Welcome to our FPL GW34 Scout Picks blog! With only 5 GWs left of the season, it’s time to lock in… This week our Scout Picks team will be sticking fairly closely to the Free Hit template team that many managers will be using this GW in an attempt to make the most of the BGW. A reminder that this week Arsenal, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace all BLANK, so if you do still have your FH chip available – USE IT!
We managed a decent 71 points in DGW33, but it was not enough to beat the Official FPL Scout Picks team, which managed an enormous 90 points! That being said, we still have a comfortable lead over them going into the final few weeks of the season.

FPL GW34 Scout Picks
FPL GW34 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper

Leno (5.0m) takes his place in net for the AAFPL Scout Picks team for FPL GW34, with Fulham facing an already relegated Southampton side. Fulham have conceded the third fewest expected goals against behind just Liverpool and Arsenal, a stat which highlights how well organized and defensively competent they are as a side. Expected goals against is a great measure of a side’s defensive ability, far better than pure goals against or clean sheets, and Fulham have been top 3 in this metric for most of the season.

While their form is patchy (at best), this weekend’s fixture against bottom of the league Southampton provides the Cottagers with the perfect opportunity to get back to winning ways, following their two consecutive defeats to Chelsea and Bournemouth.
In the reverse fixture earlier this season, Fulham limited the Saints to just 0.28xG and 1 shot on target, holding the away side to a 0-0 draw. Silva’s side will be hoping to do one better this time around whilst hopefully maintaining that CS! Southampton have nothing to play for other than pride at this point, having equaled Derby’s record points total of 11 in last week’s round of games – they are well and truly on the beach…

FPL GW34 Scout Picks – Defenders

Sessegnon (4.1m), RAN (5.0m) and Livramento (4.6m) make up our backline for FPL GW34!
Everything written about Leno also applies to Sessegnon with regards to Fulham’s defensive capabilities and the favourable matchup against Southampton in FPL GW34. Sessegnon, however, has the added bonus of being an out-of-position FPL asset, starting games in recent weeks on the right wing. The talented english winger has started all of Fulham’s last three premier league matches, scoring one goal and providing one assist across those three matches.

Having played much of his career as a full-back / wing-back for different clubs across the continent, Sessegnon has finally re-settled in London with his former employers Fulham! He’s recently been deployed higher up the pitch, alongside Iwobi and Jiminez, in the front three, but remains listed as a defender in FPL, making him a very VERY valuable asset. Robinson can also be considered, as he is arguably more secure of an option minutes wise, but on a FH, I like the look of Sessegnon!
Next up is FPL fan favourite Ait-Nouri! The Wolves defender scored a brilliant volley to put his side 1-0 up against Spurs in GW32, setting his team off on their way to a comfortable 4-2 victory over the London side. That was actually his 10th goal involvement for the season, having scored 4 and provided 6 assists so far this campaign – it’s clear why FPL managers love him!

Wolves have been much improved in recent weeks and are currently on a 5 gameweek WIN streak! They’ve kept two clean sheets in that stretch, with RAN’s points tally reaching 31 points in that period (6.2PPG). Wolves are a great side to target this week due to their recent form, the amazing run they’re on and their fixture against Leicester, who, like Southampton, are already relegated…
Completing the defense we have Newcastle’s Tino Livramento. The Magpies succumbed to defeat against Villa in FPL GW33, in what proved to be a game of ridiculously high quality! That loss put an end to their own win streak, which to that point totaled 5 games. Livramento has been excellent since migrating over to the left side of defense in the absence of Lewis Hall, but has left a lot to be desired in an attacking sense, having provided just 1 assist all season.

His attacking stats aren’t great, but at this point in the season we’re looking for players with secure minutes – and Livramento is definitely in that category. Newcastle will likely look to rotate some of their starting XI this weekend, as they looked fairly tired in the second half against Villa, and arguably lost the game because of their fatigue, but we’re confident that, due to their lack of depth at fullback, and Livramento’s recent performances at LB, that he’ll retain his place! Howe’s side face Ipswich at home, a side who, despite not yet being mathematically relegated, have very little to play for themselves, and who already look to be preparing for life back in the Championship…

FPL GW34 Scout Picks – Midfielders

Our midfield quintet is made up of Mo Salah (13.8m), Palmer (10.6m), Diaz (7.5m), Barnes (6.0m) and Mbeumo (8.0m) for FPL GW34!
Salah retains his place in the team (surprise surprise), with Liverpool teammate Luis ‘Lucho’ Diaz joining him for FPL GW34. If you’ve watched any of Tottenham’s recent performances in the Premier League, you’ll understand why we’ve decided to double up on Liverpool attackers; the London side have conceded 10 goals in their last 5 matches, with their only win (in the last 5) coming against Southampton… They were comically poor against Wolves, and while they put in a decent showing against Forest, it’s not enough to convince me that they’ll be able to keep Liverpool quiet for a full 90.
Earlier this season Liverpool put 6 past Spurs, in what turned out to be a very entertaining game. With Trent Alexander-Arnold back, Salah will be afforded much more space than he has been in recent weeks, hopefully boosting his attacking numbers back up. The Egyptian put in a great performance against Leicester last weekend, taking 7 shots in the box, and spurning 4 big chances (over 1xG!), as well as creating 0.59xA worth of chances for his teammates. He was unlucky to come away with nothing… Due to Spurs’ comically bad defending, and their recent run of form and Salah’s uptick due to Trent’s return – he’s our captain for FPL GW34.

