FPL GW27 Scout Picks Based on Stats, Analysis, and Matchups

Welcome to our FPL GW27 Scout Picks blog! Though GW26 has only just ended, FPL GW27 is just one day away, with midweek fixtures taking place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week! The AAFPL Scout Picks team had a solid return of 78 points last GW, with Trent, Mitoma and the Brentford triple-up coming in clutch! In spite of their returns, we still fell 2 points short of the official PL Scout’s total of 80 points… Hopefully, we can bounce back with some big returns from some interesting differentials in FPL GW27, and make it 17-10 going into the final 10 GWs of the season!

Sels (5.0m) makes his long-awaited return to the team, as Forest face Arsenal at home in FPL GW27. The Tricky Trees have been somewhat out of form of late, losing 2-1 to Fulham in GW25 and then 4-3 to Newcastle in GW26. In fact, in their last 5 matches in the prem, they’ve conceded 13 goals! Therefore it may seem strange for us to pick their goalie for the upcoming round of fixtures, especially considering their opponents are none other than title-chasing Arsenal – let me explain.

Arsenal are attacker-less, and have been struggling over the past 2 matches to score goals. They were poor for 70 minutes against Leicester, creating very little until Merino’s introduction. Arteta then tried to replicate the same trick against West Ham, and it failed, with Merino having the fewest touches of any player in that game, losing the most duels and managing just 2 shots (0.23xG).

Sels Forest

Arsenal tried again and again to pick out Merino in the box, putting in cross after cross (30 total) against a team who thrive in that kind of environment. If they try the same against Forest, another team who are great at defending their box, it will likely end in a similar result…

West Ham’s keeper Areola was forced into just 2 saves against Arsenal in GW26, while Hermansen (Leicester’s goalie) had to make just 3 in GW25. Arsenal are low on confidence, particularly after Liverpool’s result against City, and they may well be frustrated again, as they were by West Ham, by Forest in FPL GW27.

FPL GW27 Scout Picks – Defenders

FPL GW27 Scout Picks - Defenders

Trent (7.4m) is the only defender to keep his place in the team from last week, with Munoz (4.9m) and Cucurella (5.1m) coming in to complete our defensive unit for FPL GW27!

Trent returned another 6 points, making it just 1 blank in his last 7 matches for the Liverpudlian. While the performance against City on Sunday was perhaps not his best from a defensive point of view, with Doku beating him time and time again, he played his part in an excellent team defensive showing, limiting Pep’s side to 0 big chances and just 0.56xG, their lowest xG total in a premier league game all season.

It’s essential to have at least one Liverpool defender at the moment and Trent is by far the best option due to his attacking threat. 2 goals and 6 assists for the season so far is impressive – he has also hit the woodwork on multiple occasions and has created more chances than any other defender. The last time they played Newcastle he came off the bench and picked up two assists, and considering Newcastle have been conceding goals at a fairly high rate in recent weeks, I wouldn’t be surprised if he manages another couple of attacking returns this time around!

Daniel Munoz rewarded his FPL owners with a huge 13-point haul in FPL GW26, helping his side to a clean sheet and scoring an excellent goal (+2 bonus points). That makes it 3 attacking returns and 2 clean sheets in his last 4 premier league games – an outstanding run of form for a player who costs under 5m (at the time of writing). 3 goals and 4 assists puts him up there with Trent (8GI) and Robinson (10GI) as one of the most prolific defenders in the league – his expected goal involvement per 90 (0.36xGI/90) is actually higher than Robinson’s (0.16xGI/90) and not far off Trent’s (0.39xGI/90)!

Munoz fpl

Palace’s defensive record has been getting better in recent weeks, especially away from home – with 4 clean sheets in their last 6 premier league matches (all 4 away from home). While Villa will definitely pose different challenges to Fulham, I could definitely see Palace frustrating them. Villa have scored the joint 4th fewest goals away from home this season, and pick up far fewer points when travelling than they do at home – Glasner’s side will definitely fancy their chances against them.

Finally, we have Cucurella. Chelsea’s struggles in recent weeks have been well publicized, with the majority of their issues born out of a lack of a fit center forward. Jackson is integral to the way they play, and without him, Maresca has been forced to tweak his system and has even looked to play Palmer as a center forward at times…

Cucurella Chelsea

Their defense has suffered in this time, but a favorable fixture against relegation-threatened Southampton is the perfect opportunity for the Blues to bounce back, with the Saints falling to another defeat against Brighton in FPL GW26. In 3 of their last 4 games, they’ve created less than 1xG, and against Brighton, the Saints managed just 0.15xG over the course of the 90. They remain the worst attacking side in the league, having scored just 19 goals, 5 fewer than the next lowest-scoring team. They have the 3rd lowest xG total, and are creeping ever closer to being bottom in that metric too…

FPL GW27 Scout Picks – Midfielders

FPL GW27 Scout Picks - Midfielders

Our midfield 5 is made up of Salah (13.7m), Mbeumo (8.0m), Palmer (11.1m), Outtara (5.2m) and Bowen (7.3m)…

Salah and Palmer are locks for this week, considering the form of the former and the fixture of the latter, the question on everyone’s mind is – who to captain? Form vs. Fixture, Safety vs. Punt etc. We’ve gone for Salah, so let me explain why…

Salah’s numbers are ridiculous, and he’s still very much a man in form. He faces Newcastle at Home this week, a team who Liverpool scored 3 against earlier in the season, and one that has conceded a whopping 14 goals in their last 5 matches. Liverpool on the other hand are going into this game coming off the back of a huge victory against current champions Manchester City, and will be looking to capitalize on Arsenal’s poor run of form. The Egyptian has not blanked since GW22, and since that blank has picked up 10 attacking returns. Decent fixture, decent team form, and great personal form – a safe pick for captaincy this week.

