FPL GW22 Scout Picks Based on Stats, Analysis, and Matchups

Welcome to our FPL GW22 Scout Picks blog! Though GW21 has barely finished, GW22 is only one day away so it’s time for another scout team! While we made the correct decision with regards to captaincy, and managed to bring home a huge 77 points overall… the AAFPL Scout picks team fell to a crushing defeat to the Official scout picks team in GW21 – the difference between the two points totals, just one point!

Sels (5.0m) is the highest scoring goalkeeper in FPL with a huge 97 points scored so far. Forest face Southampton this week, the lowest scoring team in the premier league, making this weekend’s clash the immovable object versus the very stoppable force…

Sels Nottingham Forest

Sels put in a MOTM performance against Liverpool in GW21, making 5 saves and conceding just the one goal despite facing 1.95xGOT. Forest’s best defensive qualities were on show in that game, as they blocked 6 of Liverpool’s shots, and forced the Reds into 10 shots off target and just 7 on target. As I wrote about earlier in the season, this last-ditch compact defending is one of the reasons why Sels is such a great FPL option, as he doesn’t actually face too many shots and doesn’t have to make too many saves as normally his defenders do most of the work for him. But evidently, when he is called into action – he most definitely delivers!

Southampton are the worst team in the league and struggle not only to create but also to finish off chances. Just one win and 6 points so far this season – they’re coming for your record Derby County!

FPL GW22 Scout Picks – Defenders

FPL GW22 Scout Picks Defenders

Munoz (4.8m) retains his place, while FPL fan favorites Aina (5.3m) and Robinson (5.0m) return to the team for our FPL GW22 scout picks team!

Everything mentioned about Sels is applicable here. Aina is the highest-scoring defender in the game, 12 points clear of second place. He’s a nailed starter for one of the best defensive sides in the league and faces the worst attacking side in the league at home in GW22. United proved to us last week that just playing Southampton does not automatically mean you’ll keep a CS, but Forest are far better than United defensively (most CS in the league), so I wouldn’t be spooked by that result.

Next up is Munoz – the only defender to retain their place in the team, having delivered a sweet 6 points in FPL GW21. While it’s always nice for an FPL defender to return CS points, the real reason we’ve got Munoz is for his attacking potential. The Columbian’s 0.22xG/90 and 0.14xA/90 puts him up there with the best in the league amongst defenders for xGI/90 – not far off Trent’s 0.4xGI/90 and better than Gabriel’s 0.28xGI/90.

Against Leicester he was far quieter than normal, producing just 0.06xGI, and it was his side’s defensive performance that got him his points. Munoz did also create two chances, 1 big chance, so it’s not all doom and gloom! Palace were probably lucky to come away with a CS in FPL GW21, as Leicester created more than enough chances to win the game, and more than enough xG too (2.1xG).

As mentioned however, it’s Munoz attacking capabilities that are so attractive, not his side’s defensive record. Palace face West Ham this weekend, who are still struggling to get to grips with their new manager’s style of play and tactics, with the Hammers winning (unconvincingly) 3-2 in midweek against Fulham. Speaking of Fulham…

Robinson FPL

Robinson returns to the team in FPL GW22, after a stunning performance in mid-week in which he produced 2 assists! That’s 9 assists for the season, an exceptional tally considering we’ve still got a third of the campaign to go. His 0.14xA/90 is far below the xGI of the likes of Munoz and TAA, but 9 assists is hard to ignore!

Fulham face Leicester in GW22, a side who are currently on a 6 match losing streak, and have scored just 2 goals in that period, conceding 16. Fulham on the other hand, statistically, have the third best defense in the league! Yes they’ve conceded 30 goals, but their xGA of 26.2 is only bettered by Liverpool and Arsenal. They concede very few chances per game, but their ‘keeper has struggled at times this season, meaning that they are one of only a handful of sides who’s xGA is better than their goals against… Robinson is the ideal FPL defender this weekend: great attacking numbers, great individual form, great underlying defensive numbers, great fixture – what’s not to love!

FPL GW22 Scout Picks – Midfielders

Salah (13.7m), Palmer (11.4m), Sarr (5.9m) and Savinho (6.5m) make up the midfield for this weekend’s AAFPL GW22 Scout selection team!

Salah and Palmer are ever presents in our team and require little to no justification. So instead let us focus on which one is the better captaincy choice this week… The public consensus seems to be on Palmer, just, over Salah, but what do the stats say? Well, Salah has not blanked against Brentford in the last 2 years – picking up 6 returns in 4 meetings with the Bees. Brentford also tend to concede the majority of their chances down the right and centre of the pitch, perhaps due to the absence of Henry for the majority of the season.

