FPL Gameweek 3 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold and Sell

Welcome to the second of what’s going to be a weekly column from me (@deevyaparekh), here on AllAboutFPL! Inspired by one of the first FPL blogs I ever read on Twitter back in 2012, I think it would be helpful to combine stats with the eye-test to bring you 2 players each that I’d recommend are a ‘Buy’, ‘Hold’ or a ‘Sell’ moving forward and provide substance that should hopefully add some value to readers. Here go my recommendations ahead of FPL Gameweek 3.

Last Week Buy, hold, Sell results: 3/6 correct call, Mitro missed a penalty, Kane scored, and Son blanked being the not right calls.

FPL Gameweek 3 Transfer Tips: Two players to BUY

1) Rodrigo (Leeds, MID, 6.1m)

FPL Gameweek 3 Transfer Tips ~ players to BUY ~ Rodrigo

Rodrigo tops the points table on FPL heading into GW3! The Leeds attacker has been listed as a Midfielder in the game but operates as a second striker off the frontman for Leeds. After Patrick Bamford’s injury this weekend, Rodrigo took on more of a direct striker’s role and continued to excel.

This week against Southampton, Rodrigo had 5 shots, 3 on target with an xG of 1.42 and created 3 chances including 1 ‘big chance’ for an xA of 0.42. An xGI of 1.84 from this game is tremendous and even though he had a relatively quiet GW1 in terms of his underlying data, early signs suggest that he could emerge as one of the best midfield options in this price range playing in an attacking Leeds side.

After a fixture against Chelsea in GW3, Leeds embark on a kind run of games and his performance against Southampton both in its underlying data and in his positioning per his heat map below, have shown plenty of promise.

2) Ivan Toney (Brentford, FWD, 7.1)

FPL Gameweek 3 Transfer Tips ~ players to BUY ~ Ivan Toney

Ivan Toney is my second recommendation to buy this week. The Brentford frontman followed a strong performance against Leicester with a great showing against Manchester United.

This week against ManUnited, he had 1 shot with an xG of 0.02 but created 4 chances including 2 big chances for an xA of 0.94. This follows the Leicester game where he notched close to 0.6 xG. This shows Toney’s versatility and his various avenues to points such that he can play as the chief goal threat or in games where his hold-up and industry is required, he can turn creator to good effect. Add to this, the fact that Toney’s on penalties for Brentford, he shows up as an asset with various routes to points that’ll tick over well for a mid-priced asset.

Brentford also begin a kind run of fixtures up until the point where a lot of managers might consider using their first wildcard, making him a great option to bring in this week.

FPL Gameweek 3 Transfer Tips: Two players to HOLD

1) Andrew Robertson (Liverpool, DEF, 7.0)

FPL Gameweek 3 Transfer Tips ~ player to hold ~ Andy Robertson

Premium defense has, by and large, done well for FPL managers this season with the notable exception of Andrew Robertson. He’s had just 1 shot and 0 key passes across Liverpool’s opening two games of the season, Liverpool failed to keep a clean sheet in either game and Robertson also got a surprise sub-off for Tsimikas just after the hour mark in the game against Crystal Palace.

With managers looking for a route – and hence funds – away from Bailey or Pedro Neto, Robertson appears to be a decent HOLD to me (unless he’s the only route to Reece James). The Liverpool fullback has made marauding runs on the underlap and has taken up positions on the inside left flank in and around the penalty box with regularity across the 2 fixtures. Even though possession hasn’t quite fallen to him to be able to threaten the goal from these areas, the fact that he’s occupying these zones in open play is encouraging and seems to be like it’s only a matter of time before the points will come for him.

Liverpool’s defense has looked relatively shaky in these 2 games but they have a kind run in their next 4-5 games suggesting clean sheets should hopefully return too.

At his price, he might seem like a luxury player and it’s tempting to move away but I still think he will provide better value than nearly every midfielder/forward at his price across the next 5 games.

The heat map from the Crystal Palace game is shown below, note the ‘heat’ zones in the final third.

2) Aleksandar Mitrovic (Fulham, FWD, 6.6m)

Mitrovic followed his heroics against Liverpool on opening day by returning a negative score in GW2 against Wolves courtesy of a missed penalty. Fulham now embark on a difficult run of games including away trips to Arsenal and Spurs and home ties against Chelsea and Brighton in their next 5.

Still, as he showed in the first game against Liverpool, Mitrovic has the ability to score against any opposition in the league. Fulham look a well-drilled side that are capable of creating chances for him against any team. A negative score and a missed penalty might look bad but the fact that he’s on penalties is a significant feather in his cap for his FPL output.

Mitrovic has had 7 shots and created 2 chances across the 2 games and his heatmap against Wolves shown below shows how he operates in the penalty box giving him perpetual goalthreat as the focal point of this Fulham side.

FPL Gameweek 3 Transfer Tips: Two players to SELL

1) Jadon Sancho (Manchester United, MID, 7.4m)

Big things were expected from Sancho having completed a season of acclimatization to English Football and with the arrival of a new coach expected to play front-foot football. Signs during pre-season were very encouraging however it has been a challenging start to the season for Sancho and for Manchester United.

The English winger has had 0 shots in the 2 games this season and created 4 chances with a total xA of 0.21. He was substituted off at the hour-mark this weekend in a defeat against Brentford suggesting his xMins may not be as secure as was once believed to be the case. His heat map shows the majority of his activity deep, in the right half-space, further away from goal than we’d want from an FPL asset.

Still owned by over 6% of FPL managers, Sancho is by no means a bad FPL asset and he remains a hugely talented player. There will be a time for FPL managers to give him strong consideration in their squads. At this current moment, with player and club struggling, it’s not the right one.

2) Philippe Coutinho (Aston Villa, MID, 6.9m)

Still owned by over 10% of FPL managers at the time of writing, Coutinho has struggled this season. Across the opening two games, he’s had 2 shots and 1 key pass with a total xGI of just 0.10 from both games combined.

In their Gameweek 2 fixture against Everton, Coutinho was subbed off for Emi Buendia as the #10 in the 4-3-1-2 shape and Buendia looked sharp, direct and even made a goalscoring impact on the game suggesting Coutinho’s starts might be in question in the upcoming games. Villa’s schedule in general also takes a turn for the worse. Still owned by a very high number of managers, it’s time to move from away Coutinho.

Watchlist

A shoutout to Ilkay Gundogan and Pascal Gross, two players putting up encouraging numbers and are firmly on our watchlist for security of minutes and replication of their performances thus far this season before making their way into our ‘BUY’ recommendations.
