Firstly let me take you through my personal journey and aim to target a successful rank and have a great campaign.

Note: This article was put together starting on the 8th November, although it’s international break stats will either slightly improve or decline with players playing for both their countries and their clubs on the weekend before the UCL returns.

UCL Fantasy Matchday 4 Team/Rank Review

UCL Fantasy Matchday 4 Team/Rank Review

You will see once again I had a very successful matchday. 111 points returned by my team in matchday 4, this saw me rise from my 6k rank to an insane 282nd in the world.

Captaining Lewandowski was detrimental for many to determine how peoples matchday 4 went but with budget options Danjuma and Rulli returning, the Chelsea double defence , and regular hot form players like Cancelo and Sane performing it gave me that huge boost I needed to get into the position I am now.

With what did happen going right I also have to look at what went wrong. My Salzburg double failed to perform this week but with a game up next against Lille you’ll see why I want to stick with them I’m sure. Alonso being a huge rotation risk is also a definite transfer out as well, but we’ll move into that a bit later in the article.

Top Picks for UCL matchday 5

Here we are. The meat of the article. I’ll be giving you the best options out there which can be used and targeted by not only the wildcard and limitless chip but for those with transfers looking to attack the matchday ahead.

UCL matchday 5 Goal Keepers

Manuel Neuer

Manuel Neuer ~ UCL matchday 5 Goal Keepers

Team: Bayern

Cost: 6.2 million

Ownership: 17%

In their last 10 Bayern have only managed 3 clean sheets which would usually be quite concerning when buying into a pricey fantasy asset. What is interesting though is that the German giants have managed 3/4 clean sheets in the UCL campaign so far suggesting their much better defensively in the champions league.

What you see is what you get with the price. 6.2 million is expensive for a goal  keeper but so far the German shot stopper holds the most points amongst all goal keepers in the game so far with 23 points.

3 clean sheets for Neuer including an incredible assist in his last match out against Benfica. A return in every match he’s played. A very reliable fantasy asset.

Bayern come up against Dynamo Kyiv next whom in their last 10 have lost 4 and have failed to score in another 4 matches. They’ve also only drawn one match in their UCL campaign so far and lost the other 3 games played.

Bayern play on the Tuesday early kickoff which means not only do we get to see their lineup we can also switch Neuer out if he doesn’t perform on the Wednesday.

For me Neuer offers security of clean sheets against most teams, with the Bayern defence looking solid in the UCL and up against an inconsistent team in Dynamo Kyiv , I think Neuer could be a great option especially if you are using the limitless chip.

Philipp Kohn

Philipp Köhn ~ UCL matchday 5 Goal Keepers

Team: Salzburg

Cost: 4.5 million

Ownership: 0%

Salzburg as a team in the UCL continue to surprise everyone. After 4 matches they reign at the top of their group above the rest when many people had written them off before the competition started.

Although yet to find a clean sheet in the UCL group just yet Salzburg in their last 10 matches have only lost one game, the one being against their last UCL opponents Wolfsburg.

Just 3 clean sheets for Salzburg in their last 10 matches in all competitions which isn’t fantastic. However when you take into the really nice price point that Kohn sits at (4.5 million) it feels better in terms of value for money.

The young Swiss goal keeper has played 13 matches for Salzburg so far this season, not only nailing down his first team position but also clinching 6 clean sheets in the same time, returning in just under half of his matches played. Good value for money in my opinion.

Interestingly Salzburg matchup against French team Lille in matchday 5. Inconsistent is a word best used in Lille’ recent form after winning 4, losing 3 and drawing the other 3 matches in their last 10 games played in all competitions.

Kohn plays in the first day of matchday 5 with the option to swap him out on the Wednesday if he doesnt perform for you on the Tuesday. Against a very inconsistent opponent , in a team in good form and at a price that’s easily accessible and attractive in enabling the rest of the team, I think he good be a great option for managers in matchday 5.

Remko Pasveer

Remko Pasveer ~ UCL matchday 5 Goal Keepers

Team: Ajax

Cost: 4.9 million

Ownership: 2%

Firstly Ajax have officially ruled out their original first team goal keeper Stekelenburg for the remainder of the season with an injury that will require an operation to return to full recovery. Whilst we wish him a speedy recovery we can rest assured from a fantasy perspective that Pasveer is now nailed as the first team keeper.

Ajax have shown the world countless times to never under estimate them and this season their currently doing it again. The attacking stats are irrelevant in terms of a goal keeper but their general form is not. Only 1 loss in their last 10 matches. 2 in their last 20 matches and 2 in their last 30 matches going further back. Incredible form.

Defensively fantastic. 8 clean sheets in their last 10 matches for Ajax so far. 13 in their last 20 matches going further back. The recent form however one of the best in Europe amongst elite teams and wait until you hear the attacking stats further in the article.

Pasveer himself since taking over the reigns as first team goal keeper has done a fantastic job. In his domestic league he has managed an amazing 8 clean sheets from 9 matches, again one of the best in Europe amongst the elite clubs.

Originally a 4.5 million priced goal keeper his performances have seen Remko surge in price and for good reason. 4.9 million now and still great value for money. With a great 2.3 saves per match (82% save rate) domestically Pasveer also gives you haul potential. Exactly what you want with any fantasy asset.

Ajax come up against a team that are in horrendous form. 7 losses in their last 10 matches show Besiktas to be one of the worst teams in the UCL group stages in terms of form. Failing to score in 2 or their last 3 matches indicates the bad form is now reflecting on their goal scoring capabilities as well.

Playing for one of the most elite defences in Europe based on recent defensive stats, at a great price point and against a woeful opponent , Pasveer simply has to be considered whether you are using a chip or not.

Samir Handanovic

Samir Handanovic ~ UCL matchday 5 Goal Keepers

Team: Inter

Cost: 5.7 million

Ownership: 3%

Handanovic at 37 years old keeps going strong. With the nailed first-team position locked down, he continues his long career at the top level.

It’s fair to say there isn’t many clean sheets in Italian football at the moment even amongst some of the best keepers and that doesn’t change for Samir. With only 3 clean sheets in his last 10 matches both Handanovic and Inter are still finding their feet defensively. What is interesting is that 2 of those 3 clean sheets have come in the last 4 matches. A sign of defensive improvement for Inter maybe.

With only 1 clean sheet in the 4 UCL matches played Handanovic will be seeking his second against his next opponent in Shakhtar.

After failing to score in a huge 3 out of the 4 matches in the UCL they’ve played, Shakhtar are looking blunt in attack. A perfect opportunity for Handanovic and Inter to claim another clean sheet.

Samir also has an edge. He’s also made 3.3 saves per game domestically showing big potential for save points. Another key element in a goal keeper haul of points.

With a great fixture against a team struggling for goals in the UCL Handanovic becomes a great option for matchday 5. His save rate also adds to his potential here. A great option that many using the limitless chip may favour.

UCL matchday 5 Defenders ~ Top Picks

Joshua Kimmich

Joshua Kimmich ~ UCL matchday 5 Defenders ~ Top Picks

Team: Bayern

Cost: 6.7 million

Ownership: 26%

Such high ownership and that is only reflected in the reasons listed below as to why Kimmich should make your teams for matchday 5.

There are rumors of rotation from well seasoned UCL fantasy players in regards to Bayern Munich but what makes this irrelevant is the fact that we’ll get to see the Bayern lineups as they are the early Tuesday kickoff. This allows us to see those lineups and react and Kimmich could be one of those reactions.

