Best Goalkeepers to Target in World Cup Fantasy | Price Point Wise

This blog explores managers’ options for goalkeepers ahead of The World Cup, which starts in less than 3 days. Unlike in FPL, goalkeepers can earn 5 points for a clean sheet in Qatar. I have split them into 2 price brackets, Premium (5.5m – 6.0m) and Budget (5.0m – 3.5m). I suggest managers go for the approach of x1 Premium and x1 Budget or x2 Budget. With the first round of the competition being the group stages, we can expect lots of goals. Therefore if managers use one of these approaches, they will still have enough in the bank to maximise attacking potential. Let’s take a look at our options.

Note- In World Cup Fantasy, For Goalkeepers there are +5 points for a cleansheet & -1 point for every goal conceded from the second goal. Check out the Full Beginners Guide for World Cup Fantasy– Points scoring, Transfers, Squad selection, Captaincy, Chips, etc- Everything explained.

Best Goalkeepers to Target in World Cup Fantasy | Price Point Wise

Premium Goalkeepers- World Cup Fantasy(5.5m – 6.0m)

Hugo Lloris (6.0m)

Fixtures– Australia, Denmark, Tunisia

World Cup Fantasy Goalkeepers- Lloris

Hugo Lloris is more than a tempting option for managers ahead of their first game. The French keeper is certain to start and has been captain of Les Blues for over 10 years. Lloris has made nearly 140 appearances for The National Side and shows no signs of stopping. The 35-year-old has played in every game for Spurs so far this season in The Premier League. France comfortably came top of their group in qualifying and only conceded 3 goals in the process.

France has a favourable group with Denmark being their main threat. Australia and Tunisia are also in Group D with France, but shouldn’t cause the reigning champions too much trouble in The Group Stages. France is the strongest on paper in this group and shouldn’t concede many goals in the early rounds of the competition. Therefore, I think Lloris is one to consider.

Thibaut Courtois (6.0m)

Fixtures- Canada, Morocco, Croatia

World Cup Fantasy Goalkeepers- Courtois

Thibaut Courtois is an experienced keeper, who we know can perform on the big stage. Courtois has made 96 appearances for Belgium over the years and has already played at both The 2014 and 2018 World Cup, the latter of which he won The Golden Glove for best goalkeeper of the tournament. Belgium made it into the Semis at their last World Cup and should make it through to at least The Round of 16 in this competition with their only real competition being Croatia in The Group Stages. So far this year Courtois has been in great form, having already won his 3rd La Liga title and his 1st UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid. The 30-year-old could prove to be vital to Belgium’s defense this World Cup and score valuable points for managers along the way.

Jordan Pickford (5.5m)

Fixtures– Iran, USA, Wales

World Cup Fantasy Goalkeepers- Pickford

Jordan Pickford has been one of England’s star players over the past few years. The Toffees’ No1 has made 45 appearances for The Three Lions and hopes to help England progress through the competition this year in Qatar. At Euro 2020, Pickford kept 5 clean sheets in 7 games, conceding just 2 goals. As well as keeping clean sheets, we know the 28-year-old is more than capable when it comes to penalties. Despite England losing The 2020 Euro Final to Italy, Pickford saved 2 penalties in the penalty shootout. He will look to continue his international form in Qatar at this year’s World Cup.

England’s reserve keepers Nick Pope (4.0m) and Aaron Ramsdale (TBC) are arguably in better form heading into the tournament, having both kept 7 clean sheets for their domestic clubs in The Premier League this season. Nevertheless, Pickford has rescued England on many occasions in recent tournaments and Southgate doesn’t look like dropping him anytime soon. England shouldn’t concede too many in The Group Stages as they compete against Iran, USA and Wales. Pickford is a strong premium option for managers and is 0.5m cheaper than the likes of Lloris and Courtois.

Emiliano Martinez (5.5 Million)

Fixtures- Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland

World Cup Fantasy Goalkeepers- Emi Martinez

Emiliano Martinez has not yet been added to the game, so we don’t know how much he will cost. If I had to guess I would predict The Villa keeper to be somewhere around the 5.5m mark. If this is the case, I think Martinez is your man, especially for GW1 where Argentina take on a weak Saudi Arabia, who have only scored 3 goals in their previous 8 matches. The 30-year-old has made 19 international appearances for Argentina, who are one of the favourites to win The World Cup. The team is in fine form heading into The World Cup, having won The Copa America last year, where Martinez was awarded The Golden Glove for being the best keeper at the tournament.

Martinez is reliable and more than handy in a penalty shootout, having saved 3 penalties in a penalty shootout against Colombia in the Semis of last year’s Copa America, which as previously mentioned Argentina went on to win. Once Martinez is added to the game, get him into your teams as I am certain he will reward managers, especially in The Group Stages against the likes of Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Poland.

