FPL Gameweek 33 presents a huge opportunity for FPL managers to make some substantial gains. Whether you’re playing a chip or not this week, this is one of the most crucial gameweeks of the season. As such, let’s take a look at some of the teams and players to target for this week.
[Total_Soft_Poll id=”45″]
Man United
United’s double is very much one of either extreme. In Norwich City and Liverpool, they face the worst, and the second-best team in the league respectively. As such, that Liverpool fixtures should in many ways be treated as a bit of a bonus.
Even taking into account United’s recent mediocrity, the Norwich game should be fruitful for them and thus investment should be considered, whether free hitting or not.
Of the players to target, Bruno Fernandes £11.6M is probably the safest bet. He surmounted a mammoth 23 points in United’s previous double of Aston Villa and Brentford, admittedly a far easier pair of fixtures, and was one of the few players in a red shirt to take any credit from the defeat to Everton. With many considering selling Mohamed Salah following a relatively sparse run of form, Bruno may be the ideal replacement, particularly seeing as Liverpool don’t have a double gameweek.
Jadon Sancho £8.9M:
Sancho has been one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise very dysfunctional attack. A total of two goals and three assists in his last 8 games sees him the most in form United attacker. If you’re looking at a long-term investment, he may be worth saving the money on Bruno. In any case, there’s a conceivable argument to be made that Sancho is the best option from United irrespective of his price.

Cristiano Ronaldo £12.2M:
Ronaldo’s form has been far from reflective of his premium price over the past couple of months. He has only returned in 2 of his last 13 fixtures and has seen his ownership plummet as a result, particularly because of the reemergence of Harry Kane as a premium forward option. However, if you fancy a one-week punt, or you’re chasing and want to do something different to gain rank, it might be worth making the switch from Kane to Ronaldo, if only for the very short term. Of those two games in which he returned, one of them was a 17-pointer against Tottenham and if he can do something similar this week, you’ll be on to huge gains.
If there’s one thing we know about Ronaldo, it’s that he often rises to the big occasion, and the fixture against Liverpool next Wednesday is exactly that. When he has returned this season, it has generally been against the weaker teams so Norwich presents a prime opportunity to rediscover his form.

Alex Telles £5.0M:
There has been a growing movement towards Telles as this week has progressed. He now clearly has favour over Luke Shaw and is set to start both matches in the double. He also gets down the left flank relatively well so there’s a slight chance of an attacking return.
However, United have only kept 7 clean sheets all season so even Norwich would fancy their chances of grabbing a goal. Furthermore, there are numerous defensive options with two games in GW33 that I believe will outscore any United defenders so Telles may well be a double gameweek trap.

Leicester City:
Leicester arguably have the best pair of fixtures in GW33. Away trips to A Newcastle United side who have nothing to play for now that they have all but ensured safety and an Everton team who’s woes have been well documented present a potentially excellent opportunity. If you’re free hitting, Leicester are probably the team you’d be most likely to triple up on. Even if you aren’t it may be worth taking hits to bring multiple assets in. In addition to the upcoming gameweek, Leicester have another appealing double-double to come in GW36 & 37 and have fairly decent fixtures on either side of that in general so they could be a shrewd long-term investment as well as a short-term one.
What’s more, their form has taken a considerable upturn recently. They have achieved 4 wins and a draw in their last 6 fixtures and were unlucky to come away with just a point from their visit to Old Trafford in GW31.
James Maddison
£7.0M has been integral to their recent form. His assist against United, along with a disallowed goal that many felt should have stood, was his 4th return in 7 games and he notched another assist in GW32 against Crystal Palace. If there’s one thing we know about the mercurial attacker, it’s that he’s very much a confidence player and that must be sky high at this moment in time. Taking into account Man United’s second fixture, he could quite possibly be the best option for captaincy this week.

Harvey Barnes £6.6M
has also been in great form recently. Despite his returns not quite matching those of Maddison, he has been quite unlucky in a number of matches and has the potential to be explosive in any given match.
Arguably their best player in recent weeks has been Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall £4.6M: His goal and assist against Crystal Palace brought more attention to him but in truth, he has been excellent for a prolonged period of time. If you’ve still got the bench boost, he could be the ideal fifth midfielder. There’s even an argument for him being a starter in your teams despite his price in order to enable you to invest heavily in other areas of your squad.
As for the strikers, it’s difficult to predict which two of Jamie Vardy, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Patson Daka will start from one week to another so it’s probably not worth investing in one of those.
From a defensive point of view, they have been a lot more solid since the return of Wesley Fofana, although they have only kept 2 clean sheets in their last 5 fixtures. As such, Luke Thomas £4.3M could be a decent option if you’re looking for a budget player.
Newcastle United
A couple of months ago, you’d have been hard-pressed to find anyone who could have predicted we’d be recommending Newcastle assets at any point this season. However, a few shrewd signings, some astute management and a relatively appealing double later and here we are. Neither Leicester nor Crystal Palace present especially difficult tasks and given how they have performed since the turn of the year, they could well get results in both.
If you take out the anomaly of the 5-1 beating they suffered at the hands of Tottenham, Newcastle have been a far more improved defensive outfit. Fabian Schar £4.4M has been attracting some attention and his goal against Tottenham will only increase movement towards him. Out of all of the defensive options, he is probably the one that presents the highest upside.
As far as attackers are concerned, there isn’t a great deal to get excited about. Ryan Fraser was probably their most appealing asset but seeing as he went off injured late into the match against Wolves, he may not be in the picture for GW33.
Aside from him, neither Joe Willock nor Alan Saint-Maximin has been particularly consistent and Chris Wood’s penalty last time out was his second goal in a Newcastle shirt and only his fourth of the season so he is hardly an enticing option.

Brentford
Generally speaking, Brentford aren’t the kind of team you’d be targeting in any given gameweek, let alone one in which they don’t have a double and many others do. Their inclusion is as much down to their GW33 opponents as it is to them. Such was the level of performance that the Watford side put in against Leeds, it would have been difficult to overlook whoever their GW33 opponent would be.
Moreover, Brentford have become a free-scoring team since Cristian Ericksen came into the team and both he, £5.7M, and Ivan Toney £6.9M are very viable options, even if they don’t have a double this week.
Ericksen has provided a goal and an assist in his last 4 whilst Toney has accumulated a seriously impressive 6 goals and 2 assists in his last 5 outings, although it must be said that there were three penalties in there.