Bayern as a team are very good to say the least with many people listing them as one of their favorites to go all the way. This is reflected in their UCL form. However, their domestic form has taken a slight dip especially defensively.

Only 3 clean sheets in the last 10 matches for Bayern. Surprising to many I imagine. In the UCL however, their form is much better, after 4 matches played the German giants have kept 3 clean sheets.

Bayern’s opponent’s equally consistent in the UCL is that they’re consistently poor. No goals scored in any of their 4 champions league matches, showing a huge lack of attacking capabilities, especially when they’ve played a leaky Barcelona and Benfica in that same period.

A huge chance for a clean sheet in an impressive in form UCL team and against a woeful opponent in terms of going forward however we don’t just buy into defenders because of their defensive capabilities do we?

Kimmich offers something that many assets in the game do not. He is an out-of-position player,  meaning that the game have him classed as a defender but is not. He is a midfielder which is a huge advantage already over many other defender assets with the potential of attacking returns due to being further up the pitch.

Joshua Kimmich heat map below:

Joshua Kimmich heat map below

You’ll see huge patches of movement in the opponent’s half and central to the pitch where his position predominantly is. You’ll also see movement both outside and inside the opponent’s box which is another indicator that Kimmich has huge potential for attacking returns.

Focusing more on his stats. In the 15 matches played so far in all competitions, Kimmich had managed 7 clean sheets, creating 3 assists and scoring 3 goals. Combining to 13 points returns in 15 matches, a hugely successful season so far for the German.

34 goals scored by Bayern in their last 10 matches, averaging 3.4 goals and sitting amongst the top scoring teams on average in Europe in that same period. Plenty of goals to go around and another showing of Kimmich’s potential in that he plays for a team that can score plenty of goals in any given match.

Kimmich plays for one of the best teams in the UCL, proven to be both defensively and offensively ruthless. Combining that with him being an out-of-position player in-game and against a poor opponent makes him a great option for any player in UCL MD5 and an essential for those using limitless.

Rasmus Kristensen

Rasmus Kristensen ~ UCL matchday 5 Defenders ~ Top Picks

Team: Salzburg

Cost: 4.8 million

Ownership: 1%

Already you’ll see that Kristensen is both a differential in his low ownership and playing for Salzburg, a team that has surprised a lot of people going into the UCL campaign.

This type of price tag has an instant benefit to the rest of your team in that it enables those pricey attacking options elsewhere as there are so many of them in form and vital to the balance of a very good squad.

Defensively it’s hard to expect much at that price tag from Kristensen. 13 matches played with Salzburg domestically and 5 clean sheets feels ok especially when some of the ‘bigger’ teams are posting numbers worse or equal to that.

Lille, Salzburg’s next opponent sit 12th in their domestic league. In their last 10 matches have won 4, drawn 3, and lost 3,  a show of huge inconsistency and giving Salzburg and Kristensen even more potential for the clean sheet.

Attacking wise Kristensen remains a hidden gem. You know from his ownership that he is hidden, but what makes him a gem?

Rasmus Kristensen heat map below:

This heat map will never cease to amaze me in terms of his positioning. A huge show of movement in the opposition half and much more than in his own half. You’ll even see a massive patch of darker red in the opponents box where Kristensen loves to make darting runs and offensive movements predominantly from the right. Such an impressive heat map and showing already huge potential.

Domestically after playing 13 matches Kristensen has managed a fantastic 4 goals scored and created 3 assists, combine those 7 attacking returns to his 5 clean sheets and that’s 12 returns in 13 matches. Arguably premium defender points returns for Kristensen.

Another huge indication that reflects Kristensen’s potential is that he recently took a penalty when Adeyemi was subbed off around the 60th and although he missed he could still well be taking them in the absence of Adeyemi.

At such a low price, playing for an inform team Kristensen simply has to be considered. With fantastic attacking stats and an unbelievable heat map the young Dane could also be second in line on penalties and against an inconsistent team he could be a fantastic option for UCL MD5 whether your using a chip or not.

Davide Zappacosta

Davide Zappacosta  ~ UCL matchday 5 Defenders ~ Top Picks

Team: Atalanta

Cost: 4.3 million

Ownership: 2%

At first glance, the price catches the eye. A 4.3 million-priced player has its attractions because not only does he play he also enables the expensive attacking options with his price. Something that as mentioned already, is very important in finding a team balance and being able to get the hot in form players in without going over budget.

Starting the last 5 matches in all competitions solidifies Zappacosta to the first team in terms of reliability of minutes. He’s also started all UCL matches in Atalanta’s campaign so far, another show that he’s important to the first team and a reliable asset for starts.

Defensively Atalanta have been poor, similar to many other teams in Serie A because of the sheer vast quality going forward there’s a lack of clean sheets everywhere. Only 1 in the last 10 matches.

Interestingly the only other clean sheet Atalanta kept was against Young Boys in matchday 2. Some potential there to pull another one-off for Atalanta and Zappacosta.

Young boys are currently within a really inconsistent period of form. With only one win in their last 3 and only 2 wins in their last 6 Young Boys are struggling to put some wins together. Even in their last 20 matches, they’ve managed to lose 11 of those games. Failing to score in 4 of their last 10 matches as well Atalanta will feel like there is a good chance to clinch back-to-back clean sheets against their upcoming opponents.

In terms of going forward, Atalanta are very good. They currently sit 4th in Serie A at the time of writing this with 21 goals scored in their last 10, averaging 2.1 goals per match which is impressive.

Specifically focusing on Zappacosta, let’s take a look at his heat map below:

Davide Zappacosta heatmap

You’ll clearly see attacking motivation from him spending more time in the opposition’s half than his own. On top of that, you’ll also see darker red inside the opposition’s box and even close to the 6-yard box which shows huge potential and indicates attacking returns are imminent on a regular basis.

After 11 matches in Serie A Zappacosta has managed one goal and 3 assist with another assist in the champions league. Not fantastic stats but at his price against a Young Boys who have conceded 17 goals in their last 10 with an average of 1.7 goals conceded in that same time, it looks really positive for Zappacosta.

At just 4.3 million you could arguably price Zappacosta much higher for UCL MD5. With fantastic offensive positioning against an inconsistent team and with the ability to enable the addition of inform players into your teams, Zappacosta makes the top picks for the upcoming UCL matchday 5.

Noussair Mazraoui

Noussair Mazraoui  ~ UCL matchday 5 Defenders ~ Top Picks

Team: Ajax

Cost: 4.9 million

Ownership: 5%

Ajax have been phenomenal during the season so far domestically and in their UCL campaign. Whilst many will focus on their attack, their defence is equally impressive.

One thing I personally like this week is the defensive double-up, whether that be using a defender and a goalkeeper or have two defenders.

Ajax and Mazraoui have been fantastic defensively this season and that shows in their last 10 matches we’ve already seen they’ve kept a massive 8 clean sheets in that time. Going further back another 4 clean sheets in their first 7 matches of the season combining to 12 in their 17 played. Their recent form though even more impressive.

Showing good defensive form in their UCL campaign with 2 clean sheets in the 4 matches played so far clinching one of them convincingly against fierce German club Dortmund.

Mazraoui started the UCL campaign with a 4.5 million price tag and he also made the very first edition of these articles. Now 4.9 million Noussair still shows the fantastic value for money and not just in a defensive sense.

Firstly let’s take a look at his heat map:

Noussair Mazraoui heatmap

An incredible heat map in an attacking sense, You’ll see that Mazraoui plays on the right side but also spends a huge amount of his time attacking the opponent’s half. Not only that and this is what impressed me the most, he attacks the opposition’s box that much that he actually shows a large chunk of darker red inside the box and close to the 6-yard box. A clear reflection of great attacking potential already.

