AllaboutFPL GW14 Review

Danny Ings

Gameweek 14 in FPL was a pretty frustrating one for most of the managers as key assets didn’t deliver. As a result, the average points for this GW is a paltry 51. Let us look into the top five talking points from GW14, interesting numbers, and our Dream team.

Better late than never for Saints:

Ings leading Saints' resurgence
Ings leading Saints’ resurgence

Southampton made an abysmal start to the season, they accumulated just 8 points from the first 12 games. The Saints though, have improved ever since the mauling at the hands of Leicester. Hassenhutl’s men have secured 4 points from the last two games. This includes an impressive comeback win against Watford this weekend.

Two men have been key in Southampton’s upturn in form in recent weeks. Danny Ings and James Ward Prowse have been absolutely sensational for the South-coast side. The former has scored 7 goals this season, with 3 of those coming in the last 3 games. While the latter has netted in 3 of his last 4 outings. Saints have a relatively winnable run of games coming up, so having one of the aforementioned is a must!

Alli is well at Tottenham again:

Alli back to his very best
Alli back to his very best

Dele Alli has been a fabulous asset for FPL managers in the past, but he has been disappointing in the last year or so. But the new manager bounce seems to have done him the world of good. Alli has by far been Spurs’ standout player Since Jose Mourinho came in to the helm. The midfielder scored a brace against Bournemouth on Saturday, goals which were typical ‘Dele Alli’ goals, dare I say!

Alli is owned by just 3.5% of managers post Gameweek 14, which is glaringly low and you have to get him in ASAP. Spurs have a relatively kind run of games coming up as well.

Fixtures: MAN UTD(A), BURNLEY(H), WOLVES(A), CHELSEA(H)

The Villains shine at the ‘theatre’

Grealish inspires Aston Villa to get a point at Old Trafford
Grealish inspires Aston Villa to get a point at Old Trafford

There were 22 players on the Old Trafford pitch on Sunday, but one man stood out. Jack Grealish was absolutely mesmerizing against the Red Devils as he scored one goal, the goal of the weekend. The Villa captain has been involved in 7 goals(3 goals 4 assists) this campaign, the second highest for an English midfielder.

Despite his magnificent form this season, Grealish is being overlooked by fantasy managers. Managers have tend to go with Mcginn in his stead, which is bizarre to say the least. The Midfielder is owned by just 4.3% of the managers, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get him in right now.

Cantwell spoils Freddie’s dream start:

Cantwell is making it a habit of scoring against 'Big 6' opposition
Cantwell is making it a habit of scoring against ‘Big 6’ opposition

Freddie Ljungberg would have wanted to get off to a winning start as Arsenal’s interim man in charge. But, Todd Cantwell and Norwich had other ideas. Indeed, you could argue that the Gunners were extremely fortunate to come away with a point. At the heart of the Canaries’ excellent performance was Todd Cantwell. The midfielder scored one goal and had two other glorious chances in the game, but Bernd Leno came to Arsenal’s rescue.

Norwich performed like the way they did at the start of the season. Teemu Pukki was a constant menace for the Arsenal defense throughout. The Finnish striker scored his goal since GW 5 on Sunday. Norwich’s fixtures are very promising, and you can’t bet against another Pukki party !!!

Fixtures: SOUTHAMPTON (A), SHEFFIELD UTD(H), LEICESTER(A), WOLVES(H), ASTON VILLA(A).

Just get in them Blades in your side:

Mousset can't stop scoring at the moment
Mousset can’t stop scoring at the moment

If you look at the fixture pile up for the next 5 gameweeks, then Sheffield Utd have the easiest of run ins. The Blades produced yet another impressive performance at Wolves on Sunday as they came away with a well earned point. Chris Wilder ‘s men are unbeaten in their last 7 matches in the league. Extraordinary !

At the forefront of things for the Blades is Lys Mousset. The Frenchman has been one of the stand out players in FPL this season. He has scored 4 goals in his last 6 games and is still owned by just 5.3% of managers. If you’re looking to triple up on Sheffield United, then having George Baldock will be a good idea, alongside Lundstram and Mousset.

Gameweek 14 IN NUMBERS:

  • With 60 points to his name, Brighton’s Mathew Ryan has more points than any other goalkeeper this season.
  • Son Heung Min has registered 8 assists this season, already matching his tally in the last two seasons.
  • Jamie Vardy was captained by 1.4 million people for GW 14, and the striker didn’t disappoint. Vardy scored his 13th goal of the season, three more than any other player.
