Welcome to our FPL GW28 Scout Picks blog! As we head into Gameweek 28 of the Fantasy Premier League season it’s important to remember that GW29 is a blank GW, with Liverpool, Palace, Newcastle and Villa – so plan accordingly! This week is a ‘normal’ GW however, so let us waste no time in diving straight into the scout picks… Unfortunately we lost again to the official FPL scout picks team in GW27, losing out by just 3 points, meaning our lead shrinks to a (still fairly comfortable) 16-11 going into the final 11 GWs of the season…

FPL GW28 Fixtures

FPL GW28 Scout Picks
FPL GW28 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper

Liverpool will host Southampton in Gameweek 28, a fixture that presents a great opportunity for Alisson to rack up his already excellent points tally! Alisson (5.5m) has been a reliable presence in goal for Liverpool this season, making some crucial stops in some big games. The Reds have kept 12 clean sheets (best ITL) this season and have conceded an xGA of just 27.72 (2nd best ITL).

Southampton, on the other hand, have struggled in attack, and their performances all season have demonstrated a lack of cutting edge in front of goal. We all know by now that targeting promoted sides is key, and with Liverpool’s attackers almost all available, rotation is a concern – meaning that doubling up on their defense is perhaps the most sensible strategy. VVD is more expensive than Alisson and Konate lacks goal threat, so for us Ali is the ideal choice.
A stat which surprised me is that Alisson actually has the highest points per match of any goalkeeper in FPL (‘keepers that have played 15+ games) – he’s been going under the radar a bit as an FPL pick, but at just 5.5m he should not be overlooked!

FPL GW28 Scout Picks – Defenders

We’re sticking with the same back line that served us so well in FPL GW27, with Munoz (5.0m), Trent (7.4m) and Cucu (5.1m) all retaining their places in the team!
Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of the standout defenders in FPL this season, and his attacking contributions are a big reason why. With a match-up against Southampton, a side who have both struggled to score (fewest goals scored ITL) and defend (most goals conceded ITL), Trent is a must-have for FPL GW28. The right-back has provided 6 assists and 2 goals this season and has been a constant threat going forward, regularly creating chances for his teammates. His xA of 0.33 per 90 minutes illustrates his point scoring potential – and he’s not shy about taking a shot from range either!

With his versatility, creativity, and a favorable matchup at Anfield, Alexander-Arnold is one of the best FPL picks for Gameweek 28.
Daniel Munoz is becoming an increasingly popular FPL pick, and I must say – I told you so! At the start of the season I had him as one of my top FPL picks due to his price and underlying numbers, and he is finally being acknowledged as a key FPL asset (sitting currently at 12% ownership). Palace face Ipswich at home in Gameweek 28, a matchup that could see Munoz deliver both defensively and offensively.

Though Munoz is principally a ‘defender’, he’s also contributed to Palace’s attack, with 3 goals and 4 assists so far this season. Ipswich are always a team to target, particularly away from home, and although they were unlucky not to get a result against United in GW27, Crystal Palace are a completely different kettle of fish… 2 attacking returns and 1 clean sheet in his last 3 Premier league matches is an outstanding run of form that he and Palace will be hoping can continue!
Marc Cucurella has been one of Chelsea’s more consistent defenders this season. With Chelsea set to host Leicester City in Gameweek 28, clean sheets and attacking returns are both on the cards… The Spaniard has contributed scored in FPL GW27, providing his lucky (or clever) owners with his highest single GW points total of the season so far – 15 points!

While Chelsea have been inconsistent in recent weeks, their fans will be hoping that their comfortable win against Southampton offered them a chance to reset, and that another fixture at home against a promoted side this GW will give them the perfect opportunity to build slowly into the final third of the PL season. Leicester have scored the second fewest goals in the league and haven’t scored in any of their last 4 premier league matches. In fact, in their last 4, they have managed to create more than 0.5xG on just one occasion (against Brentford)! They are arguably in the worst form of any team in the league at the moment, so backing Chelsea defense is a pretty safe bet (touch wood)…

FPL GW28 Scout Picks – Midfielders

Our midfield this week consists of many familiar faces – Mbeumo (8.0m), Palmer (11.1m), Kluivert (6.1m), Eze (6.7m) and Salah (13.8m) all make the team for FPL GW28!
Eberechi Eze has has really grown into the 24/25 season, and his (and Palace’s) form makes him a great pick for Gameweek 28. The Eagles face Ipswich at home, a fixture that could offer Eze plenty of opportunities to add to his tally of 2 goals and 6 assists. Eze has been central to Palace’s attack this season, regularly drifting into dangerous areas and creating chances for his teammates, and with Mateta likely out due to a head injury sustained in the cup in midweek, Eze’s teammates may well look to him to provide that spark and be the difference maker.

