FPL Assets from promoted teams: Analysis

Forwards from promoted teams

There obviously isn’t much choice when it comes to newly-promoted forwards, with just three teams to choose from. ‪I’m not including West Brom’s Robson-Kanu or Austin as they’ve shared minutes throughout the season, and the Baggies are likely to make a new signing this summer. That leaves just Fulham’s and Leeds’ front-men.

FPL Forwards from promoted teams in order of FPL appeal:

  1. Mitrovic    FWD   FUL
  2. Bamford   FWD   LEE

1. Aleksandar Mitrovic   FWD   FUL

Mitrovic FPL Fulham
Mitrovic is back in PL
Price: £6.5m
Playing position: ST
Appearances: 40
⚽️ 26 goals   🅰️ 2 assists
Per game:   👟 2.7 shots   🥅 24% conversion
⏳ 138 minutes per goal
❌ 12 big chances missed

Mitrovic (25) was the top goalscorer and 3rd for SpG in the Championship 19/20. He is Fulham’s penalty-taker, netting from the spot 5 times. Mitrovic was involved in >40% of their goals and had the best mins/goal ratio in the league. This makes him the best newly promoted option.

2. Patrick Bamford FWD LEE

Patrick Bamford FPL
Price: £5.5m
Playing position: ST
Appearances: 45
⚽️ 16 goals   🅰️ 2 assists
Per game:   👟 2.8 shots   🥅 13% conversion
⏳ 216 minutes per goal
❌ 33 big chances missed

Bamford (26) was the Championship’s 7th top goalscorer. With the most shots and the most big chances missed in the league, he is considered to be a very wasteful ST. Bamford was involved in over 20% of Leeds’ goals.

Midfielders from promoted teams

There is a wealth of newly promoted midfield options to choose from, with each club having a stand-out option. I have also included another option from each club, who are likely to be priced slightly cheaper.

FPL Midfield assets from promoted teams in order of FPL appeal:

  1. Pereira          MID   WBA
  2. Harrison       MID   LEE
  3. Cavaleiro     MID   FUL
  4. Phillips          MID   WBA
  5. Cairney         MID   FUL
  6. Hernandez   MID   LEE

1. Matheus Pereira   MID   WBA

Pereira WBA FPL Assets from promoted teams
Predicted price: £6.5m
Playing position: CAM / RW
Appearances: 42
⚽️ 8 goals   🅰️ 16 assists
Per game:   👟 1.9 shots   🔑 2.8 KPs
🎨 20 big chances created

Pereira (24) was the most creative player in the Championship 19/20, as the top assister and big chance creator. He was directly involved in >30% of West Brom’s goals, making him their stand-out attacker. Now that Pereira has joined the Baggies permanently, he will be a key player for FPL managers to target.

2. Jack Harrison   MID   LEE

Jack Harrison FPL Assets from promoted teams
Price: £5.5m
Playing position: LW
Appearances: 46
⚽️ 6 goals 🅰️ 8 assists
Per game:   👟 1.2 shots   🔑 1.9 KPs
🎨 17 big chances created

Harrison (23) was Leeds’ most creative player, creating the 3rd most big chances in the league. He was also their 2nd top assister and 3rd top goalscorer. With another year on loan at the Whites from Man City confirmed, Harrison could be a target for FPL managers keen to invest in the Leeds attack.

3. Ivan Cavaleiro   MID   FUL

FPL Assets from promoted teams Ivan Cavleiro
Predicted price: £5.5m
Playing position: LW / RW
Appearances: 43
⚽️ 6 goals 🅰️ 7 assists
Per game: 👟 1.0 shots 🔑 1.5 KPs
🎨 14 big chances created

Cavaleiro (26) created the 5th most big chances in the Championship last season. At Fulham, no one assisted more than him, and only Cairney had a higher KPpG. Cavaleiro was also their joint 3rd top scorer. He’s likely to become a regular starter with the departures of Fulham’s loanee midfielders.

4. Matt Phillips   MID   WBA

FPL Assets from promoted teams Matt Phillips
Price: £5.5m
Playing position: RW
Appearances: 39
⚽️ 7 goals   🅰️ 6 assists
Per game:   👟 1.0 shots   🔑 1.4 KPs
🎨 14 big chances created

Phillips’ (29) 7G & 6A came in 27 starts at the beginning of the season. He shared corner duties with Pereira and created the 5th most big chances in the Championship. Phillips may prove the pick of the Baggies’ options if Pereira doesn’t join them permanently.

5. Tom Cairney   MID   FUL

Tom Cairney FPL Assets from promoted teams
Price: £5.5m
Playing position: CM / CAM
Appearances: 39
⚽️ 8 goals   🅰️ 3 assists
Per game:   👟 0.8 shots   🔑 1.8 KPs
🎨 6 big chances created

Cairney (29) is Fulham’s club captain, playing as the more attacking of the two CMs, behind Onomah. He started 83% of their games, only missing out due to injury/illness. At Fulham, only Mitrovic has scored more goals, and no one has a higher KPpG than Cairney.

6. Pablo Hernandez   MID   LEE

Pablo Hernandez FPL Assets from promoted teams
Price: £6.0m
Playing position: CAM
Appearances: 36
⚽️ 9 goals   🅰️ 9 assists
Per game:   👟 1.4 shots   🔑 2.3 KPs
🎨 13 big chances created

Hernandez (35) had the most goal involvements at Leeds. Only Harrison created more big chances, and no one had a higher KPpG. Following a hamstring injury, Hernandez only played >45mins in 2 games from GW38-46. He may continue to have his mins managed due to his reoccurring injuries.

