FPL Fixture Analysis: Four Teams With The Best Opening Fixtures to Begin 2020/21 PL Season

This blog is written by @fplssia
The fixtures for the 2020/21 FPL season have been announced and with a potential blank GW to begin the season you couldn’t have asked for a more explosive start than this with so many strategies flying around. In this blog, I’ll cover the four best teams with the best fixtures to begin the FPL 2020/21 season.

Tottenham

FPL 2020/21 Spurs
Kane and Spurs have a great set of fixtures to begin the season

Fixtures: EVE, sou, NEW, mun, WHU, bur, BHA, wba

Tottenham begins the season with one of the easiest set of fixtures among the 20 teams in the league. Above are their opening 8 games of the season – most of which aren’t particularly good defensively or offensively, facing only one team that finished in the top 6 last season in Manchester United.

They face 3 out of the 4 teams that conceded the most big chances and weren’t relegated last season (WHU, NEW, SOU) while their remaining fixtures rank in the top 10 using the same metric. This bodes well for their attackers especially Harry Kane (£10.5m) and Heung-Min Son (£9.0m). Kane had one of the best finishes to the season, having 13 shots on target and 9 big chances from GW30+ onwards, and this was shown through his 7 goals in that time.

These fixtures will also benefit their defensive assets and their best one would be Serge Aurier (£5.5m). Aurier managed 7 assists in 33 appearances in the 19/20 season with only Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Digne, and Doherty (defenders) having more despite Aurier playing fewer minutes and being cheaper this season than all four.

Wolves

Wolves FPL 2020/21
Wolves are the team to watch out for!

Fixtures: shu, MCI, whu, FUL, lee, NEW, CRY

From Wolves, Raul Jimenez (£8.5m) has been made an even better option with the fixtures that they have been given. Although their first two fixtures aren’t the easiest, their next 5 are against very weak defenses. As mentioned earlier, West Ham and Newcastle conceded the most and third-most BC, and the Mexican forward also have fixtures against newly-promoted Fulham and Leeds.

Defensively, Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) and Matt Doherty (£6.0m) are equally great players to include in your GW1 team. The attacking right wing-back had the most expected goals out of all defenders with 6.84. In comparison, the more popular and expensive Trent and Van-Dijk only had 2.98 and 3.96 respectively.

Ruben Vinagre offers a cut-price option into one of the best defenses in the league due to Jonny’s long term spell on the sidelines. His place may come under threat if Wolves go ahead and sign Ghoulam from Napoli. Both Vinagre and Doherty have points potential at both ends of the pitch and will be in many teams ahead of the GW1 deadline.

Other players that could potentially be good value are Diogo Jota (£6.5m) and Daniel Podence (£5.5m). Both aren’t currently mainstays in the starting XI but if they manage to break into Nuno’s starting team, Jota has proven in the past that he can be a great fantasy asset while Podence had an xPts (expected points) of 28 in just 287 minutes of game time.

The Best Mid-Priced Strikers To Consider For The Upcoming 2020/21 FPL Season

Arsenal

FPL 2020/21 Arsenal Fixtures
Arsenal have a great first two fixtures to begin the season

Fixtures: ful, WHU

Arsenal have the best first couple of fixtures in the league, playing Fulham away and West Ham at home. West Ham conceded 103 big chances last season which was the most in the league while Fulham conceded 102 big chances the last time they were in the Premier League and conceded the most goals as well.

Facing two of the very worst defenses in his first two games, it has become extremely difficult to avoid Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m). He was the golden boot runner-up (22 goals), takes penalties, and is Arsenal’s captain meaning that he will start 100% of games he is fit for.

After their first two fixtures, it would make sense to transfer out Aubameyang for a Manchester City or Manchester United premium midfielder as his games get significantly tougher, facing Liverpool, City, Leicester and Sheffield United in the next 4 gameweeks.

Other players to consider would be Nicolas Pepe (£8.0m) and William Saliba (£4.5m) if they can secure a start in the team.

Southampton

FPL 2020/21
Ings could be a great asset at just 8.5 Mil this season!

Fixtures: cry, TOT, bur, WBA, che, EVE, avl, NEW

In my opinion, Southampton’s best players in FPL are Danny Ings, Che Adams, Stuart Armstrong, Kyle Walker-Peters and goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. All of them have the potential to provide immense value for managers in a team that I expect to perform much better this year.

Ings will be looking to carry on from his spectacular 22 goal season, Adams and Armstrong are cheap and strong differentials while Walker-Peters and McCarthy offer a way into a team that have recently been much improved in defense.

The addition of Salisu to the Southampton team will likely improve the team further and this would be advantageous to their defensive assets. This has led me to believe that McCarthy is the best set-and-forget goalkeeper for the season.

Armstrong scored 4.63 points per game he started and if he can stay fit and perform well enough to stay in the starting XI, this results to a 38 game week total of 175.9 points. For comparison, Mahrez managed 175 points and Son got 169. This is obviously not an accurate way of predicting his season total but it gives us an idea of the potential he has as a differential.
