Best Midfielders to Target in World Cup Fantasy | Price Point Wise

Every 4 years, there’s magic in the air as it is the time for the greatest show on earth – the FIFA
World Cup. It’s the tournament which has over the years made icons out of men as well as devils
out of heroes. People can laugh, cry, dance, sulk but the thing which they can’t afford to do is
ignore the spectacle which casts a spell over the entire world. For some of us who love numbers,
World Cup Football is the second most viewed sporting event with 3.3 billion (that’s half the
world’s population!) tuning in in 2018.

With stakes so high, it’s but natural for players to feel the pressure of performing and that’s what
differentiates the best from the rest. The likes of Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo Nazario, Ronaldinho,
Zidane are all remembered for the golden trophy they held aloft. Whereas critics of other legends
like Zico, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi always state the only chink in their otherwise sturdy armours
– the absence of the World Cup winner’s medal in their cabinet.

The 2022 edition is just around the corner. The various football leagues are soon drawing to a mid-
season break while the big boys prepare to show the world what they have got. Now there are two
ways of getting involved in the tournament – the first is obvious – watching. But for fantasy addicts
like us there is the extra incentive of being a super selector and slogging to earn bragging rights
over friends by playing the FIFA fantasy game. So, without further ado let’s start today’s topic – the
midfielders who you can consider having in your team. I’ve broken it up by price tiers to help build
a balanced team. So here you go:

Best Midfielders to Target in World Cup Fantasy

Premium Tier (9 – 11 million)

Kevin De Bruyne, Price: $11m

Fixtures: Canada, Morocco, Croatia

Best Midfielders to Target in World Cup Fantasy- De Bruyne

Post pandemic (2020 onwards), the Belgian wizard has played 103 games for Man City where he has he has scored 32 goals and provided 44 assists. His international form is even scarier – in 25 matches for his country, de Bruyne has racked up 10 goals and 16 assists: that’s a staggering goal involvement of 1.05 per match. Expect de Bruyne to light up Qatar as this might be the last chance of the Belgian golden generation to lay hand on the golden trophy. There’s no surprise he is the most popular midfielder picked (53%). That’s more than the cumulative figure of the next two in the lift Valverde (24%) and Sane (22%) thus making him a must have else you might find yourself quickly playing catch up in your mini leagues.

Cheaper alternative from Belgium Midfield:

Best Midfielders to Target in World Cup Fantasy- Trossard

Trossard is a great alternative option from Belgium’s midfield. The Brighton attacker has been in sensational form scoring against the big teams in the premier league for fun. He’s registered 7 goals and 3 assists in 13 PL games this season and is in red-hot form. For the national team he has 5 goals and 3 assists in 21 games. He’s just 5.5 Million and could be a budget great enabler in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Fantasy.

Leroy Sane, Price: $9m

Fixtures: Japan, Spain, Costa Rica

Best Midfielders to Target in World Cup Fantasy- Leroy Sane

Only England (39) scored more goals than Germany (36) in the World Cup qualifiers. Leroy Sane provides an assured starting route to the ruthless German side. Amongst German midfielders, Sane had the second most goal involvement of 6 (4 goals, 2 assists) just behind Leon Goretzka’s 8 (1G 7A). But where Sane trumps his clubmate is his guaranteed starting berth and the advanced positions he takes up on the pitch. With the frontline of Gnabry and Muller, Sane can wreak havoc with both goals and assists especially on Matchday 1.

Jamal Musiala, Price: $8m

At one million less fellow Bayern Munich attacker Jamal Musiala could be a great option to consider as well. The young German talent is expected to start and is a good alternative to Sane. This season he has 9 goals and 5 assists in 13 Bundesliga games for Bayern.

Best Midfielders in World Cup Fantasy- Affordable Tier (6.5 – 8.5 million)

Bergwijn, Price: $7m

Best Midfielders to Target in World Cup Fantasy- Bergwijn

Bergwijn is arguably one of the best Out of Position(OOP) midfielders in the World Cup Fantasy game as he plays like a second striker along with Depay. In his last 6 starts for Netherlands, he has 5 goals and 1 assist which also involved goals against quality teams like Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Poland. With Bergwijn nailed to start as striker and a relatively easier group with 3 winnable games, Bergwijn should be an amazing budget midfield option in this year’s World Cup Fantasy.

