When to Use Your FPL Chips? FPL Chip Strategy Explained

It’s that time of the season when we start planning for when to use our FPL Chips, unlike previous seasons this time around the triple captain chip has been used by quite a few managers early than usual. In this blog, we take a look at the best FPL chip strategy to use your free hit, wildcard, triple captain(If you still have it), and bench boost in the 22/23 season based on the current double and blank gameweek information to help gain ranks on the managers who have already used their chips.

2022/23 FPL Chip Strategy Explained

Now that the double gameweek and blank gameweek fixtures are much more clearer, I’ll be writing this blog in two phases, with the first one being the ideal gameweeks to play each of the chips. The first phase in itself should give you a clear idea to map your own chip strategy based on the chips you have remaining.

But anyways in the second phase, I’ll mention the best combinations possible for most of the popular scenarios(All chips left, All chips bar TC left, etc). We’ll do another blog separately going into detail about two or three popular chip strategies based on fixtures when there is further clarity on the doubles/blanks.

Key points to note about upcoming Double and Blank Gameweeks

• FPL DGW29: FPL DGW29 is the biggest double of the season with 12 teams doubling
• FPL BGW32: Blank gameweek due to FA Cup Semi-finals with 8 confirmed fixtures, 4 teams blank. Man City vs Brighton, and Man United vs Chelsea will be the blanks in GW32!
• FPL DGW34: 4 or 6 could double to accommodate the GW28/32 blanks
• FPL DGW37: 4 or 6 teams could double to accommodate the GW28/32 blanks
• There will also be one mini-double in gameweek 31/35/36 when Brighton and most likely Newcastle will Double to accommodate the Brighton vs Newcastle game which was postponed due to the Carabao cup final.
• International break: There is an international break between GW28 and GW29 which allows a bit more to plan your chips as the FA Cup quarterfinals would have been completed and the draw for the semifinals would have been made as well.
  • GW28 Deadline: 17th March, 2023 & GW29 Deadline: 01st April, 2023

Confirmed FPL Double Gameweeks From FPL GW36

Key points based on current info (Useful for planning)

1. 6 teams surely have a game in BGW28 and BGW32 plus have a double in GW29- Brentford, Leicester, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Bournemouth, and Forest.
2. Brighton, Man United, Man City, and Chelsea will blank in GW32.
3. Brighton will have three double gameweeks
4. Man United and Man City will have two double gameweeks
5. Liverpool, Fulham, West Ham, Chelsea, and Newcastle will have one double gameweek

Ideal Gameweeks to play your FPL Wildcard Chip

FPL Gameweek 29

• Liverpool vs Manchester City(A), Chelsea(A)
• Brighton vs Brentford(H), Bournemouth(A)
• Manchester United vs Newcastle(A), Brentford(H)
• Chelsea vs Aston Villa(H), Liverpool(H)
• Leeds vs Arsenal(A), Nottingham Forest(H)
• Newcastle vs Manchester United(H), West Ham United(H)
• Brentford vs Brighton(A), Manchester United(A)
• Leicester vs Crystal Palace(A), Aston Villa(H)
• Villa vs Chelsea(A), Leicester(A)
• Forest vs Wolves(H), Leeds United(A)
• West Ham vs Southampton(H), Newcastle United(A)
• Bournemouth vs Fulham(H), Brighton(H)

Another good window to play the Wildcard is to play the Wildcard before GW29 during the international break with all the doubles in GW29 clearly known and you can also use it to avoid any injuries that might happen during the INTL break. The con is that you’ll not be able to use any other chip if you Wildcard going into GW29.

One more point, Double gameweek 34/37 fixtures could be added before the GW29 deadline but it could also be added after the DGW29 deadline.

If the double gameweek 34/37 fixtures are known then you can potentially set up your team till the end of the season planning for the three doubles in GW29, 34, and GW37.

FPL Gameweek 33

Gameweek 33 is one other option for wildcarding to set up for the rest of the season and potentially bench boost in Gameweek 34.

One con of Wildcarding in GW33 is that Arsenal and Man City play each other and Spurs play Man United. Two of those teams(Man United/Man City) could double in GW34, so you’re in a tricky situation of loading players in GW33 WC with tricky fixtures but you want them for the doubles in GW34.

FPL Gameweek 34

Alternatively, you can dead-end your team into GW33 and then wildcard in GW34 for the double aiming for a strong finish to the season keeping the double in 37 also in mind. This could work brilliantly if you decide to Benchboost in GW29 without needing to wildcard in GW28.

When to play FPL Wildcard Summary?

Wildcard	Pros	Cons
GW29	Attack GW29 Doubles(12 teams Double) & also cover GW32 blanks(which we will know before GW29 deadline) with a view on DGW34/37	Would mean Bench Boost in GW34 Double. Long gap between WC & BB can be a problem.
GW33	Prepare a team for GW34 BB where 4-6 Teams would Double	TOT vs MUN, MCI vs ARS in GW33- Tricky to attack with these teams
GW34	Target GW34 Doubles(4-6 teams Double) where most big teams are likely to Double.	Would mean GW37 BB- More rotation if there is nothing to play for

Lastly, as always the WC chip is very team dependent so if you feel the urge to WC and have the confidence that your WC team will help in you in the short term and long term then go for it. Make a potential WC draft and then compare it with your current team, if you’re making 3-4 changes then it’s wiser to manage it without a wildcard.

