The Christmas period is about to begin with so many deadlines coming, in a short span of time. Getting these fifty-fifty decisions right, between two players is going to be crucial, as the heavy schedule can bring a lot of unwanted/unplanned transfers. In this player comparisons blog ahead of FPL GW13, I will compare some of the popular dilemmas, that will help FPL managers choose the better pick according to their team.
Before going further, Do vote in this week’s FPL GW13 allaboutfpl captaincy poll. The same will be available in the captaincy analysis and metrics blog written by@AK_FPL1. FPL GW 13 Player Comparisons
Jota (7.5m) Vs Foden (8.3m) Vs Bernardo (7.2m)
In this bracket, Jota, on paper, seems to be the stand-out option depending upon the extent of Firmino’s injury. So for the short period, Jota should be less of a rotation risk as compared to the other two. However, Manchester City’s attack cannot be ignored. Bernardo Silva appears to be safe from the Pep Roulette, he has played 90 minutes every week since GW6.
Jota Vs Foden Vs Bernardo: The Stats
Minutes: 759 vs 613 vs 939

Jota tops in 5 of the 9 parameters in this table. So far, he has scored 5 goals out of 759 minutes. He is an incredible player, and has the potential to come good whenever he gets minutes. Therefore, getting the timing right with him is key. Foden is one of the most important players in that City team and he always looks good when he plays. This season he has an npxG/90 of 0.37, while his teammate, Bernardo Silva is at 0.23.

According to the underlying stats, Liverpool have been performing better than Manchester City going forward. However, Liverpool have been slightly overperforming, attacking-wise.
Man City and Liverpool are the two best attacking teams in the league, with both of them having the ability to score a lot of goals in any given week.

Both, Liverpool and City have decent fixtures coming up, and they are somewhat fixture proof, as Liverpool scored four past Arsenal last week. Solely on the basis of fixtures, Man City’s look slightly better.
Jota Vs Foden Vs Bernardo: The Verdict
After seeing all the aspects, Jota comes out on top, however, his minutes are dependant on Firmino’s availability. Firmino might be back by mid – December, making Jota a rotation risk. On the other hand, Pep has not been rotating that much this season, with Bernardo starting almost all the games and Foden missing out only first few weeks of the season.
Between Foden and Bernardo, Bernardo seems to be the more nailed on one, making him the safer pick. Foden is the more explosive asset, making him a high-risk, high reward asset. Predicting Pep is near to impossible, therefore, a having a playing bench is almost necessary with City players.
Going for two of these is also a valid strategy, as currently there are no forwards who have been performing exceptionally. Therefore, having Jota and one of Foden or Bernardo could come good.

Son (10.4m) Vs Kane (12.2m)
Spurs appointment of Conte and their good fixture run, coincided for this period, and one of the most popular dilemmas, managers are facing is whether to go for Son or Kane. With a 2m price difference and of course one being a midfielder and one being a forward, let’s see which one is the better option to go for.
Son Vs Kane: The Stats
Minutes: 965 vs 918
Son | Kane | |
Goals | 4 | 1 |
Fantasy Assists / Assists | 2 / 2 | 1 / 1 |
npxG per 90 | 0.34 | 0.35 |
xA per 90 | 0.13 | 0.22 |
npxG + xA per 90 | 0.47 | 0.67 |

% FPL Goal Involvement |
Spurs’ performance this season has been underwhelming this season. However, after sacking Nuno, and appointing Conte, they are expected to turn things around. So far, Son has scored 4 goals, while Kane has just scored the one. Son at a price tag of 10.4m is too attractive to ignore in this fixture run. His Goal Involvement this season is at 55%. Kane has a hefty price tag attached with him, but if he is able to hit the grounds running, he will help climb ranks at just 10.9% ownership.

It is evident that Spurs has not scored a lot of goals this season, in fact they are 3rd from the bottom for Goals scored just above Norwich and at par with Southampton. Son is the most important player for them, as he has been the creative force so far. With change in system, the full backs are ones to watch, along with the clean sheets, they might have increased role in the attacking output of the team.

This fixture run is the ideal fixture run a team could have. They face Burnley, Brentford, Norwich, and Brighton. Norwich and Burnley are ranked 20th and 18th in terms of expected Goals Conceded and are the worst defences in the league this season. Looking at these fixtures, I would say, it’s worth going for at least one of Son or Kane over this period, and then switching to other options like Ronaldo when their fixtures take a turn for the good.
Son Vs Kane: The Verdict
The Son Vs Kane, ultimately depends upon your team structure. If you can upgrade someone like Vardy to Kane, then it is worth going for Kane, as it would make it easy for you to switch him to Ronaldo, when his good fixtures come. Going for Kane also allows having 2 or 3 mid-priced midfielders like both Foden and Jota, as discussed previously.
Going for Son has its own benefits. He has an attractive price, and it is easier to downgrade him to any of the midfielders to fund any other transfer in your team. Also, he is a midfielder, so he gets one extra point for a goal scored and a clean sheet point as well.

Benteke (6.4m) Vs Pukki (5.8m) Vs King (5.6m)
The Budget forward position is one of the most crucial positions, as it helps the squad depth for the bench and also playing them in their easy fixtures. With lack of good striker options in the game right now, let’s see, who takes the lead in this bracket.
Benteke Vs Pukki Vs King: The Stats
Minutes: 769 vs 1014 vs 728
Benteke | Pukki | King | |
Goals | 4 | 4 | 4 |
Fantasy Assists / Assists | 1 / 1 | 0 / 0 | 3 / 3 |
npxG per 90 | 0.45 | 0.21 | 0.50 |
xA per 90 | 0.20 | 0.11 | 0.35 |
npxG + xA per 90 | 0.65 | 0.32 | 0.85 |
Shots / Shots on Target | 26 / 8 | 19 / 7 | 22 / 8 |
Key Passes (per 90) | 10 (1.17) | 5 (0.44) | 16 (1.98) |
% Goal Involvement | 28 | 57 | 54 |
% FPL Goal Involvement |
They all have scored 4 goals this season so far. Pukki has a high Goal Involvement % (57), as he is the main man in that Norwich team, and they don’t score a lot of goals. King, clearly is the stand-out option to own at 5.6m. He has npxG + xA/90 of 0.85, which at this price is incredible.
Benteke’s Heat Maps:

Palace Vs Norwich Vs Watford at a Glance:

Goal Attempts | 140 | 120 | 133 |

Norwich do not have great underlying stats clearly, whereas Palace and Watford have decent enough numbers to justify buying their players. King is also the best option to own from the Watford team. Whereas, Crystal Palace has many attackers, and things could change any week, or a better option could emerge, with Eze returning from injury.

Norwich have difficult fixtures coming up, however, Crystal Palace have a decent run of fixtures. Moreover, these players can easily be benched for their difficult fixtures. Rotating them with the other players’ could help maximize points. Palace face villa, Leeds, eve and sou in their next five, and Norwich and Watford after that.
Benteke Vs Pukki Vs King: The Verdict
Out of the three, the best option to own, in my opinion, is Joshua King. Benteke is a close second because of his fixture run and Palace posting better stats. However, most of the times, you would only play them for their good fixtures or when your player is injured.
Watford face Brentford, Burnley, Crystal Palace, and Wolves after GW15, in which he has high potential to deliver points. Also, Benteke has some great fixtures in his run against, Leeds, Everton, Southampton, Watford, and Norwich in the next eight.
