FPL GW10 Watchlist – Stand Out Players Who Impressed In GW9

What a Premier League weekend it was in GW9! It felt like it was GW38 & the season was coming to an end, which is when we normally witness so many goals in a gameweek. 40 goals were scored from 10 matches. Thanks mainly to Chelsea’s demolition of Norwich, Liverpool’s Messiah (Salah) running riot over the Red Devils & Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City teaching his apparent heir (Graham Potter) a counter-attacking masterclass. In our fantasy world as well, there were some huge scores all across the board. Salah, Mount & Josh King scored hat-tricks & led the way in terms of points. Foden, Maxwel Cornet, Chilwell & Reece James joined the party (ya Partey also scored!).

An average of 64 points with 8.5 million players implies how high scoring this GW was. Like always has been this season, the GW was defined by whether you captained the Egyptian king or not. But don’t be too disheartened if you missed out on that haul by going for an alternate captain & didn’t do quite well. It’s only GW9 & 29 more GWs remain. Irrespective of whether you had a bumper GW or not, remember that it’s only a game & don’t let it affect your mood & behavior towards others! Now let’s dive into some players that impressed this GW & look at them for FPL GW10.

Before going further, Do vote in this week’s FPL GW10 allaboutfpl captaincy poll. The same will be available in the captaincy analysis and metrics blog written by@AK_FPL1. The metrics has an 8/9 record this year. Last week the metric predicted Salah as the best captaincy candidate and he returned once again in GW9 with a double-digit haul. Stay tuned for the GW10 Captaincy metric to see who tops it. Link to all our FPL Gameweek 10 blogs.

The results and the captaincy metric blog will be published soon based on the votes.

FPL GW10 Player Watchlist based on their GW9 Performance:

Phil Foden – 8.1m mid, 9.2% owned

GW9 performance: 18 points (2 goals, 1 assist)

Foden was unfortunate to miss the start of the season due to injury. But since his return back into the team, Man. City have gone up a notch & he looks like their most influential player alongside Bernardo Silva. Foden is still only owned by around 10% of managers & many were hesitant to get him in fearing Pep’s rotation. This is justifiable based on how he was used mostly as an impact sub last season. But this year he looks to be one of Pep’s most trusted players & has started the last 4 PL games, contributing 3 goals & 2 assists. Playing as a false 9 he is the most exciting OOP (out-of-position) + explosive player in FPL.

  • Goal attempts – 8 (1st)
  • Shots inside box – 8 (1st)
  • Shots on target – 4 (1st)
  • Penalty area touches – 11 (1st)
  • Chances created – 2
  • Big chances created – 1
  • xG – 1.25

Next fixture: CRY (H)

With City having scored 4 goals against one of the best defensive teams (Brighton), City will go all in against Palace at home. Palace have conceded at least 2 goals in all away games this season & City have scored a minimum of 2 goals at home in all games, except against Southampton.

Mason Mount – 7.5m mid, 13.5% owned

GW9 performance: 24 points (3 goals, 1 assist)

Mount started the season well with 2 assists in 3 games. But was then sidelined with injury. Tuchel by then had decided to change formation & drifted to a 352 with Lukaku & Werner as the 2 strikers. Mount was then eased into team with substitute appearances & finally Tuchel was forced to start him due to the injuries to his star forwards. Pre-GW9 deadline when most people were focused on Havertz playing OOP as the forward, it was actually Mount who grabbed the opportunity to shine against Norwich. He was also the most advanced Chelsea player with Havertz playing as the false 9 to link up play. Mount & Hudson Odoi were tasked with running into the spaces between the Norwich CBs. From now on, Mount should start consistently as well like last season.

  • Goal attempts – 5
  • Shots inside box – 3
  • Shots on target – 4
  • Penalty area touches – 4
  • Chances created – 3
  • Big chances created – 1
  • xG – 1.40

Next fixture: NEW (A)

I don’t expect Newcastle to self-destruct like Norwich & Mount to score another hattie, but being the talisman in the absence of Lukaku, Mount should get plenty of chances to score & assist. Him being on most set pieces & playing as part of the front 3 until the injured strikers return is a huge positive for a midfielder who plays for Chelsea at 7.5m.

