%) go under the radar slightly in terms of captaincy, with just 11.82% of FPL managers keeping the faith and giving Salah the armband. Their faith was rewarded, as the Egyptian drew first blood in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over former league leaders Tottenham Hotspurs, picking up 7points in the process.
Liverpool impressed in the game against Spurs, and looked to have a bit more of a swagger about them going forward. Liverpool face Crystal Palace in FPL GW 14 and Salah has an impressive record against The Eagles, having scored 4 goals and picking up 3 assists in his previous four outings against Palace.
My opinion: Salah has been in fine form so far this season, notching 11 goals and 3 assists in 12 appearances in the Premier League. Liverpool looked to have a bit more rhythm and intensity against Spurs, and with his consistency so far this season, Mo Salah really does tick all the boxes as a prime captaincy candidate going into FPL GW 14.

4. Heung-Min Son vs Leicester City (H)
Those who chose to stick with Heung-Min Son (60.7%) from GW9 will be happy. GW9 was the start of what looked like a ‘difficult’ set of fixtures for Spurs. Facing MCI, CHE, ARS, CRY & LIV over the last 5 game weeks. During this period Son has picked up 40 FPL points, averaging 8 points per game. Son’s ability to score and produce FPL points consistently, regardless of fixture difficulty, means he can no longer be ignored. Son has 6 double-digit hauls in FPL this season, which is more than any other player.
With 5 goals and 4 assists against Leicester City in 8 Premier League starts against the foxes, it would be no surprise to see the South Korean build on this tally in FPL GW 14.

Teammate Harry Kane (42%) is second only to Heung-Min Son for total FPL points, currently sitting on 109 FPL points, with 9 goals and 10 assists to his name. The former Leicester City loanee has an incredible goalscoring record against The Foxes, finding the back of the net on14 occasions in his last 10 league appearances vs Leicester City.
My opinion: Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane continue to produce the goods. The fixtures from GW9-GW13 turned out to be a test in which Son & Kane passed with flying colours. As a non-Son or Kane owner, I know how difficult it can be to climb rank when a player with such high ownership continues to produce the goods.
Son is the highest-scoring player in the game with 114 points and still valued at under 10mil. Just keep him in your team and reap the rewards. Are Kane and Son captaincy candidates, against a Leicester City side that has kept just 1 clean sheet in their last 5? Ohh Yes!

5&6 Grealish & Callum Wilson
If you fancy taking a little bit of a punt on a captain for FPL GW14, Jack Grealish (43.5%) and Callum Wilson (16.7%) could be nice alternatives to consider for the armband.
Grealish is up against West Brom (A) next in a West Midlands derby, whilst Callum Wilson is at home to Fulham. Grealish has impressed in recent weeks, looking dangerous going forward and unfortunate not to have a higher point tally at this stage.
He certainly passes the eye-test and I think he could be the key man for Villa, against a West Brom side that has conceded the most goals in the league so far with 26. West Brom did put up a good display in the 1-1 draw against Man City in GW13, but with the sacking of Slaven Bilic earlier in the week, it will be interesting to see how The Baggies respond.
Callum Wilson has now returned in 7 of his last 11 starts. He ranks 1st for Newcastle’s goal involvement and faces a Fulham side that has failed to keep a clean sheet away from home this season. Callum Wilson also hit double-digit hauls in home games against Burnley and Everton earlier in the season.
