Alright folks it’s almost showtime. After a long wait, the international break is finally over and the excitement towards FPL GW4 is building. The Cristiano Ronaldo Effect I would say, has lead to managers using their wildcard or taking multiple hits to bring in one of the best footballers who is back home at Manchester United after 12 years. In this captain picks blog, we look at the key metrics of our top captaincy candidates which include a certain Cristiano Ronaldo, and reveal our top captaincy candidate for FPL Gameweek 4.
Last week Antonio topped our metric and hauled big which marked 3/3 returns for our captaincy metric. Let’s go down below to see who tops this one.

FPL GW4 Captaincy poll ~ Wisdom Of the Crowd

Underlying Numbers of the Captaincy Candidates
The attack stats pretty much tells the story from the first three GW’s. Michail Antonio and Hammers have enjoyed great attacking from over the opening three weeks with Antonio registering an xG of 2.91 with six big chances. Salah is the highest for chances created over the opening three weeks.
Lukaku is fourth in the list for combined attack ranking but it is to be noted the data is from GW1 to GW3 and Lukaku only made his debut in GW2. Similarly, we have decided to rank Ronaldo 5th as we don’t have any data, and adding any of his past season data will skew the metric. So Ronaldo do not hate us for ranking him fifth, I can assure you that the final captaincy metric wouldn’t have him last😉

Underlying Numbers of the Candidates Teams
Now moving on to the attacking numbers of the captaincy candidates it is without any surprise Liverpool top the numbers by some margin. Liverpool have had 51 shots inside the box which is 13 more than Westham who are second. However, the big chances are topped by both Liverpool and Westham with 11 big chances each. Manchester United are fourth in the list which is quite self-explanatory after having to work their way to a 1-0 victory against Wolves with Wolves allowing little space for the Manchester United attack to exploit.

Fixture Difficulty of the candidate team in FPL GW4
In the Third Phase of the Article, we look at the Fixture Difficulty of our 5 Candidates. We have used Drafthound’s Clean Sheet odds and the Odds of Conceding more than 2.5 goals. You can check out the same as well for free on Drafthound along with fixture analysis, predicted analysis, and more.
The fixture difficulty section sees Manchester United top the numbers. This is from the fact that they’re up against Newcastle United the weakest of all oppositions in our captaincy list. Newcastle have just 8% chance of keeping a CS and a whopping 42% chance of conceding more than 2.5 goals.
Projections Rank of our FPL Gameweek 4 Captain Picks
In the Fourth Phase of the article, We have used the Anytime Returns and Projected Points Tools available at Fantasy Football Hub. With the help of the Anytime Returns Tool, I have derived the Safety Rank, which helps in determining the Safest Captaincy Option of the week, while I have used the Projected Points Tool to determine the Explosion Rank, which helps in determining the Most Explosive Option of the week.
Cristiano Ronaldo dominates the projection raking with 78% anytime returns and a projected points of 8.1 against Newcastle United. This puts him in first place for projection ranks. Fellow teammate Bruno Fernandes is second in the projection rank with a points projection of 6.1. It is to be noted that Antonio is last in the points projection but this is partly due to the big names he’s up against for being the best captaincy candidate in GW4.

Conclusion – Final Rank from our FPL Gameweek 4 Captaincy metric analysis
In the fifth and final phase of the article, I have aggregated the Ranks derived above to pull out the Cumulative Rank Factor (CRF). The Candidate having the lowest Cumulative Rank Factor is the most ideal Captaincy Option according to this metric.
Salah has the lowest CRF and is our top captaincy choice in gameweek 4 according to our metric. Cristiano Ronaldo ranks third in the final list in spite of being ranked last in the player stats which shows he’s still a good captaincy choice. With doubts about whether he’ll start or not, it is better to go with Salah captain and have Ronaldo in your team.
