Welcome to the FPL Gameweek 23 Captain Picks & Metrics blog. This week, there are strong captaincy candidates with good fixtures, including Isak, Salah, Trent Alexander Arnold, Wood, and Haaland, which makes captaincy interesting. Let’s see who tops the captaincy metrics for FPL GW23.

Salah is on top of the captaincy poll for GW23 with a whopping 68% of the votes and will be up against Ipswich at home who conceded 6 goals in the last game vs Man City. King Mo has blanked for the last two games on the bounce but this could be the fixture in which he goes big and add to his 12 double-digit hauls this season.

Isak who is in red-hot form with eleven goals and three assists in the last nine games, is 2nd in the captaincy poll with 22% of votes, and has a juicy fixture against Southampton.

The top five is completed by Haaland against Chelsea(H), Trent Alexander Arnold vs Ipswich(H), and Chris Wood vs Bournemouth(A)

Salah comes out on top for underlying numbers with an xG of 6.44 and 30 Shots inside the Box from the last 6 games. He also has the most 8 big chances in the PL over the last six games.

Isak is close behind Salah in the 2nd place with an xG of 5.53 and is joint highest for big chances(9) amongst all players in the Premier League for the last six games.

Haaland is only 3rd with an xG of 4.45 in the last six games but his 9 big chances is the joint highest in the league over the last six games.

Wood takes the fourth spot in the underlying numbers table with 1.87 xG in the last six games. He’s had five big chances in the last six games.

Trent Alexander Arnold is only 5th with an xG of 0.35, he’s created 16 chances including six big chances the most amongst defenders during the period & third highest overall.

Liverpool top the Team Underlying Data with 18.94 xG over the last 6 matches which is the highest amongst all teams by a huge margin. The Reds have also had 106 shots inside the box and 33 big chances during the period.

Newcastle rank 3rd for xG amongst the five teams with the Geordies registering 12.43 xG in the six games. They have also had a healthy 65 shots inside the box and 21 big chances.

Man City are 4th with an xG of 11.53 & they have had 22 big chances & only 67 shots inside the box in the last six games.

Nottingham Forest are last on the table with an xG of 8.00, 39 shots inside the box & 18 big chances.

We will use DraftHound’s odds for a Team scoring at least one goal in the Gameweek and the Odds of Scoring more than 2.0 goals in the Gameweek as a whole.

Liverpool have a whopping 97% odds of at least 1 goal and 69% odds of scoring 2+ goals in FPL GW23 vs Ipswich(H)

Newcastle United are 3rd with 90% odds of at least 1 goal and 45% odds of scoring 2+ goals against Southampton(A)

Man City are 4th with a 70% odds of at least 1 goal and 33% odds of scoring 2+ goals in FPL GW23 vs Chelsea(H).

Wood and Nottingham Forest are 5th and have a 67% odds of at least 1 goal and 14% odds of scoring 2+ goals against Bournemouth(A) in GW23.

With the help of the Anytime Returns Tool, I have derived the Safety Rank, which helps in determining the Safest Captaincy Option of the week, while I have used the Projected Points Tool to determine the Explosion Rank, which helps in determining the Most Explosive Option of the week. 

Salah is top for projections this week with 77% anytime returns & a 9.3 points projection in FPL GW23 vs Ipswich(H)

Isak is 2nd for projection this week with 72% anytime returns & a 7.8 points projection in FPL GW23 against Southampton(A).

Trent meanwhile is 3rd and has a 72% anytime returns & a 5.9 points projection in GW23 against Ipswich(H).

Haaland is 4th and has a 67% anytime returns & a 7.1 points projection in FPL GW23 against Chelsea(H)

Wood is last with a 40% anytime return & a 4.9 points projection in GW23 vs Bournemouth(A)

In the Fifth and Final Phase of the article, I have aggregated the Ranks derived above to pull out the Cumulative Rank Factor (CRF). According to our captaincy metrics, the candidate with the lowest cumulative rank factor is the ideal captaincy option. 

Salah tops the captaincy metrics for FPL GW23 with a CRF of 4 which is the least possible CRF in our captaincy metrics. Isak & Trent are joint 2nd with a CRF of 10. Haaland is 4th with a CRF of 15 & Wood is 5th with a CRF of 19.