Defenders from promoted teams

Rotating budget defenders next season may prove to be a successful strategy. FPL managers could be more inclined to do so with the defensive success of recently promoted Sheffield United, and Wolves before them. The options I have picked out also present some attacking threat.

FPL Defenders assets from promoted teams in order of FPL appeal:

  1. Dallas   DEF   LEE
  2. Ayling   DEF   LEE
  3. Bryan   DEF   FUL
  4. Ajayi     DEF   WBA

1. Stuart Dallas   DEF   LEE

Dallas FPL Assets from promoted teams
Dallas or Ayling?
Predicted price: £4.5m
Playing position: LB
Appearances: 45
⚽️ 5 goals   🅰️ 3 assists
Per game:   👟 1.3 shots   🔑 1.0 KPs
🛡️ 19 clean sheets
🎨 11 big chances created

Dallas (29) is part of the defense that kept the most clean sheets and conceded the least goals in the Championship 19/20. His underlying stats make him more appealing than RB, Ayling. He created the 3rd most big chances at Leeds with 11, compared to Ayling’s 8. Dallas’s 58 shots were 30 more than Ayling and placed 2nd.

2. Luke Ayling   DEF   LEE

Luke Ayling FPL Assets from promoted teams
Watch out for Ayling Managers
Predicted price: £4.5m
Playing position: RB
Appearances: 37
⚽️ 4 goals   🅰️ 4 assists
Per game:   👟 0.8 shots   🔑 0.8 KPs
🛡️ 17 clean sheets
🎨 8 big chances created

Ayling (28) could be a great cheaper alternative to LB, Dallas. Per game, he made more interceptions and clearances than Dallas. These better defensive statistics could make him the stronger candidate for bonus points when Leeds keep a clean sheet.

3. Joe Bryan   DEF   FUL

Joey Bryan FPL Assets from promoted teams
Joe Bryan the man who did it for Fulham
Predicted price: £5.0m
Playing position: LB
Appearances: 43
⚽️ 1 goal   🅰️ 7 assists
Per game:   👟 0.7 shots   🔑 1.1 KPs
🛡️ 13 clean sheets
🎨 11 big chances created

Bryan (26) looks the most appealing option from the Cottagers’ backline. His 38 shots were more than the combined 30 of the rest of the Cottagers’ regular back four. At Fulham, no one had more assists than Bryan, and only Cavaleiro and Knockaert created more big chances. He also shares corner duties.

4. Semi Ajayi   DEF   WBA

Semi Ajayi
Price: £5.0m
Playing position: CB
Appearances: 43
⚽️ 5 goals   🅰️ 0 assists
Per game:   ⛔️ 1.1 tackles   👟 3.2 clearances
🛡️ 13 clean sheets

Ajayi’s goal threat could provide FPL managers with a tempting option in defence. His 24 shots inside the penalty area were bettered by only 8 DEFs in FPL last term. Ajayi also looks a secure pick, starting 43 of their 46 matches in the Championship, more than any other Baggies defender.

Goalkeepers from promoted teams

In recent seasons, starting FPL with a £4.5m set-and-forget GKP has been the most popular strategy. The two top-scoring GKPs in 19/20, Pope and Henderson, both started the season at £4.5m. They will start the new season with higher prices, likely being £5.0m-£5.5m. This leaves just Ryan (BHA), and McCarthy (SOU) as the only starting GKPs at £4.5m, barring any price drops. The newly promoted men could provide good budget options.

FPL Goal Keepers assets from promoted teams in order of FPL appeal:

  1. Meslier         GKP   LEE
  2. Rodak          GKP   FUL
  3. Johnstone   GKP   WBA

1. Illan Meslier   GKP   LEE

FPL Assets from promoted teams Mesiler
Price: £4.5m
Appearances: 10
Per game:   ⚽️ 0.4 conceded   🧤 2.0 saves (83%)
🛡️ 7 clean sheets

Meslier (20) stepped up as Leeds’ goalkeeper during Casilla’s 8 match ban for on-pitch racial abuse. Following his 7 shut-outs from 10 games, he appears to be their new first choice between the sticks. Meslier’s 83% save percentage is also the best of all the promoted goalkeepers.

2. Marek Rodak   GKP   FUL

Marek Rodak
Price: £4.5m
Appearances: 33
Per game:   ⚽️ 1.0 conceded   🧤 3.0 saves (75%)
🛡️ 13 clean sheets

Rodak (23) had the highest saves-per-game of the promoted GKPs in 19/20. Fulham conceded 48 goals, the most of the three promoted clubs. However, they offered clean-sheet potential at home, recording 10/17 shutouts at Craven Cottage.

3. Sam Johnstone   GKP   WBA

Sam johnstone WBA
Price: £4.5m
Appearances: 46
Per game:   ⚽️ 1.0 conceded   🧤 2.4 saves (71%)
🛡️ 14 clean sheets

Johnstone (27) made the most saves of the promoted GKPs in 19/20. However, West Brom’s defensive record suggests they may not appeal to managers who prefer to rotate their picks home and away. Although they managed 14 shutouts, only 5 of them came at home.

Conclusion from the FPL Promoted Team Analysis

Depending on prices, I will likely be starting FPL 20/21 with two or three promoted players: Dallas (LEE), Mitrovic (FUL), and possibly Pereira (if he signs a permanent deal with WBA). I will be favoring Benrahma over Pereira if he is signed by a PL team, with many clubs interested.