His average sofa score rating is 7.63 this season, showing just how well he’s playing.

In the 11 club matches Mazraoui has played he’s scored an impressive 4 goals, created 2 assists, and kept 6 clean sheets. That’s 12 points returns in 11 matches in a fantasy sense. A brilliant ratio for a 4.9 million defender.

Ajax and Mazraoui face a woeful form Besiktas next that in the reverse fixture were swept aside 2-0 and who have failed to score in 2/3 of their last matches played, losing all 3.

Mazraoui at 4.9 million is still arguably underpriced. Playing for a defensively strong team against an out-of-form Besiktas,  Mazraoui could really utilize his attacking output combined with the potential of the clean sheet to return big in matchday 5, and for that reason could be a fantastic option.

Daley Blind

Daley Blind  ~ UCL matchday 5 Defenders ~ Top Picks

Team: Ajax

Cost: 5.4 million

Ownership: 6%

Blind makes my 3rd Ajax defensive option. The double or even triple for those that date could be on. Although very risky as always in any situation or team, this could also have a high reward. Sticking to the double-up feels still very beneficial.

We’ve already discussed Ajax’s strength in the backline and Blind has a huge part to play in those impressive numbers too. With 8 clean sheets, this season in all competitions and playing every match Blind is as relied upon as Pasveer and Mazraoui if not more.

Daley Blind heatmap

Daley Blind heatmap

Another impressive heat map from another Ajax defender. Similar to Mazraoui but on the opposite side to the pitch, Blind is a threat. His positioning remains stronger in comparison to his heat map in his own half and that he spends a lot more time in the opposition half. Even better similar to his teammate Mazraoui he shows impressive patches of positioning in the opponent’s box. This is exactly what we want in our defensive assets.

It’s also worth noting that Blind is the second highest point returner amongst defenders in the entire UCL fantasy game above the likes of Trent, Kimmich, Rudiger, and lots more favorites. 23 points returned against Dortmund helped this. A goal, an assist, a clean sheet, player of the match, and 9 ball recoveries all being part of the huge haul in matchday 3, a great showing of potential.

Although a bit more expensive Blind has the potential to explode with points and against a very poor Besiktas side, we could really see him do well similar to his teammates at the back.

A great asset with a great fixture and playing in a very good team defensively is enough to make Blind a top pick for UCL matchday 5, for those using chips and those not using them.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold ~ UCL matchday 5 Defenders ~ Top Picks

Team: Liverpool

Cost: 6.4 million

Ownership: 25%

Already you can see that a huge quarter of players that play the game own Trent. The 3rd most expensive defender behind Hakimi and Kimmich.

Trent currently sits as the 2nd highest scoring defender in Fantasy Premier League, 3 points behind Man City’ Cancelo. Not only that but he’s also the 3rd highest points scorer in the entire game amongst all positions behind only Salah and again Cancelo which is very impressive.

In terms of Liverpool defensively 4 clean sheets clinched in the last 10 matches, which feels impressive when you take into account the fixtures they’ve played, Atletico Madrid twice, Man United, Man City, and Porto.

Underlying stats in the premier league also support that they currently have a great defence and could keep a clean sheet against anyone on any given day. In the Premier Liverpool are the:

  • 3rd best for clean sheets (6)
  • 2nd best for shots conceded outside of the box.
  • 2nd best for shots conceded.
  • 3rd best for shots on target conceded.
  • 3rd best for attempts from set plays conceded.
  • 4th best for big chances conceded

The list goes on and shows just how good the Liverpool defence can be supporting the clean sheet for Liverpool in Coming up against a tough opponent in PSG next up maybe a little worrying but when you look at Cancelo attacking potential mixed with his high rate of ball recoveries he still has to be hugely considered. For me a top pick for UCL MD5.

Make no mistake, Trent is one of the best-attacking defenders in the world. Let’s take a look at how much potential Trent has offensively for matchday 5. Take a look at his heat map below:

Unlike many attacking defenders you’ll see quite the thickness to his movement in the opposition’s half showing he doesn’t just run down the wings like most fullbacks he also drifts comfortably towards the center. This reflects just how much space the opponents allow him.

You’ll also see from the heat map that he takes the corners which boosts his assists returns. Trent also takes most free kicks and in the last match domestically scored directly from a free-kick set play. A huge show of his qualities and the potential Trent brings for his owners.

Underlying numbers also emphasize just how much potential Trent has. He is:

  • 2nd in the entire league for big chances created only behind teammate Salah.
  • 2nd for chances created in the entire league only behind Bruno Fernandes.
  • 2nd for goal attempts amongst defenders behind Cancelo

Domestically this season Trent has played 9 matches, scored 1 goal, created 4 assists, and kept 4 clean sheets combining to 9 points returns in 9 matches. In the UCL he’s also created another 3 fantasy assists in the 3 matches he’s played. In total 12 returns in 12 matches showing an elite level of reliability.

Although 2nd in the group Porto, Liverpool’s next opponent were flattened 5-1 in their last fixture against each other which Trent unfortunately missed. This time Liverpool play at Anfield where many tip them for both the win and clean sheet.

Trent, although expensive shows a fantastic returning record in terms of matches played through clean sheets, assists, and goals. His underlying stats show him to be in amazing form and a constant threat to the opposition. Playing at home against a team they blitzed 5-1 last time out Trent becomes a fantastic option for Coming up against a tough opponent in PSG next up maybe a little worrying but when you look at Cancelo attacking potential mixed with his high rate of ball recoveries he still has to be hugely considered. For me a top pick for UCL MD5.

Joao Cancelo

Joao Cancelo ~ UCL matchday 5 Defenders ~ Top Picks

Team: Man City

Cost: 6.3 million

Ownership: 16%

Owners of Cancelo already in UCL fantasy like myself will already know just how good he is. A fantastic and relentless asset in UCL fantasy so far and if that doesn’t convince you let’s get into it.

Playing for Man City is already a huge indication that Cancelo could be a great asset. Playing for one of the favorites for the champions league every season or at least it seems has its benefits of course.

Defensively Man City haven’t hit the heights of last season just yet. Only 4 clean sheets in their last 10 matches for the English giants, not bad but not to their usual standard. Has Cancelo needed lots of clean sheets this season to return points? Absolutely not.

Firstly to ensure people about rotation. With Man City, there has always been a worry around buying into their players in fantasy games but this season for Cancelo he’s arguably nailed. He’s started every single Premier League game of the season so far playing 90 minutes in nearly every match. Combined with the fact he has also started every single UCL match as well highlights just how important Cancelo is to Pep and this Man City team.

Let’s take more of a look into his attacking attributes. See his heat map below:

Cancelo heatmap

You’ll see not only does Cancelo have great versatility in that he’s capable of playing both left and right defensively but he spends more time in the opposition half than he does his own. Vast movement outside the opponent’s box also reflects how attacking he is.

Looking at some more stats really does highlight how good Cancelo is going forward and how much potential he has in your teams. So far Cancelo is :

  • The highest scoring Man City player so far in the Fantasy Premier League, 17 points ahead of teammate Jesus.
  • The second highest point scorer in FPL in all positions, behind Salah.
  • 1st in the league for goal attempts amongst defenders.
  • 2nd for penalty area touches amongst all defenders

In the 11 matches played for Man City so far domestically, he has kept 7 clean sheets and created 4 assist with 11 returns in 11 matches. His form hasn’t stopped there. In the 4 matches Cancelo has played in the UCL so far he has kept 0 clean sheets but then has scored 2 goals and created 3 assists. A Fantastic show of attacking quality.

