FPL Premium Forwards Analysis

Erling Haaland – Manchester City – 14.0 Million

FPL Premium Forwards Analysis - Haaland

    Pros:

    • Haaland hit 22 Goals and got 3 Assists in an injury-hit campaign where he started 31 Games. By his standards, it was an average season. Yet in an average season, he is still City’s main goal threat, and his 42 % Goal Involvement for City proves that. He is a very tempting differential Captaincy option in most Gameweeks, with Salah & Palmer being the popular premium options.
    • Haaland had an xG of 21.94 and an xA of 2.09. His stats related to Goal threat were as excellent as ever, with 60 Shots on Target and 98 Shots in the Box. He also got 41 Big Chances, and with City adding some more quality attacking options this season, Haaland could thrive and easily hit 30+ Goals this season.
    • Haaland tends to start the season with a bang, and with fixtures against Wolves, Spurs, Brighton, Manchester United, and Burnley, he could get off to a great start yet again. Also on penalties & likely to be the only City attacker who plays the most minutes.

    Cons:

    • His price is a bit off-putting after his record last season, and with most going for a duo of Palmer & Salah and filling up their squads with the Mid-Priced forwards, Haaland may remain a Differential until he explodes at the beginning of the season.

Alexander Isak – Newcastle United – 10.5 Million

FPL Premium Forwards Analysis - Isak

      Pros:

      • The Forward who scored the most goals in the League last season, with 23 Goals and 6 Assists, is perhaps the best forward in the League in terms of football and FPL (because of his price difference to Haaland). If Isak moves to Liverpool, he will become an even better FPL option, in my opinion. He will lose penalties, but he will get a lot of chances to perhaps even score 30 Goals in a season.
      • Isak had an xG of 20.32 and an xA of 3.62. His stats related to Goal threat were as excellent with 46 Shots on Target and 84 Shots in the Box. He also got 36 Big Chances. His xA was the best among Forwards last season as he created 11 Big Chances for his teammates.

      Cons:

      • Until his future is sorted, it’s better to avoid Isak for the time being. Once his future is finalized, he will definitely enter the FPL conversation, whether he is at Liverpool or at Newcastle. For now, he is an avoid, but a definite pick-up in the future.

Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa – 9.0 Million

FPL Premium Forwards Analysis - Watkins

        Pros:

        • Consistent and reliable. That is Ollie Watkins for you. He has scored 10+ Goals in all of his 5 seasons in the Premier League. He outscored Haaland in terms of FPL points in the last 2 seasons. Nailed on to start every game, possibly on penalties, Watkins is a great FPL asset to start the season. He has also been on fire in the Pre-season and looks really sharp.
        • Watkins had an xG of 15.18 and an xA of 2.08. His stats related to Goal threat were excellent, with 40 Shots on Target and 81 Shots in the Box. He also got 40 Big Chances. Watkins also picks up a lot of assists compared to other Forwards as he has got 8, 18, and 8 Assists in his last 3 seasons.
        • Villa have the best attacking fixtures in the 1st 8 Gameweeks with games against Brentford, Everton, Palace, Sunderland, Fulham, Burnley, and Spurs. Watkins could take advantage of this run and get off to a fast start.
        • Pre-season form: 4 goals and 1 assist, with four goals in four consecutive games

        Cons:

        • Villa’s lack of attacking options could lead to over-reliance on Rogers and Watkins for goals. The Injury Rogers picked up in pre-season could be one to monitor.

        Viktor Gyokeres – Arsenal – 9.0 Million

FPL Premium Forwards Analysis - Gyokres

          Pros:

          • The calibre of the player is massive. He has scored 97 Goals and got 27 Assists in only 102 Games for Sporting Lisbon. A ruthless finisher, he resembles Haaland as a proven goalscorer and a brilliant finisher.
          • He is brilliant at penalties, having scored 34 out of 38 penalties in his career (a great record of 89%). He could take penalties away from Saka, and the 1 million price difference between them could make him the more popular FPL option.

          Cons:

          • Lack of a proper pre-season and Havertz looking much more sharper in pre-season could mean he gets into the Starting 11 gradually and not from Gameweek 1. Although Havertz missed the game vs Villareal and only made the bench in their last friendly against Athletic Club. Gyokres scored his first Arsenal goal in this game!
          • Arsenal’s start to the season is not good, with tough games against Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Manchester United should give us time to assess Gyokeres and probably jump on him when Arsenal’s fixtures turn from Gameweek 7.

          Hugo Ekitike – Liverpool – 8.5 Million

FPL Premium Forwards Analysis - Ekitike

            Pros:

            • Ekitike joins Liverpool, the team that scored the most goals (86) and registered the highest xG (81.76) in the League last season. He scored 15 Goals and got 8 Assists for Frankfurt last season.
            • His underlying stats are good with an xG of 21.6 and an xA of 6.8. He suits the Firmino role quite well and can contribute with both goals and assists. If he can improve his finishing, he could be an all-around excellent player for Liverpool.
            • He can also play on the Left side and could compete with Gakpo if Isak signs for Liverpool. If he gets regular starts, he could become an excellent value pick for his price.

            Cons:

            • His finishing could and should improve as he underachieved his xG by quite a lot. Competition for the forward spots always remains a concern for Liverpool, and he may take some time to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League.

Jarrod Bowen – West Ham – 8.0 Million

FPL Premium Forwards Analysis - Bowen

              Pros:

              • Another Mr. Consistent pick is Jarrod Bowen. He has scored 13, 16, 6, and 12 Goals in the last 4 seasons and got 11, 6, 9, and 17 assists in these seasons, respectively. If that’s not reliable, not sure what is!!
              • Bowen starts with a great fixture against Sunderland, and you can be sure he will be a nailed-on starter in every Gameweek and is called Mr. West Ham for a reason.
              • Bowen had an xG of 8.92 and an xA of 6.47. His stats related to Goal threat were excellent, with 37 Shots on Target, 62 Shots in the Box, and 15 big chances. He created 11 Big Chances for his teammates. He even got 6 Def-cons and perhaps could chip in during some games. He is also a Bonus Point monster. Has been on fire in Pre-season(2 goals and 2 assists)

Bowen’s consistent run towards the end of last season:

              • GW38: ⚽🅰️, 13 points
              • GW37: ⚽, 8 points
              • GW36: ⚽, 8 points
              • GW35: ⚽, 9 points
              • GW34: 🅰️🅰️, 10 points
              • GW33: ⚽, 9 points

              Cons:

              • The fixtures from Gameweek 2 to 7 are against solid defensive sides, and it could be difficult for Bowen to continue his excellent run, which he had at the end of last season.
              • West Ham lack the creativity & attacking threat, and unless they sign another creative player, Bowen could find himself isolated and too much to do (after Kudus’ departure)

Pre-season will also tell us more about all of these picks, and fixtures will ultimately help us to decide who to begin with. But for now, in the Premium Forwards, my Top 3 ranking would be –

              1. Ollie Watkins (9)
              2. Erling Haaland (14)
              3. Jarrod Bowen (8)
