With two weeks of winter break ahead of us, many footballers have got a much-needed break from football while us FPL managers have got a break from head-scratching before the game weeks and the disappointments after them. But, if you want to stay two steps ahead of the other managers you’ve got to start planning your next moves early.
Salah is very likely to return ahead of GW24 and whether or not Klopp includes him in the starting lineup right away is yet to be seen, getting him into your fantasy teams right away should be in your plans.
All FPL managers filled the void left by Salah in their teams in different ways. Getting Kane, Son, Kevin de Bruyne, Bruno or Ronaldo was one way. While some chose to go for value picks and have funds in the bank in case a “premium” player picks up form. If you have done a straight swap from Salah to one of the premium midfielders, it should be relatively easy to get Salah back in but for the FPL managers that have their funds spread around the team, it will be difficult to get in a highly-priced Salah with just one transfer.
A bunch of FPL managers will need to rely on budget enablers to either get in Salah or get in Salah and keep their current premium in their squads. This post is about identifying and analyzing these budget enablers as FPL assets.

Budget Players- Defenders
Davinson Sanchez(4.6)
Ever since Antonio Conte walked in through the doors of Tottenham, Davinson Sanchez has been handed an opportunity to resurrect his career and Sanchez has grabbed his opportunity with both hands. He has been a part of a Tottenham defense that has done exceptionally well. He also has a higher ceiling for points than his teammate Eric Dier because of his larger goal threat. Sanchez has two goals in the premier league this season from an xG tally of 1.57. He’ll be a great asset for consistent clean sheet points and the occasional goal contributions.
Eric Dier(4.6)
If you are not very convinced about Davinson Sanchez but want to cover the Tottenham defense in your FPL team, Eric Dier is a great asset to own. Eric Dier was a consistent starter before Conte took the job at Tottenham and it’s unlikely that he’ll be dropped from the first team unless he picks up an injury. He was injured recently but played 90 minutes against Chelsea, so that shouldn’t be a problem. Eric Dier offers very little when it comes to potential points from goals and assists but if you want a player that can score consistent points with clean sheets, he should be on your watchlist.
Davinson Sanchez vs Eric Dier (2021-22 season)
- Matches played (Starts): 19(19) vs 14(12)
- Goals: 2 vs 0
- Big chances: 3 vs 1
- Expected Goals: 1.57 vs 0.86
- Expected Assists: 0.46 vs 1.50

The statistics suggest that Sanchez has a higher ceiling for points, but Dier might be more nailed on the starting lineup. Getting either of them will be a smart move as it does not only free up funds but they are very likely to keep a clean sheet. Spurs are likely to have a DGW26 too.

Diogo Dalot(4.5)
Manchester United will have a DGW25 and will play Southampton and Brighton. Alex Telles is probably the best FPL asset to cover Manchester United defense but if you are falling short on cash to get the Brazillian left-back in why not get in his right-sided counterpart? Dalot does not have any goals or assists so far this season but has nailed down a position in the starting XI under Ralf Ragnick. Manchester United has started to look a lot better recently and managed to keep a clean sheet against a strong West Ham United side. Manchester United plays Burnley, Southampton, and Brighton over the next two game weeks, all of whom have a similarity. They are among the best defenses outside of the top 6 sides but struggle in front of the goal. That only makes the case for getting in Dalot stronger.
Diogo Dalot vs Alex Telles
- Matches Played (Starts): 12(7) vs 9(8)
- Assists: 0 vs 1
- Expected Goals: 0.3 vs 0.2
- Expected Assists: 0.3 vs 0.6
Pontus Jansson(4.6)
Brentford started the season off very well for a club that is playing Premier League football for the first time in their history but the performances started to worsen after the first few weeks. They have done well to stay away from the relegation zone but have conceded a lot more goals than their expected goals conceded tally which indicates bad defensive displays. But, they have a favorable run of games from GW25 to GW29. They also have a postponed game yet to be rescheduled, which means they could have a DGW soon. Pontus Jansson has a respectable offensive record with an xG tally of 2.16 and an xA tally of 0.49. If you still hold your wildcard, getting in Jansson isn’t a very bad idea at all.
Honorable mentions.
- Joel Veltman
- Rayan Ait Nouri
- Marc Guehi
Budget Players- Midfielders
Jacob Ramsey(4.6)
Jacob Ramsey is enjoying his breakthrough season. He has been phenomenal ever since he was introduced into the first team by Dean Smith and the appointment of Steven Gerrard has not changed that. He is probably the best budget midfielder in the game at the moment with three goals and an assist to his name. The signing of Phillipe Coutinho does not seem to have affected his game time either. He has accumulated an xG of 1.8 and an xA of 1.6 which is great for a player at his price point.
Jakub Moder(4.5)
Jakub Moder plays in a variety of positions for Brighton but more recently he has been playing as a wide midfielder in a 4-4-2 or a central midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 for Brighton. He has three assists this season from an xA of 2.05 and is yet to score but has accumulated an xG tally of 1.72. The underlying stats are decent, indicating he could return great points in the near future. Injuries and AFCON have let Moder get more game time and he will continue like this for a few more weeks, making him a decent budget enabler.

Anthony Gordon(4.5)
Anthony Gordon is another player on this list having an amazing breakthrough season. Despite an underwhelming few weeks for Everton, Gordon has been a bright spark. He has a great pass on him and can unlock defenses quite easily. He hasn’t become a regular yet but Everton has yet to decide on a new coach after the departure of Rafa Benitez which could open the door to regular first-team football for him. Speaking of stats, he has accumulated an xG of 1.34 and an xA of 1.78 which is great considering he has played only 903 minutes. He has translated these underlying stats into 2 goals and an assist which makes him a great pick too.

Budget Players- Forwards
Armando Broja(5.2)
Armando Broja’s spectacular performances have attracted interest from Premier League clubs like West Ham United and Newcastle United, while Southampton is looking to make his loan deal from Chelsea permanent. He has scored 5 goals from an xG of 4.0 and 6 big chances and has 2 assists from an xA of 0.9. If you are looking to get a more affordable forward while giving up little points, Broja should be your pick.
Joshua Sargent(5.4)
Joshua Sargent finally scored his first Premier League goal against Watford in GW23 and he did so in style, scoring a brace against the Hornets. While Pukki has been the main man for goals at Norwich, there have been more goal scorers for Norwich since Dean Smith took over. His underlying statistics indicate he should start scoring more frequently soon.
Statistics- Josh Sargent:
- Expected Goals: 1.79
- Expected Assists: 0.9
- Big chances/90: 0.25
- Shots/90: 1.51
- npxG/90: 0.15
Joe Gelhardt(4.6)
If you have 5 midfielders that are good enough to start every week, then Leeds’ Joe Gelhardt should offer an interesting option. He has played 8 games, starting 2 of them and racking up 318 minutes. He has 1 goal, 3 assists in those 318 minutes. All this while accumulating an xG and xA tally of 1.4 and 0.84 respectively. He passes the eye test too. His quick turn of pace and sharp dribbling only expand his potential for points from winning penalties and fouls for BPS. Bielsa has put faith in the ability of academy players at Leeds and Patrick Bamford is struggling with injuries this season which could mean the young Joe Gelhardt might make a push for regular first-team football.