Coming up against a tough opponent in PSG next up maybe a little worrying but when you look at Cancelo attacking potential mixed with his high rate of ball recoveries he still has to be hugely considered. For me a top pick for UCL MD5.

UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Arnaut Danjuma

Arnaut Danjuma ~ UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Team: Villarreal

Cost: 6.4 million

Ownership: 4%

Many regular readers will know that I have been backing this guy since the beginning and for many reasons.

Danjuma at only 6.4 million is a big factor in his attraction. The game does lack good options around this price bracket which is a bracket that allows and enables us financially to go for the more expensive options with his inclusion. Good budget players are very important in seeking a good balance in your fantasy teams.

Villarreal are inconsistent just like the other teams in their UCL group in all competitions but are still very capable of scoring goals. 15 goals scored in their last 10 matches in all competitions showing an average of 1.5 goals per match which is ok. Factoring in specifically their UCL scoring form, 9 goals scored in their 4 matches played scoring 2 goals or more in 3/4 of those matches. Showing a real hunger for goals in the UCL.

Danjuma shows huge reliability of minutes and a first-team place due to starting for Villarreal in 10 out of their last 10 matches.

He was substituted in his last game with a knee injury which has now been confirmed by the manager as a tap and nothing serious, he also followed by mentioning that Danjuma will go to his international team to play during the break where international manager Van Gaal will monitor him.

Arnaut Danjuma heat map:

Arnaut Danjuma heat map

You’ll see in the heat map something I have mentioned before in a previous article in that although classed as a midfielder in the game similar to Salah he plays in a very advanced attacking position some would call out of position in terms in-game. This puts him in a much better position than most other midfielders in the game to get attacking returns. Also you’ll see incredible chunks of darker red positioning in the opponent’s box, which I personally don’t see in many other midfielder heat maps. A great indication that Danjuma is extremely attacking.

In terms of numbers, Arnaut Danjuma has them. In the 11 matches played so far domestically, he has managed 5 goals and created 1 assist. In the UCL Danjuma has also managed an attacking return in every match with 2 goals and 2 assists. Combined that’s 15 matches played and 10 attacking returns. Very good for a played priced at 6.4 million.

The opponent in UCL matchday 5, Man United. Not a team usually known for wanting to target but this Man United team is currently hugely struggling defensively. With only 2 clean sheets in their last 11 matches, United are on the rocks. In addition, they are yet to keep a clean sheet in the champions league after 4 matches played and conceded 7 goals in that same period. 19 goals conceded in the last 10 matches for a United, with 1.9 goals conceded average in that same period and showing massive potential for Danjuma to keep up his 100% returning rate in the UCL this season.

With a great enabling price Danjuna has great form, fixture, and amazing UCL returning points form to be a great UCL matchday 5 option.

Bayern Midfielders for UCL Matchday 5

You’ll see there’s no specific options just yet and that’s because it’s worth noting some other stuff first.

Being able to see one of the best-attacking team’s lineup is definitely something we should appreciate but we should still be very aware of rotation. That’s because Bayern have already qualified through to the last round of 16. This could potentially give Manager Nagelsmann the motivation to give some of his fringe attacking players a shot.

Bayern have eased their way through the group stages winning every single match and scoring 3 or more goals in every single one of those matches.

In their last 10 Bayern scored an unbelievable 34 goals, averaging 3.4 goals scored per match in that same period, another massive factor in why it’s essential to buy into the attack from a UCL Fantasy perspective.

In UCL matchday 5 their opponents are Dynamo Kyiv. In the reverse fixture, Bayern dismantled Kyiv 5-0. Not only that but they’ve failed to score a goal in their entire UCL campaign so far, drawing once and being beaten 3 times. The perfect fixture for whoever plays to do really well in.

In terms of the Bayern attack, their main in-game midfield primarily consists of Sane, Gnabry, Coman, and Musiala. All 4 should be considered and that is exactly why the Bayern midfield have a section dedicated to them. I’ll now rank them in order of which we should prioritize them.

Leroy Sane

Leroy Sane ~ UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Cost: 9.2 million

Ownership: 14%

Starting the majority of matches this season just shows how much Bayern rely on Sane. Having started the last 4 games in a row in all competitions and starting all of the UCL matches Bayern have played so far is another indication of how much he is regarded by manager Naglesmann.

Leroy Sane heat map below:

Leroy Sane heat map

You’ll see although versatile Sane plays predominantly on the left side. You can also see how attacking he is with plenty of movement in the opposition’s box.

So far this season, 11 matches played domestically, scoring 3 goals and 4 assists combining to 7 goal contributions in 11 games, not bad? Even more impressive is that in the 4 matches in the UCL played so far Sane has managed another 4 goals and created another 4 assists. Altogether that’s 15 matches played, 7 goals and 8 assists, an attacking return in every game played on average. Amazing form.

Sane’s form is very good but his UCL form is even better as you can see above. In terms of points returned those stats above meant he returned 51 points in the 4 matches played. An incredible feat that averages 12.75 points per match, an insane amount of points.

For me Sane takes the win out of all 4 attackers and if starting has to be the first midfielder in your starting lineup.

Serge Gnabry

Serge Gnabry ~ UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Cost: 10.2 million

Ownership: 1%

Initially quite surprised by his ownership and only being 1% owned. This could however be explained by the fact no one knows if Gnabry will start a match or not lately which is also reflected in his starts lately for Bayern. Only 1 start in the last 3 matches. Luckily we get to see those early lineups.

Coman heat map :

You can see that similar to Sane, Gnabry can be used anywhere in attack. Predominantly attacking from the right and plenty of movement in the opposition’s box which is promising.

For Germany in the Euro qualifiers, Gnabry managed 8 goals and 1 assist, accumulating to 9 attacking returns in his 8 played showing great form.

This season for Bayern although not as nailed as Sane seems to always feature if he doesn’t start. 11 matches played domestically with 6 goals. In the UCL campaign similar to Sane but with fewer minutes played he’s managed a return in every match. 4 matches played so far with 2 assists and 2 goals, 4 attacking returns in 4 matches. All together domestically and in the UCL that’s still a very fine 15 matches played, 8 goals scored and 2 assist, accumulating to 10 attacking returns in 15.

Although not as unbelievably prolific as Sane, Gnabry still posts some good stats. If Sane doesn’t start the match, then Gnabry would be the next best thing.

It’s worth noting that Wildcarders and limitless chip users wouldn’t be hugely affected by his price, however, due to Gnabry being priced higher than Sane this means that unless you have money banked already to make a straight switch if Sane doesn’t play this will then cost 2 transfers due to having to take money from another player to make this swap.

Kingsley Coman

Kingsley Coman ~ UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Cost: 8.4 million

Ownership: 0%

2 huge things we need to mention already is both his ownership and his price. At 0% ownership, Coman offers a differential option, something we could all do with in terms of making big ground rank-wise. His price is also very crucial in that if you own Sane and he doesn’t start it’s an easy move down to Coman without having to use any extra funds or an extra transfer. A very useful swap.

The 25-year-old Frenchman has had a few issues this season which has had an impact on his minutes but those slowly seem to be being resolved. His minutes increasing and with that his form. 3 starts in Bayern’s last 3 matches now reflect that growing confidence and reliance.