Palmer picked up a massive 17-point haul the last time he faced Wolves, but a 2-6 result seems improbable, but not impossible, this time around. Palmer also scored 10 points in GW21, whereas Salah blanked. Salah is averaging almost 2 goal involvements a game away from home this season, while Palmer is averaging just over 1GI/90 at home.

Palmer injury update(From today’s press conference):

Conventional wisdom would be to go with Palmer: Home fixture compared to Away fixture, facing a team lower in the table and in worse form. But Chelsea have dipped somewhat lately, both in terms of form and their underlying numbers, and Palmer’s FPL returns have suffered as a result. There is also an injury concern around Palmer. He’s still a great option, and probably essential for almost all FPL teams, but for this week, Salah looks like the best pick

Palace have had somewhat of an FPL 24/25 renaissance of late, with their midfielders, defenders and attackers all being spoken about as good options. Now this is of course in part due to their fixture run, but is also in part down to their form. Both Eze and Sarr picked up attacking returns in GW21, while Munoz continues to produce excellent underlying numbers and has been so unlucky not to get any attacking returns. Our palace pick is Sarr, due to his underlying numbers being superior to Eze’s…

Sarr has more goals, a higher xG, a higher xA, and most importantly more FPL points than Eze so far this season, and has been a revelation since being moved full-time into the front three (rather than as a wing-back). Palace face West Ham this weekend, a side who, as mentioned, are still yet to fully click under their new boss, and were extremely lucky to beat Fulham in GW21. Palace are in great form, and their assets are all good budget options for GW22.

The latest update we have from today’s press conference is that Sarr is an injury doubt.

Sarr Injury Update:

Finally, we have Manchester City’s Savinho. The cheapest city midfield/attacking asset who is likely to start, he’s a fantastic way into a City team who, while they continue to struggle, are starting to score goals again. In terms of underlying numbers, Savinho has an identical xGI/90 to Foden, with 0.24xG/90 and 0.39xA/90. His 5 assists in the league is the best in the city squad, and according to the data, he’s unlucky to have, so far, only hit the back of the net once.

Savinho FPL

He’s lit up the pitch in recent games, putting in a stunning performances against Brentford in GW21 and picking up 5 FPL points. City face Ipswich this weekend, a fixture which they won 4-1 earlier this season, with Savinho contributing 1 assist and picking up one bonus point. He’s fairly nailed, super cheap, has great attacking numbers and a fantastic fixture in GW22.

Haaland (14.8m), Raul (5.7m) and Wood (6.9m) complete the team…

Fresh off the back of signing a new 9.5-year contract, Haaland makes the team for FPL GW22. In the fixture against Ipswich earlier this season, Haaland scored a hatrick, so he’ll be hoping to replicate that this time round. His numbers remain elite, and City have looked improved in recent games, so it was a no-brainer to try and include him in this weeks team. He could also be considered a differential captaincy pick

Haaland FPL

Jimenez played well and was unlucky not to score in Fulham’s fixture against West Ham in FPL GW21. In that game he created 1 chance, took 4 shots, and accumulated an xG of 0.55, hitting the woodwork in the process. His numbers are worse now than they were a few weeks ago, but that just downgrades him from statistically one of the best strikers in the world to an elite attacker.

Fulham have been fairly patchy this season, but still have excellent underlying numbers – they’ll be hoping that they can reset against Leicester, who are themselves in a rotten run of form. Jimenez has managed 8 goals and 2 assists so far this season, and will be looking to build on that in GW22, up against the fragile and vulnerable defensive paring of Faes and Vestergaard – both of whom are prone to making defensive errors.

Chris Wood FPL

Finally, we have Nottingham Forest’s Chris Wood. Wood has been immense this season, and continues to be one of the biggest rank killers the game has ever seen! His 13 goals is only bettered by Salah, Haaland, Isak, and Palmer, all of whom most people would consider world-class. Echoes of Jamie Vardy at Leicester City perhaps?…

His underlying numbers are not great, in fact, they are fairly average, which is often why he is dismissed from Scout Pick conversations, as it’s likely that this form will not continue forever. That being said, Southampton are one of the worst teams defensively, having conceded 47 goals in just 21 Premier League games so far this season. They’re on a 4 game-losing streak and fell apart against United in GW21 – devoid of confidence and belief. In the reverse fixture, Forest produced their highest xG total of the season (2.86), and that fixture was away from home! At the City Ground Forest look immense at the moment, stranger things have happened, but if Southampton were to win, that would be one of the biggest upsets of the season so far – so we’re backing Wood!