Tino Livramento – 4.4m def, 17.8% owned

GW9 performance: 9 points (1 goal)

Livramento brings back memories of Sir John Lundstram who is still revered by FPL managers for being one of the best 4m defenders ever in FPL folklore. While Lundstram’s heroics were due to him being played as an OOP midfielder in that Sheffield United side of 2019-20, Livramento remains true to his position as a right back & still has been influential in the final third. Just 18, he was first introduced into the Southampton side due to Kyle Walker-Peter’s injury. But since then, he has shown the grit & performed well to retain that position. He has easily adapted into the high pressing style of Hasenhuttl & has the license to bomb forward. Against Burnley, he was unlucky not to score & assist more. He has gradually elevated himself into a 4th playable defender rather than a cheap 5th bench fodder defender. He is essentially turning into a must have 4.5m TAA.

GW9 stats compared to other defenders –

  • Goal attempts – 3 (2nd)
  • Shots inside box – 3 (1st)
  • Shots on target – 1 (2nd)
  • Penalty area touches – 3
  • Chances created – 3 (1st)
  • xGI – 0.41 (3rd behind TAA & Digne)

If the above heatmap does not convince you to buy him, I do not know how much more I can advocate this Chelsea academy product.

Next fixture: WAT (A)

Watford recorded an impressive 5-2 comeback win against Everton. They still conceded twice against an Everton side that looked blunt in attack. Watford scored 5 mainly due to the horrific display of Everton’s CBs (Keane in particular). Ranieri could still need time to incorporate his ideas into the team. They rank 4th worst for chances conceded from their left side since Ranieri became manager, which is where Tino operates. Southampton would look to extend their impressive recent run.

Ben Chilwell – 5.8m def, 12.1% owned

GW9 performance: 12 points (1 goal)

Having a Chelsea wingback in your FPL team is easily one of the most desirable & explosive options to have if you are playing FPL seriously. But whom do we consider amongst the 4/5 options that we have – Chilwell, Alonso, James, Azpilicueta & Hudson Odoi (CHO). James is a brilliant asset to own & easily passes the eye test whenever he plays. But unfortunately, the right back position could be the most rotation prone due to Azpi & CHO available to deputize.

🌟 Why Chelsea LB > RB

  • 2 players for 1 spot – Alonso is the only competition for Chilwell
  • Less chance of substitute appearance, usually plays 90 mins enabling auto sub to get in the FPL team
  • Is usually the one who takes more shots on goal & makes more runs into the box, whereas the RB holds the width on the other side.
  • Rudiger at LCB, who is one of the fastest & best among all CBs at Chelsea, gives LB the license to join the attack with lesser defensive duty.

Chilwell is on a goal scoring spree having netted 3 goals in his last 3 PL starts this season. He is also better than Alonso in terms of defensive capability & recovery speed. Albeit the difference in height, he has easily reproduced the attacking threat that Alonso offered in terms of shot volume & positioning. Along with Mount, he is on set pieces as well. Therefore, it looks like it is indeed Chilwell’s place to lose in the first XI. The ideal Chelsea defensive combo would be Rudiger & Chilwell.

  • Goal attempts – 2
  • Shots inside box – 1
  • Shots on target – 1
  • Penalty area touches – 2
  • Chances created – 1
  • xGI – 0.12

Newcastle - Goal attempts conceded heatmap

Next fixture: NEW (A)

Chilwell could very well get on the scoresheet again as evident from Newcastle’s goals attempts conceded heatmap (above right). They have conceded more chances from their right & centre which bodes well for Chilwell & Havertz/Mount who could occupy the left & centre positions respectively.

Remember that there are League Cup fixtures this midweek, so if you are planning to transfer in players from teams that are still involved, I’d advise you to remain patient to insure against possible injuries. Hope this article helps you with your decisions & may your arrows be green this GW!