Ideal Gameweeks to play your FPL Bench Boost Chip

Ideal bench boost gameweeks are often limited and you would look to bench boost in DGW29/34 immediately off a wildcard in GW28 or GW33. GW37 could also be an option to BB but holding the chip till that long and spreading your funds late in the season might not be ideal, getting it out early in one of the big doubles(GW29/34) should be the best way to do it.

Summary: Bench boost in GW29/GW34 to target the big doubles!

When to play FPL Bench Boost Summary?

Gameweek	Notes
GW29	12 teams double in GW29. Need not necessarily require a Wildcard before that or you can wildcard in GW28 and then Benchboost in GW29. Looks to be the best strategy if on a GW26/GW27 Wildcard.
GW34	Can be used after GW33 Wildcard, 4 or 6 teams double. But it would be a benching Dilemma in GW33 with two Top 6 teams against each other. Con is that it is not a big double as predicted before
GW37	Can be used after GW34 Wildcard. In GW37, 4 or 6 teams will double. Con is that it is not a big double as predicted before

Ideal Gameweek to play your FPL Free hit Chip

FPL Gameweek 29:

GW29 is the biggest double of the season with 12 teams doubling, you can try to play the FH in GW29 to maximize the doubles by targeting the teams that have good doubles. The problem is that you can’t play your Benchboost then which you might have to most likely play in GW34. Most managers would either Wildcard or play the Bench boost in GW29 so it could be a differential strategy.

Rough FPL DGW29 Free Hit Draft

FPL Gameweek 32:

Only 4 teams are blanking are likely to blank in GW32. But these could be big teams like Man City, Man United, Chelsea, and Brighton. There are quality players from these teams who you would require post and pre-GW32. So Free Hit could be a good move here.

FPL Gameweek 33:

Gameweek 33 is not a double or a blank. However, the reason I’m mentioning GW33 is because of the fact that the fixtures in GW33 is tricky with Spurs playing Man United, and Man City playing Arsenal. You can potentially play the Free hit here and target the GW33 fixtures and go into DGW34 with your regular team which would heavily consist of Man United, Man City, Spurs, and Arsenal assets.

FPL Gameweek 34:

Gameweek 34 is a double with potentially 4 or 6 teams doubling and this makes it a natural Free hit slot if you decide to use other chips in GW28/29/32. The doubles in GW34 will be based on the blanks in GW28/32 and it’s likely that 4-6 teams from Fulham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man United, Brighton, Man city, West Ham and Leeds could be teams that could double in FPL DGW34.

FPL Gameweek 37:

Gameweek 37 is also the last double gameweek of the season, with 4-6 teams doubling due to the FA Cup blanks in GW28/32. It is likely that 4-6 teams from Fulham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man United, Brighton, Man city, West Ham and Leeds could be teams that could double in FPL DGW37.

Lastly, GW38 Free hit has also been done in the past to target teams that have something to play for, however, with some good doubles/tricky blanks that might come our way this season, I don’t see merit in holding FH for the last gameweek of the season.

When to play FPL Free Hit Summary?

GW34	4 or 6 teams will Double.	Not as big as predicted before
GW37	4 0r 6 teams Double.	Not as big as predicted before

Ideal Gameweeks to play your FPL Triple Captain Chip

• Rashford/Bruno in DGW29 vs Newcastle(A), Brentford(H)
• Salah in DGW29 vs Manchester City(A), Chelsea(A)
• Haaland in a home game in any single gameweek
• Haaland/Rashford/Bruno in their doubles GW34/37

Best Possible FPL Chip Strategy Combinations

• Wildcard – GW28, Bench Boost – GW29, Free Hit – GW32/34/37, load teams that play both in 28 and double in GW29(Seven teams)
• Wildcard – GW29, Free Hit – GW32/37, Bench Boost – GW34, Load teams that double in 29/34 and BB in GW34
• Free Hit GW28, Wildcard GW33, Bench Boost GW34
• FH in 29, WC33, BB34(GW33 fixtures are tough, as mentioned earlier)
• Wildcard in GW33, BB in GW34, FH in GW37.
• Free Hit – BGW28, Wildcard – GW33, Bench Boost – DGW34
• Bench Boost – DGW29, Free Hit – BGW32, Wildcard – DGW34

Don’t have one chip scenario:

If you don’t have bench boost then:

• Wildcard – GW28/29
• Free Hit – BGW32/DGW34

If you don’t have a Free hit then:

• Wildcard: GW28/29
• Bench Boost: DGW29/34

If you don’t have Wildcard then:

• Free Hit: DGW29/BGW32/DGW34/DGW37
• Bench Boost: DGW29/DGW34

Only one chip left situation

• Only Bench Boost left: DGW29 or DGW34
• Only Free Hit left: DGW29 or DGW34 or DGW37 or BGW32
• Only Wildcard left: GW28/29 or GW34

As always there is no one fixed FPL Chip strategy and you can play them in multiple different ways, the above-mentioned FPL Chip strategies are all the best-case scenarios. I’ll keep them updated based on the double/blank confirmations when it’s announced.

Also once the doubles/blanks are known we’ll pick the popular strategies and explain the pros/cons of the strategies based on the fixtures like we did last year.