As I mentioned before, we’re looking for secure minutes, and Lucho is perhaps the most secure of any Liverpool attacker outside of Salah, making him the most appealing option for FPL GW34. Nunez and Chiesa seem to be out of favour with Slot, while Gakpo and Jota are often rotated making Lucho the best asset outside of Salah. Gakpo and Jota’s underlying numbers are higher than Diaz’s, but as we don’t know which one will start, we’ve gone for Lucho.
PS – If we get news that Jota/Nunez is likely to start then I’d go for one of them, as their underlying numbers are far higher and Spurs tend to give up a lot of chances down the middle, but if we don’t (we likely won’t) then stick with Lucho!

Palmer returns to the team after a fairly long absence. His numbers continue to decline steadily, with the England midfielder producing just 3 assists in the last 10 in the Premier League, far below his normal output. Over the last 5 games he’s been averaging just 0.38xG and 0.2xA per 90, almost half of what he was averaging last season and at the start of this one – he’s clearly low on confidence, BUT has been showing some signs of improvement in the last couple of matches. Against Ipswich in FPL GW32 he managed 6 shots and 4 key passes, but came home with just the 1 assist to show for it – the signs are there, so we’re backing him to haul against Everton!
We’re cheating on Jacob Murphy with his Newcastle teammate Harvey Barnes this week (no relation to John Barnes) due to his elevated underlying numbers and recent performances. Barnes is averaging 0.46xG and 0.25xA per 90 this campaign compared to Murphy’s 0.28xG/90 and 0.35xA/90 – Barnes marginally better when it comes to underlying numbers, though it must be pointed out that his sample size is far smaller having played far fewer minutes than ex-Sheffield Wednesday man Jacob Murphy…

Barnes has managed to rack up 9 goals and 4 assists in just over 1000 minutes for Newcastle in the league this season, equating to a goal involvement approximately every 86 minutes! That’s a great rate of return, and it’s no surprise that he’s managed to retain his place in the team despite Gordon’s return. We’re sorry to be turning our back on the new QEBE Murphy, but couldn’y ignore Barnes recent form – let’s just hope he starts…

Finally we have Bryan Mbeumo. The Brentford Talisman has also been in excellent for lately, picking up 2 goals and 1 assist against Brighton in FPL GW33. FUN FACT: Mbeumo’s second goal against Brighton was his first Left Footed goal in the league this season! The winger has continued a steady rate of return, providing 8 goals and assists in his last 10 premier league games.
This week the Bees are up against Forest, who have struggled to keep clean sheets of late, conceding late on against both Spurs and Everton. The City Ground is no longer the fortress it once was, and though Forest possible have more to play for than Brentford, Mbeumo is a big game player – so we’re backing him!

FPL GW34 Scout Picks – Forwards

A front two of Isak (9.6m) and Strand Larsen (5.4m) completes the team!
The strategy of targeting promoted teams has worked for us so far this season, so, if it ain’t broke… Newcastle have scored 3+ in 3 of their last 4 premier league matches, so we thought it wise to include not one, but two of their attackers for FPL GW34! The Magpies managed to put 4 past Ipswich earlier this season, and the Tractor boys have conceded 3+ goals in 10 of their 33 games so far this season (the same as Southampton) – so we’re betting on another high scoring game…

Isak is averaging over 0.7xG/90 this season, and while he has been slightly out of form in recent weeks, with Barnes and Murphy taking much of the limelight, he remains a super valuable FPL asset. He’ll likely finish 2nd highest scorer in the league (due to Haaland’s injury), highlighting just what a brilliant season he’s had. The Magpies have a fairly decent fixture run between now and the end of the season, with Arsenal the only ‘difficult fixture’ (though by GW37 they will more than likely be on the beach) so he remains a great pick!
We’ve gone for Larsen over Cunha for a number of reasons, but the main one is form. Larsen has scored 5 goals in his last 5 matches, blanking in just one, and was a revelation in the absence of Cunha. He was kept fairly quiet by United last weekend, and will be looking to bounce back strong against already relegated Leicester City this weekend.

As I’ve written many times, Leicester are pretty hopeless defensively, and haven’t kept a clean sheet in 26 matches in the league, with their last one coming against Bournemouth at the start of October! Therefore we can suggest confidently that Wolves attackers are a good choice for FPL GW34! Cunha is a decent option too, but we’re backing Larsen due to his form and his underlying numbers (which are actually better than Cunha’s anyway!)