Kingsley Coman heat map:

Kingsley Coman heatmap

Predominantly playing on the right side similar to Gnabry and a factor in why Gnabry hasn’t been starting as many games lately. You’ll see above Coman loves to attack the wings and make surging runs into the box. A great indication of the potential he has already.

Last season for Bayern Coman 29 matches played scoring 5 goals and creating 10 assists. Not fantastic but still good.

This season in the 6 matches played domestically just 2 goals scored. In the UCL this season Coman has only started 2 , returning in both matches with an assist and a player of the match.

Although stats don’t reflect how good he looks at the moment make no mistake Coman is still a very good option. If Sane doesn’t start and Coman does then the move between them looks like a good one.

Jamal Musiala

Jamal Musiala ~ UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Cost: 6.6 million

Ownership: 3%

The 18-year-old German already highly regarded as one to watch for the future has caught the eye of many around Europe with constant links and interest from elite clubs.

There is a huge factor that attracts me to Musiala and has for some time however his potential starts if they were to come were always going to come in the latter stages of the UCL group in the stage when Bayern were comfortable.

Musiala priced at 6.6 million could offer something no other team can. A midfielder playing for one of the best teams in Europe at a price that could make him a must-have if starting. The Bayern attack is expensive and there’s not a shed load of options in the game in terms of the midfield at this price range. Having a 6.6 million attacking midfielder starting for Bayern is something that would be hard to ignore even if you already owned 2 Bayern attackers.

Already playing for the German national team Musiala was provided with 6 starts where he created an assist and scored a goal.

This season for Bayern the 18-year-old is being progressively integrated into the Bayern attack with 10 matches played already this season, scoring 2 goals and creating 3 assists, impressive.

You’ll see from his heat map below that like most of the Bayern attackers he is very versatile in terms of positioning.

Jamal Musiala heatmap

I ranked Musiala 4th on this list due to the other attackers having experience and reliability of minutes but make no mistake if Musiala is in the starting lineup at 6.6 million it would be extremely difficult to ignore even with 1 or 2 Bayern attackers already in the team.

Noah Okafor

Noah Okafor ~ UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Team: Salzburg

Cost: 5.2 million

Ownership: 3%

Salzburg have somewhat took the UCL stages by storm in that not many expected them to do this well. Their exciting way of playing with their young manager has caught the eye of many. The huge performances have seen them top the group ahead of teams like Lille, Sevilla and Wolfsburg.

In terms of good form their in it. Only one loss in their last 10 matches, 1 loss in their last 20 matches and 2 losses in their last 30 matches in all competitions, Incredible form.

Salzburg not only have great win ratios to games played but their also firing the goals in. 22 goals scored in their last 10 matches in all competitions with an average of 2.2 goals scored in that same period. Another very good stat to show buying into the Salzburg attack could be very rewarding.

Salzburg come up against Lille again in UCL matchday 5 after beating them 2-1 in the reverse fixture.

Lille the opposite of Salzburg in terms of form. 4 wins, 3 losses and 3 draws in the same period Salzburg won 7, drawn 2 and lost 1 match. A significant difference in form between both teams.

10 goals conceded in the last 10 matches for Lille which isn’t bad however coming up against a team that average more than 2 goals per match and actually put 2 goals past them in the reverse fixture it doesn’t look good defensively for Lille but looks great for Salzburg offensively.

Specifically on Okafor. Reliability of minutes is a factor even in an asset as cheap as Okafor. Although guilty of not starting every so often still always features if he doesn’t start. He started the last 4 out of 5 matches and still featured and returned in the match he didn’t start.

His price is another factor. 5.2 million for a very attacking midfielder who plays in a forward role (out of position) which we’ll cover shortly, in a price bracket that struggles for good options and playing for a team that scores lots of goals. It’s too good to miss out on and it also enables big money assets around the rest of your team.

His position is also really attractive. Take a look at his heat map below:

Noah Okafor heatmap

You can see just how advanced he is. The game has him classed as a midfield, similar to the likes of Danjuma and Salah he actually plays in a forward role, being closer to the opponents goal and a better chance of getting an attacking return.

In the 12 domestic matches played so far this season Okafor has scored 5 goals and created a further 3 assists, 8 goal contributions in 12 matches. Another 4 UCL matches played and another 2 goals , combined 16 matches played with 7 goals and 3 assists, 10 goal contributions in 16 games which is very good for that price.

At a fantastic enabling price, being out of position in a much further role on the pitch, playing for a team that scores goals against an inconsistent team makes Okafor a great option for UCL matchday 5.

Claudinho

Claudinho  ~ UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Team: Zenit

Cost: 6.4 million

Ownership: 0%

A new addition to my UCL fantasy articles and one that could pass many of the causal players by.

Zenit currently sit top of the pile in the Premier Liga (Russian Premier league). In their last 10 matches although they lost 4 their still good goal scorers. 24 goals scored in their last 10 matches in all competitions, a 2.4 goals scored per match average over that same period. An attractive attack in terms of wanting to buying into it.

The upcoming opponent for the Russian league leaders is Malmo. A team that have taken an absolute beating in nearly every match they’ve played so far in the UCL. 12 goals conceded in the 4 matches played so far for Malmo, averaging 3 goals conceded per match. In their last 10 matches 14 goals conceded with a 1.4 goals average in that same time.

In the reverse fixture the Russian club blew Malmo away after a huge 4-0 win and being 6 points behind 2nd place Chelsea they’ll see this as another huge opportunity to repeat this.

Claudinho, the 24 year old Brazilian was slowly progressing through the ranks in Brazilian football. In 2018 he started getting more integrated into the Brasileiro Serie B league with Red Bull Bragantino. 2019 was the year that we saw his real threat coming to the surface playing 34 matches he scored 10 goals and created 11 assists leading to 21 goal contributions in 34 matches.

In season 20-21 Claudinho was seemingly promoted with Red Bull Bragantino to Brasileiro Serie A where he played 35 matches , scored 18 goals and created 6 assists. 24 goal contributions in 35 matches which is very good.

Claudinho is a very versatile player and you can see that from the image below showing the positions he can play in:

Let’s see now take a look at his heat map for Zenit:

You’ll see Claudinho primarily plays on the left side although his play and positioning does drift central quite often. Lots of activity also outside and inside the box also highlights the potential Claudinho has for attacking returns.

9 matches played so far for Claudinho in the domestic league scoring 3 goals and creating 2 assists, 5 goal contributions in 9. Int he as UCL next up he plays against Malmo where in that first matchup he scored and kept a clean sheets coming away with 8 points.

Claudinho has a great price tag in a bracket that is very limited in options, playing against a woeful team defensively and in good form. For me another great option for UCL matchday 5.

Pedro Goncalves

Pedro Goncalves ~ UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Team: Sporting CP

Cost: 8 million

Ownership: 0%

Sporting are a top team and home to some great talent. Currently join top in the Primeira Liga or behind in 2nd on goal difference however you look at it, the fact remains they can score goals and win games.

In terms of recent form Sporting have one of the best in Europe’s top teams. 9 wins in 10 matches in all competitions with only 1 loss. Great form and that’s only backed up by the fact they’ve scored 20 goals in those same 10 matches with an average of 2 goals per match.

In the UCL although they lost to both Ajax and Dortmund in matchday 1 and 2 they bounced back with back to back wins of 4-0 and 4-1 against Besiktas. 9 goals scored in the 4 matches played showing close to their average mentioned earlier of 2 goals scored per match.

