May 13, 2012: Football. Bloody Hell. The script couldn’t just get better than this. 380 matches, 34200 minutes of footballing action, 1066 goals, several intense derbies, various controversies. Everything came down to the final day- May 13, 2012. 90 minutes of football at Etihad ( Man City vs QPR) and Stadium of Light (Sunderland vs Man Utd) to decide the Premier League winner. Drama of ultimate type. The ‘Noisy Neighbors’ have finally reached the footballing levels of Manchester United and are competing with them neck-to-neck for the thrown of Manchester and England. We will take you back to the same day. Sit back with us and relive one of the most dramatic and historical moments in footballing history.
Pre-match Scenario:
13 May 2012, 15:00 GMT : Manchester City were in familiar territory at the Etihad Stadium taking on Queens Park Rangers. They knew that a win would secure them the league title for the first time in 44 years irrespective of what happens at Sunderland due to superior goal-difference. Manchester United were up against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Their equation was not simple. A win wouldn’t be enough for them. They also needed Manchester City to drop points on the last day for them to regain their title. In short, City had to at-least match United’s performance on the final day to win the trophy. KICK OFF!
20′ – Sunderland 0-1 Manchester United, Manchester City 0-0 Queens Park Rangers.
Champions, as it stands: Manchester United
From a deep position on the right, Phil Jones delivers a delightful cross to the far post. Wayne Rooney is there to head it home past Mignolet. The English veteran has put United two points clear at the top. As it stands, Manchester United are on track to their 20th title. Meanwhile, City hog majority of possession against QPR but were not able to create any big chances so far. Slowly the pressure is climbing up on Manchester City.
39′- Manchester City 1-0 Queens Park Rangers, Sunderland 0-1 Manchester United.
Champions, as it stands: Manchester City
David Silva slips a pass into the area for Toure, who puts into the path of Zabaleta on the right. Zabaleta, the fan favorite has a clear sight at goal has a crack and scores through a deflection from keeper Paddy Kenny. The least expected Manchester City player has just scored to take them closer to history. Manchester United are still winning at Stadium of Light, but it doesn’t matter at this moment.
Half time – Man City vs QPR 1-0, Sunderland vs Man Utd 0-1.
Champions, as it stands: Manchester City
Only 45 minutes separate Manchester City and Premier League trophy. This is Manchester City’s title to lose. They just need to hold on to a 1-0 lead at home to a 18th placed team in the league. Sounds easy? But it is not meant to be. Manchester City were just known to crumble under pressure over the years. To make it more anxious, Yaya Toure was subbed off just before half-time for De Jong after he pulled his hamstring.
48′- Manchester City 1-1 Queens Park Rangers, Sunderland 0-1 Manchester United.
Champions, as it stands : Manchester United
Shaun Wright Phillips, the former Manchester City winger lobs a hopeful ball into the area. Lescott has just made the worst decision in his footballing career. Despite being 20 yards away from goal, Lescott tries to head it towards the keeper. The ball goes only as far as Djibril Cisse, who scores with an excellent finish.
55′ – 1-1 Man City vs QPR Joey Barton does what he does best with some aplomb.
Entertaining, drama-filled day without Joey Barton? NO! Never! He decides to press the self-destruct button. He was caught by the linesman to have elbowed Carlos Tevez in his face. Barton was rightly sent-off by Mike Dean. But Barton doesn’t stop there. He goes absolutely crazy, knees Sergio Aguero up the backside and then tries to headbutt Vincent Kompany. Perhaps the troubled midfielder has given the Citizens hope. Its simple now. Attack vs Defense. Fans could vividly remember the famous night in Champions League game between Barcelona and Chelsea which happened just two weeks before this game. All City need to do now is score a goal against 10-man QPR in 35 minutes to win the Premier League.
66′- Manchester City 1-2 Queens Park Rangers, Sunderland 0-1 Manchester United.
Champions, as it stands : Manchester United
“It is TYPICAL CITY!” calls out Martin Tyler on air. City have possibly done the most City thing possible here. Totally against the run of play. Armand Traore who had come on just minutes before skips past Zabaleta and sends in a cross to Jamie Mackie who heads it in to leave City fans in tears. Manchester City need to score two goals in 24 minutes to win the game and silverware. Mancini has thrown in strikers Dzeko, Balotelli in a last ditch attempt to attack. Meanwhile, United are comfortably holding on to a 1-0 lead and are certainly thinking about No.20 and giving Berbatov a farewell to remember. Some City fans at the stadium couldn’t hide their emotions, in tears have started to leave the stadium.
90+1′ – Manchester City 2-2 Queens Park Rangers, Sunderland 0-1 Manchester United.
Champions, as it stands : Manchester United
Football. Bloody Hell! David Silva puts in a corner for the 19th time on the evening. For once, substitute Edin Dzeko is there to head the corner home. DRAMA! Drama of the ultimate type! City have struck in ‘Fergie Time’ ‘Mancini Time’. Hope. Glimmer of hope for the City faithfuls. A minute after this goal, Manchester United have completed their 1-0 victory. United are 120 seconds away from making it official. Some of the United players have already started celebrating.
93:20′ -Manchester City 3-2 Queens Park Rangers, Sunderland 0-1 Manchester United.
Champions, as it stands : Manchester City
Manchester City are still alive here. Baloteliii. Agueroooooooooooooo. I swear you never see anything like this ever again. So watch it, drink it in. They have just heard the news at the Stadium of Light. Two goals in added time from Manchester City to snatch the title away from Manchester United. Stupendous. The greatest moment I have seen in Premier League football. Unbelievable.

The moment couldn’t be more better described than Martin Tyler. Manchester City have won the league in the most staggering way. Aguero draws back to collect the ball from Kompany. Then, plays a little one-two with Balotelli, skips past a challenge before smashing it past Kenny. Aguero wins the league title for City in possibly the last kick of the league.
“It is the agony. It is the rule of football. Before the ecstasy, there has to be a period of agony.” City went through 44 years of agony, 22 managerial changes, 5 relegation and 5 promotions to witness this moment of ecstasy. It is probably worth the wait. The blue moon has risen. Just like a dream in City fan’s hearts. Manchester City are champions and they did in the most unbelievable fashion. Football! Bloody Hell!