Alisson Becker (6.0m)

Fixtures- Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon

World Cup Fantasy Goalkeepers- Alisson

Last and certainly not least in The Premium category is Brazil’s, Alisson Becker. Brazil only conceded 5 goals in qualifying for Qatar and with Alisson in goal and an experienced CB partnership in front of him consisting of Chelsea’s Thiago Silva (6.0m) and PSG’s Marquinhos (5.5m), I can’t see them conceding many in the whole competition. Alisson has made 57 international appearances and is looking good heading into The World Cup. The Liverpool keeper has the 3rd most points in FPL for a goalkeeper so far this season, just 5 points behind Newcastle’s Nick Pope. Alisson looks like he will keep Man City’s goalkeeper Ederson (5.5m) on the bench and be Brazil’s first-choice keeper at The World Cup. With Brazil being one of the favourites to win, I can see Alisson having a great campaign, conceding very few along the way.

Budget Goalkeepers- World Cup Fantasy(3.0m – 5.0m)

For many managers, keepers in The Budget category will be a second choice option and will be a backup for their Premium keeper. However, this does not mean to say that these players aren’t capable of performing and rewarding managers with points. Here are a few of my top picks in this price range.

Diogo Costa (5.0m)

Fixtures- Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea

World Cup Fantasy Goalkeepers- Diogo Costa

Diogo Costa is one for managers to keep their eyes on. The Portuguese International has played in all 13 of Porto’s league games so far this season, keeping 6 clean sheets along the way, conceding just 9 goals. Portugal will be looking to do well at the tournament in what looks like to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s Final World Cup. Portugal has a strong defence with the likes of Man City’s Reuben Dias (5.5m) and Joao Cancelo (6.0) both featuring. Having a solid defence should help young Costa, who is only 23 years old. Manager Fernando Santos put faith in the young lad and named Costa as Portugal’s first-choice keeper in the World Cup Qualifier Campaign. He will look to continue to impress his manager in what will be his first World Cup. Despite teammate Rui Patricio (TBC) playing in the friendly vs Nigeria earlier this week, I expect Costa to start Portugal’s first game against Ghana next week. Costa could be a great differential option for managers to keep a lookout for.

Kasper Schmeichel (5.0m)

Fixtures- Tunisia, France, Australia

World Cup Fantasy Goalkeepers- Schmeichel

Kasper Schmeichel is another player who is yet to be added to the game. We have no idea what his price will be, but I would estimate around 5.0m. Despite Schmeichel not being in the same bracket as The Premium keepers, I still think he is a more than tempting option to have as a first-choice keeper in our squads. Not only would he be a cheaper 1st choice keeper option, but I genuinely think Denmark could be the dark horse of this year’s World Cup and go deep into the competition. Denmark is a strong team, that only conceded 3 goals in qualifiers. Schmeichel, who has over 80 international appearances, started all 10 of Denmark’s qualifying games, keeping 8 clean sheets. The old Leicester City man has already been to The 2018 World Cup and The 2020 Euros with Denmark and they should progress to at least the round of 16 at this year’s competition. Their main threats in Group D are the holders France, however, Denmark has played France twice in The Nations League this year and beaten them on both occasions. I have a feeling that this could be a successful campaign for both Denmark and Schmeichel.

Danny Ward (4.5m)

Fixtures- USA, Iran, England

World Cup Fantasy Goalkeepers- Danny Ward

Danny Ward is a tricky one. Form-wise, he is currently one of the best in the world at this price, however, I’m not 100% certain he will start in Wales’ first match against the USA. Teammate Wayne Hennessey (4.5m) has started the last two games for Robert Page’s side and was the hero in their World Cup Qualifier Play-Off Final win over Ukraine back in June. However, Ward will be making life hard for Page as his recent form has been sensational, and with Hennessey yet to make a domestic league appearance this season, it will certainly have got the manager thinking. Ward has the 2nd most clean sheets so far this season in The Premier League, achieving 6 of them in his last 7 games. In the last 7 GWs before The World Cup, Ward scored a staggering 52 points. That averages out at nearly 7.5 points per game! Will Wales stick with Hennessey the veteran or recognise the form of Ward?

Sergio Rochet (4.0m)

Fixtures- South Korea, Portugal, Ghana

World Cup Fantasy Goalkeepers- Sergio Rochet

The less money you spend on a keeper, the less likely they are to start. However, Sergio Rochet has started 8 of Uruguay’s last 9 games. The 29-year-old has played 35 games for Nacional in The Uruguayan Primera Division this year and looks like he could potentially start for Uruguay in Qatar. Rochet is the captain of Nacional and may be an interesting differential option for managers to consider. The Uruguayan is not certain to start but could be worth having as a cheap backup who potentially might play the odd game.

Saad Al Sheeb (4.0m)

Fixtures- Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands

World Cup Fantasy Goalkeepers- Al Sheeb

Saad Al Sheeb is a bargain at only 4.0m and is expected to start for Qatar at The World Cup. He has made over 75 international appearances for Qatar and will be looking to perform at what will be a home World Cup for the 32-year-old. Al Sheeb was the first-choice keeper at The 2019 AFC Asian Cup, where Qatar was crowned champions. Having only conceded 1 goal in 7 games of the competition, he won the best goalkeeper award. As previously mentioned in my last article, Qatar has spent 6 months this year training together, especially for The World Cup. So where some players from the top European Leagues may be feeling fatigued due to an overload of domestic football. Qatar players will be raring to go and show what they can do as hosts of the competition. If you want a cheap keeper, who will play, Qatar’s Al Sheeb could well be your player.