Targeting Dortmund doesn’t sound right but it’s something we need to realise could be a good idea. Dortmund are in an inconsistent run of form without their main man Haaland. 4 losses in their last 10 matches for Dortmund conceding 15 goals in that same period which is 1.5 goals conceded on average per match.

Pedro Goncalves comes at quite the expense at 8 million and with 0% ownership that could be a big reason why but don’t be fooled , he could be a fanastic option for UCL matchday 5.

Pedro Goncalves heatmap:

Pedro Goncalves heatmap

You’ll see Pedro predominantly plays the right hand side and drifts often towards the centre of the pitch to attack along with a good amount of movement in the opponents box.

In the season 20/21 domestically Goncalves played 32 matches as a 22 year old and managed a sensational 23 goals along with 3 assists. That’s a total of 26 goal contributions in 32 matches, again a fantastic feat for a player that young.

This season that good form continues. 7 matches domestically played with 4 goals. Combined with the 2 goals and 1 assist in his 2 UCL games played that’s 9 matches in all competitions with 7 goal contributions. A very good start to the season for Goncalves.

It’s also worth noting that Goncalves also takes the teams penalties and that was seen where he took one , scored it and took away a brace and the player of the match award taking an 18 point haul with him.

Pedro Goncalves has the form and fixture to have great potential in UCL matchday 5.

Mo Salah

Mo Salah ~ UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Team: Liverpool

Cost: 10.7 million

Ownership: 34%

Oddly only the 4th most owned player in the game but arguably the best player in the world currently.

In terms of form Liverpool are amongst the good of it. In their last 10 matches they’ve only lost one of those. Going further back only 2 losses in their last 20 matches, another showing of how good they are.

Liverpool continue to be one of the most prolific attack amongst the most elite in Europe. A massive 31 goals in their last 10 matches averaging 3.1 goals per match in that same period, once again reflecting one of the most in form attacks amongst Europes elite teams.

Upon further consideration to their goal scoring , Liverpool have actually scored 2 goals or more in their last 10 matches , and in 6 of those 3 or more goals scored. Showing that when they beat a team its usually well.

Porto up next for Liverpool in UCL matchday 5. A team Liverpool already dismantled 5-1 in the reverse fixture. 13 goals conceded in their last 10 matches, 1.3 on average conceded per match which is not that bad considering 5 of them were against Liverpool but knowing they were beaten 5-1 in the last fixtures is hard to ignore, especially with Liverpool playing at home this time.

Salah reigns as the highest scoring player currently in Fantasy Premier League with 117 points. In comparison second place only has 67 points , just over half of Salah’ current points tally.

Underlying stats show he dominates many, Salah is:

  • 1st in the league for the most penalty are touches in the opposition half
  • 1st in the league for goals scored with 10
  • 1st in the league for attempts on goal
  • 1st in the league for big chances total

I could go on. My point is Salah dominates many of the underlying stats, this really is a true reflection of his current form.

11 matches played in the Premier League for Salah this season, scoring a huge 10 goals already and creating 7 assists , totalling to a whopping 17 goal contributions in 11 games. In the UCL another 4 matches played and 5 goals scored , again out performing matches played to attacking returns. Combining both UCL and Premier league games that’s 15 matches played and an unbelievable 22 attacking returns. Something as UCL fantasy managers we simply can’t ignore.

Of course now Liverpool have won all 4 matches and are top of the group many would think Salah could be rotated but with the international break and only a premier league match after that I think Salah will play. Not only that Firmino recently suffered a serious hamstring injury which could boost Salah’ chances of playing even more.

Salah makes a perfect captaincy option , in amazing form and playing for one of the most statistically elite attacks in Europe. Salah as always makes the top picks article.

Christopher Nkunku

Christopher Nkunku ~ UCL matchday 5 Midfielders ~ Top Picks

Team: Leipzig

Cost: 8.1 million

Ownership: 12%

Nkunku continues to be overlooked in the game and even I am guilty of that but now with both form and fixture he 100% makes the top picks for UCL matchday 5.

The UCL group for Leipzig is a tough one , including English champions Man City , French Giants PSG and underdog club Brugge who have shown their not pushovers.

In terms of their own recent run of form Leipzig are on an ok one. In their last 10 matches Leipzig have won 5 matches , drawn 3 and only lost 2. Unbeaten in the last 6 Leipzig are putting together a very good run of matches.

Regards to goals Leipzig are scoring them. 19 goals scored in their last 10 matches , 1.9 goals scored per match on average showing good scoring form. In the UCL that remains the case. In the the 4 matches Leipzig have played in the UCL so far they have scored 8 goals , just a bit higher than their last 10 average which is even more impressive considering they’ve scored 3 goals past Man City and scored 2 past PSG twice. Another showing of how good Leipzig can be going forward.

Club Brugge are next up for Leipzig. Currently 3rd in the domestic league and fully capable of both winning and scoring, however conceding goals is something they do in plenty. 16 goals conceded in the last 10 matches in all competitions with a 1.6 goals conceded per match average in that same time. In the UCL after 4 matches they’ve conceded 11 goals , just under 3 goals conceded per match showing defensively their group is too much for them.

Take a look at how versatile Nkunku is in the image below showing all of the positions he can play:

You’ll see that he can play pretty much anywhere in attack which makes him an even better for Fantasy managers.

This is emphasised in his heatmap here:

Christopher Nkunku heatmap

Usually I can tell you where he plays positionally most of the time but from this heat map you’ll see he is absolutely everywhere in terms of the final third. This heat map is very important as it indicates that although Nkunku is classed as a midfielder he can play up front and the as the most advanced attacker on occasions. A huge benefit having an out of position player and giving more of a chance of attacking returns as most fantasy managers know.

Since Nkunku has joined Leipzig from PSG he’s been such a good watch from a personal point of view and that’s only been highlighted in his form.

In his first season with Leipzig he played 32 matches, scored 5 goals and created created 13 assists from predominantly the left wing. 18 goal contributions in 32 which isn’t bad. His second he played just 28 games , scoring 6 goals and creating 6 assists , 12 contributions in 28. Currently this season Nkunku has played 11 matches scored 5 goals and created 3 assists. A total of 8 goal contributions. Combined that with his UCL attacking returns where he managed an impressive 5 goals in 4 matches leading to a total of 15 matches played with 13 goal contributions which is fantastic.

Currently Nkunku sits as the 4th highest scoring player in UCL fantasy amongst all players, consisting of 5 goals and 2 player of the match awards with 43 points averaging over 10 points per match, incredible value.

With a great fixture to attack , in brilliant form in all competitions especially in the UCL Nkunku becomes a great asset for UCL matchday 5.

UCL matchday 5 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Robert Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski ~ UCL matchday 5 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Team: Bayern

Cost: 11.8 million

Ownership: 42%

The 3rd most owned player in the game and the 2nd highest points returner in the game so far behind team mate Sane needs no justification to bring into your team.

We’ve already discussed how good the Bayern attack is , just as a reminder in their last 10 matches they’ve managed a whopping 34 goals , leading to a 3.4 goals scored per match , fantastic.

In the UCL their form continues and after 4 matches they scored a total of 17 goals against the likes of a Benfica and Barcelona. That’s just over 4 goals per match in every game played so far in the champions league.

Bayern’ opponent Dynamo Kyiv who have lost 4 in their last 10 which isn’t necessarily bad however have conceded 13 goals in their last 10 matches with a 1.3 goals conceded per match average. It gets worse than that , in the 4 matches they’ve played in the UCL they’ve lost all 3 matches , drawn one and failed to score a single goal in any of them. In those 4 matches Dynamo conceded 7 goals with 5 of those 7 conceded in the reverse fixture against Bayern where they lost 5-0.