Palmer on the other hand is in bad form – 1 attacking return in his last 5 games is far from ideal. His underlying numbers suggest that he is perhaps slightly unlucky not to have had at least one more (2.37xGI in that time), but the expected data is still not great. The real issue is Chelsea’s lack of a striker, and the fact that Moresca keeps changing his system and personnel to try and find a combination that works in Jackson’s absence. Palmer has often been the casualty of these changes, altering his position on the pitch and role from game to game. Therefore, though the fixture is excellent, his personal form, the team’s form, and the fact that we don’t know where/what role he’ll play means that he comes in 2nd place for captaincy this week.

Onto the more interesting options, starting with Mbeumo! A goal, an assist, a CS, and 3 bonus points resulted in a huge 14-point haul for Brentford’s star man in FPL GW27 – well done to those who captained him! I’ve pointed out time and time again that he is over-performing his underlying numbers by a lot, so I won’t bore you with the stats again, let us instead focus on the positives.

The Cameroon international has scored 15 goals and produced 4 assists in 26 matches so far this season, a tally only bettered by 5 other players. This week the Bees face Everton at home, a chance for them to rectify their not-so-great home form of recent weeks. Everton have been both scoring more and conceding fewer since Moyes started at the club but may struggle to keep out the dynamic duo of Mbeumo and Wissa in FPL GW26…

Next up is Ouattara. While Dango (along with Kerkez and Kluivert) let us down in FPL GW26, it should be noted that Bournemouth picked up an early red card. Suspensions and injuries are variables that can affect FPL in big ways, but are almost impossible to predict – so we’ll just take this one on the chin and move on. Bournemouth remain one of the best sides in the league and are firmly in the race for not just European but Champions League football – they still have so much to play for.

Outtara Bournemouth

Ouattara in my opinion is the best Bournemouth attacking pick. While Evanlison’s return does raise some questions as to whether he will continue in his role as a makeshift striker, he has been in such great form and his numbers are so good, that he will surely keep his place in the team, even if that means being shifted out to the wing. His 0.55xG/90 and 0.3xA/90 makes him by far Bournemouth’s most dangerous attacker, and his 5 goal involvements since the start of the year demonstrates that he is able to translate those underlying numbers into real output. It remains to be seen where his future lies in this team, but for now he remains the best Bournemouth pick.

Finally, completing the midfield we have Bowen. The English winger has been absent from the Scout Picks teams for months now, due to West Ham’s poor form at the end of the Lopetegui reign, and the uncertainty surrounding the start of Potter’s. Their new English manager has continuously chopped and changed both West Ham’s formation and personnel, but one constant has been Bowen.

Bowen FPL

We all know Bowen’s quality, and his numbers (albeit lower than they have been in previous seasons) are great: 7 goals, 6 assists, 0.51xGI/90. With Leicester in FPL GW27 Bowen was an obvious punt, considering the Foxes defensive vulnerabilities. Bowen is West Ham’s talisman, and with a great fixture up next we thought it the perfect time for him to return to the AAFPL Scout Picks team.

Now for some big differential picks up front for FPL GW27: Mateta (7.4m) and Marmoush (7.1m) is our strike partnership for this gameweek…

Let’s start with Mr. Boom Boom Boom Boom himself. The Frenchman picked up another attacking return in FPL GW26, taking him to 13 for the season and more impressively 8 in his last 7 premier league matches. He and Palace have been in impeccable form since the turn of the year, and with a leaky Villa side as their opponent this week, we thought it high time to include him in the Scout Selection.

As many readers may know, I have some concerns about Mateta, namely his low volume of shot-taking, but he has proven yet again with this recent run of form that he can be trusted to score goals at a steady rate. Villa have conceded over 2xG in both of their last 2 premier league matches, and have conceded at least once in all of their last 6 games. Mateta’s in form, his numbers are good and he’s facing a fairly average defensive side – he’s an excellent pick for FPL GW27!

Finally, we have Marmoush, perhaps our most controversial pick for this weeks round of fixtures, but one that we are very confident in! After his hat-trick in GW25, Marmoush was brought it by many managers despite City’s tough fixture at Home to Liverpool in GW26, and while I don’t think Marmoush was the best pick for GW26, he is certainly an excellent option moving forwards

I wrote a post on my blog about Marmoush just this weekend (click here to read) in which I compared his numbers to other FPL forwards at similar price points… (green = top 3, yellow = middle 3, orange = bottom 3). It’s not an exact science, and it doesn’t necessarily mean everything, but I think it’s often good to have the numbers displayed like this.

Marmoush FPL

We don’t have a lot to go off in terms of his premier league career (apart from his hat-trick against Newcastle), but from what we’ve seen so far, he’s looked bright, enthusiastic and dangerous. He was City’s most dangerous player against Liverpool in GW26, and will have far more joy (and space) against Spurs in FPL GW27.

Games between Spurs and City are notorious for their high volume of goals, so while I wouldn’t back their defenders this week, I wouldn’t mind targeting an attacker or two from either side, and Marmoush is perhaps the pick of the bunch! I believe that when Haaland is fit Marmoush will become an essential FPL pick, as their link-up/combination in the Newcastle game was exceptional, but even without Haaaland he has looked more than capable of bagging some attacking returns by himself.