Davy Klaassen, Price: $6m

Fixtures: Senegal, Ecuador, Qatar

Best Midfielders to Target in World Cup Fantasy- Klaassen

The one that is going under the radar and hence might prove to be bargain differential is Klassen. Starting 9 out of the 10 World Cup qualifiers, Netherlands have played, Klassen’s goal involvement 10 (4G 6a) is only behind Depay’s 19 (12 G 7 A), Kane’s 14 (12G 2A) and Lewandowski’s 13 (9G 4A). So it goes without saying that the lad knows how to finish or find the finisher. He has an easy run of fixtures too in the group stage making him a must-have to gain the early lead in the mini-leagues. If you compare Bergwijn and Klassen, Bergwijn is a much more safer option to consider as he’s more nailed than Klassen. But for his price Klassen is definitely a good option, watch out for his minutes closer to the deadline!

DUŠAN TADIĆ, Price: $8m

Fixtures: Brazil, Cameroon, Switzerland

Best Midfielders to Target in World Cup Fantasy- Tadic

Serbia topped their group in World Cup Qualifiers. Not only that, they finished undefeated. They scored more goals than second-placed and giants Portugal. So you may want to take some interest in their leading attackers – Mitrovic and Tadić. Since this article is about midfielders let’s focus on Tadić. The wizard was involved in 8 goals in the qualifiers – joint highest amongst midfielders. He racked up similar numbers last year as well in the Euro Qualifiers – stamping his consistency. In his last 5 seasons for Ajax, he has played 139 games and scored 68 goals and given 70 assists thus registering an incredible 0.99 goal involvement per match. Surely the first match looks tricky, but after that expect Tadić to light up Qatar and how.

Filip Kostic, Serbia- $6m

Kostic is another excellent option to consider from Serbia at just 6 Million, he’s very much involved in the attack even though he’s deployed as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 system for Serbia. He is on some set pieces and generally does well on key passes which is a good bonus as 2 key passes earns you a point in WC Fantasy.

Best Midfielders in World Cup Fantasy- Budget Tier (4 – 6 million)

Mikkel Damsgaard, Price: $6m

Fixtures: Tunisia, France, Australia

Best Midfielders to Target in World Cup Fantasy- Damsgaard

With 7 goal involvements (2G 5A) in World Cup Qualifiers, Damsgaard can surely shoot the ball – either in the net or to an eventual scorer. Armed with the versatile Christian Eriksen by his side, Damsgaard can be shrewd budget enabler. The only problem is his minutes. He started 5 of his 10 qualifying games but that’s largely due to his thigh injury which kept him out for a considerable time. But now that he is back and putting in minutes for Brentford albeit in the cup, you can expect some magic from the Dane provided you keep an eye out on the team news as he is not a guaranteed starter.

Skov Olsen, Price: $6m

Damsgaard’s potential minutes issues is solved by Olsen who’s a guaranteed starter for Denmark. The young Danish attacker has quickly become an important asset for Denmark, he was the joint highest-scoring player for Denmark with 5 goals along with Mæhle in the world cup qualifiers. Overall he has already got 8 goals and 6 assists in 22 games for Denmark. Eriksen at 8 Million is also another brilliant option if you have the funds to spend on him, he plays in a more advanced role for Denmark which suits brilliantly for us fantasy football managers.

Rodrigo De Paul, Price: $5m

Fixtures: Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland

Best Midfielders to Target in World Cup Fantasy-Rodrigo De Paul

Imagine De Paul to be the Kante/ Romeu of FPL – boring to the core and will neither give you goals or assists. But will guarantee a starting place for the team and thus can be great option to go for the big guns like Neymar and Mbappe. In World Cup Fantasy, there are points for Tackles and Key passes for Midfielders where De Paul could come in handy.

De Paul started the most games for Argentina in their qualifying campaign scoring once and assisting 3 times. Argentina has a kind group fixture and the lads will give their best for one final time for the little magician Messi. So expected some spirited performances from De Paul and who knows? If it’s your lucky day, he might score/ assist as well.