Lewandowski currently arguably the best player in Europe in terms of numbers. In his 20/21 season he managed to play 29 games , score 41 and create 7 assists, in total 48 goal contributions in just 29 matches played. Formidable form.

This season his amazing form continues. 11 matches played domestically for Lewandowski scoring 13 goals and creating one assist. Combined with the 4 matches played in the UCL so far scoring a further 8 goals and creating another assist. In total combining both the UCL and domestic matches playing 15 matches , scored 21 goals and created 2 assists accumulating to 23 goal contributions in 15 matches, truly amazing form.

Lewandowski plays on the Tuesday and also the early kick off so we can ensure he starts the match, not only this but this gives us a great captaincy option for day 1 of UCL matchday 5.

Not only is not owning Lewandowski a problem but not captaining could be foolish. His ownership and form combined make for a catastrophic drop in rank if he performs and you don’t own him. As always not just a great pick for UCL matchday 5 but an essential one on my opinion.

Duvan Zapata

Duvan Zapata ~ UCL matchday 5 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Cost: 9.7 million

Ownership: 1%

Atalanta currently in 4th position in Serie A. Although conceding plenty of goals their up there for a reason. Only 2 losses in their last 10 matches and unbeaten now for 5 matches ,Atalanta seem to be finally collecting a run of form.

In their last 10 matches the Italian club have managed to score 21 goals with an average in that same period of 2.1 goals scored per match, an average that UCL fantasy managers will be appealed by.

In the UCL Atalanta’ form has been ok, after 4 matches the Italians have managed 2 draws , a win and a loss , again not too bad. In that time they’ve still scored 7 goals, close to their last 10 match average of 2 goals and still scoring 2 goals in 3 out of 4 of those matches against Man United twice and Villarreal.

In UCL matchday 5 Atalanta come up against Young Boys who they beat 1-0 in matchday 2.

In terms of the opponents form , Young boys have been inconsistent at best, losing 5 matches , drawing 2 and winning 3. In that same period they conceded 17 goals , 1.7 per match on average conceded in that time. In the UCL 8 goals co conceded in 4 which averages 2 goals conceded per match setting up Atalanta’ close to 2 goals scored per match on average.

There was some rotation concerns with the Atalanta attack but recently his hot form seems to have strengthened his first team position over the last few matches after starting 5 matches in a row for Atalanta.

Zapata has kept an extremely high level of consistency for last few seasons for Atalanta , showing just how good he is.

Take a look below at his consistency:

  • Season 17/18 : Played 31 , scored 11 goals and created 4 assist
  • Season 18/19: Played 37 , scored 23 goals and created 7 assists
  • Season 19/20: Played 28 , scored 18 goals and created 6 assists
  • Season 20/21: Played 37 , scored 15 goals and creating 9 assists

This season the 31 year old continues that form and looks like he could do even better than all of those seasons. Already 10 matches played domestically , scoring 7 goals and creating 2 assists , combined with the 4 games played in the UCL scoring 1 goal and creating 3 assists it accumulates to 15 matches played with 13 attacking returns showing great form for the Colombian.

Fixture and form fully back Zapata for UCL matchday 5 , with a goal in his last 4 consecutive matches for Atalanta he’ll be ready to pounce and for that reason makes the top picks for this matchday.

Ajax Forwards

Similar to Bayern Ajax have won all 4 of their matches and so are basically through  to last 16 already. The problem being we could see rotation but unlike Bayern we can’t see the Ajax lineup because they play on the Wednesday so we have to gamble on them starting.

Like with Bayern I’ll rate them in order of the priority in which I would bring them into my own team.

Firstly it’s important we touch upon Ajax. Their a team in formidable both domestically and in the UCL and you can see that in their form. In their last 10 matches they’ve only lost once , in their last 20 matches only lost twice and you can extend that to additional 10 matches going further back to only 2 losses in their last 30 matches.

In terms of goals their amongst the best in Europe. 24 goals scored in the last 10 matches with an average of 2.4 goals scored per match reflecting a very good attack. The 10 matches before they scored 34 goals with a 3.4 goals scored per average. In the UCL that amazing scoring form continues , 14 goals scored in the 4 matches so far above 3 goals per match scored on average so getting into this Ajax attack feels vital this week especially when taking into account their opponents.

Besiktas up next for Ajax who are probably one of the most out of form teams in the UCL currently. 3 wins and a huge 7 losses for Besiktas in their last 10 matches. This is the same type of form their showing in the UCL but worse with 4 losses in 4 matches as it stands.

Besiktas are obviously off form and inconsistent but their defensive stats are worse. 23 goals conceded in their last 10 matches and a 2.3 goals conceded per match average in that same period, horrendous defensive form and a clear team to target moving forward. This is emphasised in their UCL form with another 12 goals conceded in the 4 matches played , 3 goals conceded in each on average.

It’s obvious Besiktas are awful and probably the biggest target in terms of fixtures for attacking players to play against. For me the double attack could even be on. Yes it’s a shame Ajax do not have any valid options in midfield because forward positions feel precious but again even the double forward attack feels like it could be a great move here.

Sebastien Haller

Sebastien Haller ~ UCL matchday 5 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Cost: 9.1 million

Ownership: 20%

Already you’ll see a chunk of managers own Haller and it’s not huge surprise.

Haller usually leads the attack up top ahead positionally of any other player and so most of the attacking play finishes with him. One of the reasons he ranks ahead of the other forwards.

In season 20-21 Haller moved Ajax half way through the season after a torrid time at West Ham in the Premier league and got off the mark really well. He played 12 matches , scored 7 and created 3 assists with 10 goal contributions in 12 matches.

So far Haller hasn’t missed a match this season in the UCL or the domestic league. A show that he’s very reliable in terms of minutes and feels like the most nailed of the 3 forwards.

This season Haller continues his great form with starting 16 matches in the UCL and Eredivisie scoring a huge 14 goals and creating 5 assists accumulating to 19 goal contributions in 16 matches, Simply amazing form considering half of those goals were scored in the 4 matches he played in the UCL.

Haller currently sits as the 3rd highest scoring player in the game and only 3 points behind the unbelievable Lewandowski showing just how good Haller’ current form is.

Haller has fantastic scoring form and tops that off with assists, with one of the best fixtures you can get in the UCL amongst an elite scoring team amongst Europes best, and for that reason ranks 1st for me in the Ajax attack.

Dusan Tadic

Dusan Tadic ~ UCL matchday 5 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Cost: 8.9 million

Ownership: 1%

Similar to Haller in that he’s not missed a match yet domestically or in the UCL , showing once again that Ajax have another forward they rely on in terms of minutes.

Tadic positionally usually plays on the left just behind Haller which means he will often turn supplier for Haller and you’ll see this.

Many will remember Tadic’ time at Southampton in his last season not hitting his potential. He really did however after moving back to Ajax years after his departure, take a look at somebody the incredible stats he hit since joining:

  • Season 18/19: Played 34 matches, scored 28 goals and created 13 assists.
  • Season 19/20: Played 25 matches, scored 11 goals and created 14 assists.
  • Season 20/21: Played 34 matches, scored 14 goals and creating 17 assist.

This shows not only is Tadic a very consistent player in terms of goal contributions but also Tadic offers an uncommon balance of both goals and assists which indicates a huge advantage as an owner in that he has 2 big ways to returning points form matches.

