Welcome to FPL GW5 Transfer Trends! This is a weekly series where we take a bit of time to analyze some of the major transfer trends on FPL prior to the deadline.
There were plenty of double-digit hauls from players from various teams in GW4, so there’s no surprise that a couple of those players are hot on the market at the moment.
This week, we can see the transfer trends show people buying players from Manchester United, Chelsea, Everton, and Crystal Palace. The top 5 transfers OUT come from West Ham United, Man United, Spurs, Everton, and Aston Villa. Link to all our FPL Gameweek 5 blogs.
FPL Transfers Gameweek 5 Deadline – Friday 17th September 2021 at 17:30 BST
We will take a look at the players that managers are rushing to get in their teams, as well as the players managers are booting out. Then, we will dive into three main transfer combinations that could be decent moves to make ahead of the upcoming gameweek.
RECAP GW4 TRANSFER TRENDS
Ings (2 points) to Ronaldo (13 points) ✅
Barnes (2 points) to Torres (3 points) 😕
Tsimikas (0 points) to Duffy (5 points) ✅
Ronaldo and Duffy did well, apart from the Torres pick…
Top Transfers In and Out Ahead of FPL GW5
Antonio’s red card against Southampton sees him lead the top transfers out prior to the deadline, with over 950k managers shipping him out. Fernandes makes a return to the top transfers out list at 2nd place, with 324k managers looking to free up funds to bring in premium forwards.
Injuries to Son and Calvert-Lewin see them on top transfers out, with 310k and 254k transfers out respectively. Finally, Ings makes a return again after a blank against Chelsea, with 250k managers giving him the boot.
On the flip side, Ronaldo (829k) and Lukaku’s (427k) mighty 13 point hauls in GW4 sees them topping the transfers in list. Pogba’s two assists against Newcastle sees him return once again at 3rd place, with 251k managers bringing him in.
Two budget midfielders fill the remainder of the transfers in list, with Everton’s Demarai Gray (237k) and Crystal Palace’s Conor Gallagher (232k) coming in 4th and 5th respectively. Both returned in GW4, so it’s no surprise managers are eager to get these cheap midfielders into their squads.
The 3 transfer combinations we will be focusing on are: DCL to Bamford, Son to Gallagher, and Kane to Ronaldo.
Top Three FPL GW5 Transfer Trends Combinations
FPL GW5 Transfer Combination 1: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2) to Patrick Bamford (£7.9)
There was a lot of anticipation waiting to see if DCL was fit after his toe injury doubt. And, while there was speculation he could start, he ended up not even making the squad selection to face Burnley, upsetting the many managers banking on him to deliver points.
50.9% of managers have already replaced DCL for Bamford after his expected absence until October 2nd. Bamford has remained relatively under the radar of most FPL managers despite the value he presented last season as a budget forward.
Bamford’s price drop to £7.9, penalty duty, as well as Leeds United’s favorable fixture run boost Bamford’s appeal as a straight swap from DCL.
Statistically, Bamford averages 6.22 touches in the box per 90 mins (4th among mid-priced forwards). Since GW1, he has taken 11 shots, 10 of which were in the box. He has an xG of 1.38 and has a 50% goal involvement for Leeds. And, with the better fixtures, we can expect those numbers to improve.
Who do Leeds United face in GW5?
Leeds play Newcastle away in GW5. Newcastle are currently one of the worst defences, with an xGC of 10.5. They’ve also conceded 16 big chances, the most for any team.
Arguably one of the weaker defences in the league, having conceded the most goals of all teams with 12 goals conceded. Should fare well for Bamford.

FPL GW5 Transfer Combination 2: Heung-Min Son (£10.0) to Conor Gallagher (£5.6)
Son‘s injury during international duty for South Korea has resulted in 14.4% of managers making the downgrade to Conor Gallagher, a surprising name to see among assets to consider.
An asset from Crystal Palace may not be the most eye-catching pick at the moment; however, at £5.6, he could be a great budget enabler for upgrades elsewhere in your squads.
His 2 goals and 2 assists in the last two games have rewarded the 4.1% of managers who own him so far, a huge differential pick! Additionally, among midfielders below £6.0, he is top for big chances per appearance (1.67) and total shots taken per appearance (3.33). He averages 1.67 big chances per appearance, the most for all sub-£6.0 midfielders, and currently has an 80% goal involvement for Crystal Palace.
His set-piece duty definitely boosts his favour too.
It also seems to be the case that there is a much debate over Gallagher vs Demarai Gray of Everton, who, too, has been showing glimpses of form and potential at a budget price.
Despite scoring 3 goals in the last 3 games, if you dig through the stats a little bit closer, we are presented with the following information:
Conor Gallagher vs Demarai Gray
It’s plain to see: Gallagher is outperforming Gray in almost all areas statistically. Gray is not a bad pick either, at £5.7. The fixtures also work in favor of Gray, and, with DCL’s absence, we have yet to see the effects on Gray’s positioning. However, if we back the statistics, Gallagher takes the cake on this one.
Who do Crystal Palace face in GW5?
Palace play Liverpool away in GW5. Definitely not the most appealing of fixtures.
However, it is worth pointing out that Gallagher’s 2 goals (15 point haul) was against West Ham away, who are 2nd best for non-penalty xGC (1.1).
The reasoning behind a Gallagher pick in your squads would be primarily a budget midfielder enabler who can free up cash for upgrades elsewhere. Palace seem to be facing growing pains as they work to solidify their style of play under new management. We could possibly see Palace improve in the long term.

FPL GW5 Transfer Combination 3: Harry Kane (£12.2) to Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5)
Cristiano Ronaldo returns on this edition of Transfer Trends yet again, after emphatically rewarding the roughly 27% of managers who owned him last GW with 2 goals and a gorgeous 13 point haul!
12.4% of managers are already making the move of Kane to Ronaldo prior to the deadline. Kane’s performance since GW1 has been lackluster, with a mere 3 points accumulated across 4 gameweeks. He has yet to register a single return in FPL this season.
From the Newcastle game alone, Ronaldo took 6 shots in total, 5 of which were in the box. He registered 2 big chances and had 6 touches in the box. Ronaldo critics will say that his first goal was merely a tap in, but it takes a good deal of awareness and positioning to get on the end of goalkeeper spills. And, if you’re still skeptical, his second goal should take care of that counterargument.
We will want to hold onto him for the West Ham, Villa, Everton, and Leiceister games, as he’s bound to return within that stretch of fixtures.
Who do Man United face in GW5?
Manchester United face West Ham away in GW5. This will be Ronaldo’s first game away, so it will be interested to see how he fares. I expect West Ham to be better defensively than Newcastle; however, West Ham have conceded 10 headed attempts. I’d back Ronaldo’s aerial threat to aid him in threatening the West Ham penalty area.
Additionally, with Antonio suspended, the attacking prowess of West Ham may be slightly hindered.
If that doesn’t convince you, getting Ronaldo in now sets you up nicely for the home game against Villa in GW6.
That has been 3 potential transfer combinations that FPL managers could consider prior to the Gameweek 5 deadline. Hope this blog provided a bit of insight on viable FPL moves you could take!
