With a lot of managers having used their Wildcard in the Gameweek 4, now have to strategize till the next Wildcard, as they do not have a ‘Get Out of the Jail Card’ for now. With Early Wildcard, comes more difficulties and it becomes necessary to have a rough plan for the season ahead. They would have to cope with the future Wildcard squads and few players who will be missing the next couple of weeks. Therefore, having a plan and trying to stay one step ahead, could really help you gain ranks. In this FPL GW5 Post wildcard strategy blog, I will discuss, how to deal with sudden injuries in your team, switching between premiums, how to cope with the future wildcarders, and when to bank a transfer, without a Wildcard in hand.
Before going further, do vote in this week’s FPL GW5 allaboutfpl captaincy poll. The same will be available in the captaincy analysis and metrics blog written by @AK_FPL1. The metrics has been delivering consistently with a 100% record this year. Last week the metric predicted Salah as the best captaincy candidate and he returned once again in GW4. Stay tuned for the GW5 Captaincy metric to see who tops it. Link to all our FPL Gameweek 5 blogs.

FPL GW5 Post Wildcard Strategy
How to deal with Injuries?
The most common forward line on this Wildcard was Ronaldo – Dominic Calvert Lewin – Antonio. Although Ronaldo did wonders, Antonio was suspended for the next game against MUN, and Dominic suffered an injury, due to which he would miss the next two-three weeks, maybe more. Therefore, removing Dominic would be on the top of the chopping block for many, as Antonio will be only missing one game (that too against MUN). Luckily, there are a lot of forward options in the game, to swap DCL/Antonio with. The best options are Bamford (7.9m) and Jimenez (7.4m). The other option can be going for Romelu Lukaku (11.6m).
Raúl Jiménez(7.4m) vs Patrick Bamford(7.9m):
With both of them having great fixtures, they seem like the perfect replacement. Bamford faces NEW, WHU and WAT in the next three. While, Jimenez has BRE, SOU, NEW in the same period. Jimenez is far ahead of Bamford in Chances created, and just ahead in shots and SiB. Jimenez has an xA of 1.15, while the Leeds Number 9 has 0.90. Bamford is ahead in xG with a total of 1.38 this season. The major difference between the two is that Jimenez has not found his magic touch yet, whereas, Bamford has already scored two and assisted one.
Choosing between the two is ultimately dependant on your squad. If you have some Wolves cover already (Traore/Trincao), then. it could be wise to go for Bamford, to spread your risk. Similarly, if you have Raphinha in midfield, then going for Jimenez could prove to be fruitful.

Romelu Lukaku (11.6m)
One of the obvious choices is to go for another premium – Lukaku. With better fixtures for Chelsea coming up from Gameweek 7 onwards, he is going to be best captain option in some of the weeks. Although, it might be a better idea to tap other players with better fixtures, but Lukaku has the ability to score against Spurs and Man City, and getting him a bit early, can help put you ahead of other teams.
Since his return to the Premier League, Lukaku has already scored 3 goals! He has accumulated an xG of 1.89, and had 17 touches inside the box. He is an amazing finisher, and does not need many chances to covert one. Therefore he is a great option to own. The best time to get him would be from GW7, when Chelsea’s fixtures turn for the good.

Other Future Injuries ahead of FPL GW5:
Similar to this week’s carnage, so many players missing out can happen in any given week. Therefore, to deal with this, post wildcard, taking a safer option, rather than an aggressive one, should be preferred. As, taking too many hits, without the Wildcard in the back pocket, can be too risky.
Switching Between Premiums:
There are innumerable premiums in the game, and owning a mere three of them, can jeopardize the rest of the team. Therefore, one of the best strategies, in the early part of the season, is to get the premium who is the best captain option over a period of five fixtures. For example – One of the common strategies right now, is to ship Ronaldo out for Lukaku after Gameweek 7, in order to captain Lukaku, for his good fixtures. Whereas, to premiums, fixtures rarely matter but, so as to maximize our points, we have to take certain calculated risks, which could reward the owners massively.
The most important premium to own is Tent Alexander Arnold. Paying 7.5m on a defender has been normalized by the output Trent delivers. Till now, he has given 6,12,4 and 12 points in these four fixtures. Liverpool also have a decent run of fixtures, in which they have the potential to keep clean sheets, coupled with attacking returns from Trent, which makes him one of the best players to own.

How to cope with Future Wildcard Squads:
Playing a wildcard provides us with an immense advantage for the short run, and the ability to set up a good team for the long run. However, whenever there is a fixture swing or many injuries amongst the common players, a wildcard becomes the best option to reset the team for fixtures ahead. For instance – due to so many injuries amongst the common players this week (Antonio being suspended, DCL out for 2-3 weeks), a Gameweek 5 Wildcard is on the cards. Also, with many teams facing a fixture swing from Gameweek 7 onwards and players leaving for International duties, for many it would be the perfect time to Wildcard. Of course, a delayed Wildcard would have better decision-making as more sample would be available, and some stability might be established. Therefore, without a Wildcard, teams tend to fall behind the trend due to missing out on some players.
In order to not fall too behind these teams, saving transfers for a week when the wildcard will be common can be a good tactic. For instance, saving two transfers for Gameweek 7 would help you to at least make the essential transfer or getting the best Wildcard pick from that point forward. Planning for those weeks will help you put at par with those wildcarders and have a fresh squad. 2 transfers with a minus 4 is basically a mini-wildcard, which helps to fix the problems/tap a player early. Therefore, saving a transfer, whenever possible, can be said to be the best strategy, in simple words.

When to bank a Transfer:
The basic advice that is usually given to managers is – Don’t fix it, if it ain’t broken! Understanding when to take hits, and when to bank a transfer is the ultimate aim. By saving a Free Transfer, the next week you can make 3 transfers by just a -4 hit, that too with better and more reliable information. On the contrary, sometimes, it is necessary to make transfers or even take hits, to fix certain problems.
With the current schedule, I think the best option would be: making one transfer this week (to remove DCL/Antonio, or get better playing XI), or benching Antonio, if your squad allows to do so – saving 1 FT in Gameweek 6 (if possible) – And finally having 2 FTs for Gameweek 7. Planning like this gives your team a foundation and a basis to make transfer. This also helps avoid wasteful transfers, and only focusing on things at the top of the priority list.

Conclusion:
After using a wildcard, you do not have to fret much really, as your team would be set for the upcoming weeks, pretty well. The only thing to keep in mind is – trying to avoid rash or impulsive decisions, which would hamper your pre-planned squad. The other thing is not being stubborn – removing a player if he is not performing or better options are available out there. Therefore, even without the Wildcard in hand, you can gain huge ranks, by just strategising what’s best for your team. Best of Luck for the season ahead!
