Goal Keeper Analysis ahead of 2020/21 FPL Season

The FPL goalkeepers position is often the position where the best savings can be made. This is why an £8.5m FPL Goalkeeper combination is often the most popular strategy amongst the most seasoned FPL players. In 19/20, the two top points-scoring GKPs, Pope and Henderson, both started the season at £4.5m. Ederson (£6.0m), the 19/20 golden glove winner, finished 37 points behind Pope, at £1.5m more.

This proves that spending more on goalkeepers doesn’t necessarily mean gaining more points. This money can be better invested to strengthen the midfield and attack, both of which have many great options.

The budget ‘keepers’ all play for ‘weaker’ teams that often concede more chances. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they score fewer points. In fact, it gives them more potential to score points from both saves and bonus points.

Following the release of PL fixtures yesterday, here’s a detailed analysis on the £4.5m starting FPL Goalkeepers.

Alex McCarthy GKP SOU

Average FDR for first 10 GWs: 3.0

McCarthy started every match from GW12 onwards in 19/20. He claimed 7 shut-outs from that point. Only 8 GKPs surpassed that tally and all of them are priced at £5.0m or more. McCarthy’s total of 79 saves ranked 8th in that period, highlighting his multiple routes to points.

Mathew Ryan GKP BHA

Ryan was the 8th top-scoring GKP in 19/20, with 135 points. His potential for both save and bonus points boosts his appeal as the go-to option in the budget bracket. Ryan recorded the second-best BPS(754) and registered (14) Bonus points last season. This trend is set to continue this season.

Tom Heaton GKP AVL

Average FDR for first 10 GWs: 2.9

Heaton has recently returned to training at Aston Villa, after sustaining a knee injury in GW21 v Burnley. Only Martinez averaged more saves per game of the £4.5m GKPs. AVL weren’t great defensively though, as only BOU and NOR kept less shut-outs and only NOR conceded more goals. Rumors are that Martinez could be on his way to villa park which reduces his FPL appeal.

Illan Meslier GKP LEE

Meslier stepped up as Leeds’ goalkeeper during Casilla’s 8 match ban for on-pitch racial abuse. Following his 7 shut-outs from 10 games, he appears to be their new first choice between the sticks. Meslier’s save percentage is the best of all the budget FPL Goalkeepers.

Emiliano Martinez GKP ARS

Martinez turned in a series of impressive displays after securing a starting role towards the end of 19/20. Only Lloris had a better save percentage among all FPL Goalkeepers. It is unlikely, but Martinez could continue in goal for the Gunners, even with Leno (£5.0m) now back fit. He could also make a move to villa which increases his FPL appeal.

Sam Johnstone GKP WBA

Johnstone made the most saves of the promoted GKPs in 19/20. However, West Brom’s defensive record suggests they may not appeal to managers who prefer to rotate their picks home and away. Only 5 of their shut-outs came at home.

Aaron Ramsdale GKP SHU

Stats from Bourenmouth season 

Ramsdale has recently signed for Sheffield United, who proved to be one of the best defenses in the PL 19/20. Only BUR, LIV, and MCI kept more clean sheets, and only MUN, MCI, and LIV conceded fewer goals than the Blades. Henderson (£5.5m) was the 2nd top points-scoring GKP in 19/20, with 160pts, and Ramsdale could be expected to perform similarly. Ramsdale also recorded 13 bonus points more than the likes of Alisson and Schmeichel.