This season that form continues. 16 matches played in both the UCL and domestic league , 6 goals scored , creating 10 assists combining to 16 goal contributions in 16 matches which is amazing form.

Tadic also takes the Ajax penalties which gives him a third great route to potential points.

Cheaper than Haller and taking penalties there seems more routes to points for Tadic, his champions league form doesn’t match Haller’ but that could easily change. Either way a fantastic option for UCL matchday 5.

Antony

Antony  ~ UCL matchday 5 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Cost: 7.6 million

Ownership: 6%

Antony the 21 year old talented Brazilian is now well into his second season for Ajax. You’ll see that he’s more owned that Tadic but also cheaper than both Haller and Tadic. Potentially a great cheap way into the Ajax attack.

Starting only 7 compared to the other two starting 12 domestically could be seen as a concern however has still started every UCL Match this season. It could also be seen as Antony could avoid rotation if Ajax wanted to rotate Haller or Tadic.

Antony’s heat map below:

Antony’s heat map below

You’ll see that Antony primarily plays in the RW position, similar to Salah’ heat map in that he’s extremely advanced with darker red patches in the opponents box showing huge potential fur attacking returns. If only Antony was as fortunate as Salah and been classed as a midfielder in the game.

Last season Antony started 32 matches , scored 9 goals , created 8 assists, 15 goal contributions in 32 matches for then a 20 year old trying to impress.

This season Antony seems like he’s grown as a player. Starting 13 goals so far scoring 4 goals and creating 4 assists , 8 goal contributions in 13 games.

34 points for Antony so far in UCL fantasy averaging 8.4 points per match , make no mistake that this is a very impressive number for a 7.6 million forward.

There you have it , all 3 attacking picks ranked. All 3 are very good options and again the double up in the forward position could have lots of potential against a really off form Besiktas.

Diogo Jota

Diogo Jota ~ UCL matchday 5 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Team: Liverpool

Cost: 8 million

Ownership: 5%

A first time addition for the UCL top picks article and a very good time for his inclusion and we’ll see why.

Liverpool remain one of the most elite teams in Europe in attack and their form nearly matches that. Only 1 loss in their last 10 matches in all competitions for Liverpool showing great form. The great form doesn’t stop there, 2 losses in their last 20 matches in all competitions and even further back 2 losses in their last 30 matches , elite form.

In terms of goals they score a lot. A huge 31 goals scored in their last 10 matches and the 10 matches before that 25 goals , with the recent 10 matches having an average of 3.1 goals per match. A colossal average with one of the best in Europe and amongst top teams.

Their upcoming opponent Porto are in good form with only 2 losses in their last 10 and only conceding 13 goals. 5 of those 13 goals conceded  however were against Liverpool and this time Liverpool play at Anfield, a place they’ve famously been significantly better over the years.

Fantasy players usually have to worry about how reliable Jota’ minutes are and if he will start but worry no more. Due to a ‘serious’ hamstring injury as many sources are calling it Firmino could be out for weeks and even more worrying that it looks like a re occurring injury which could keep Firmino out for even longer than it normally would. This secures Jota’ minutes in the Liverpool first team.

Diogo Jota heatmap:

Diogo Jota heatmap

You’ll see Jota plays predominantly on the left side whilst spending a lot of his time in the opponents box. I feel the game probably could have classed Jota as a midfielder in the game similar to Mane and Salah but we didn’t get that lucky.

In the league so far Jota has played 10 matches , scored 4 goals and created 1 assist , 5 goal contributions in 10 and that’s whilst being in and out of the team. Now nailed to the first team without Firmino for we can really see him thrive.

For me Liverpool are good enough to own a double attack going into this UCL matchday 5. With a home game against a team they flattened in the reverse fixture 5-1 and nailed to one of this highest scoring attacks in the last 10 matches in Europe , Jota makes for a great pick for MD5.

Karim Benzema

Karim Benzema ~ UCL matchday 5 Forwards ~ Top Picks

Team: Real Madrid

Cost: 10.2 million

Ownership: 17%

The Frenchman continues to play at his peak even at 33 years old. Relentless and inevitable in many ways, so let’s see why he makes the top picks for his 3rd matchday in a row.

Although not exactly breezing past their opponents in the group stages excluding their big win in matchday 3 Real Madrid remain top of the pile , 1st position and continuing their domination in a competition that has seen them win it more than any other team in Europe.

In terms of their form Real Madrid seem to be slowly gaining some momentum. In their last 10 matches they’ve played they have only lost 2 games , 6 wins and 2 draws. Being unbeaten in 6 games now Real Madrid take that form into UCL matchday 5.

Real Madrid aren’t shy of goals either , in the last 10 they’ve played they’ve scored 21 goals , 2.1 goals scored on average per match in that time, impressive. 9 goals scored in the 4 UCL matches they’ve played with more than 2 goals per match.

In UCL matchday 5 Sheriff lies ahead. A team that have only lost 2 of their last 10 matches and even beat Real Madrid in a shock 2-1 in matchday 2. The Spanish giants will be looking for revenge and hoping Sheriff suffer a beating to the one they took against Inter.

Benzema has stayed at a top level for a long time in terms of form. Let’s take a a look at what he’s been doing season upon season for Real Madrid.

Take a look below:

  • 15/16 – Played 27 matches , scored 24 goals and created 7 assists. 31 goal contributions in 27.
  • 16-17- Played 29 matches , scored 11 goals and created 5 assists. 16 goal contributions in 29 matches.
  • 17-18- Played 32 matches, scored 5 goals and created 10 assists. 15 goal contributions in 32 matches.
  • 18-19- Played 36 matches, scored 21 goals and created 6 assists. 27 goal contributions in 36 matches.
  • 19-20- Played 37 matches , scored 21 goals and created 8 assists. 29 goal contributions in 37 matches.
  • 20-21- Played 34 matches , scored 23 goals and created 9 assists. 32 goal contributions in 34 matches.

You’ll notice that his form improves as he gets older which is significant because at 33 years old his current season looks set to be his best yet. So far he’s played 11 matches , scored 10 goals and created 7 assists, 17 goal contributions in 11 matches which is incredible form.

His UCL form is very good, after 4 matches Benzema has already racked up 4 goals and an assist, 5 goal contributions in 4 matches, again more goals contributions than matches played.

Not only does Benzema offer great value for money when more expensive premiums are doing less , he also offers to be a great captaincy option of Lewandowski doesn’t perform.

Against a team Real Madrid will be seeking out revenge against , in red hot form and offering a second day captaincy option Benzema makes the top pick article once again because he’s simply a fantastic pick for UCL matchday 5.

So guys that’s all of my top picks,  below let’s now take a look at my brand new features of building the readers a limitless team for those wanting to play that chip and also build a wildcard team for those also wanting to play the wildcard.

Firstly because I’m not actually submitting the team I won’t be able to arrange the bench in date of playing order. Remember to change the bench around if you use my examples and put the players that play later in the match day on the bench whilst also making sure all of your Tuesday players are in your first 11.

UCL Matchday 5 Wildcard team

Taking into account the wildcard team needs more of a long term plan and has to take into account matchday 6 also , this would be my wildcard team:

UCL Matchday 5 Wildcard team

Now in terms of my own plan this is my team going into UCL matchday 5 after having used all of my chips to great success:

No changes yet but like most players I will be navigated by the Bayern lineup, if both Sane and Lewandowski both start then I can use my transfers for luxury moves. Those moves could be with the Ajax team as they have the best fixture to target in terms of both attack and defence.

There you have it , thank you for returning to read my matchday 5 article , until next time.