Not only is Eze a threat from open play, but he’s also a set-piece taker for Palace, and his ability to deliver dangerous free-kicks and corners adds to his FPL appeal. Ipswich’s defensive weaknesses should allow Eze to thrive, as his dribbling and vision will be key in breaking down their backline which often sits fairly deep. While his underlying numers are inferior to Sarr’s, Eze possesses the ability to make something out of nothing and is arguably Palace’s talisman, particularly in the absence of Mateta – so for GW28, we’re backing him!
Bryan Mbeumo has been in fantastic form for Brentford this season and is one of the most consistent FPL assets in recent weeks, bagging 3 goal involvements in his last 3 PL matches. In Gameweek 28, Brentford host Aston Villa, and Mbeumo will be looking to exploit a side which may well be tired from their mid-week trip to Belgium… Mbeumo has been Brentford’s main attacking threat this season, and while Wissa has taken the spotlight from him recently, he remains (in my opinion) the better option of the two due to his status as a midfielder and his over-performance (highlighting how in-form he is this year).

His all-around contributions make him more than just a goal scorer – he’s often involved in creating chances for his teammates, demonstrated by his 7.76xA (0.29xA/90). While Wissa is a tempting option for many managers due to the concerns around Mateta, Cunha, Isak and co. Mbeumo is our Brentford pick for FPL GW28.
Cole Palmer has another fixture against a promoted side in FPL GW28, and will be hoping to build upon his encouraging performance in GW27. While his captainers will be disappointed with his single attacking return due to his ridiculously high underlying numbers from the game against Southampton, they should not be deterred from holding him this week. Let us not forget that Palmer has contributed 14 goals and 6 assists in 27 games this season…

Leicester’s defensive struggles have been well-documented this season, with the Foxes conceding 61 goals, only 4 fewer than Southampton. Furthermore, the Foxes have been in awful form, conceding 4 goals in 2 of their last 4 matches. With uncertainty surrounding Chelsea’s other attacking assets (though Neto is a great pick if confirmed to start ie. if Jackson’s not back), Palmer is the obvious choice, and an easy hold for FPL GW28.
Salah owners may feel similarly perturbed by the Egyptian’s solitary goal involvement in FPL GW28, but never fear – Liverpool face Southampton this weekend! With a fixture against one of the worst sides in Premier League history (at home) in GW28, he’s a top contender for the captaincy alongside Palmer – for us Salah just edges it… Southampton’s 65 goals conceded paints a bleak picture, and with Liverpool on the hunt for ‘Number 20’, and keen to not build upon their 2 most recent positive results, Salah is a must have for this GW.

Justin Kluivert has been a revalation for Iraola’s side this year and will be looking to continue his strong performances when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 28. Kluivert’s pace and dribbling ability make him a constant threat, couple that with Bournemouth’s high energy verticality and Spurs may well struggle to contain him! So far this season, Kluivert has contributed 12 goals and 5 assists, and is more nailed than the likes of Outtara (who has better underlying numbers but may well be benched for Evanlison).

Tottenham have been in better form recently, with their 3 match win streak coming to an end at the hands of Manchester City, while Bournemouth have suffered two successive defeats for the first time since November! The Cherries will be looking to bounce back from their recent poor results, and the talismanic Kluivert could be central to their renaissance…

FPL GW28 Scout Picks – Forwards

Our front two this week is made up of two differential picks – Nketiah (5.9m) and Marmoush (7.2m).
With Mateta out injured for this fixture, Nketiah will likely take his place in the team, making him a great FPL option for GW28. As mentioned, Palace face Ipswich, so targeting their players is imperative, and while doubling up on their defense is perhaps the most optimal strategy we’ve gone for an attacking double up for a number of reasons.
Liverpool’s attackers will likely be rotated, but tripling up on Redmen was essential, therefore we picked Ali in goal, TAA and Salah as our triple up. With Chelsea facing Leicester, the most out of form side in the league, it was also crucial to go for one of their defenders, leaving no space for a defensive double-up for Palace. While Sarr is a decent FPL option, we wanted to try something different, and have thus gone for Nketiah this week.

The englishman is actually in decent form, scoring his first PL goal for his new club against Villa in GW27 and scoring again in midweek against Milwall after replacing the injured Mateta. Against a side like Ipswich, Nketiah should have multiple opportunities to test the goalkeeper and hopefully find the back of the net. Palace have generally been strong at home, and Ipswich may well struggle to contain them considering their recent form. His role as the focal point of Palace’s attack, coupled with the favorable fixture, makes him a top choice, a great differential (0.7% TSB) for those of you behind in mini-leagues, and a decent short term punt for FPL GW28.
Finally we have Marmoush. Retaining his place in the AAFPL Scout Picks team despite having blanked in GW28 shows just how much faith we have in the Egyptian. As pointed out in last weeks post, his underlying numbers are exceptional considering his price, and with City’s upcoming fixtures he could be a great pick for the final 10 games of the season.
I recently wrote a more in depth post about him on my substack (read here), in which I compared his numbers to other FPL forwards at similar price points… (green = top 3, yellow = middle 3, orange = bottom 3). He comes out pretty well when compared to other similarly priced forwards in FPL. This weekend City face Forest away from home in the early kick-off, a challenge for sure, but one that they are capable of surmounting.

City created over 2xG against Spurs in GW28, and with more and more of their players returning to full fitness it may well be time to start looking at them again… Forest on the other hand have struggled since their 7-0 victory in GW24 – they’re winless in 3 and have conceded 6 goals across those three games. While they did manage to contain an Arsenal side that put 7 past PSV in the subsequent game, it looks like their incredible form from the start of the season is starting to fade as more and more teams ‘figure them out’.
